Saginaw Valley Thoughts

Michigan 81 - Saginaw Valley State 55 (Box score & quotes)

Michigan had a bumpy first half but pulled away from an unspectacular Saginaw Valley State team in the second. I’m just going to go through some quick thoughts on each player. There were two negatives across the board in my opinion: free throws and rebounding. With free throws, 22-37 (59.5%) just won’t get it done, I’m going to say it now and not mention it for every player. Getting out rebounded by Saginaw Valley 39-34 is troubling and this is probably going to be a problem all year. Beyond that I’ll run through player by player with some quick thoughts.

A couple Beilein quotes first - more here from DeShawn, Stu and Dave:

On Stu Douglass’ confidence shooting the ball… “He’ll probably drive me crazy with that confidence. My son drove me crazy, but I have a rule, as long as it goes in I say it’s okay. But we want it to go in.”

On the lineup… “I’ve always been a big guy with making sure that we have people coming off the bench. We’re in some transition now with doing some things with DeShawn (Sims) and Zack (Gibson) that we’re not really sure of a lot of things. So we just said let’s bring some people off the bench, it’s an exhibition game, let’s have the right mixes on the floor and then try to figure out during the game what is going to work best during the real games.”

  • DeShawn Sims: Even though he didn’t get the start, Peedi looked great on the floor. Gibson got into foul trouble and DeShawn actually played a lot of five throughout the game. DeShawn posted 19 points and 9 rebounds in 27 minutes of action. Saginaw wasn’t a huge team so it’s hard to take much from Peedi’s performance but I liked that he only took 2 three point shots and tried to establish the inside game.
  • Stu Douglass: I think we found our starting shooting guard for the time being. Stu looked surprisingly comfortable with the ball in his first college game. Stu shot 3-5 from long range and his range is as advertised — we don’t need to worry about the extended three point line. I was most impressed with Stu’s passing, he led the team with 6 assists. Stu has that shooters mentality though, I swear he took a couple threes when he couldn’t even see the basket. He will be fun to watch if when he gets hot.
  • David Merritt: Merritt is not a flashy player, but he was just solid throughout the night. He hit open threes, made the right pass.  Only 3 assists with 2 turnovers but I felt the most comfortable with him at the point.
  • Zack Gibson: This is what I expect a “good game” for Gibson to look like this year. 3 for 6 shooting (2-3 3pt) for 11 points with 3 rebounds and 2 assists in 19 minutes. The issues with Zack are rebounding and staying away from cheap fouls.
  • Manny Harris: We all know Manny is talented, and he showed it in flashes tonight. I just didn’t feel like Manny was going hard the whole night. He shot just under 50% but there were a lot of “Manny moments” that left me frustrated. I think Manny might have taken the night off a little bit however he definitely turned it up a notch in the second half.
  • Anthony Wright: Wright got the start over DeShawn and I am not quite sure why. He came out firing in the first half but wasn’t hitting. He played a little better in the second half and had some strong rebounds and finally knocked down a three. I think Wright’s role on this team is providing a spark off the bench, not starting.
  • Zack Novak: Zack has dropped some weight but he is still a step slow on the court. He was 2 of 4 (all from long range) but looked a little unsure of himself. He just didn’t have the same confidence with the ball that I saw with Stu. It’s only his first game and his stroke looked pretty good (although a little flat) so I’ll give him time.
  • Kelvin Grady: Troubling game from Kelvin, he only had 2 turnovers but I would swear he had a couple more. They were most forced passes that really never had a chance. I think until Kelvin stops forcing the issue when nothing is there he will find himself behind Dave Merritt. Kelvin also didn’t really look for his shot at all, the only shot he took was a bad hot in transition.
  • CJ Lee: The leader without a role. CJ is not afraid to talk and seems to know the system like the back of his hand. However he appears to be behind Merritt and actually seemed to get most of his 6 minutes at the 2-guard. The issue is that he just isn’t a 2-guard. He can definitely come into the game and give you a burst of energy with his effort.
  • Jevohn Shepherd: Jevohn has found a niche as a four-man on this team, he won’t get major minutes but he gives Beilein an option when he slides DeShawn over to the five and some combination of Wright, Gibson and Sims are in foul trouble. He didn’t look look as uncomfortable as usual but didn’t register a point, steal, rebound, shot or anything else in 9 minutes. He is athletic and strong enough that he can be a duct tape solution for those foul trouble games.
  • Ben Cronin: Huge. Don’t think he looks healthy and wouldn’t be surprised to see him get a medical red shirt this year. Yes he is big but he isn’t going to contribute when he’s hobbling around out there.
  • Eric Puls and Corey Person won’t be factors this year.
  • Laval Lucas-Perry: Throughout the first half all I could think of was what a difference he would make as a third scoring option out of the back court. December 20th can’t come soon enough.

Overall this is a tune up and Michigan used it as one. The defense wasn’t great overall but was improved in the second half. I thought the 1-3-1 looked better than the man to man and if I am not mistaken we played very little 1-3-1 in the first half.   Next week against Michigan Tech should be more of the same even though it’s a real game. The real test will be Northeastern on Wednesday.

One other note: Daniel Horton, Brent Petway, and Chris Hunter were all in the house. The Beilein Bunch didn’t show up.

The second season of the Beilein era tips off (exhibition style) tonight. The most painful thing we have learned this off season (not Ekpe’s transfer, Lubick’s surprise commitment to Georgetown, or anything else) is that there is not a lot of info coming out of Camp Beilein. In the Amaker era there were open gym reports constantly, at the very least these gave us something to talk about all summer. Although, after hearing how well Courtney played in open gym year after year maybe it’s better to not build up expectations. The bottom line is no one really knows how much this team improved. We will finally start to understand the situation and be able to discuss the team beyond blind speculation after tonight.

There is a long interview with Beilein on MGoBlue.com but the embed code just won’t work. It’s on the right side of this page under Multimedia. The starting lineup is still up in the air but here are my predictions for tomorrow:

  • PG: David Merritt
  • SG: Stu Douglass
  • WF: Manny Harris
  • PF: DeShawn Sims
  • C: Zack Gibson

The two guys I almost threw in there are Zack Novak and Anthony Wright. These are just hunches though so let’s hear your predictions too.

There are some pretty good quotes from CJ Lee’s latest blog on MGoBlue:

“We want to come into this game like we do every other game and that’s with a strong mindset that we are going to make a statement” added Kelvin Grady. “We’re going to let people know, and let ourselves know, that we can play with anyone in the country. We can play hard, we can play smart and we can play together and overall we are going to have fun.”

I don’t think Michigan is going to prove that they can play with anyone in the country tomorrow but there are still some things to look for. Here is a quick list:

  • The freshman: This is Cronin’s test run, the staff has to make a decision regarding a red shirt so his play will be important. If he looks outmatched by a smaller Saginaw team, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him red shirt. There is a place for at least one of Stu Douglass and Zack Novak to get big minutes, and probably start. How does Stu look? Is he more than a shooter? Does Zack looked slimmed down? Is he playing at the two or the three? The freshman are going to be the most intriguing cog to watch early in the season because they are going to have their numbers called a lot in my opinion.
  • Point guard: Who is getting a majority of the minutes? Merritt, Kelvin, and CJ will all probably play some point guard and shooting guard. Who looks the most comfortable running the team? Who holds onto the ball?
  • Saginaw’s inexperience: Looking at Saginaw’s roster it appears they only return 2 full time starters from last year, both senior guards. Their roster also includes 8 freshman. This is a 12-14 GLIAC team, not like the Grand Valley team that beat MSU en route to a 36-1 season last year.
  • The 1-3-1 Zone: Without Ekpe I expect the 1-3-1 to be featured much more than last year when it was basically scrapped half way through the season because we couldn’t stop anyone with it.
  • DeShawn Sims: Does he play inside or out? DeShawn should be able to get any shot whenever he wants against a team like Saginaw, however it will be obvious whether he makes an effort to take his game to the post.

I’m not worried about the final score but I expect a result similar to last years Ferris State game (a 78-40 win). Remember last year Michigan coasted past Ferris State, Radford, and Brown before being sent hurtling back to reality against Georgetown. This year the first real test with be Northeastern in my opinion, clearly an easier game than Georgetown, and a game we should be favored in but still a tough game against a quality team.

We will also get our first glimpse of whether any of the student ticket policies are working. Any student gets in free with an M-Card, and students who bought tickets better be there if they want their giftcards and clothes.

Other Pre-Game Links:

One thing I want to see increase on this blog is comments during games, last year there wasn’t a lot of discussion during the game. So if you are on your computer watching the game come here and leave your thoughts. I’m also planning to do a “live blog” for a couple big road games.

Monday 10-13-08 Notes and Links

Russell Byrd enjoys UK visit, but . . .
Kentucky fans might be too crazy for him. I love this quote:

His son was “absolutely amazed” by Madness and almost apologetic after the public pickup games on Saturday. A fan yelled at him for not wearing blue. Byrd played in a yellow t-shirt and black shorts.

“He felt bad,” Kelly Byrd said. “He almost felt like it was disrespectful. (Russell Byrd said) ‘Dad, I didn’t know. I grabbed the first thing out of the drawer.’ ”

Tipton reports that Byrd will visit Michigan State this weekend for their Midnight Madness. Big time big man prospect Daniel Orton committed to U-K this week amidst all the fan fare. I still think MSU is the choice for Byrd but we will see. It doesn’t sound like there is a firm time frame yet for a decision/announcement.

Luckily, this is a different Russell Byrd (I got about 20 Google News alerts about this story this weekend).

Blue Rage Tickets: $199

The Blue Rage is recruiting more members once again. Get SEASON tickets for $199 in the BLEACHERS for the upcoming 2008-2009 campaign. Overflow seating will be in the blue section with the band, behind the basket. The Maize Rage and the Blue Rage are trying very hard to make sure the lower bowl is packed with maize-clad fans for each home game.

Don’t think this is a good sign on student ticket numbers if the Blue Rage has been extended to a full year plan IN THE BLEACHERS. Great deal for alumni though who want to cheer. There are also plenty of other ticket packs on sale. NYC Alumni: Don’t forget about Coaches Vs Cancer tickets.

Patrick Beverley to Europe?

I don’t feel sorry for Mr. Beverley one bit. I still am shocked at the transformation from “virtual commitment” who was cheering Hail to the Victors at the U-M/ND hoops game and telling anyone who would listen how excited he was to come to Ann Arbor. To a kid who didn’t even call U-M to tell them he was headed to Arkansas.

Court Vision with C.J. Lee: A Whirlwind of a Week

Homecoming, practice, Jay-Z, pre-season, and more.

This past Saturday marked the second weekend in a row I have met a celebrity. What can I say; this is a good time for me. Last weekend I had the opportunity to meet Isaiah Thomas but this weekend, I met Jay-Z at his concert in Detroit. He gave a free concert in order to encourage voting registration here in Michigan. My teammates Dave (Merritt), Jevohn (Shepherd) and I were able to meet him. Anybody that knows me knows that I have a passion for music. I can honestly say that I was speechless when my teammates and I met Jay-Z before the Operation Registration Concert. I had so much to say to him but when I was introduced to him, I could barely remember my name. The concert was great but I was physically tired afterwards because I wanted to rap every lyric with him. It is not everyday you get to meet one of the greatest musicians ever!

Nate Lubick to Georgetown…

No way to spin it, bad news. I guess his recent visit didn’t go so great after all. This is certainly a buzz kill after the momentum from landing Vogrich. Angus Brandt becomes a huge priority now because the potential depth in the post down the road just got even worse.

More on Lubick tomorrow.

Monday Notes: Recruiting, Amaker, More

Recruiting Weekend
Trey Zeigler didn’t make it in this weekend because he was in Mount Pleasant to support his dad’s big hoops recruiting weekend. This is understandable but it would have been great to have him in town for Saturday’s game. Lubick, Carroll, and Brandan Kearney were here and I find it hard to believe that they wouldn’t have enjoyed themselves on the sidelines. The atmosphere in Michigan Stadium was electric in the 4th quarter. There were plenty of big names and alumni there: Isiah Thomas was there, Michael Phelps was there (wonder who set up this MJ meet?), and a commenter notes that Daniel Horton and Chris Hunter were also there.

Amaker’s Move Creates a Clash of Harvard Ideals
The New York Times has been all over Tommy at Harvard for a while since the articles came out this summer that focused on “lowering” qualifications (they remained at Ivy League approved levels) at Harvard to get in a couple recruits. My feeling on this is that Harvard hired Tommy to take their basketball program out of the Ivy League basement and there are going to be some growing pains. The bottom line is that better players are coming in and these kids got cut.

Do I feel sorry for them? Of course, being cut sucks but it happens. I don’t think they are getting kicked out of school though and they are still at Harvard.

Is Tommy desperate? Probably. He needs to win and win now and you don’t get too many chances in the coaching game.

Court Vision with C.J. Lee: Our Success is On Us
CJ talks conditioning, ownership of the program, Isiah, and Bill Martin. I really like what the AD is doing with CJ’s blog and I think they picked the perfect guy to do it. Not sure how I feel about them using the phrase MGoBlog when linking to the archives though.

Football Friday: Wisconsin & Hoops Visits

I am more excited and hopefully about the basketball visitors this weekend than the game itself. So much so that I’m going to talk about the visitors more than the football game. First lets take a look at who is due in town and what we know:

  • Nate Lubick (PF - 2010)  - Big time power forward prospect has been to Ann Arbor several times and appears to be favoring the Maize and Blue.
  • Austin Carroll (SG - 2010) - Lubick’s teammate appears to be becoming a more serious target and will move to the class of ‘10.
  • Jordan Morgan (PF - 2009) - U-D big man and Michigan commit Jordan Morgan will be on hand selling Michigan to the other visitors.
  • Trey Ziegler (PG/SG/SF - 2010) - Dynamic 2010 guard is regarded in many circles as the best player in Michigan regardless of class. Already his second Michigan football visit this fall. Michigan, UCLA, CMUand Michigan State appear to be the main teams involved.
  • Brandan Kearney (PG - 2011) - Big 2011 point guard has been interested in Michigan for a while. Connection to the Edwards family. Tennessee, Kentucky, MSU, Syracuse, and Ohio State are all involved in his recruitment.
  • Other young visitors like Christian Vaughn, and Percy Gibson are also going to be on campus in what should be a huge recruiting weekend for Michigan.
  • I don’t think Lubick will drop this weekend but it’s still a huge weekend getting arguably the top three targets on the recruiting board on campus together. Maybe the dominos start falling but predicting that might be getting a little ahead of ourselves. Hopefully the atmosphere is great though, Big Ten opener, Michael Phelps, and maybe a win??
Now for some football links:
The Wolverines are huge underdogs at home against Wisconsin obviously but I think that the offense looked miles better against Notre Dame than the rest of the season. The defense… not so much. Hopefully the team can win one for the hoops squad but I’m going to have to go with Wisconsin 24 - Michigan 13. My player of the game: Travis Beckum. Let’s hear your predictions and thoughts about the hoops visitors.
