Quotables

“We could lose every game the rest of this year as long as we get this one.” - Javon Ringer

“We are not going to lose to State,” - Brandon Graham

“It means more to us than a championship.” - Otis Wiley

Nothing like some juicy quotes to get a rivalry week going. The weather calls for rain and showers from Friday afternoon through Saturday. I guess this helps Michigan State because they have a consistent running game and when it rains Michigan turns the ball over even more than usual. The analysis all points to MSU in this game, the only thing on our side is the dominance of this rivalry. We need some of those patented Michigan State moments to have a chance in this one. The sad part is that we have had a lot more of those “moments” this year than our brothers in East Lansing.

I’m going Michigan State 28 - Michigan 17. Little Brother has to win a few games here and there. Let’s hear your predictions in the comments.

Recruiting Notes: Hot Board Updated

I finally updated to 2009 Hot Board, there aren’t a lot of names on it because we only have one scholarship left but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a couple more pop up over the high school season. It is also redesigned with a couple new features. First extra information is available if you click the “Show/Hide” link. Second, clicking the players picture will take you to all posts on UMHoops that are tagged in that particular category.. Let me know if you find any problems or have suggestions. I’ll have a full 2010 hot board next week, sorry for the delay.

Ohio State is bringing in a number of visitors from Michigan this weekend including Kearney:

The Buckeyes are planning to play host to 2011 prospects Brandan Kearney and Percy Gibson (both out of Detroit (Mich.) Southeastern), Matt Pouches from Hartland (Mich.) Hartland, Tommy McCune from Saginaw (Mich.) and Paul Honigford from Sugarcreek (Ohio) Garaway Local School this weekend. Class of 2012 prospects Columbus (Ohio) Marion Franklin wing Elijah Macon, Ray Lee and Traevon Crater are expected to be on campus this weekend.

Ohio State seems to be a year ahead of everyone else in recruiting. Some football stuff after the page split. Also mentioned in the article, Russell Byrd is in Kentucky for Midnight Madness.

Football Friday: Illinois

I really don’t know what to think about this game against Illinois. The optimist in me tells me we turned the corner and the realest in me tells me not so fast. At half time last week we looked like one of the worst football teams in the country before storming back against a top 10 (sorta) team. In a game like that there comes a time when you realize you hit rock bottom. You look to the left and right and say ‘this can’t get any worse, let’s just go play’. I believe whatever was said in that Michigan locker room at half time (however ridiculous it may have been) brought the kids together. They realized they played as awful as they were capable of in the first half and were only down 3 scores. Now we just have to see if they can carry that attitude and momentum into Saturday’s game.

I have written about 3 football games, and I have picked all of them wrong (which is why I blog about basketball). But hopefully that trend keeps up because I am going to pick Illinois 24 - Michigan 17.  I was pretty impressed with Illinois against PSU. They have proven that their offense can score the ball and if it wasn’t for Derrick Williams they might have won that game in Happy Valley. With Michigan I’m taking the wait and see approach, hopefully each game turns me into a little more of a believer.

On a side note, am I the only one who thought Illini fans crying during Chief Illiniwek’s last dance during the Ill/UM hoops game 2 years ago was pathetic?

Football Friday: Wisconsin & Hoops Visits

I am more excited and hopefully about the basketball visitors this weekend than the game itself. So much so that I’m going to talk about the visitors more than the football game. First lets take a look at who is due in town and what we know:

  • Nate Lubick (PF - 2010)  - Big time power forward prospect has been to Ann Arbor several times and appears to be favoring the Maize and Blue.
  • Austin Carroll (SG - 2010) - Lubick’s teammate appears to be becoming a more serious target and will move to the class of ‘10.
  • Jordan Morgan (PF - 2009) - U-D big man and Michigan commit Jordan Morgan will be on hand selling Michigan to the other visitors.
  • Trey Ziegler (PG/SG/SF - 2010) - Dynamic 2010 guard is regarded in many circles as the best player in Michigan regardless of class. Already his second Michigan football visit this fall. Michigan, UCLA, CMUand Michigan State appear to be the main teams involved.
  • Brandan Kearney (PG - 2011) - Big 2011 point guard has been interested in Michigan for a while. Connection to the Edwards family. Tennessee, Kentucky, MSU, Syracuse, and Ohio State are all involved in his recruitment.
  • Other young visitors like Christian Vaughn, and Percy Gibson are also going to be on campus in what should be a huge recruiting weekend for Michigan.
  • I don’t think Lubick will drop this weekend but it’s still a huge weekend getting arguably the top three targets on the recruiting board on campus together. Maybe the dominos start falling but predicting that might be getting a little ahead of ourselves. Hopefully the atmosphere is great though, Big Ten opener, Michael Phelps, and maybe a win??
Now for some football links:
The Wolverines are huge underdogs at home against Wisconsin obviously but I think that the offense looked miles better against Notre Dame than the rest of the season. The defense… not so much. Hopefully the team can win one for the hoops squad but I’m going to have to go with Wisconsin 24 - Michigan 13. My player of the game: Travis Beckum. Let’s hear your predictions and thoughts about the hoops visitors.

Football Friday: Beat Notre Dame

More football links this week from around the blogosphere and mainstream media in what is I guess a semi-weekly feature here.

Let’s hear the score predictions, I’ll go with Michigan 17 - Notre Dame 6 with a late defensive touchdown to put the game out of reach. It’s gonna be a wet one and I think it comes down to Michigan’s domination on the defensive line that wins them the game.
