Glenn Robinson III, Mitch McGary officially returning for sophomore seasons

Glenn Robinson III and Mitch McGary are officially returning to the University of Michigan.

Michigan’s two talented freshmen had been projected as first round picks by most but opted to return to school for their sophomore seasons.

McGary and Robinson addressed the media this afternoon. We’ll have full coverage from the press conference to follow. Here are the official quotes from the University of Michigan release.
“After gathering all the information and sitting down with my family, I have decided to continue my career at the University of Michigan,” said McGary. “There is still plenty for me to work on as both a player and person. Michigan is the right place for me to continue growing, and I am excited about what lies ahead. In a short period of time, this university, this community and all the Wolverine fans have embraced me, and I am truly thankful for that. I look forward to representing Michigan with my teammates and to becoming a leader of this team.”

“I will be staying at Michigan after careful thought and consideration,” said Robinson III. “This past season was an unbelievable journey and a great learning experience for me. I still have a lot of areas to develop in my game, and I am looking forward to doing that at Michigan with this coaching staff and my teammates.”

“It was important we gave Glenn and Mitch, and their families, as much time as they needed to make the best and most informed decision they could with all the information they gathered,” said U-M head coach John Beilein. “We are excited to see them coming back. Both are a joy to coach and their enthusiasm, work ethic and passion for Michigan is second to none. They improved throughout the season and have only scratched the surface of their potential as players and leaders.”

Congrats Glenn and Mitch! Look forward to watching you guys play for at least another year.

  • Matt

    Whoo hoo!

  • Great news! Looking forward to nest season already!

  • jemblue

I am thrilled. These guys are going to be leaders next year. I can’t wait to watch them again!

  • Matzio

Thinking about our squad next year has me salivating all over again.

  • gobluemd16

Phew, what a relief! Think I am going to have to change my avatar to a new pair of friends. Those who stay..

    • gobluemd16

Glad that Mitch and Glenn are returning, but I am nervous for the real announcement of whether Spike decides to go pro #HALOL

  • Micah

  • Kenny

no surprise, but nonetheless relieved. Good for the players and good for the team.

  • AADave

Wow. This team may be even more talented this coming year if the incoming freshmen are as good as advertised.

Think about it. We’ll have a much more experienced group of five fabulous sophomores, an incoming 5 star wing, another top 50 PG and another highly regarded 4 star big man. We lose two starters but gain three future stars.

    • A2AJ

The one thing we now know is to never underestimate the value/poise/confidence/work ethic/heroism/sense of responsibility/any number of positive character traits of Trey Burke. The awards only reinforced what we saw all year.

So let’s not get so ahead of ourselves and let’s hope that Trey imbued a piece of himself in everyone else’s souls; you NEED fire, not just talent.

And hell yes, future’s lookin’ bright!

  • Champswest

    We On!

  • DB

McGary may be better, but I think Robinson was more important to return. We could easily have played Morgan and Horford at the 5, but we don’t really have substitute for Robinson at the 4.

    • Nick

I agree but did you hear GR and the coaches say he will be playing the 3 next year? Where did this come from? I hope its not a matter of the coaches just telling Glen whatever he wanted to hear..

      • Indiana_Matt

That would seem out of character for them to just tell him what he wants to hear.

        • deSal

that’s where he should be playing, and slide stauskas to the 2

          • deSal

and i’d guess zak takes grobs spot at the four and as a 3rd option

          • Nick

I can’t imagine Zach playing the 4. I understand the the arguments for moving GR to 3, but I look at it as having your best 5 on the floor. Hard to speculate who the 5 will be now, but if I had to guess, I would say Walton Stauskas Irvin Robinson Mcgary. Also, I’m keep seeing that the 3 is GR’s “natural position” but the game is changing. Look at Carmelo and the Knicks thriving playing small ball. Traditional 3s are being asked to be 4s now.

          • Indiana_Matt

could see Zak as a “6th starter” providing offensive pop when he comes in for either Stauskas or Robinson. If Levert comes along this summer and Spike continues to improve, we really could have a case where the second unit doesn’t just hold the lead but they run it up.

      • umumum

The logjam will be at the 2 and the 3. GRIII is a 3 and its what the coaches should be telling him. Everyone wanted Glen back to improve his game (and for obvious selfish reasons). He does that by playing his natural position. We can’t have it both ways. And from what I see and read, its not likely Irvin will be playing the 4. Beilein has his system, but has shown great flexibility the past 2 years. He will need to make adjustments again next year to accommodate team and individual needs.

    • Guest

Donnal would be a substitute at the 4.

  • UM Hoops Fan

I don’t like the piping on GRIII’s shirt! And what’s with buttoning up the top button?!?!
Just kidding, great news, and I’m excited to watch those guys in whatever the UM uniforms look like for at least another year. It’s going to be another great season.

  • gobluemd16

Could the five freshman (will be sophs) start at the beginning of next season? I’d lean towards Irvin over Caris, but I would be surprised if the other four don’t

    • gobluemd16

Well, Beilein just said he is going to move GRIII to small forward and try and play two bigs, so I’d imagine the starters would be: Spike, Nik, Glenn, JMo, and Mitch with Walton, Zak Irvin, Caris, Bielfeldt, and Horford off the bench.. wow that is prettty good

      • Walton will start over Spike. Just my opinion. Spike is a backup pg, and a damn good one at that.

        • zach

seems like who starts at PG is going to be determined by how well each does in practice learning the offense.

        • Brad S

I’d guess Spike will begin the season as the starter, and Walton will take over soon after. Similar to what happened with Burke

          • gobluemd16

I agree, I was just referring to the start of the season. I, too, think that Walton will take over at some point.

  • John T. MacLean

The problem now: replacing the five departing seniors — practice players who knew the system.

    • jemblue

I wonder if McLimans might decide to come back now?

    • Mattski

I think they should be able to come pretty close to scrimmaging ten high-quality players. Like to hear what someone else thinks about this; should have some very high-quality practices next fall.

      • mikey_mac

I think they can put together a competitive 5-on-5. But scrimmaging is different than fielding a helpful scout team in preparation for specific teams, which is where the seniors really excelled (according to Beilein).

  • salama

I think Michigan will be ranked #2 after Kentucky now. Amazing.

Florida, Duke, Memphis, MSU (if Payne joins Harris in returning), Okie State, UNC, Marquette, Arizona and VCU look like the other potential champs to me. Add Kansas (they might sneak into contender status anyways) or FSU if Wiggins picks one.

    Donnal can redshirt now, too!

  • ChathaM

The Arizona-Michigan game just became one of 2013-14’s must-see matchups.

  • Little Perm

Michigan isn’t about one-and-dones (unless they want to, in which case Michigan supports their decisions).

    • Joel_C

Is Jamal Crawford the only ‘one-and-done’ Michigan’s ever had?? And he only played like 8 games, you could hardly count that.

  • Mike

does anyone know where to buy that vneck sweater beilein was wearing? thanks

  • Joel_C

Wow where the heck was I – I completely missed this. This is a great outcome to have 2/4 potential draft entrants stay. The best realistic possibility was to only have Trey leave, but Tim leaving seemed fairly likely. This is very exciting!
