Pre-Game Reading:

  • Scott Kremkow

this aversion to blocking out will get us killed against State.

  • Kam

    Glenn isn’t boxing out

  • Scott Kremkow

Let it go Jennings, its Puerto Rico

  • Scott Kremkow

    a Jack Sikma comparison!

  • jakelam2116

Is it just me or does Robinson miss every 3 back right rim?

    • guestavoe

He shoots on the way down a ton.

      • jakelam2116

When Stauskas releases from 3, 90% of the time I think it’s going in.

When Lavert releasees from 3, 50% of the time I think it’s going in.

When Robinson releases from 3 (at least now), 10% of the time I think it’s going in.

  • Scott Kremkow

McGary with the athletic offensive rebound and putback at 14:40

  • guestavoe

Parker and Hood are going to feast with these late closeouts

    • Kam

yup. Thats why i said they were a badddd match up. we cant guard them

  • Scott Kremkow

Michigan 55, Long Beach State 38

  • guestavoe

lol Caris def needs another 15 lbs. He flew like a rag doll trying to get through that screen.

    • Kam

      10lbs

      • Kam

that would put him at 200 where tim was

  • Cory

Has Beilein ever talked in length about why this team is so bad at boxing out?

    • LBSU has 4 offensive boards on 23 misses.

      • Cory

Right, but I’m watching our guys miss box outs. Half the time they’re not even looking for them.

  • Cazzie

    Morgan has woeful mitts

    • jakelam2116

I just Tweeted this, it’s as if Horford infected him during the offseason (and now Horford’s cured).

  • Cazzie

Not currently a top 20 team.

    • guestavoe

      Wrong

    • Tyler Carter

      But…technically they are.

    • Chris De Sana

I was just thinking the same thing. So many holes to fill before we are to be considered a top team. Our point guard situation, our defense, rebounding and probably most important is GR3 finding the sweet spot at his new position.

    • guestavoe

Every team not in the top 5 is saying the same thing.

    • MGoTweeter

Wasn’t the number one team in the country in two tied games late against nobodies at home this past week? It happens. Michigan isn’t playing well at all yet still controlling the game

  • MGoTweeter

Michigan is over dribbling like crazy

  • Scott Kremkow

its game 4, we are fine.

  • Scott Kremkow

i believe in Beilein more than the referees

  • Chris De Sana

Nik has to do more with the ball when in his hands and shot clock under 10 seconds, that will be a major issue this year w/o Burke and THjr

  • arsenal926

    Beilein for the win!!!!!

  • guestavoe

Nik might not be back next year.

    • guestavoe

If he does it against top competition of course lol

    • Cory

He’s not going anywhere with next year’s draft class looking the way it is.

      • Kam

He will wait until the next year and be a first rounder

      • guestavoe

The top ten is set but outside of that, I am not so sure.

    • gobluemd16

He may inevitably be ready at the end of this year, but his body isn’t ready yet in my opinion.

  • Kam

    NIK

  • mistersuits

Michigan hasn’t drawn a single charge yet this year, have they?

    • Kam

      mitch did today

    • Mitch took one in the first half.

      • mistersuits

Ah nice, no more donut in that category!

  • Scott Kremkow

    Stauskas 7 for 10, Robinson 5 for 9, LeVert 5 for 10, Walton 2 for 9, McGary 3 for 3, Albrecht 1 for 4, Horford 1 for 2,

    • Scott Kremkow

      Irvin 1 for 2

  • Scott Kremkow

Can you imagine the team we could have next year with a year of seasoning, if McGary and Robinson and Stauskas all came back??!! wow.

    • Kam

      2 are NOT coming back

  • Cazzie

Strangely, dakitch right about this team’s lack of grit

  • realdmt

Need Walton to get it going one of these games eventually…

  • guestavoe

Dakich should be on JB staff

  • mistersuits

You know what, Dan Dakich is suddenly a much more pleasant announcer to listen to during Michigan games. Something’s changed…

    • Burke_Does_Work

I’m assuming you’re being sarcastic, but if not, it’s because his son Andrew Dakich is a walked on the team as a freshman this fall.

  • Scott Kremkow

I felt all last season Dakich is a big time admirer of this Michigan Team despite his history with Knight and IU

  • DingoBlue

Have to agree with Dan, why are we not giving McGary any touches? Boggling.

    • guestavoe

JB will figure it out. We have so much growth and wrinkles we can add to this team.

  • Scott Kremkow

Guys we have a game tomorrow, vs VCU, remember VCU? Full court press for forty minutes VCU? let McGary rest!

    • Cory

Easy on the pepsi, Fuller. Don’t count out FSU.

  • guestavoe

See Dakich thinks the Caris as lead guard makes sense lol!!!!

  • Scott Kremkow

with 2:23 to go Michigan finally cracks 20 on the lead

  • Scott Kremkow

whoever we would play in the final sunday would be a letdown to VCU, or the Noles for that matter,

  • Chris De Sana

The one stat that has to change if we are going to be successful is Walton can not be the most active shooter on a per minute basis.

  • Dana

I know people have GRIII as a lock to go pro but from what I’ve seen he needs another year. He’s still lacking in lateral quickness and can’t handle the ball. As soon as Mitch enters the game he jumps out as a pro talent. The only time GRIII looks like a pro is when he’s dunking.

    • guestavoe

      Andre Iguodala says hi

      • Kam

iggy is a great ball handler(played PG all game with curry out) an elite defender and good passer. Glenn is only an elite athlete right now

        • guestavoe

lol Andre is not a great ballhandler. You all fail to realize that the NBA game is WAY more wide open and fast. Glenn will be better in the NBA than he is in college.

          • Kam

you are silly if you think iggy isn’t a good ball handler.. He plays PG a lot of times for GS.. he came out of college as a SG. he can dribble far better than glenn. And i know the NBA i watch

          • guestavoe

What? I followed that Arizona team. The knock on him was perimeter shooting and dribbling. He was in no way a SG.

          • guestavoe
          • Kam

He played SG at Denver last year.. all year he plays PG almost 15 minutes a game for GS so curry can go off screens.. He isn’t a great shooter but what I’ve seen the last 2 years says he can dribble. GS even said they got him for his PG abilities so he can play the PG and curry can play off the ball

          • guestavoe

So you are comparing Iguodala in his 7th or 8th year to sophomore year Glenn Robinson. What I am telling you is at the same age they were similar prospects. Glenn will be better in the open court and free flowing NBA game.

          • Kam

no haha I’m just saying at the moment Iggy is far more complete. Glenn i agree will be fine in the open court IF he finds a team that likes to run. Glenn may or may not turn into that type of player. He has the potential

          • guestavoe

I understand. I’m just trying to clear up the misconception that scouts won’t like him be cause he isn’t fully realized as a player.

      • Kam

Also iggy is 10X better at defense

      • mattD

Iggy was a much better hall handler than GR3 in college, and damn sure a better defender

        • guestavoe

Iggy was not a good ballhandler in college. He worked extremely hard at that in Philly. He was a better defender but he wasn’t guarding powerfowards, either.

    • Kam

he might NOT be ready BUT he WONT stay another year

    • Chris De Sana

For the most part I agree, the one pro move he made was the pump fake couple dribbles and knock down the closer jumper, other than that he does not rebound well in space due to no blocking out and his over all defense is less than average.

  • gobluemd16

I haven’t yet read the comments for this open thread but I have a few thoughts. I thought we were really unimpressive in this game, as unimpressive as you could be in a 20 point win. I think Walton really needs to cut down on the outside shooting, I know he wasn’t bad today, but most often he could make one extra pass and we would have another (better) shooter taking that open shot. Also, Glenn has still not impressed me at all with his ability to create, I just dont think it is going to happen. The defensive rebounding was also prettty bad from my view. I know they only got 6 O rebounds, but a lot of the time it felt like the ball just bounced our way and guys were clearly not boxing out. Horford, especially, to be frank, was pretty horrible tonight. On the flip side, Nik played really really well and is clearly our go-to option on offense and should have the ball in his hands down the stretch. Caris looked pretty good as well. I am not sure if this is just me, but with regards to Walton, I feel so much more comfortable on offense when Spike is in the game. I know he isn’t strong at defense and Walton has more upside, but I would like to see him more especially early on, until Walton is more comfortable. Mitch should get more touches down low, he looks back at full speed and should start against VCU/FSU. Overall, I wasn’t very impressed with this game but I guess it is hard to play all-out when you are up by a big margin.

    • Kam

      I agree 100%

    • guestavoe

Glenn didn’t really try to create or iso this game. Lots of curls and dribbles into jumpshots.

I’d rather put Caris at lead guard than insert Spike in the lineup. Boxing out and closing on shooters is a huge issue.

      • Chris De Sana

Most important part of your post is it always appears GR3 is not giving full effort. I think part of it is the offense that is being run but he has to be better on the glass at both ends of the court, having the highest vertical doe snot matter if you do not use it.

        • Kam

I just don’t think he has the ability to create. Thats why he isn’t put in those situations.. Thats why they use him on curls and screens imo

        • gobluemd16

He also just lacks energy/intensity on defense too.. I thought there were multiple opportunities when Mitch had really good position inside tonight, and after ball screens, and the guards just didn’t deliver the pass. He was visibly frustrated after one specific play

    • DingoBlue

I’m with you on being unimpressed. It’s great to win by 20+, but I found myself frustrated at some of the offense that ran. Obviously a lot more kinks/wrinkles to work out when you’re moving away from a Trey Burke dominated offense. I think it’s going to take most of the nonconference to get a real sense of this team.

  • Kam

Caris needs to spend more time as the lead ball handler

  • Blue Basketeer

I’m with others in being underwhelmed, even by a 24 point win. We just looked soft..on defense, rebounding…no physicality and no toughness. Horford and Morgan had only 5 points and 2 rebounds between them, and looked completely out of the flow. The fact that Walton led the team in rebounds and Robinson led in assists tells me that this team is still struggling to find its identity.

Bottom line, we only did one thing well tonight, but we need to get a lot more things together if we’re going to have a chance on the nights we shoot 27% on threes instead of 47%.

    • gobluemd16

I think the short term fix is giving Nik as many looks as possible, letting Caris play more point or have the ball in his hands a lot to probe the D, and give Mitch more touches. Those aspects of the offense should be used every game

  • gobluemd16

Does anyone know what WE WORK stands for? if not, want to ask Dylan? Also seeing a lot of new people on this board..

  • Indiana_Matt

Man, we have some great talent. Excited about our potential. But we have some work to do, no doubt. And I was frustrated for Mitch. I want to see our guards frustrated that they can’t get him more shots, not looking content to bypass him play after play. But we will get his corrected.
