Well this is why we follow recruiting right. Ebuka decommitted from Colorado just a few days after he committed. I don’t know how much of a shot Michigan has in this one but I can certainly feel Colorado’s pain after Legion, Beverley, Horford and Crawford. I would expect Texas A&M and the instate schools to be the major players for Ebuka, but I thought they would be before and he verballed to Colorado. I also have not heard anything on the Watts front either after Beilein’s planned visit to North Carolina.

- Anyaorah Commits To Big 12 School ($)
Posted that this was looking very likely but now it’s official. Two remain: Watts and Cassity. - Rosters chosen for Indiana North-South All-Star Classic
Congrats to Stu and Zack for making this team. The game is March 30th at Vincennes University at 4pm. - No. 1 recruit Terrelle Pryor picks Ohio State
If you live under a rock and didn’t hear, Pryor is going to the “University of Ohio State” as expected. - It’s another March without Michigan but here are my first round upset picks: Western Kentucky, Davidson, St Joes, St Marys, and Siena! Cal State Fullerton is an interesting team because they have almost-Wolverine Marcus Crenshaw (damn JUCO admissions) and almost-offered Josh Akognon on their roster, I’ll certainly be watching that one.
Sounds like the Ebuka Anyaorah sweepstakes are over. The Daily Camera is reporting that Ebuka is likely to commit to Colorado very shortly. Guess we will never know what happened with Ebuka’s visit.
McClain’s ability to recruit is another reason Bzdelik enjoys his company so much. And it appears the coaching staff is on the verge of locking up another prize recruit.
Ebuka Anyaorah, a 6-foot-4 guard from Suwanee, Ga., is expected to chose CU over Michigan, Texas A&M;, Georgia and Georgia Tech. He made a visit to Boulder on March 1 and watched the Buffs beat Iowa State 67-55.
Anyaorah is a talented late bloomer who averaged 26.1 points, 8.5 rebounds and three assists per game. CU had a scholarship become available after Xavier Silas was dismissed from the team last month.
CSTV has an article on the top remaining wing/shooting guard prospects on the board (they posted a similar one for big men that had Aaron Fuller previously). Some names of note for Michigan:
Quincy Roberts 6-foot-5 SG Harrisburg (Penn.) - This athletic wing can pop an open jumper from the perimeter and has the quicks and handle to break you down and then attack the basket. His list of schools includes Penn State, Pittsburgh, Duquesne, George Mason, Delaware and Arizona State.
Justin Watts 6-foot-4 SG Durham C.E. Jordan (N.C.) - This long and lean wing can knock down jumper from three or off dribble on the move. He has handle to create drive too. His schools include Illinois, Temple, Virginia, George Mason, Penn State and East Carolina.
Quentin Dailey 6-foot-3 CG Las Vegas Bishop Gorman - This Athletic Vegas combo has really developed into a solid combo guard over the past year. He can still score off the dribble or with perimeter jumper but looks to pass it to open man too. His list of schools includes Gonzaga, Michigan, Iowa, Iowa State, Oregon, Oregon State, Pepperdine and UNLV.
Ebuka, Kyle Cassity, Corey Person (a probable preferred walk-on for U-M via the Kalamazoo Promise), Stacey Waters and others are in the other names section.
The fact that Michigan is not listed on either Quincy or Justin’s kids lists may be telling, we’ll see. I have no idea who Quentin Dailey is but we are certainly casting a wide net.
This has clearly been a long season and anytime you have single digit wins there is a lot wrong. Before the season I wrote that Michigan had to stick together until the 2nd half of the Big Ten slate when their conference schedule finally lightens up. The schedule has been rough (ranked third by Sagarin, and 8th in the RPI) but does that excuse Michigan’s questionable losses to teams like Central Michigan, Harvard, and Iowa?
This season is showing how hard it is for a young team (of the “core 5″ there are 3 freshman and 2 sophomores) to learn how to win. The trips to Georgetown and Alaska were major blows to the team’s confidence. Then a home game against Boston College, a solid but not great team, and another disappointing loss, led to another loss and losing became more the expectation than the exception. A warn down young team headed to play Harvard in a game that seemed almost laughable to them and they saw first hand what it meant to play with heart, getting beat handily by a subpar team. Michigan is clearly a better team than Harvard who lost to Brown (who Michigan coasted by in week one) by 20 points, but they had not developed that winning edge.
- Ebuka’s team lost last night and has been eliminated from the Georgia state tournament. Ebuka scored 31 points in a 75-51 loss. A couple things that were passed along to me about Ebuka that I thought I should mention. First it seems like his stats are somewhat padded in the sense that he plays all 32 minutes whether the team is winning big or not. Second, it sounds like the instate schools, Georgia Tech and Georgia are really paying attention to this one. So it seems like this one might be a long shot for Michigan and we might need a little Carlos Brown style magic.
- Update on Plumlee from Scout: “Everything has changed” ($$)…. Looks like we might be able to kiss this one goodbye.
- Stuart Douglass and Carmel fell to Warren Central. Douglass was key in getting the game to overtime: “The Warriors led 63-59 near the end of regulation, but Michigan-bound Stuart Douglass hit a 3-pointer with 15:2 seconds left. Warren turned the ball over trying to get it inbounds, and Moore threw a perfect alley-oop to Morgan Newton to put Carmel up 64-63 with 10 seconds to play.” but Warren Central proved to be too much in OT.
- Michigan Daily on Ant Wright becoming a reliable sixth man.
Sorry, have been slacking a little with the recruiting updates. Here is a big load of updates. Also be sure to check out the Aaron Fuller article I posted in the OSU Post-Game post. One other thing to mention is that I am hearing another SG target that might be a possibility for 08. I’ll try to find out more and post the name soon.
Justin Watts
- Watts scores 21 including game winner in a win over Riverside. (Thanks for the heads up on these articles from our readers
) - Watts scores 30 leading Jordan past East Chapel Hill.
“Justin [Watts] is a super young man with a great work ethic and great attitude,” Annas said of Watts. “He played very well tonight. I thought his defense was pretty tough on [Ty] Alston. I thought he did a good job working on offense down inside. He was able to post up, score and get fouled. He’s just a great guy to coach.”
Stuart Douglass
Carmel is up to 2nd in the AP state rankings and is focused on a MIC championship. Carmel also escaped against Zionsville after a lackluster performance after their big win over Lawrence North.
Ben Cronin
Cronin continues to put up monster numbers, this time with 36 points in a 69-55 win over an “undersized Binghampton”
An undersized Binghamton squad had little answer for 7-foot-1 Henninger center Ben Cronin in a 69-55 non-league basketball loss Tuesday night in Syracuse.
Cronin, who has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Michigan, closed with 36 points– 24 coming after the Patriots were within 26-22 at the midway point.
Ebuka Anyaorah
A good feature article here on Ebuka who at this point is seeming a lot like on of the home run candidates for 2008. It’s hard to get a read on Michigan’s chances in this one though.
- Ben Cronin and company fell to Proctor for the second time this year. Cronin was held to 13 points in the three point loss.
- Mason Plumlee continues his stellar play with a 14 point effort for the 21-2 Greenies.
- Darius Morris has been lighting up the stat sheet with big numbers as well, the 09 Cali-PG would be a great get for Michigan.
- Ebuka Anyaorah, North Gwinnett: Since the Christmas break, the 6-4 guard has been playing well for the Bulldogs. He is averaging 25 points and nine rebounds as North has won three straight. He had a 43-point performance against Spartanburg, S.C., in a holiday tournament. He has received interest from several major colleges, including Georgia and Georgia Tech. [UMHoops: And Michigan :-)]
- Justin Watts also seems to still be putting up solid numbers. Watts and T.J. Thorpe combined for 45 points in a recent game.
Post Game: Rebounding. Defense. Free throw. Toughness. Missing all of them, Pruitt dominated us inside, Randle dominated us on the wing. Michigan showed flashes like they have all season but the Illini were too much in the end. Simply have to play the full 40 minutes, no more 30 minute games. 9-17 FT shooting is not acceptable either, these are things that should probably be correctable though so we will see. Beating a lowly Iowa team at home should be possible. Continue reading ‘Illinois & Quick Hitters’
