Well this is why we follow recruiting right. Ebuka decommitted from Colorado just a few days after he committed. I don’t know how much of a shot Michigan has in this one but I can certainly feel Colorado’s pain after Legion, Beverley, Horford and Crawford. I would expect Texas A&M and the instate schools to be the major players for Ebuka, but I thought they would be before and he verballed to Colorado. I also have not heard anything on the Watts front either after Beilein’s planned visit to North Carolina.

Cassity is off the board, that leaves one more target for 2008. We’ll see how the Justin Watts recruitment plays out then it is on to 2009.
Zack Novak committed to Michigan according to Rivals and Scout. For more info on Novak check here for old reports. Also I did not see Justin Watts at the game and don’t think he was there but I am not 100% sure. Jordan Morgan was definetely in the house though.
Zack Novak video (#32 red): Sectionals (vs Merrillville), and vs Crown Point.
The latest on Kyle Cassity from IllinoisHSBasketball.com:
“I’m going up on an official visit to Michigan and coming back on Tuesday,” Cassity said. “I had a good time (at the state tournament). It didn’t come out the way we wanted it too, but it was certainly a time I will always remember,” he added.
According to Cassity, Michigan has not extended a scholarship offer yet, but some experts are speculating that Michigan has not been candid about their plan to offer the 6-5 wing on the visit. “There is no scholarship offer yet,” affirmed Cassity. “I’m excited to get up and check stuff out. They are in the Big Ten, the coach seems like a nice guy, and distance isn’t real bad.”
- Carmel knocked off Franklin Central 54-43 in the regional semifinals this afternoon. They will face Brownsburg at 8 pm tonight. Here are a few message board reports, and here is the Indy Star’s game write up. Stu was only 4-20 but led Carmel with 16 points.
- Kyle Cassity scored 16 points in Pinckneyville’s state semifinal 47-44 loss to North Lawndale. Here’s a good message board report on Cassity’s game. Cassity will probably make his way up for a visit now that his season is over.
- Justin Watts is expected on campus ($) and Zack Novak was on campus Thursday night (not sure if he still is here).
- Tomorrow’s game against Purdue can be streamed online through CSTV if you can’t get to a TV.
- 2009 guard Diamond Taylor is off board, he committed to Wisconsin.
- Wolverine women lost to Iowa in the second round of the BigTen Tournament but could get an NIT bid.
Justin Watts’ Durham Jordan team was upset in the first round of the North Carolina state playoffs. Watts had 22 points in the loss, both Watts and Ebuka’s seasons are over so their recruitments should start to pick up steam.
Some updates on Jordan Morgan’s season as well. Jordan was named to the All-Catholic team, which is the highest honor in the CHSL. U of D got bounced in the first round from the CHSL playoffs but added in a couple extra games versus Detroit City, Grosse Pointe North, and Detroit Western (Thursday @ 6pm @U-D). U of D won the games against Detroit City and Grosse Pointe North. Jordan put up a great game against GPN, scoring 24 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists in a 66-54 win. U of D’s first round of districts will be at Mumford High versus Detroit Pershing on Wednesday 2/27 at 4pm. Jordan will be in the house Saturday for Jalen Rose night versus Illinois as well.
Stuart Douglass’ Carmel team fell for the 2nd time this season with a loss to state power Lafayette Central Catholic.
Carmel (17-2) tied the game in the fourth quarter on a three-pointer from Stuart Douglass, but could never regain the lead. Instead, the Knights scored 37 points in the final period to preserve the win.
Here is a little fluff piece on Stuart Douglass and the Carmel Greyhounds capturing their first Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference championship. Carmel coach Galloway had this to say on Stu:
It didn’t take long for senior Stuart Douglass to find his mark Friday night. The University of Michigan recruit made four 3-pointers in the first quarter.
When he comes off of screens and he squares his shoulders and gets his feet set, I think he’s one of the best shooters around,” Galloway said.
Corey Person, a probable preferred walk-on from Kalamazoo Central (via the Kalamazoo Promise) Had a monster game this last weekend scoring 21 points, 15 rebounds and dishing out nine assists against Loy Norrix. Person is reportedly a good student, leader and ball player and will be a great addition next year.
CSTV has an article on the top remaining wing/shooting guard prospects on the board (they posted a similar one for big men that had Aaron Fuller previously). Some names of note for Michigan:
Quincy Roberts 6-foot-5 SG Harrisburg (Penn.) - This athletic wing can pop an open jumper from the perimeter and has the quicks and handle to break you down and then attack the basket. His list of schools includes Penn State, Pittsburgh, Duquesne, George Mason, Delaware and Arizona State.
Justin Watts 6-foot-4 SG Durham C.E. Jordan (N.C.) - This long and lean wing can knock down jumper from three or off dribble on the move. He has handle to create drive too. His schools include Illinois, Temple, Virginia, George Mason, Penn State and East Carolina.
Quentin Dailey 6-foot-3 CG Las Vegas Bishop Gorman - This Athletic Vegas combo has really developed into a solid combo guard over the past year. He can still score off the dribble or with perimeter jumper but looks to pass it to open man too. His list of schools includes Gonzaga, Michigan, Iowa, Iowa State, Oregon, Oregon State, Pepperdine and UNLV.
Ebuka, Kyle Cassity, Corey Person (a probable preferred walk-on for U-M via the Kalamazoo Promise), Stacey Waters and others are in the other names section.
The fact that Michigan is not listed on either Quincy or Justin’s kids lists may be telling, we’ll see. I have no idea who Quentin Dailey is but we are certainly casting a wide net.
DeShawn Sims is getting a lot of love in the papers and deservedly so. He was taking a lot of heat for his lackluster performance the last few games. Ann Arbor News: Sims lets the game come to him. Detroit News: Sims propels Wolverines. Free Press: Sims shows what might lie ahead.- Mason Plumlee scored 18 points in an easy Christ School win.
- Justin Watts leads all scorers with 16 points in a close win.
- How about Purdue? Big time win at the Kohl Center last night, are they real contenders?
Sorry, have been slacking a little with the recruiting updates. Here is a big load of updates. Also be sure to check out the Aaron Fuller article I posted in the OSU Post-Game post. One other thing to mention is that I am hearing another SG target that might be a possibility for 08. I’ll try to find out more and post the name soon.
Justin Watts
- Watts scores 21 including game winner in a win over Riverside. (Thanks for the heads up on these articles from our readers
) - Watts scores 30 leading Jordan past East Chapel Hill.
“Justin [Watts] is a super young man with a great work ethic and great attitude,” Annas said of Watts. “He played very well tonight. I thought his defense was pretty tough on [Ty] Alston. I thought he did a good job working on offense down inside. He was able to post up, score and get fouled. He’s just a great guy to coach.”
Stuart Douglass
Carmel is up to 2nd in the AP state rankings and is focused on a MIC championship. Carmel also escaped against Zionsville after a lackluster performance after their big win over Lawrence North.
Ben Cronin
Cronin continues to put up monster numbers, this time with 36 points in a 69-55 win over an “undersized Binghampton”
An undersized Binghamton squad had little answer for 7-foot-1 Henninger center Ben Cronin in a 69-55 non-league basketball loss Tuesday night in Syracuse.
Cronin, who has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Michigan, closed with 36 points– 24 coming after the Patriots were within 26-22 at the midway point.
Ebuka Anyaorah
A good feature article here on Ebuka who at this point is seeming a lot like on of the home run candidates for 2008. It’s hard to get a read on Michigan’s chances in this one though.
Ben Cronin continued his stellar play in the Mayor’s Roundball Tournament and helped lead his team to their second straight championship and his second straight MVP. Watch video here (click ‘Watch the story’), boxscore, .
Henninger retained the Mayor’s Roundball Tournament trophy thanks to a triple-double from “Big” Ben Cronin.
Cronin had 18 points, 15 rebounds and 11 blocks to lead the Black Knights to a 69-40 win over Fowler. He wins the tournament MVP for the second-straight season.
Here is a good report on Justin Watts from ‘alum_at_acc’ from the Rivals Message Boards:
Very impressed with his attitude and game. He plays on a good HS team and there are very few plays drawn up just for him. He plays within the system, making good passes, defending, rebounding, and getting back to stop fast breaks. He also showed some good leadership, making sure they were organized for inbound passes, etc. He was also the first player to run over to a fallen teammate.
He is 6′ 5″ and looks like Legion or Shepperd. He is strong and physically mature. He is a great athlete and plays like Harris, trying to get to the rim and finish there. He converted at least 2 ali-op baskets. He can make his own shot but he shoots from a relatively low position. Excellent free-throw shooter and he draws alot of fouls like Manny.
In the game I watched, they beat Durham Southern, a good team by about 10, something like 72 to 62. He had 26 points, about 8 rebounds, and maybe 3 assists. He is the 2nd tallest guy in their lineup and he mostly played the 3 postion.
Jordan Morgan’s U-D Jesuit team took a loss to Henry Ford 76-56. Morgan pulled down a game high seven rebounds.
Justin Watts’ name has serviced recently of late, and Michigan has seen him play. Rivals posted this article
($) about his recruitment and it seems like he would be a good fit for UM. A wing that can score and score a lot seems like a definite fit. WRAL had this report on Watts from his loss to Taft and UNC commit Larry Drew earlier today:
Jordan’s Justin Watts wanted to remind everyone that he is still capable of playing. In addition to hammering home several slam dunks, Watts put up 24 points – the only Falcon to score in double digits.
Eric Lacy also has the latest on Jerret Smith, an interview with his father who claims to know of no glaring academic problems. Beilein would not have suspended Smith for academics if there were no problems, however it seems pretty clear that there is more to this than the grades. Bottom line is Beilein wants his point guard to be a leader on the court, in the classroom and on the practice floor. Just my opinion but I think there is going to have to be some major compromise to get Jerret back on the team. (Lacy also wrote a good piece on Michigan’s struggles and where they go from here).
