Post-Visit Q&A: Nick Stauskas

The 6-foot-5 wing guard took an unofficial visit to Michigan this weekend. We posted a couple of notes on Stauskas’ last night, but I was able to get a hold of him today for some more in-depth answers.

What did you do in Ann Arbor? On Sunday, I got to see them practice and on Monday I met back up with them and got a tour of the campus.

What did you think of the campus? It was crazy.  Their facilities there were really nice and they told me that by the time I came their whole basketball facilities would be redone and they’re planning to renovate the arena.

What did you think of practice? In the practice, Beilein seemed really relaxed, and I guess that would be kind of good not to have a hothead for a coach.  For most of the practice they spent a lot of time on fundamentals, like passing, dribbling, shooting and that kind of stuff.  Then they got up and down for a little five-on-five and what I noticed was that they like to shoot 3′s a lot.  About 80 percent of their shots were from 3.

You like that, right?  You’re a shooter. Yeah, that’s why I like it more because I definitely fit into that kind of offense.

What did you think of all the coaches? They were all real nice, they all welcomed me and they just showed me a lot of information so it was all good.

You were impressed with the player development center? They showed us on the computer a 3-D video of what the outside and inside of the facilities should look like and it’s just really nice.

The coaches told you they didn’t want to offer you until they knew you were going to commit right away? Yeah.

You aren’t ready to commit right now? I’m not ready to commit right now after talking with my family and my coaches I still want to wait to see who else comes to me, but my parents and I definitely enjoyed Michigan and I can definitely see myself coming here in a couple years.

Do you plan making an official visit later? Yeah we were talking about it hopefully next spring I could come for an official visit.

A Quick Update on Nick Stauskas

We’ll have a full post-visit debrief interview with Nick Stausaks tomorrow but Joe exchanged a couple texts with the Canadian guard, who just wrapped up a weekend unofficial visit this afternoon, and passed along these nuggets:

  • Stauskas mentioned that the “visit was great and he loved the campus and facilities.” He also added that he could “definitely see himself there in 2 years.”
  • There is no offer on the table at this time but he “knows that he would be a good fit for the program” and mentioned “there’s a possibility that he’ll end up going to Michigan”.
  • Stauskas said the reason that Michigan hasn’t offered is because they were unsure what his timetable was to make a commitment.

Weekend Visitor: Nick Stauskas

41432_623665359_1470_n[1]Nick Stauskas confirmed via text message that he’ll be leaving for Ann Arbor tomorrow morning for an unofficial visit. Stauskas plans to spend the whole weekend in Ann Arbor.

The 2012 wing guard has consistently mentioned that Michigan is his favorite school. Stauskas has yet to receive an official Michigan offer but it isn’t out of the realm of possibility that one could be forthcoming.

Lansing wing Denzel Valentine will also be visiting this week. Valentine is planning to visit Ann Arbor on Tuesday.

Video: JaVontae Hawkins at Great Lakes Summer Championships

JaVontae Hawkins is one of several prospects with a Michigan offer in the class of 2012. Joe made it out to see the 6-foot-4 guard at the Great Lakes Summer Championship in Flint. The quality of play in the two games that this video was cut from wasn’t the best. The tournament was at the end of the first evaluation and I think there is definitely a bit of tired legs. Regardless, it’s a chance to at least get a glimpse of Hawkins’ game.

Nick Stauskas shows off his handle on the AAU circuit

  • The Michigan coaching staff was rolling deep in Merrillville, IN last night. Beilein and two assistants (the most allowed recruiting at once) were out to watch Yogi Ferrell, who was playing with the Indiana Elite 16s. The trio also was in the gym to watch the Eric Gordon All Stars 15U squad that features a trio of 2013 prospects in Zak Irvin, Basil Smotherman, and Devin Davis. You can read Joe Eberhardt’s (Follow him on twitter!) full scouting report here. 2013 Demetrius Jackson also mentioned that Michigan is recruiting him heavily.
  • As we mentioned earlier this week, Michigan paid very close attention to Marcus Paige at the AAU Nationals in Orlando. They had three coaches watched him earlier in the week and still had an assistant coach in the stands on Wednesday. Paige is a top five point guard nationally.
  • TJ Kelley posted a free article on GoBlueWolverine with more notes from Orlando including a cameo appearance by Carlton Brundidge, who played with the Detroit Fire.
  • 2012 guard Michael Frazier reportedly has a Michigan offer. Frazier has been playing very well this July and we are trying to find out where Michigan stands in his recruitment.
  • The REACH Legends faced off with Team Detroit out in California and REACH came away with the victory. Jalen Reynolds had a near triple double with 14 points, 13 rebounds, and 8 blocks.
  • Bacari Alexander wants 1,000 followers before practice starts or he’s going to delete his twitter account. Step up.
  • We’ll have JaVontae Hawkins video later today
  • Thanks to Brian W for posting a number of these notes and links in the comments.
