It wasn’t pretty but Michigan survives, knocking off Northwestern in overtime by a final score of 66-64. The Wolverines move to 4-1 in Big Ten play and travel to Iowa on Saturday. Full post game coverage coming soon.

Michigan appeared to get some favorable calls near the end of the game and in OT, but what they hey…

yeah… like the tech on Morgan and the final foul Timmy.

    • I don’t agree with you

and the foul on Timmy with 10 sec left in regulation that gave Northwestern the final shot.

Northwestern had their chances and couldn’t finish the game off, that is why they haven’t been to the Tourny.

I’m generally a very negative person, but I think that this game was huge for Michigan.  I think they will learn a lot from this game, and it’s great that a bad game like this still turned out to be a win.

Michigan can learn a lot from such a poor showing, and Beilein will have them ready to go for Iowa and MSU.

Escape. Plain and simple. The Wolverines survived the horrible start, some horrible shot selection in the second half, Morgan’s technical in OT and Hardaway’s braincramp at the end. Fortunate to get this victory, but at the end of the day, we’ll take it. Somehow the boys found a way to grind one out.

you lose some close games and win some close games, luck goes both ways. There are no bad wins or good losses, only good luck wins and bad luck losses.

these are the types of games in the past, that we lose but the spirit of this team comes back to get a big W,   have to protect homecourt in the Big Ten.   I am so glad we have Trey Burke on our team, great leader and scorer and controls the offense greatly.  I want Burke over Craft at OSU.

It was a poor shooting performance, but I also thought that NW defended some of the UM staples pretty well. UM has gotten a lot out of the high ballscreen for Burke, and NW hedged hard on it all night and forced Burke well beyond the top of the key. He wasn’t able to turn a corner and attack off the ballscreen as consistently as he has in most other games. I expect to see the same type of thing from Iowa this weekend. NW also was clearly not going to present UM with backdoor cut opprtunities, and they were very disciplined about that all night.

Shurna is a tough matchup, and Smotrycz/McLimans had no chance against him in the first half. Novak was tremendous against him in the second half.

UM seems to view rebounding as a team effort, and that’s exactly what a somewhat undersized group needs to do. Rebounding numbers among the 5 starters were very consistent.

Every conference game seems like such a grind. Great fun, but so gutwrenching to watch.

Great take on the game, thanks.

I agree, I think that Michigan’s rebounding this year has really made the difference in their overall team improvement.

I also wanted to add that, except for the major error at the end of OT, Hardaway had an excellent defensive game. He’s taken some heat lately for his defensive effort, but he spent time guarding Hearn and Crawford (mostly after switches) tonight, and did a very good job. He was always conscious of the backdoor cut, and didn’t get burned once that I recall.

northwestern missed some chances, but michigan missed plenty of open 3s to put some distance between the 2 squads……..i recall stu and thj having a a couple chances to get the lead to 5 but failed………you never know how games will play out ….that was a pretty emotionally exhausting game
