Pre-Game Reading:

  • Marshall

    Take a three

  • MGoTweeter

    Got a good shot

  • guestavoe

Wish we could have had Levert for both halves

  • Adam St Patrick

Michigan just refuses to make it hard for the other team to score. Forget the bad shots and that stupid call just there. If you can’t get a stop down the stretch, much less other times, you don’t deserve to win.

    • guestavoe

We should look at a 2-3 zone as well

  • MGoTweeter

    Lol

  • John Beilein yelled “next jump ball is us, get a tie up” right before that free throw.

  • arsenal926

Stauskas takes the game over part 2? And wow how about that effort from J-MO

  • jakelam2116

That’s why you put Morgan in there.

  • guestavoe

    Levert towards the rim

  • Marshall

I know everybody is dissatisfied but I just love this team. They fight. They will get better defensively and they will gel and get older. College b-ball is a long season…

    • Chris De Sana

Frustration does not mean we are not pulling for them, just know they did not play a good game.

  • Kam

NIk is hurt.. i doubt its him

  • Burke_Does_Work

Wow…they got the rebound and got it back fuck

  • guestavoe

That is our issue in a nutshell

  • camblue

    BOX OUT jesus

  • MGoTweeter

Ugh levert why are you reaching for the ball. Just stay in front of the guy

    • arsenal926

can’t blame that on one person. Everybody was watching on that one

      • MGoTweeter

Huh? He was guarding the ball. He reached. Guy went by him clean and forced help. Which meant no one there to rotate to box out

        • Kam

          thats not true totally

        • arsenal926

Caris got beat off the ball but had no help defense. If Nik boxes out his gut they’re fine, if McGary is in better help defense they’re fine. That was a bad team play not a bad individual play.

          • MGoTweeter

Just disagree. Levert got help and a lot of it because he got beat so clean. Goal there is to keep
Ball outside the line and fire a jump shot

  • guestavoe

The two big lineup seems useless

  • DingoBlue

That’s a bad loss not just because of the loss but because of the potential injuries to Nik and GRIII.

  • Dustin Stone

    pathetic

  • mistersuits

Stauskas injured. GR3 injured. Loss to Charlotte. == Worst possible outcome.

  • guestavoe

I’m sorry but this is a badly coached team

    • Chris De Sana

      Was tonight

    • DingoBlue

I have a hard time seeing this on the coaching staff. It’s the roster for that last Charlotte bucket.

      • guestavoe

Who is teaching them rebounding fundamentals?
Why does anyone with a pulse burn them on the perimeter?
Why no two man game with our wings and McGary?
Why is Spike playing extended minutes and he is a liability?
Why do our guys dribble around the perimeter instead of probing the paint?
Why does McGary have as many shots as Horford or Morgan?

        • DingoBlue

D rebounding has been pretty good under Beilein (note I’m not saying very good). High pressure jitters you have to believe is also part of the problem. Also, this wouldn’t even be a game if players hit shots in the first half. I think THAT is the bigger problem. The excuse pushes to “we didn’t make shots early” when they had open looks and that’s very uncharacteristic. Beilein teams rely on good offense, tonight was NOT good offense though it wasn’t helped by player injuries.

    • mistersuits

I don’t think it’s a badly coached team but John Beilein’s two foul first half rule may have cost Michigan this game.

      • jemblue

I don’t think the first half was a big issue. Sleepwalking the first 5 minutes of the second half and falling behind by 12 was a bigger problem.

  • jakelam2116

Let the overreactions begin. A reminder, folks: It’s November.

    • DingoBlue

You are very right. People are going crazy here and elsewhere. It’s a bad loss, but with some correctable stuff.

That said, no way that loss will look good at the end of the year.

      • jemblue

Yeah, the problem with this loss is not that it tells us much about where we’ll be in February/March, but that it’s going to hurt our tourney standing.

    • Chris De Sana

They did get beat by a team that probably not a single player was recruited a by a single Big Ten team, yes it is November but the loss exposed a lot of holes that need to be filled.

  • Kam

The game would of been won with simple rebounding and boxing out

    • Adam St Patrick

Or not letting their PG into the paint any time he wanted that.

  • Chris De Sana

As Jake mentioned below it is November but this game showed that we need help in the paint on both ends of the court. Mitch can not rule the paint by himself when our other defenders can not stay in front of the ball handler.

  • Justin

It’s November and Michigan is playing like it like a Tommy Amaker like team. Yeah I said it, I trust the coaching staff but they have their work cut out for them this season. UM deserves to be dropped from the top 25 after this loss tonight.

  • MGoTweeter

Losses are gonna happen. Don’t understand people blaming coaching when guys miss wide open shots and fail in the simple parts of defense. There is no secret formula and you can’t compare to football. Players have to make plays.

They didnt tonight and they lost. Move on and hope they learn and improve. This team has barely played any games together and they are incredibly young.

    • Kam

The simple fact they wont box out is whats frustrating.. that should be taught by coaches

      • MGoTweeter

C’mon it is taught and emphasized. Guys were in position tonight an got pushed out of there including a fifth year senior in Morgan.

  • Tyler Carter

Chill out everyone. Michigan shot as poorly as they’ll shoot all year in the first half of this game. Anyone saying our coaching staff isn’t up to the challenge is badly mistaken. There isn’t a coaching staff in the country that knows how to highlight their strengths better than UM’s. Learn, get better.

    • Chris De Sana

They shot poorly because Charlotte forced the pace, a freshman point guard and others sucked into a pace of play that they simply could not execute.

      • Tyler Carter

In some cases, yes. There were also tons of open looks missed from both the paint and beyond the arc. I thought they were in a position to win this game but didn’t execute, pure and simple.

        • Chris De Sana

Off balance and rushed most of them, again they played at Charlottes pace not their own.

          • Tyler Carter

Ok, then let my point be that this will be the exception rather than the rule. The coaching staff and players will respond to this and this will benefit us in the future.

          • Chris De Sana

We are young and will learn from both wins and losses, this one just exposed our youth more than anyone expected.

          • Tyler Carter

            Agree to agree.

  • Wayman Britt

Wow, that didn’t go well. Not a very good weekend for the Wolverine family.

  • Cazzie

All of our teams are young jt appears

  • guestavoe

We have to go to a full time zone and cede that we cannot go man to man.

    • Jon Parrent

That doesn’t help the fact that they shot 31% tonight…27% from three

    • guestavoe

Vermont coach was just talking about this in his post game interview. We don’t have the personnel with these new rules to play proper D.

    • guestavoe

I also hope people recognize the value of GR3 now, as well.

  • Chezaroo

Taken out of our game with the early foul trouble of Caris, and the injury to GR. To shoot that terrible and still be in the game is encouraging., but we have a lot to work on. Still wonder why we didn’t play some zone to stop that constant penetration. How many points did their guards score?

    • Chris De Sana

      45

      • Chezaroo

        Very, very revealing.

  • pgrom

don’t hold your breath waiting for this team to box out…not something this staff emphasizes.

    • MGoTweeter

      Just flat out wrong

  • JayP

Injuries hurt. Irvin forced to play the whole game without Robinson, Stauskas was essentially missing for the last 8 minutes.

Still, I’m a little concerned with the reliance on 3’s. It’s typical for this team, but aside from Stauskas, there’s not a lot of marksmanship out there. The offense is at its best when Stauskas, LeVert, and the point guards attack the rim, or at least get the ball near the paint.

The defense is what it is. No Beilein team is ever going to be very good defensively. I’m surprised we didn’t see the 1-3-1 after its success on friday. This team is built to run it, but Coach seems pretty stubbornly set on playing that frustrating switch everything man style.

The bigs, outside of healthy, non-winded McGary, are a bit of a disaster.

    • Chris De Sana

They ran it on the last defensive play of the half and gave up a wide open 3

  • Ben

Without Stauskas we lose by 20.
We ” supposedly” have 2 nBA guys – but for some reason can’t do anything against Charlotte.

    • Chris De Sana

Actually they may have more than 2 future NBA players on the team but they are young and they did not play disciplined ball tonight. I would have like to have seen Coach call more TO’s to try and settle them down but hey that is just me.

Keep in mind how many minutes were played by freshman and sophomores, they will learn from this loss and yes it was a bad loss.

  • MGoTweeter

Taking off bc too many of you are freaking out over one basketball game. Please don’t let this place go the way of mgoblog

  • umnyc

Rough game. Hope nik and Glenn aren’t too injured. A little annoyed both were injured on play they chose not to pass to a wide open teammate for a lay up. We’re going to need freshman to grow up fast. Irvin’s offense wasn’t great, but his defense was worse. Gonna be a rough flight home. Hopefully they’ll learn from this.

  • sleep doc

This is a young team without GR 3 out there who is one of their best rebounders. They will be fine. I get that people want to vent as fans but hasn’t the entire tenure of John Beilein taught us that if anyone deserves the benefit of the doubt it is him? They were poor at executing the pick and roll, the missed wide open shots, and they boxed our poorly. They did not execute the fundamentals today and got beat by an inferior team that was far more the aggressor and much more determined. Where they miss Trey is he would control the pace. Derrick isn’t there yet but he will get there. They will all get there. They will have a few more losses, and they may not (probably will not) win the Big ten but they will be in the tournament and they will be very good. This is a good Charlotte team – I’m not sure why people believe they won’t be there at the end of the year.

    • guestavoe

This isn’t a good Charlotte team. They are inefficient offensive team but since we shot so poorly, couldn’t rebound, fouled a ton due to an inability to defend, they won the game.

  • sleep doc

Their guards were better than our guards and they shot far better than we did. Does there need to be any other story? The truth is the pick and roll is our bread and butter and I would volunteer that our best bet might be to have Caris be the starting guard and primary ball handler. He can see over others, he can create his own shot and he can hit the three. I guarantee that this team will get rolling and when they do, they will be a ton of fun to watch. I hope the rest of you that are here not supporting today will come back because then you can maybe catch what should be a really good time.

  • Matt B.

I am as disappointed as anyone, but I really like the pieces on this team. We probably just witnessed the worst shooting game Irvin will ever have (and I loved that he stayed aggressive), Robinson played only 3 healthy mins. and McGary is still finding his way.
These early season losses happen, and it’s just a matter of how the team responds now. They’ll get some primo chances with Duke and Zona coming up on the schedule and a tough Big Ten slate.
Also, a lot of people complaining about the penetration, and I agree that the help defense wasn’t always great, but with the new rules it’s much harder to stop dribble penetration. The defense kept us in the game most of the night, but there were some definite miscommunications late that hurt us.
All in all, this team has the talent, and I hope the hunger, to bounce back and be a top Big Ten team this year. Maybe this loss will be just the thing to take them to another level. Frankly, I think they needed a bit of a wakeup call and if losing to Charlotte doesn’t do it, then nothing will.
There’s still lots to optimistic about

    • Matt B.

Also, someone needs to talk some sense into Beilein regarding his “2 fouls in the 1st half and sit the player for the rest of the half” rule. I love Beilein but that strategy is just a killer. LaVert was essentially “fouled out” for half the game. And LaVert ended the game with 2 fouls.

  • sleep doc

No team with that type of guard play can be a bad team long term. They beat georgetown, and northeastern which will both be good teams by years end. I’m not saying we didn’t have a hand in losing but this isn’t like beating Vermont by one point at home. We lost to a Charlotte team that came to play. We will get better as the year goes on and win a lot of these types of games. Caring about this game in November is ridiculous. Except it as a loss, turn the page and trust this coaching staff. They haven’t done ANYTHING to make us doubt them in their time here.

  • ben

I’m sad now :( Who missed their assignment on that last play though? Anyone have DVR or anything to see?

    • umnyc

I think Irvin got caught watching the shot an not boxing out his man
