Michigan’s early season victories and trip to Maui feel like ages ago and the Wolverines will finally close out their regular season campaign this afternoon at Penn State. The Wolverines begin the final day of the tumultuous journey with a chance at earning a share of the Big Ten Championship, with a little help. Tip off is scheduled for 1 p.m. eastern and today’s game will be broadcast on ESPN with Dan Dakich and Jim Barbar on the call.

Pre-Game Reading:

  • Mattski

Finishing first halves fersure an issue.

  • MGoTweeter

Dumb turnovers only reason this is remotely a game. Hopefully Michigan comes out hard in second half and puts this away

  • Michigan 1.37 PPP, Penn State .99 PPP. 28 possession half.

    U-M: 88% eFG% (70% on twos, 70% on threes), 28% TO Rate, 25% OR Rate, 30% FTA/FGA
    PSU: 44% eFG% (28% twos, 57% threes), 28% TO Rate, 47% OR Rate, 24% FTA/FGA

Michigan is shooting the ball so well that nothing else really matters. Second half keys are to do a better job on the defensive glass and stop turning it over. Some sort of shooting regression is only natural.

  • Michigan was 7-of-10 on twos and 7-of-10 on threes in the first half. That’s balanced offense right?

  • William Kerridge

ugghhh do not let these clowns hang around, put this game away early…

  • William Kerridge

Who is the better PG? Burke as a Freshman or Morris as a Sophomore?

    • jemblue

Morris was a better distributor.  Burke’s the better shooter.  Both finish very well.  I’d give a slight edge overall to Morris but it’s much closer than I ever would have guessed.

    • Blue

My pick is Burke. We under-performed as a team for 1.5 of Morris’s 2 years. Burke knows how to manage a game better.

      • jemblue

The question was about Morris as a sophomore.  I don’t think it’s fair to say we underperformed for the first half of last year.  We were extremely young.

        • Blue

I’ll still take Burke over a sophomore Morris. All I meant was I think we overrate how good Morris really was. Obviously, I think he was great last year, but not as good as Burke this year.

          • jemblue

I don’t think we overrate Morris.  I think we underrate him, if anything.  He averaged 15 ppg and 6.7 apt, and shot 49% from the floor.  Burke’s averaging 14.5 and 4.8 and shooting 42%.

I think some fans are still a little upset with Morris for going pro and sell him short.  He had a fantastic year last year.  What’s amazing to me is that Burke is nearly at the same level now, as a freshman.

          • Blue

I guess in pro terms, who would you rather have. Rondo or Deron Williams. In my opinion, I’ll take Williams and have always thought Rondo is overrated because he’s limited offensively.

  • jemblue

Man, Zach, come on.  You were 89% at the stripe coming in!

  • James

We keep on fouling with Frazier’s elbow…

  • Evan Smotrycz is feeling it. He looks so confident offensively. Off the dribble, off the pump, from distance. He feasts on mediocre teams.

  • Thomasgritter

Couple of good drives and kick outs by stu! Beautiful to watch!

  • William Kerridge

I know it is Penn State and everything, but if Smotz gets it going over the next couple of weeks we could be real dangerous.

  • DB

Morris was better.  Higher offensive rating with a worse cast around him (well, the same exact cast, but worse because one year younger).  That’s not an insult on Burke, people seem to forget that Morris was really good last year and basically created all of our offense.

    • Blue

Good points, but I don’t know how people could say better cast this year but then turn around and say Smot and Timmy aren’t as good as last year. So Morris played with a better Tim and better Smot, albeit younger.

      • jemblue

But you could also argue that those two (especially Tim) might have been better with Morris there to set them up.  He and Tim had a great chemistry going.

In any event, they’re both great PGs and it’s nitpicking either way.

        • Blue

Agreed, happy to have both play in the Maize and Blue.

  • James

It’s hard to compare Burke and Morris. They’re such different players. It would’ve been great to watch them play in the same backcourt. That’s for sure.

  • DB

Smot also seems to really like playing with Morgan at the 5.  Thankfully, next year Smot should never have to play 5.

  • DB

Apparently, you can cut a 17 point lead to 15 or 14 with a free throw

  • Rkwboo

I take UM is winning comfortably seeing that a few comments here are about morris/burke than the game.A good sign.

    • Michigan up 54-37 with 10 to play.

      • Rkwboo

        Good deal!

    • Blue

It’s been tough to get into the game with their lame crowd, even though Big Ten Title may be on the line.

  • William Kerridge

If you look at the big picture, THJ and Smotz have been worse this year than last year while Morgan, Novak and Douglass have all improved.

We are going to finish at least 2nd in the B10 and be a 3rd or 4th seed in the NCAA tournament, the difference is Burke and I would take him over a sophomore Morris.

  • this is ridiculous. Step on someones throat instead of letting them back in.

  • MGoTweeter

Michigan has stopped running crisp offense.

  • Michigan fell asleep at the wheel and is suddenly only up 8 with 6 minutes to play.

  • jemblue

Does Tim need new shoes?  That’s twice today that he’s just slipped and fallen down with the ball.

  • William Kerridge

    Really?

  • just wow…this team has issues finishing

  • Matt Peck

    lets go boys

  • William Kerridge

Is that Dylan in the “worst state ever” t-shirt?

  • Mattski

John B late with the TO again. He’s always been good about that, but. . .

  • MGoTweeter

Ugh hardaway is horrible with the ball

  • That’s a 13-0 PSU run.

  • Ahoipkem

    So much for that lead…

  • William Kerridge

    BURKE!!!

  • Blue

    Wow Burke! Nice.

  • jemblue

Dakisch needs to just shut up sometimes.

  • unreal

  • William Kerridge

    nooooooooo…vak

  • And Novak is gone. Wow.

  • William Kerridge

when did tommy amaker kidnap Beilein and start running the offense?

  • James

Hey Dan: It’s called running out the clock.

  • Michigan is just sitting around a iso-ing Trey. I’d like to see them try to run a little more offense here. This one is too close for comfort and it shouldn’t be.

  • MGoTweeter

I will say this for Morris, he was worlds better than Burke in late clock situations

    • Burke looks for his shot (esp the three) a bit too much late in clocks maybe but I thought that was a decent look to Tim. Not to mention the four point play is a pretty big late clock play.

    • Blue

      Yep

    • Vmvp9

Although that’s where size comes into play

  • Blue

Go Blue! The “Shouldn’t Be” Cardiac Kids! We’ll take it.

  • MGoTweeter

Well Michigan made it interesting but heck of a b1g season. Hopefully the capper comes in about three hours

  • DB

Wisconsin up 12 late, so looks like 2 seed locked in

  • jemblue

Whew . . . a win is a win.  I can’t believe we’re now just one Ohio win from the Big Ten title!
