4eb98glouqbreir8f1frfbfez[1]Michigan will face West Virginia next season as part of the Brooklyn Hoops Winter Hoops Festival at the newly constructed Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY.

Here are John Beilein and David Brandon’s comments from the Barclays Center press release:

“Playing in the new Barclays Center will truly be a great opportunity for us,” said Michigan Head Coach John Beilein. “Michigan has such a strong alumni base in New York City and surrounding areas that we could not turn down the chance to play in front of them. I have many fond memories of my time at West Virginia. Facing the Mountaineers and their tremendous coach, Bob Huggins, will give Michigan another opportunity to play against one of the very best teams in college basketball today.”

“We are excited about playing West Virginia at Barclays Center,” said Dave Brandon, the Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics for the University of Michigan. “We have a great group of alumni in New York and the surrounding areas. Playing in Brooklyn presents a unique opportunity for our men’s basketball program. It’s something that our current players are really looking forward to experiencing.

Tickets will go on sale in March and information is expected to be released shortly. The game will be televised on ESPN’s family of networks.

A trip to the Barclays Center would be the second trip east planned for the Wolverines next season as Michigan is also expected to participate in the NIT Season Tip Off at Madison Square Garden.

The subplots are fun for the fans I guess, but I doubt either team cares since none of the players that will play in the game were around when Beilein left WVU for Michigan.  Do we know any other parts of the nonconference schedule yet?  I assume away game at ISU, home to Arkansas, home game against some ACC team, and doesn’t the Pac12/B1G thing start next year as well?  That would be 5 bcs games right there, so it would seem a tournament would be out of the question.

As someone who grew up in WV watching people get pittsnogled under John Beilein this is a very interesting matchup for me. That aside, this seems to be another solid OOC game to add to our SOS next year.

Dylan, you should add @ISU to the 2012-13 schedule page.  That would make it 6 BCS games (including 3 neutral and 1 away), + @Bradley:twitter + Cleveland State (a high quality horizon league team).  And that’s not including any B1GvsPAC game.  Should be a high quality nonconference schedule again.

Okay, now back to this year!

    • Pretty sure at Iowa State is in Dec ’13.

        Ah, that explains it.  Thanks.
