The 2012 NIT Season Tip Off  bracket was formally announced this afternoon by the NCAA, finalizing Michigan’s 2012-13 schedule. Michigan, the No. 1 seed, will headline the tournament along with Pittsburgh, Kansas State and Virginia.

Michigan will open the tournament against IUPUI in a game at Crisler Arena on November 12 at 9 p.m which will be broadcast on ESPNU. Should Michigan knock off IUPUI, the Wolverines will face the winner of Cleveland State and Bowling Green (who will open play on Monday at 6 p.m.) on Tuesday evening at 8 p.m.. That game will also be played in Ann Arbor and televised on ESPN2.

The final rounds of the event will be played Thanksgiving week at Madison Square Garden with the semifinals on November 21st and the finals on November 23rd. Michigan is in line to face Pittsburgh in semifinal action, assuming both teams advance through the opening rounds.

The NIT Season Tip Off is unique because it’s one of the few remaining preseason tournaments that does not guarantee a place in the final four for host schools. That means that Michigan will have to play its way to New York City by winning a pair of home games in early November.

Michigan’s non-conference schedule is also highlighted by North Carolina State, Arkansas and West Virginia. You can view the entire 2012-13 schedule here.

Damn I was hoping Kansas St would be on our side of the bracket. Wanted another shot Bubbles.

Might see him in the championship game.

Will season ticket holders get tickets to the Cleveland State v Bowling Green game?

Very doable bracket for Michigan. I’d be disappointed if they don’t come away with the championship. It’s much weaker than the Maui Classic last year where the field is pretty loaded with quality team

Definitely more manageable than Maui, but I wouldn’t overlook any of the high-major teams in the bracket. I’d definitely call it a disappointment if we didn’t get to the semi’s in NYC. Here’s hoping the 1 seed is deserved and the freshman contribute early!

Just curious now that basketball season is right around the corner, are they doing a preseason open practice/autograph signing like they did last year or was that just to show off the renovations?

  • Hoping for a rematch with Virginia. I want to take them out for how they beat us last season. Go Blue!
