Pre-Game Reading:

  • MGoTweeter

man have to make free throws, second big miss

  • jemblue

We’d be ahead if we simply shot 100% on layups.

  • Mattski

hope that Appling layup doesn’t end up in five key plays, but. . .

  • MGoTweeter

Michigan just not taking advantage of opportunities and sparty has

  • Zok

really just an ugly game. UM is flawed but so is MSU.

  • Scott1222

Keep shooting Tim…they’ll start falling…just have some more confidence…

  • Mattski

Have we come up with a loose ball all day? Luck not really with us either.

  • Scott1222

Missed front end of two 1&1’s…

  • MGoTweeter

I think Michigan has outplayed State in the second half, but guys just have not finished plays and state has been able to get theirs to fall.  First half was a different story, but Michigan should not be upset with the second half play.  Gotta make shots to win though

  • MarcO

Watching Tim and Smotz brick shot after shot is making me grind me teeth.

    • MGoTweeter

especially because they are probably the two weakest defensive players besides the deep bench guys

  • JimC

spartan fans have lighter, fluid, plus couch…..now soaking couch with fluid

    • MGoTweeter

we get it Jim, sparty burns couches.  Lets all just move on.  who cares

  • Zok

    14 fucking rebs…disgusting

    • Ace_maker4

Please show a little more class than dropping the F Bomb multiple times.

      • Zok

sorry..14 rebs deserves an F bomb.

        • Ace_maker4

Maybe if you were a State fan

          • Zok

haha. UM alum, lived in cousins on the hill and studied econ in lorch hall. The rebounding is disgusting in this game. definitely worthy of an F bomb. quit being soft. go drink some tea or something. I’m sure Novak you who probably love, drops plenty of f bombs.

          • Mattski

It’s the endless negativity that’s lame, not the lack of imagination, wherever you live.

  • Sarah

Would have liked to have seen it close. But not very many people win in Breslin. Time to regroup for wednesday.

  • q-sac

is it considered a slump if hardaway hasnt shown up since B1G play started.

  • vaneasy2338

ok burke was thrown to the floor there but no call

    • Zok

wasn’t a foul. its called defense. we have no interior D so we are not used to seeing what it looks like

      • MGoTweeter

eh, it was close.  50/50 play whether or not that is called a foul.  That was not interior D, that was just a guard on guard bodying each other to the hoop.  Michigan does that as well.

  • skitchbeatz

its amazing that we have 40 points.

    • vaneasy2338

i think the rebounds is much more amazing esp. considering that’s much more of a desire/will type of thing to me

      • MGoTweeter

at the same time total rebounds is somewhat an irrelevant stat. The team that misses more shots is going to have less rebounds.

        • skitchbeatz

I think we all know that.. but we’re obviously not rebounding well

          • MGoTweeter

ofcourse not, but Michigan is never going to out rebound state

        • vaneasy2338

msu has nearly 40 rebounds there were plenty of missed shots

  • A2MIKE

one positive is that smotz has looked better on defense, now he just needs to make more shots.

    • Scott1222

What game u watchn…hes been beat off the dribble, out worked on glass and man handled all day..

  • Bluewill

not complaining.  but the officiating is just so weird in college b-ball.  burke really should have gotten a call on that last drive.  lots of contact that obviously affected the shot.  oh well.

  • A2MIKE

green hand checks on every play, wish they would call it

  • jemblue

We really need to find more ways to get Novak involved in the offense.  He’s shooting very well this season.

  • sshow

    Love Novak! No easy hoops!

    • MGoTweeter

and actually shows some class unlike sparty and helps the kid up

      • rlcBlue

Not completely true – Dawson helped Vogrich up after Matt fouled him.

  • Bluewill

    nice sportsmanship Appling

  • MGoTweeter

state keeping michigan in the game right now

  • A2MIKE

green slams burke on the three … no foul…. this is why the big ten can’t win the tourney.  They let them play football in conference play and go up against a team that knows how to draw fouls and its over

    • MGoTweeter

big ten cant win in the tourney?  I think the big ten is pretty high up there on final four teams over the last decade or whatever time period

  • Zok

dawson is a good player for state. going to be a headache going forward.

    • MGoTweeter

good athlete, still has a ways to go before he is good player.  Dont know that he will ever be more than a role player for them.

      • Zok

he makes plays. Would love that kind of athlete as one of our role players. We are bringing in some of our own next year so we’ll be ready. I’m really hoping Mitch has a little nasty streak in him. UM needs it.

        • MGoTweeter

not saying I would not like the kid on my team.  Just that I think State may have other players that are more concerning than he is in the future.  He is the guy that frustrates you because he cleans up misses and gets back door dunks.  But it is the other guys that beat you over the course of a game

          • Zok

thats basically how MSU beat us. Hustle plays, and suffocating pressure on D. they didn’t and never have won using style points. thats also a big part of why osu beat us with that Smith guy getting 8 O rebs and putbacks. guys like that are big for a team. we have NONE of them. I’m hoping Morgan continues to develop that and Mitch brings it from D one. btw, dawson was 5star McD AA. he has talent

          • Zok

we’d both gladly take him. anyways. over and out. I’ll let other people sugarcoat the loss somehow

          • MGoTweeter

u dont think other teams fans say the same things about Novak.  Not that skilled, but would love to have that kid on my team?  Ofcourse every team needs those guys and Michigan has one, he just gets it done in different ways.  More than one way to skin a cat

  • Scott1222

Curious to see final game stats Dylan…good look at usual…

  • Alex

Hope we see them again in BTT.

    • MGoTweeter

definitely, i dont think they can play much better than they played today.  They really are not that skilled of a team, get by out working other teams.  At home that is a lot easier course to follow than on the road or neutral court

    • gpsimms

maybe we’ll beat them in the sweet 16 or something.  thatd be sweet.

    • Heesu

On behalf of all MSU fans – we really, really hope to see you too.

  • A2MIKE

three titles in 30 years is not good

    • Scott1222

Man u really a neg dude…take that mess somewhere else..

  • Zok

well lets keep defending our home turf. Would be great to finish undefeated at home. When we get a few more horses we’ll start winning on the road vs the better teams

  • Bluewill

despite the loss, still feel good about this season and the season to come.  there’s a real rivalry now whether Sparty recognizes or not.  should be fun.

  • A2MIKE

just stating a fact… earlier said smotz is playing better on d, which he did today.  He wasn’t soft like usual.

  • Bluewill

starting next year, Michigan will be able to largely negate Sparty’s height/athleticism/rebounding advantage with the new recruits.  without that, they will struggle.

    • MGoTweeter

not sure I would say that.  Yes having longer more athletic guys helps.  But state coaches their kids differently than michigan.  they put more emphasis on offensive rebounding.  I dont expect michigan to out rebound them in games.  People act like that is the end all be all of basketball, but fact is, it is just one factor.  Michigan has shown that over the course of Beilein’s coaching, you dont have to beat teams up on the boards to win.  Just have to hold your own on the defensive side

      • Bluewill

I agree actually.  Beilein’s teams don’t need to outrebound overall to win – just keep it somewhat respectable and focus on defensive rebounding.  just thinking that we have a good shot at muting this advantage going forward. I doubt we’ll see too many plus 24 rebounding advantages for Sparty starting next year.

  • q-sac

dont have to worry about hardaway going pro next year. unless its in a sport other than basketball…

    • MGoTweeter

he certainly has not taking a step forward this year, but that is not atypical of college sophomores.  hopefully next year he does.  The funny thing right now is that it is not his offense or skill that is holding him back, it is his complete lack of defensive ability.

      • q-sac

agree on the defense but his offense isnt there either. the shots that dropped last year are not. hes in his own head and i keep waiting for him to snap out of it but wow. its more than a slump

        • MGoTweeter

well his offense is not where it should be or where everyone thought it would be this year, but I do think that might have more to do with the departure of Morris than anything on Hardaway.  He misses Morris’ shot creating ability a lot and although Burke has been out of this world as a freshman, he still does not create shots like Morris did.

  • MGoTweeter

oh and just for whoever said the B1G is terrible in the tournament because of officiating…B1G is tied for second in final four appearances since 2000 with 9 along with the Big East.  ACC has 10.  I dont think that is struggling.  The B1G has not had many elite teams, but that is largely a factor of recruiting and recruiting standards more so than anything in the world to do with officiating in conference games

  • Stu Cazzo

Give credit to MSU today, they came out and defended us well, hit some tough shots and got to the glass.

Would like to see them one more time this year, whether that’s the NCAA or BTT.

  • sshow

Thankfully, we still have a month left in the season for Hardaway to continue to grow. I think it’s helpful to keep in mind what Beilein has said about him in a number of press conferences…something to the effect of him learning how teams guard him.

  • Sarah

Look we lost to a good team on their court. Wish we could have played better. Good new is the rest of our games are winnable. No gimmies but we can win them. I see this rivarly going like this each team winning at home. Let’s not give up on this team for a loss. They fight hard. We got some big home games coming lets protect home court. Rubber match in the btt? Go Blue!!

  • Bill

Hopefully they work on how to deal with this kind of defense since other teams will try it too. Izzo mentioned how his big guys helped on penetration it was a little triangle in the lane to stop Trey because he goes so good with either hand you can’t play him only on one side. Seems like they need to go inside out more when this happens and hit their shots. They started to adjust in the second half but missed the shots.
