- Recruiting wars don’t let U-M, MSU thrive together
Can Michigan and MSU both succeed? We better hope so because MSU isn’t going anywhere. I don’t think instate talent is the whole issue either. U-M did a pretty good job recruiting instate talent for a few years under Tommy and MSU was basically unfazed. - Lubick Raves About Michigan Visit ($)
Hard not to enjoy last weekend in Ann Arbor. - Basketball: Stover is on the verge of making his college choice
It’s not Michigan. - In Defense of: Chris Webber
The people that hate him or love him aren’t ever going to change in my opinion. - Matt Vogrich is making his last official visit this weekend to Ann Arbor. One of the best chances left at an 09 kid, Notre Dame is also heavily involved. Would be a big time commit in my opinion.
- New scoreboard along the scorers table and speakers have been installed in Crisler.
- Beilein’s back in town

Illinois High School Basketball has the latest on 2009 SG Matt Vogrich:
People think Matt Vogrich is all about the three pointer and will be the token shooter off the bench for whatever final four contender he selects, but that isn’t quite the truth. An underrated athlete, Vogrich got his fair share of dunks in traffic this summer. His fast break dunk on “Matt Vogrich Jr.” (Ben Brust) at the Chicago Summer Classic was the best dunk I witnessed all summer. Some college coaches (who must remain unnamed) that offered Matt this summer were frequently heard throughout July saying things like “I always knew he could shoot, but I didn’t know he could do THAT!” And “That kid can start on my team right now…I have to have him… Where did he come from?” (Read more)
Vogrich seems to be the all around real deal and would be a big time coup for Beilein.
Got word that 2009 PF commitment Jordan Morgan will be in Ann Arbor for the big recruiting weekend as well. He also has scheduled his official visit for the Michigan State game.
Finally, a random rant. The Free Press posted this article last containing the Beilein quotes that were discussed here with this some what ridiculous headline:
UM’s Beilein makes orphanage joke at coaches clinic
I posted the quote here earlier, and I really don’t think it warranted a headline like that. The joke clearly wasn’t about orphanages, it was about parents and alumni. To their credit they did update the headline but this gives me a good idea how Rich Rodriguez turned into a cheap asshole who swears and has no family values so quickly. Here is the new headline:
U-M’s Beilein jokes about parents, alumni at clinic
Beilein: Better days ahead for U-M men’s basketball
The Grand Rapids Press covers Beilein’s talk with local high school coaches on the west side of the state. There are a couple good quotes from Beilein as he talks about the future of the program.
Failure is a fertilizer for growth, so we have to embrace failure,” Beilein said. “You will love the product we will eventually put out there. If you have one eye on yesterday and one eye on tomorrow, we will get cross-eyed today. You have to seize today.
It also appears that Beilein is happy coaching here, even after the rough start:
“I have finally come to a place that I love,” Beilein said. “I have said that there are only two places I would rather coach at. One is an orphanage, because I wouldn’t have their parents bothering me. And second, a prison, because I wouldn’t have to worry about the alumni coming back.”
There is more good stuff in the article so read the whole thing.
Hoops recruiting notebook: Several updates ($)
The Wolverine takes a look at Matt Vogrich’s recruitment and has updates on a couple new big men targets.
I’ve mentioned this recently but this weekend is setup to be a huge recruiting weekend for the hoops team. Lou Dawkins is reporting that Nate Lubick, Trey Ziegler, Brandan Kearney, Christian Vaughn, and Percy Gibson are all due in Ann Arbor this week (Austin Carroll will also visit with Lubick I believe). I had heard Kearney was due in for the Illinois game but he could be coming for both. It would have been great to have Darius on campus this weekend as was originally planned but we will have to settle for Michael Phelps to generate excitement. Hopefully the football team can win one for the hoops team.

Spartans Weblog has tons of coverage on MSU’s regional action this weekend and is a very good read. It’s funny that the weak Big Ten may get 2 teams in the Elite 8, guess that “boring” defensive basketball is effective come tourney time. - Chris Webber: Talented youth, unfinished life

DeShawn Sims has been everywhere in the news lately. First, a Michigan Daily article about Sims not finding his shooting touch. DeShawn is a painful 8 of 38 in Michigan’s last three losses, in Michigan’s last four wins he is 20 of 49.- The Daily also had a column today on Michigan recruiting in Detroit, specifically about St. Cecilia’s summer league.
- John Beilein told Sam Webb on WTKA that he plans to work with DeShawn Sims one-on-one and make him into a great junior in the Big Ten, audio here. It’s a good thing that Beilein realizes the importance of DeShawn Sims development because I think that this team next year hinges a lot on Peedi becoming a consistent performer. This will certainly be a good test of John Beilein’s famed player development.

This has clearly been a long season and anytime you have single digit wins there is a lot wrong. Before the season I wrote that Michigan had to stick together until the 2nd half of the Big Ten slate when their conference schedule finally lightens up. The schedule has been rough (ranked third by Sagarin, and 8th in the RPI) but does that excuse Michigan’s questionable losses to teams like Central Michigan, Harvard, and Iowa?
This season is showing how hard it is for a young team (of the “core 5″ there are 3 freshman and 2 sophomores) to learn how to win. The trips to Georgetown and Alaska were major blows to the team’s confidence. Then a home game against Boston College, a solid but not great team, and another disappointing loss, led to another loss and losing became more the expectation than the exception. A warn down young team headed to play Harvard in a game that seemed almost laughable to them and they saw first hand what it meant to play with heart, getting beat handily by a subpar team. Michigan is clearly a better team than Harvard who lost to Brown (who Michigan coasted by in week one) by 20 points, but they had not developed that winning edge.
Aaron Fuller has “received a Big Ten offer” according to Hoopmasters ($$ link). A Michigan offer seems probable here based on the teams that have been mentioned to be recruiting him. (Update: Purdue may be recruiting him as well)- Also hearing that Zack Novak was paid a visit by the man in charge at practice.
- There are less than 1000 tickets available for the Ohio State game Sunday. The main question is how many of them are Buckeye fans.
- Be sure to watch the YouTube video I posted last night. The kid from PA I was referring to is #10 (white) Quincy Roberts. There are a lot of non-basketball related things here and I don’t know if it could ever work out but it’s been mentioned so I’m passing it along.
- Very good Beilein article linked from the Buffalo News, a pretty scary quote about Cronin and the Fab Five.
Don’t forget the Beilein radio show debuts tonight. The show is 6 p.m. Mondays at Damon’s Grill in Ann Arbor (near Briarwood - map). The show will also be broadcast on The Ticket (97.1 FM and 1270 AM). It will be held 6-7 p.m. Mondays until March 10. Wouldn’t be suprised the see a Maize Rage group up there tonight to support Beilein. I can’t make it but will try to catch it on the radio.

Back with more tomorrow when I am back in the swing of things. Been busy for the holidays.
Program is already in pretty bad shape, so I am not sure how much this does any more damage. We are what we are at this point. A team who’s two best players are freshman, and third best player is an inconsistent forward with a poor handle. The refs were absolutely terrible as you can see here. But this wasn’t what killed us in my opinion. The game slipped away a few plays after the shot clock no call. Ronnie had a WIDE open look from three (when we are down 4) and misses it. He has to make this shot. Giordan Watson comes down and drains a three, we don’t score, Watson hits a floater… 9pt game and it didn’t get close again til Dion Harris er Ekpe Udoh misses the front end of the 1 and 1.

A lot of people are wondering about why Manny didn’t play and saying we need Legion. I tend to disagree. Continue reading ‘Another devastating loss’
