Who is Laval Lucas-Perry?

Laval Lucas-PerryFor a guy that hasn’t even played a game in Ann Arbor, Laval Lucas-Perry is getting plenty of buzz. Tim McCormick predicted that Laval will be the best point guard at Michigan since Rumeal Robinson. Dick Vitale has called him one of the top 5 impact transfers in the country. Jeff Goodman calls him the #4 mid season addition (Michigan will face #1 (Legion) and #2 (Stanley Robinson, UConn) on the list). It’s almost impossible to watch a Michigan broadcast without hearing his name. But the questions remain… Who is Laval Lucas-Perry? Where did he come from? How good is he?

Most people who don’t consider themselves basketball recruitniks probably don’t know much about Laval Lucas-Perry other than the fact that he’s been sitting at the end of the bench for a bout a year now and has pretty good taste in suits.

This post will act as a primer for those fans who need to catch up on Laval before his Michigan debut this Saturday.

The Recruit

Laval floated off the radar a bit at Flint Powers Catholic high school, overshadowed by a star studded in-state class that included Manny Harris, Kalin Lucas, Durrell Summers, Dar Tucker, Alex Legion among others. Laval finished his high school career as a 3 star recruit (#138 overall) and rated as the #6 prospect in the state of Michigan.

Laval committed to Arizona over Boston College, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, and Wisconsin. His recruitment essentially came down to Arizona, Michigan, and Michigan State. Michigan appeared to have as good of a shot as anyone else until Alex Legion recommitted the day before Laval Lucas-Perry’s announcement. When Legion filled the last remaining scholarship in the class of 2007 it was pretty clear that Laval would be looking elsewhere. Michigan State also appeared to be eliminated when their 2007 class already included three guards as well, Kalin Lucas, Durrell Summers, and Chris Allen.

We don’t know if Laval would have gone to Michigan if Legion hadn’t recommitted but looking back it would have been much nicer to have Laval than Alex’s “commitment”. In the end Laval committed to Arizona because of his familiarity with the program (he camped there that summer and received an offer) and  most of all his respect for Lute Olson.

The Wildcat

Laval Lucas-Perry

Laval arrived in Tuscon alongside NBA point guard Jerryd Bayless, a phenom who averaged 20 points per game in his only college season. It is often mentioned that Laval was one of the hardest players to guard in Arizona practices, this is saying a lot because there was a lot of talent in Tuscon last year even if the team underachieved as a whole.

Laval played only 5 games in a Wildcat uniform before deciding he intended to transfer. The main reason for the transfer appeared to be the uncertainty of the coaching situation and the fact that Lute Olson didn’t coach the entire year. It’s hard to really take much from Laval’s stats last year considering that he never really got a chance for major playing time. In only 10 minutes per game Laval averaged 4 points, 1.6 boards, and 0.8 assists.

The Transfer

LLP didn’t have a lot of time to make his decision after deciding to leave Arizona because it was critical that he got enrolled in school before the Winter semester. The re-recruitment moved fast and it was clear that Beilein wanted LLP and LLP wanted Michigan. Laval and his family considered a couple trips including one to Wake Forest but decided to end his recruitment and stay close to home at Michigan.

“It wasn’t anything in particular about Arizona,” Lucas-Perry said. “It was just me not feeling comfortable there. I was just trying to find somewhere comfortable, where I can be myself.”

Laval and his family filed an appeal to the NCAA to regain his freshman eligibility (due to the coaching situation at Arizona) after only playing 5 games and it was granted. This makes LLP a redshirt freshman this year rather than a sophomore and means that he loses only a half year of eligibility rather than 1.5 years.

The Traveler

This summer Laval traveled to Taiwan to play with the Athletes in Action team in the Jones Cup. Playing in Taiwan was an opportunity for Laval to get some game action after sitting the second half of the 2008 season. The Athletes in Action/USA team took second in the tournament and Laval’s play was solid throughout. Laval’s averages were around  9.8 ppg (high of 22) on 40% (26% 3pt) shooting with 3.3 rebounds, .67 assists, 1.2 steals, and 1.4 turnovers. He didn’t set the world on fire but for playing with a thrown together squad on the other side of the globe in Taiwan it’s not bad.

For plenty of video from the tournament go here (LLP is #7 on the AIA team).

The Wolverine

Laval Lucas-Perry Michigan

So how does Laval fit into this team? I think he gets his minutes at a combination of the 1 and 2 spots. This means he takes some combination of minutes from David Merritt, Kelvin Grady, Stuart Douglass, and Zack Novak.

Because he can play both the 1 and the 2 (which aren’t all that different in Beilein’s system offensively) I think he can play with any of those 4 guys on the court next to him. If he plays with one of the current point guards he’ll play up top in the 1-3-1, if he plays with one of the freshman he’ll run the baseline. I expect to see plenty of tinkering by Beilein over the next few weeks in an attempt to figure out where everyone is most comfortable offensively and defensively.

I don’t think it’ll be a situation where he takes all of Merritt’s minutes or anything like that, especially early on. I would expect Merritt to still get a few minutes every game. I also have seen a lot of people projecting that he will take CJ Lee’s minutes, I don’t see this right now because right now CJ backs up Manny almost exclusively. I don’t think Novak is ready to play the three and I would expect to see CJ still get those 5 minutes or so per game at the three.

Eventually I think Laval can be a double digit scorer and give Michigan that scoring threat at the guard position they are lacking. We have seen what the emergence of DeShawn Sims as a consistent threat down low has done to open up the offense and Laval is just going to open it up even more. He will be one of the only guys on the team comfortable driving in the lane and taking it to the hole but who can also stick the perimeter jumper.

From what I have heard about Laval’s game, it breaks down something like this:

  • More of a combo guard or shooting guard but with the size of a point guard.
  • Solid athlete and very strong which should allow him to be a very good rebounder for a guard. He is probably a little under his listed 6-3 height.
  • Very good shooter from mid-range and should also be solid from three point range.
  • Able to get in the lane to enable the mid range game.
  • Average passer and still learning the system.

There will undoubtedly be some small issues and adjustments that have to be made by adding a player to the rotation in the middle of the season but I think it will mostly be a non-factor. Laval has been practicing with the team since last winter so it’s not like he just showed up in Ann Arbor.

I think Beilein will work him a long slowly and build his minutes up. I don’t think he will start right away and hopefully games against Oakland, Florida Gulf Coast, and North Carolina Central will act as good warmups. The question of whether he starts is one we can ask on New Years Eve.

While I’m not ready to proclaim him the greatest point guard since Rumeal Robinson, Daniel Horton, and maybe even a point guard at all. I am definitely excited about adding Laval Lucas-Perry to a team that has already exceeded expectations over the first month and a half.

We’ll find out a lot more Saturday afternoon. Get tickets!

A couple random notes from Mark Snyder:

  • John Beilein is starting to feel better, this from SID Tom Wywrot: “Coach Beilein is feeling better and progressing well to regain his strength as U-M physicians continue to monitor his status on a day-to-day basis.”
  • The agenda for the regents meeting Thursday night has been released and there is no formal proposal for a practice facility. According to Snyder’s sources “it still remains a viable plan, and active meetings with coaches and others affiliated with the project are continuing.”

Recruiting Rankings. Rivals put out their list of 2009 team recruiting rankings by conference. Michigan finished a respectable fourth in the Big Ten behind Indiana, Illinois, and Minnesota. Darius Morris was also named the top dog at the point guard position. Looking ahead to next year has to have a Michigan fan excited as long as Manny stays. You take away CJ, Dave, and Jevohn and add a freshman class of Darius Morris, Matt Vogrich, Blake McLimans, and Jordan Morgan to what is mostly the same core.

DaShonte Riley. I have received a lot of emails about DaShonte Riley choosing not to sign with Georgetown and whether or not he is an option for Michigan. I don’t see any way that Michigan goes after Riley because nothing about it makes sense. Michigan is out of scholarships for 2009 and Riley isn’t a great fit anyways. Riley was considered a can’t miss prospect a couple years ago but his stock has dropped steadily from a 5 star to a 3 star recruit. Michigan will move a long and keep looking to the class of 2010.

Top 25? I also got a couple questions about whether Michigan could make it into the top 25. The polls are out and Michigan is #32 in the AP and #45 in the coaches poll. One win against UCLA doesn’t warrant a move into the top 25 at this point in my book. Polls in college basketball are relatively meaningless compared to football so I think this is the least of Michigan’s concerns. The most important take away from the UCLA game is that it will be a resume booster if Michigan finds itself on the bubble.

Tickets. There is a graphic on MGoBlue that says the Duke game is sold out but it looks like you can still buy singles. If you are planning to get to that game I would buy my tickets sooner than later. Another reminder about tickets, tomorrow’s game is $1 if you bring two canned goods for the Food Gatherers. This is a great deal and hopefully people make it out despite the 8:30 tip.

Laval Lucas-Perry. It seems like no Michigan basketball broadcast is complete with out a mention of LLP. Dickie V spoke very highly of him and I haven’t heard anyone who doesn’t expect him to be a contributor. The questions I have are where he fits, does he play the point guard or the two guard. Reports have him as more of an undersized two who could play some one. I just worry about putting all these expectations on a guy who is coming into the middle of the season cold and hasn’t played college hoops since last Fall.  There are still lots of questions with how LLP changes the rotation as well. Beilein has talked about playing less people and I think Novak might be the odd man out right now.

Position By Position: Point Guard

There are plenty of options at the point guard this year but probably no real playmakers. The point guards on the roster (alphabetical):

  • Kelvin Grady - 5′11″ Soph.
  • Laval Lucas-Perry - 6′3″ RS Fr. (combo guard, eligible at midseason)
  • CJ Lee - 6′0″ 5th Yr Sr
  • Dave Merritt - 5′10″ 5th Yr Sr

It’s hard to pick a starter at this point, Kelvin and CJ both got  substantial playing time throughout last year, both starting for stretches. Merritt came on strong at the end of the year (who could forget his effort in last year’s Ohio State game). Here is a side by side comparison of Kelvin, CJ, and Merritt’s stats from last year. Kelvin started 25 games to CJ’s 7.  Here are the quick hitters from their stats last year:

Name MPG PPG FG% 3FG% A TO A:TO
Kelvin 24.4 5.6 40.3 35.93 2.8 1.3 2.15
CJ 11.4 2.1 33.3 28.03 1.3 .6 2.17
Merritt 10.7 1.6 38.5 50 .9 .6 1.5

For right now I’m going to focus on the bulk of the non-conference season before Laval Lucas-Perry is eligible. At this point I have trouble handicapping the race at starting point guard. I wouldn’t be shocked if any one of CJ, Kelvin, or Dave trotted out next Thursday as the starting point guard. This might sound like crazy talk to some people who just expect Kelvin to be the guy but I don’t expect Kelvin to be the starter early on.

Kelvin GradyThe popular choice to start at point guard from the fans perspective is Kelvin Grady, he is the scholarship point guard and everyone expects him to be the answer. Thus far he just hasn’t shown that he can separate himself from the pack and be the guy. Kelvin Grady clearly has the most potential and best athleticism of the bunch, he even has the best shooting numbers and a comparable assist to turnover ratio to CJ Lee. The fact remains that all through last year he just couldn’t eliminate the poor mistakes. Whether it be forcing passes, shots, or just dumb turnovers, Beilein isn’t going to accept that at the point guard spot on this team.

CJ Lee appears to be the leader of the group, someone who isn’t afraid to talk on the court and help out his teammates. CJ plays smart and takes relatively good care of the ball but he just isn’t a threat to score like Kelvin is. CJ shot only 33% from the field to Kelvin’s 40%. Kelvin was by no means a consistent player but when he was on he could hit the three and score the ball better than CJ. Throughout most of last year CJ’s jump shot was not a thing of beauty.

Dave Merritt is a guy who doesn’t have any glaring weaknesses or glowing strengths. I think CJ is a better defender than Merritt while Kelvin is better at scoring the ball but Dave is just the safe play out of the group. Merritt isn’t going to force passes or shots, but he isn’t going to make any plays on his own either. I worry about Merritt against tight ball pressure but he didn’t have that high of turnover numbers so maybe this is just in my imagination.

Beilein is in a jam because Kelvin is the younger guy with the most potential and 2 more years ahead of him. But with the arrival of Darius Morris next year you have to to wonder if Kelvin will ever be the starting point guard for this team. If Kelvin can’t beat out CJ and Dave this then you have to think that Darius Morris would be the starting point guard for this team next year (he might be anyways).

Because of Kelvin’s higher ceiling (athletically and offensively) it is critical for this team for Kelvin can elevate his game and take it to the next level. Beilein has said that he only wants to go eight or nine men deep and if he does it appears someone at the point guard spot is going to be left behind.

I think that CJ Lee is your early season starter but the minutes will break down pretty evenly (with some coming at the two). Beilein will probably use CJ, Dave, and Kelvin situationally. CJ is the better defender, Kelvin the better shooter, and Merritt is the most transparent.

I frown about putting two 6 foot and under guys on the court at the same time but with Manny’s move to the wing, lack of depth at the two-guard, and Laval sitting out until December 20th I’d assume it will have to happen in the non-conference season. None of the three are good enough scorers to be a traditional two-guard but both guard spots play similar roles in Beilein’s offense.

I’ll look more at the two guard in my next position breakdown and more about Laval Lucas-Perry’s addition to the roster in December.

Lucas-Perry and Athletes in Action Fall Short of Jones Cup Title

The USA Athletes in Action team was defeated by Jordan 93-91 (OT) in the Jones Cup final on Friday. Jordan gave Athletes in Action both of their losses in the tournament and won their second straight Cup. I think it might be safe to say Jordan has a Jones Cup dynasty brewing.  Chris Wang from Tawain Hoops has posted lots of Jones Cup video and continues to post more here (LLP is #7 on AIA).

It is really hard to determine what all these games really mean. The positives for Laval are that he gets to travel the world and play competitive basketball for the first time since December of last year. For comparison Zack Gibson averaged 6 points and 4 rebounds in last years Jones Cup including a 12 point/9 rebound game against Kazakhstan. Lucas-Perry averaged around 10 points per game but had a 22 point outburst against Taiwan.

Here are Lucas-Perry’s final combined stats through the first 8 games. He averaged 9.78 ppg on 40% (26% 3pt) shooting with 3.33 rebounds, .67 assists, 1.22 steals, and 1.44 turnover.. The obvious issues are the assists, shooting percentages and turn over numbers but given the circumstances of the tournament and the fact that the AIA team was basically just thrown together some of this can be expected.

Overall, this trip was a good way for Laval to knock some rust off. I really don’t think this trip can tell us whether LLP has what it takes to be that consistent third scorer that we need him to be or not. At the very least it gives us a shot to see him on some video and look at some numbers.

Other Notes: Darius Morris is playing in the Reebok Championships next week in Las Vegas. Add Florida Gulf Coast to this years schedule. Reed Baker returns to Crisler Arena! 7 footer transfers to OSU from UAB.

Add UMass to the Schedule, Recruiting, LLP

UMass is apparently playing in Michigan’s bracket in the Coaches vs Cancer opening rounds according to this message board post (I can’t get the article link to work). This is another tough match up on what was supposed to be a watered down schedule this year. UMass is a game that is winable though and will be a good early test for this team. Check out the other notes I have assembled on next years schedule. One other note (sorry for adding this late) there is also a rumor circulating about a home and home series (possibly 4 years) with UConn but this hasn’t been confirmed anywhere and may be for this year or later on (Thanks Joe).

Some information is out there from national events this week about Carl Jones, Michigan’s #2 point guard target at this time. First from the RivalsHoops (free):

Despite a hamstring injury Rivals.com top 150 prospect Carl Jones was in the building supporting his Ohio Basketball Club teammates. Jones says he has offers from Iowa, Penn State, Texas Tech, St. Joe’s, and Marquette. He also mentioned that Michigan is still showing a lot of interest despite not offering.

ESPN had this scouting report on Carl Jones at the LeBron Skills Academy:

Jones has the ability to score in a variety of ways. He can connect with relative ease from beyond 3-point land, but he also has the quickness to penetrate to the basket. Though small, he uses an assortment of floaters and angles to get his shots off in the paint amongst the trees.

Rivals also mentions that Justin Jordan, another 2009 point guard also mentions Michigan as well as Texas Tech,  Purdue, Butler, LSU, and Virginia.

If you have premium on Rivals they have both posted tons of team/elite camp video over the past week: Novak, Lubick, Morgan, and Elite Camp. 2010 point guard Ray McCallum Jr. will attend Detroit Country Day next year. Vince at PrepSpotlight has a great report ($) on Manny and DeShawn at the LeBron Academy where they were counselors and also got to play with LeBron and Chris Paul. Not a lot of mention of Darius this week who was apparently slowed with a back injury for most of the week. One more note, Givon Crump is blowing up at RBK U and he is certainly a wing target to watch (again sorry for adding this late).

From the Jones Cup, Laval Lucas-Perry scored 14 points and notched 2 steals in Day 2 action during an easy win over Qatar. It also looks like Laval had 9 vs Jordan in an opening day loss (Taiwain Hoops).

Laval Lucas-Perry had a fastbreak dunk, a three and a three-point play in the second quarter as AIA led by as many as 14 points.

Manny Harris and Laval Lucas-Perry To Play in Jones Cup

It has been reported that both Manny Harris and Laval Lucas-Perry have been selected to play on the U.S. Jones Cup Team sponsored by Athletes in Action. The team will play in Tita, Taiwan from July 7th through 20th. Taiwain Hoops mentions that Manny Harris was not on the U.S roster that they received but he is on the roster that UMKC lists. Should be a great chance for both Manny and Laval to get some game action in (Laval hasn’t had any for a very long time) and also work on their game while getting a trip overseas. West Virginia’s Da’Sean Butler is another notable on the team, here is the full roster:

Da’Sean Butler 1988.1.25  201/102  West Virginia  12.9p+6.2rb
Jamel McLean 1988.4.18  205/107  Xavier  (redshirt, Tulsa transfer)
Marcus Kitts 1989.1.31  206/95  William & Mary  2.4p
Laval Lucas-Perry 1989.3.15  186/88  Michigan  4p

Some more catching up here:

  • Great article on Manny Harris in the Free Press. It’s really becoming hard not to root for this kid in every way. He stuck with us and continues to stick with us and its scary to think where we would be without him. Although the Daily says that Manny needs to heed his own advice (I thought he played a very in control game at OSU when his shot wasn’t falling).
  • For all you Kelvin Grady fans here is an article from the Daily about him regaining his starting spot.
  • Next years (hopefully) projected savior Laval Lucas-Perry got some positive ink in the Daily as well.
  • Also our friends at Spartan Weblog have a good take on the Illinois/IU Game last night. Make a free throw Pruitt! That one was a debacle in a lot of ways but it certainly was entertaining.

LLP to Michigan; K’Len Morris to leave the program

Laval Lucas-Perry is officially a Wolverine. This is a great get for Beilein, Perry is a combo gurad who will help shore up the back court depth. It may even allow Manny to slide out to the three next year. The reports on LLP are somewhat mixed but from what I gather he is definetely tough and is a good penetrator. UM has been so dry of played with ability to get in the lane that this is a big positive. His shooting seems to get mixed reviews, but I am sure Beilein will improve on that. The word is also that LLP has grown a little bit too which is definetly a good thing. This is a gift that fell into Michigan’s lap and Beilein did a good job to secure it.

K’Len Morris has decided to leave the program. I heard whispers about this last week and tried to hint at it last night but K’Len is going his own way. I am sure K’Len didn’t like the losing but I think this transfer boils down to two main reasons. First, not feeling like he was getting a good enough chance to shine and feeling like he is better than he was playing or better than the amount of playing time he was getting. Second, the official stated reason for his transfer, his family got relocated to Tennessee and K’Len wants to be close to his family. Best of luck to K’Len wherever he ends up.

Finally, the rumors about Manny continue to swirl. I still say BS. Manny will play his entire career at the University of Michigan. If he wanted to go to Tennessee he would have done it when he had the chance to (without sitting out a year) last spring.  Will have a UCLA game preview tommorrow or Friday.
