Cassity is off the board, that leaves one more target for 2008. We’ll see how the Justin Watts recruitment plays out then it is on to 2009.

The rumors on the SalukiTalk Message boards say that Cassity is visiting SIU right now but St. Louis may be the favorite. MSNSaluki says:
Actually, Cassity is on campus today with his parents (Mary and Joseph?). He will attend practice and go out to dinner with Lowrey and some of the players. SIU likes its chances but I’m still hearing he’s SLU bound.
Got to love the rumor mill. Then again not much else we can talk about now that we are sitting at home for another March.
- It all falls into line for Mater Dei in Division II boys’ final
Andy Brown scored 13 of his 18 points to lead Mater Dei to a state title win. - Academics and Athletics
The long awaited Ann Arbor news piece on academic issues in the athletic department. Does it live up to the hype? I’ll have more reaction later. - Boys basketball: With his college destination in doubt, Novak came out swinging
Novak speaks on his recruitment and almost being left with no offer. - Cassity mulls Michigan offer (Scout Premium)
Will Michigan add another guard/wing? - Big Ten teams seemed to get pretty snubbed with respect to seeding tonight. Wisconsin a 3, MSU a 5, Purdue a 6 and Indiana an 8? Maybe it’s just my BigTen bias.
Zack Novak committed to Michigan according to Rivals and Scout. For more info on Novak check here for old reports. Also I did not see Justin Watts at the game and don’t think he was there but I am not 100% sure. Jordan Morgan was definetely in the house though.
Zack Novak video (#32 red): Sectionals (vs Merrillville), and vs Crown Point.
The latest on Kyle Cassity from IllinoisHSBasketball.com:
“I’m going up on an official visit to Michigan and coming back on Tuesday,” Cassity said. “I had a good time (at the state tournament). It didn’t come out the way we wanted it too, but it was certainly a time I will always remember,” he added.
According to Cassity, Michigan has not extended a scholarship offer yet, but some experts are speculating that Michigan has not been candid about their plan to offer the 6-5 wing on the visit. “There is no scholarship offer yet,” affirmed Cassity. “I’m excited to get up and check stuff out. They are in the Big Ten, the coach seems like a nice guy, and distance isn’t real bad.”
- Kyle Cassity made Illinois class 2a all-state first team and reportedly received a Michigan offer Wednesday and possible even verballed?. It sounds now like Kyle has NOT verballed to Michigan but he does have an offer. More tomorrow.
- Ben Cronin’s team fell in the state regional finals to Bishop Maginn. Cronin had a game high 17 points in the loss (box score).
- Stuart Douglass and Carmel lost in the regional finals 63-59 to Brownsburg. Stu had a rough shooting day going 6-20 for 16 points (box score/recap). It looks like it was a tough shooting night overall for Carmel and Brownsburg pulled off two upsets in one day.
- Terrelle Pryor likes to fight.
- Carmel knocked off Franklin Central 54-43 in the regional semifinals this afternoon. They will face Brownsburg at 8 pm tonight. Here are a few message board reports, and here is the Indy Star’s game write up. Stu was only 4-20 but led Carmel with 16 points.
- Kyle Cassity scored 16 points in Pinckneyville’s state semifinal 47-44 loss to North Lawndale. Here’s a good message board report on Cassity’s game. Cassity will probably make his way up for a visit now that his season is over.
- Justin Watts is expected on campus ($) and Zack Novak was on campus Thursday night (not sure if he still is here).
- Tomorrow’s game against Purdue can be streamed online through CSTV if you can’t get to a TV.
- 2009 guard Diamond Taylor is off board, he committed to Wisconsin.
- Wolverine women lost to Iowa in the second round of the BigTen Tournament but could get an NIT bid.
I managed to catch up with 2008 commitment Stuart Douglass for an interview recently. For those that don’t know, Douglass is a 6-3 shooting guard from Carmel, Indiana who played his way to an eventual offer at Michigan’s team camp last summer. Douglass is averaging 15.3 ppg and has made 79 of 208 (38%) three pointers on the season for state ranked Carmel High. Carmel has a regional semi-final game (and potentially a regional final game) on Saturday at 12pm (finals at 8pm) in Southport. Thanks a lot to Stu for taking the time during his season to do the interview.
How is your season going? It looks like you guys have a legit shot to win the state championship.
Our season is going great so far. We finished 18-2 and we were undefeated through 16 games. We just won the sectional championship last night against a county rival by 14. Next weekend is regionals and we’re feeling confident about our chances of going all the way to the championship. If we keep playing defense the way we did when we were undefeated we should have a very good chance.
How would you describe your game? Most people talk about your shooting, what other strengths and weaknesses do you have?
Shooting is what I get noticed for most but I think I have a pretty high basketball IQ. I usually know when I should shoot or drive or pass off to an open teammate. I’m working a lot harder on rebounding and on pressuring the ball, a few things I haven’t done so well the last couple years. This year I’ve been put on the other teams point guard more than I ever have and I’ve been given more defensive responsibility and I love it. I have taken an approach to defense now like I always have to shooting about challenging myself to get better and it becomes a lot more fun that way. It’s something I’m taking pride in now, which was not like me even last year.
- 6-11 power forward Mason Plumlee verballed to Duke. This one was showing signs of being over once he raved about his visit to Duke. Plumlee also scored a team high 15 points in the North Carolina 3-A State championship win for the Greenies.
- Nice piece on Zack Novak and his father’s battle with cancer. Novak led Chesterton with 23 points and 9 boards in a win over Crown Point to wrap up their first ever outright conference title.
Kyle Cassity put up a solid double double with 15 points and 16 boards in a win over Harrisburg to advance to Friday’s sectional final. St. Louis headman Rick Majerus was in the house watching Kyle play.- Corey Person and K-Zoo Central have advanced to Friday’s district final as well, Person scored 9 points in the easy victory over Portage Northern.
- David Curletti, another potential walk on, scored 26 points in Orchard Lake St. Mary’s win over Birmingham Groves. Dion Sims was reportedly a non-factor and John Beilein was in the house. OLSM also rolled over PSL-champ Northwestern in the opening rounds of distrcits (Sims 30pts, Curletti 18)
- The talk down in Bloomington is that Tony Bennett might be the guy, although Washington State fans say no chance. Could Klay Thompson end up back on the board? Thompson recently scored a career high 40 points (5 3pfg) and had 8 assists. The reports were glowing about Klay at open-gym on his visit and he sounds like a guy that could come in and play from day 1.
- Donald Stewart is reportedly receiving Michigan interest. This is the first I have heard of Stewart who is averaging 16.3 points, 6 rebounds, 2.5 steals, and 2.4 assists.
Jordan Morgan and U-D Jesuit got blown out by Detroit Pershing and 2010 standout Keith Appling. Rumor has it that it will be tough for Michigan to get a sniff of Appling and this is pretty believable. A.W. Canada has not been around Crisler this year, let the PSL recruiting debate rage on. Ekpe and Manny were in the house as well.- Mater Dei junior forward Andy Brown had 25 points and 8 boards in a 70-61 win. Brown is definetely one to watch in the class of 2009.
CSTV has an article on the top remaining wing/shooting guard prospects on the board (they posted a similar one for big men that had Aaron Fuller previously). Some names of note for Michigan:
Quincy Roberts 6-foot-5 SG Harrisburg (Penn.) - This athletic wing can pop an open jumper from the perimeter and has the quicks and handle to break you down and then attack the basket. His list of schools includes Penn State, Pittsburgh, Duquesne, George Mason, Delaware and Arizona State.
Justin Watts 6-foot-4 SG Durham C.E. Jordan (N.C.) - This long and lean wing can knock down jumper from three or off dribble on the move. He has handle to create drive too. His schools include Illinois, Temple, Virginia, George Mason, Penn State and East Carolina.
Quentin Dailey 6-foot-3 CG Las Vegas Bishop Gorman - This Athletic Vegas combo has really developed into a solid combo guard over the past year. He can still score off the dribble or with perimeter jumper but looks to pass it to open man too. His list of schools includes Gonzaga, Michigan, Iowa, Iowa State, Oregon, Oregon State, Pepperdine and UNLV.
Ebuka, Kyle Cassity, Corey Person (a probable preferred walk-on for U-M via the Kalamazoo Promise), Stacey Waters and others are in the other names section.
The fact that Michigan is not listed on either Quincy or Justin’s kids lists may be telling, we’ll see. I have no idea who Quentin Dailey is but we are certainly casting a wide net.
Post Game: Rebounding. Defense. Free throw. Toughness. Missing all of them, Pruitt dominated us inside, Randle dominated us on the wing. Michigan showed flashes like they have all season but the Illini were too much in the end. Simply have to play the full 40 minutes, no more 30 minute games. 9-17 FT shooting is not acceptable either, these are things that should probably be correctable though so we will see. Beating a lowly Iowa team at home should be possible. Continue reading ‘Illinois & Quick Hitters’
