We’ve had a busy day on the blog over the last 24 or so hours with our new five plays feature, Big Ten power rankings, a few links, and an interview with Mitch McGary, but, Michigan does in fact have a game tonight. The Wolverines face the Concordia University Cardinals, who will make the short five mile trip over to Crisler Arena. The Cardinals, a member of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference in the NAIA, are 5-4 on the season (0-2 WHAC) and are coming off a 100-98 loss to University of Michigan Dearborn.

Previewing Concordia based on the four factors is probably a fruitless cause. Their 51% effective field goal percentage this season is pretty good but that obviously comes against significantly worse competition. Considering they scored 98 points in their last contest, you won’t be surprised that they average 76 possessions per contest. The Cardinals are led by Belleville guard Marius Williams, who averages 17 points per game while 6-foot-6 240 pound Rocko Holmes anchors the post with 14 points and eight rebounds per contest.

Instead of actually previewing the game in depth, we’ll just turn this post into an open thread for tonight’s game. This game won’t count against Michigan’s RPI, win or lose, but it technically will count toward its actual record. Michigan should obviously win this game relatively easily, I’ll be paying close attention to Tim Hardaway Jr., who will look to snap out of his shooting slump.

  • JimC

I can’t/won’t watch this game. So I am counting on you people here to make it interesting.

  • Grey

Can someone please post a stream for this game?

    • Dylan Burkhardt

Doubt this game will be streamed… If not for any other reason than it’s Concordia.

    • I wish we had a dedicated BTN streamer…but, imagine they lock that down pretty quick.

  • AG2

I took my LSAT at Concordia University. Their campus looked like a summer campground.

    • YpsiTuckyBoy

AG2, are you currently a lawyer or in law school?

Also, I’m wondering how much Concordia had to pay to license that logo from Microsoft’s clip art collection.

      • AG2

I finished law school last year. I went to MSU Law. Yeah, I know.

        • YpsiTuckyBoy

Not judging. You do what you do. Practicing in the area? I’m kinda freaking out since there are no jobs around here and I’m graduating soon.

  • sullycu

is it weird that I’m still excited?

  • sullycu

despite the fact its against an NAIA opponent

  • Grey

yea same…thats why i want a stream. any kind of michigan bball or football im all in

    • Casey, CO

Me too! Except I have to leave soon to do my final for english :(

  • wayman britt

Looking to see how Eso plays tonight, hope he gets alot of playing time.

  • Casey, CO

I wanna see Stu continue to stroke it

  • peterklima

This is an official “junkie” game. If you are posting in this thread (like me) and plan to follow the game or are excited to watch it, then you are “all in” and probably beyond recovery. GO BLUE!

  • CJD

I agree that tonight could be a nice chance to get THJ into some sort of rhythm. Also if Horford plays or not will determine his potential redshirt status.

A bonus would be pounding the ball inside against a probable smaller and less talented opponent.

First trip the ball was actually passed inside; how about that!!!

  • Casey, CO

D-Mo for 3 to start the game

  • CJD

That shot by Morgan is a must have to succeed in the Big Ten!

  • wayman britt

Wow this is like the varsity versus the freshman in high school.

  • Dylan Burkhardt

17-6 at the first TV timeout. Michigan scoring at will, shooting 7 of 10 from the field. There isn’t much that Concordia can do.

  • skitchbeatz

I’m worried that we’ll turn into a jump shooting team beyond this game.

    • CJD

Valid concern; I hope that Mogan’s ability to hit that jumper will open up back door cuts to the rim from the wing players.

  • AG2

If ever there was a game Michigan could drop 100, this would be it. Man if only we had Morgan and Sims together last year!

    • CJD

We had a decent big last year to go along with Sims and coach rarely if ever put them on the court at the same time.

  • wayman britt

McLiman’s shoot looks terrible, I thought he was suppose to be a good form shooter.

    • CJD

My bigger concern was that when he and THJ got the switch they wanted he did not take a much smaller defender down on the block for an easy hoop. That is basket ball 101. Then he got a nice rebound and was surrounded by much smaller players and did not even attempt the 5 foot bunny.

He is a Freshman; but at this level those 2 plays should have been second nature for a big.

  • skitchbeatz

    sloppy play.

  • Dylan Burkhardt

Lazy passes, lazy possessions, and lazy defense. Not much to really get excited about from Michigan.

  • CJD

No Horford; can you spell REDSHIRT! Anyone at the game is he engaged in the huddle?

On the bright side THJ is finding other ways to score and help the team other than the corner 3 ball.

    • wayman britt

We will learn alot if Horford does not see any minutes tonight.

  • billiam

Just from the stuff I’ve read, McLimans doesn’t seem like he’ll be playing much this year.

  • billiam

Dylan, I love you man, but you gotta re-read your last two posts. Quite funny, if you look at ’em with the right perspective.

  • Alex

Morris has six assists in the first half. That’s pretty good so far.

  • Dylan Burkhardt

    This game is… dreadful.

    • sven

It looks like an open gym game with refs.

    • wayman britt

I agree. This game does nothing for either school.

      • Dylan Burkhardt

It does a lot for Concordia, who will get a nice pay day out of it.

  • Mith

Michigan is just goofing off it seems like. Hopefully they’ll turn it on in the 2nd half and win by 25-30.

  • wayman britt

This is a little to close right now.

  • maxwell’s demon

Hey good thing we thought it was a good idea to play CONCORDIA.

  • skitchbeatz

this is troubling. Concordia looks a foot shorter at every position. Hardaway can’t get a shot to go. At what point do you tell him to stop shooting?

    • CJD

Or take your man off the dribble?

  • wayman britt

Well with this game and the last game we are learning we can’t defend the big guy down low. Could spell some trouble in the Big Ten.

  • Alex

Our defense has not been as good tonight as in other recent games.

  • wayman britt

How are we going to defend the big boys when Morgan is in foul trouble or on the bench?

  • STW

What we need in the future is for Horford to make the same transition from year to year 2 that Morgan did. Need 2 big men.

    • wayman britt

I agree. Looks like Horford will redshirt, but unless Blake improves we will probably go more with a small line up this year.

  • Bigfoot

Pretty surprised to see Horford headed for a redshirt. We’re paper thin up front. If Morgan goes down with injury, it’s gonna be trial by Yellowstone forest fire for Jon.

  • Bigfoot

Who is this Rocko Holmes character anyway? And whom is he torching? No BTN for me…

    • Paul

Wow – Rocko is torching his Big 10 opponent. He’s in the wrong league. Maybe he can transfer across town

    • hoopaholic

Big man from Cadillac High School baby! Really good offensive player who knows how to use his size! I don’t know about transferring acrossed town, but he is definitely a smart basketball player who loves the game

  • Bigfoot

Stu up to 51% on 3 pointers for the season. Spectacular

    • Paul

      That’s awesome

      • Bigfoot

and shooting 0% from the stripe. Don’t see that every day

  • CJD

THJ (6-5) – McLimans (6-10) – Smot (6-9) go a combined 0-9 from 3 pt line. That is a lot of size to be allergic to the paint. I did not watch the second half but I am still waiting for the pump fake and drive to the hoop or dish.

    • Paul

Smot needs to camp out down low

      • Flintstone

I agree would love to hardaway and smot pump fake and drive. They have both shown the ability to do it, but they settle for the 3. Blake needs to stop trying to kill the backboard from the 3pt line.

        • Paul

lol – he isn’t firing some bricks

          • Paul

lol – he is firing up some bricks

        • mgocanada

For these reasons and others, I would really like to get that 6’11 guy that Dylan profiled earlier today, even if we need to take him at his word that he can shoot the three. Hate to say it, but McLimans is spastic. Heck, even that highlight from the Harvard game was 99% Stu Douglass’s sweet, heads-up pass and 1% Blake hanging on for dear life.

          • mgocanada

I’d just like to adjust my wording from “spastic” to “uncoordinated” or “awkward” because I now realize that former term is controversial and prone to misinterpretation.

          • CJD

I want a 6-11 guy who can not shoot more than a 10 footer and knows it. Get his fanny in the paint and do the dirty work. One whgo has the ability to kick the ball back out to shooters, turn and shoot or put it on the floor and take his man to the hole.

Not a 6-11 guys who has fallen in love with his 3 point shot.

  • Brian W

Didn’t get to watch the game in person, but at least they got past the trap game. Big Ten Network broadcast mentioned that Stu tied Jimmy King for ninth on the all-time list for 3-pointers list during the game… Nice to watch the good ol’ days of Michigan football and Charles Woodson on the Big Ten Network afterwards. Sigh.

  • Tweeter

Not gonna bother thinking much about this game after this since it was clear the team slept-walked thru it, but the thing that bothers me most about it is clearly the defense. I understand we dont have a lot of size and we dont have a ton of great athletes, so against most capable teams we have to play a bend but dont break strategy. But tonight I dont understand why we didnt even try to pressure them a little. It was pretty disconcerting to see us sit back and allow a bunch of 5’7 dudes to throw the ball all over the court and then toss in some fade-away half-hook shot.

Again, I’m not going to get upset over this game since it was purely a practice, but still. I would like to see the team practicing something they need to get better at.

    • Tweeter

Ah, forgot to add props to those 5’7 dudes from Concordia. They played hard and several of them have some talent. I hope they have a great year in the WHAA or whatever their conference is called.

      • CJD

        NAIA Div II

        • Tweeter

thanks. I know they are NAIA, but i was just mentioning their conference. I think its called the Wolverine-Hoosier athletic conference or something. So maybe WHAC.

  • Smart game to schedule for a team that will have trouble with quick teams. They got practice vs. quick guys who shoot well, learned they can’t let up, hung tough when things didn’t go well, made too many lazy plays, and still won by 21. I’ll take that for a trap game and a young team. Dissapointed that THJ and Smots didn’t get back on track though.

    • CJD

I think coach also mentioned that it may have been part of a deal so Michigan can use their gym during construction.

    • maxwell’s demon

This game shouldn’t have been played. Huron High School could hang with Concordia. All a game like this does is encourage players to rely on athletic ability and not fundamentals to beat a clearly inferior team.

  • Max in Chicago

What I took from this game is the fact that Concordia’s logo is badass. Have you ever seen a more fearsome cardinal?

  • drae

    So is Horford redshirting?

    • CJD

No clue if an announcement was made but he sat the pine all game.

    • Paul

I hope so. He looks lost and we could use his talents for 4 strong years

    • georgeesq.

He can’t redshirt unless he has a season ending injury at this point.

      • CJD

Let the conspiracy begin; team doctors can report anything…..

  • drae

If that is the case (Horford) redshirting I hope 2 things happen.. 1. Mc Limans steps up when called on to spell J-Mo 2. Horford bulks up quite a bit… The talent is there just going to take some time to bring him up to full speed… When is Dumars eligible?

  • Alex

He wasn’t listed on the bench or starting lineup on espn for this game. May not mean anything but you never know.

  • tin mad dog

I think Horford has looked better than Blake, save the Harvard game. Not great, just better than McLimans.

I know this is probably better in the long term but it seems like we’re sacrificing this year. Every year we are so shallow up front. We’re mirroring the Pistons with the amount of 2’s and 3’s we have. I’d like to see us land some talented bigs one of these recruiting classes.
