Iowa 75, Michigan 59

Dylan Burkhardt

After winning ugly at home against Northwestern, Michigan suffered an ugly loss in Iowa City. The Michigan offense never found a groove as Iowa cruised to a 16 point home victory. The loss pushes Michigan to 14-4 (4-2 B10) on the season with a Tuesday night home game against Michigan State ahead. Post game coverage to follow in the coming minutes and hours.

Time to rebound and get ready for Michigan State

The energy seemed very low. It seemed like Iowa grabbed just about every loose ball. It didn’t help that Michigan, specifically Hardaway, couldn’t hit a shot. I also think Burke needs to push it more as the offense is bogging down in BIG play. However, more effort is a good place to start.

rough game to watch. a few quick points:

burke can go coast to coast at will – needs to push the issue more often.
smotrycz’s mug drives me nuts. he checks out mentally if things don’t go his way early.
energy wasn’t there today. after suffocating D vs. wisky – just a poor effort.
it seems like novak and stu have gotten away from driving the ball like they did to start the season. wish they would get back to that.

No offensive flow at all. No set plays. Burke kept missing the roll man on the pick and roll all day. And even though he was scoring, he was pulled out of the game with 2 fouls in the first half.. Coach has to realize by sitting the floor leaders in the first half M will be playing catchup in the second, with no offensive purpose, resorting into threes from way downtown, and one-on-one individual efforts Smot was comatose for most of the game, while Tim was trying hard. Defense was not there as well.

The game was almost a mirror to the NW game, as far as offense. If M plays like this in conference play, we should be happy if we finish 50-50.

Burke dont trust the bigs to catch it so he keeps it. Hes used to Sullinger and Weatherspoon and they catch everything and FINISH

Gotta get it together – brutal stretch of schedule coming up: Michigan St x2, @ Arkansas, Indiana, @ Ohio St, @ Purdue. O_O

…and Northwestern just beat Michigan St. There are NO easy wins in the Big Ten, especially on the road

Most every loss comes by way of the same thing; our lack of ability to generate anything in the paint. The best way to stop a cold streak is having someone who can get to the rim and finish and/or get to the line, Michigan just simply does not do it enough.

The pick & roll has been gone the last 2 games as has the curl and roll with THjr. Both plays force the defense to at least pay attention in the paint and allow for far more open 3’s at the arc.

I think when Smot gets cold they need to get his fanny in the paint as well, his post game is far better than it was last year and against teams like Northwestern and Iowa who do not have a ton of length maybe a few bunnies down low and/or free throws would help his confidence.

All said next year that will change as a high quality big man who is not allergic to the paint is on the way.
