Michigan and Virginia Tech are set for a 7:15 p.m. tip-off at the Crisler Center this evening. The Wolverines will look to pick up their third KenPom top-50 win of the season, matching last year’s total (H/T: Drew Hallett).

    That possession by Irvin….woof

  • MGoTweeter

My gosh. This offense. Move the gd ball

  • Cory

What a TERRIBLE possession by Irvin.

  • Chezaroo

    Zak giveth and Zak ………..

  • andrew

Not sure where the hope comes from after the past few years.

  • gobluemd16

Are you kidding me with that possess?? Just about worst look you can get.

  • gobluemd16

VT has outplayed us down the stretch, period.

  • Wayman Britt

Game over. Terrible game by UM

  • Mattski

    Really unimaginative, that possession.

  • andrew

Michigan has become the definition of a mediocre program in basketball. Not sure what changed, but it just doesn’t look good.

  • MGoTweeter

Michigan is still playing offense like they have nba players at the guards/wings and they just don’t

  • gobluemd16

Clock went a lot longer than the play, no??

  • jemblue

    Irvin as the go-to guy . . . I just don’t see it.

    • Chezaroo

      Lucky shirt?

      • jemblue

Yes, but I had it on for SC, too. It’s Adidas – I may need to switch…

        • Chezaroo

          No doubt

  • andrew

I think you have to sacrifice wins to play talent. They need to run out Wagner all game and just live and die by it as they just aren’t very good.

  • Cory

Luckily Donnal’s garbage inbounds pass gives us a better chance.

  • gobluemd16

Shouldve been around 4.4 after foul and about 4 sec now instead of 3

  • Mattski

    Donnal wtf.

  • Wayman Britt

UM now needs to steal a game at UCLA, so they can have one quality preseason win otherwise no tourney

    • gobluemd16

Relax, man. Way too early for that

    • Timothy David

UCLA game certainly becomes much bigger now

    • AAtoLA

UCLA will pick us apart they way they are playing. We have no answer for Lonzo. Walton seriously looks like he’s just going through the motions. I thought he’s supposed to hunt for shots??

  • Chezaroo

Are you kidding me with that loss? Talk about having the rug pulled out from under you. Dang. Double dang too.

    • Wayman Britt

Let’s face it UM is not very good.

  • andrew

It’s hard to win games when you play defense so poorly and lack talent on the other end. It’s going to be a long year of mediocre basketball.

    • Cory

      Jesus dude. We get it.

      • andrew

Wait, Cory. Do you though? You see, Michigan gave up a lot of points in the second half, which meant that they lost the game. Michigan has been very poor on defense for years now. When you’re poor on defense, it is difficult to win at the game of basketball. Does that help?

        • Cory

          LOL. Such a troll.

        • MAZS

But we have won in the past—alot–when our D wasn’t very good. The problem is our offense has gotten worse–no PnR, no penetration, inconsistent 3s– while our defense hasn’t shown any improvement under Donlan.

          • andrew

I think the defense under Donlon has been better until this game. Unfortunately, it all went away quickly. And offensively, I don’t think people realized how talented the team was with Burke, Stauskaus, McGary, Levert etc. Those teams had NBA first round picks on it. I don’t see that on this year’s team, so I think they will need to be better on defense to make up for it.

    • MAZS

I’ve yet to see any defensive improvement.

    • Indiana_Matt

What do you mean lack talent on the other end? I think we have offensive talent. Just couldn’t stop anybody.

      • andrew

I agree that Michigan has some talent. It just doesn’t all seem to fit together quite yet in a consistent way. And I suppose the hope is that they will all start to mesh in a cohesive way. The season is quite long.

  • Brutal loss for Michigan. Led almost the entire way and let Virginia Tech leave Ann Arbor with a 73-70 win.

  • malcolm bolt

Disgraceful loss. These 2 losses are really bad.

  • gobluemd16

Game lost with almost no defense the second half and none the last 3 min. Zak possess down 1 with 29 sec left was laughable. Really bad loss. We really needed and should have won that game.

    • Indiana_Matt

Agreed. Man, I haven’t been in this bad of a mood after a loss in a while. So much brilliance at times. And then to just give it away. Bad taste.

      • gobluemd16

I can think of a time :(. Been a bad week for Michigan athletics

    • Indiana_Matt

Mo should have touched the ball on that last possession.

  • Jordan

Team is soft. Everyone got excited after our play in New York. Same team, different year.

    • Wayman Britt

Agree, DJ is back to his normal self

  • iBleedBlue

MAAR’s matador defense and Zak’s shot selection really sealed that loss for us. How do we manage to be so Jekyll and Hide?

  • malcolm bolt

Many reasons for this loss but DJ Wilson’s last foul totally gave VT life to win the game.

    • Wayman Britt

I bet that announcer in NY who said DJ could play in the NBA is probably crawling under a rock now.

  • AAtoLA

This team just doesn’t have the killer instinct to close games. Walton looks like he’s sleep walking on offense. UCLA is going to dump truck us, I’m afraid.

  • Chezaroo

Weird substation pattern last 6 minutes. VT went after DONNAL almost every possession late.

  • malcolm bolt

    This is a MAC team.

  • KB

This team will be lucky to make tourney again, and our young players don’t look promising for the future. Ugh.

  • Ross

just too many flaws on this team….no playmakers, no high level athleticism, mediocre defense. Going to be a challenge to get into the tournament.

  • Josh Sullivan

They are who we thought they were! (Dennis Green voice)

See you in the NIT for the rematch Va Tech

    • MAZS

VT is preseason #5 in the ACC–and since Jay Williams believes the ACC will have 11-12 teams in the NCAA tourney, then they won’t be there in the NIT. Then again Williams could be looking at it through ACC-colored glasses, and just plain wrong. Neither would be the first time.

      • gobluemd16

VT wasnt that impressive to me. This is a game we had to have won. Wouldn’t be surprised if they weren’t a tourney team

        • MAZS

I agree that weren’t impressive, but everyone said the same about South Carolina. I think people generally over-rate the quality of the “other” teams.

          • Josh Sullivan

They are maybe the 8th best team in the conference and will be another bubble team right with us. If a conference gets 12 teams in them the rest of the NCAA should just give up.

Main point is, this is the same team we saw last year. No emotion, no care of the game outcome, no aggressiveness, lazy defense, and a stagnant offense.

          • MAZS

did you somehow miss my sarcasm about Jay Williams?

  • gobluemd16

People are seriously overreacting here. With that being said, this was clearly a terrible loss. For as optimistic as I was after the NYC games and the first half tonight, they just did not look good at all the last 8 min aka winning time. Zak thinks he is Nik/Caris, but sadly he is not.

    • malcolm bolt

Let’s hope the team hasn’t peaked. But this is going to be a roller coaster season.

      • Indiana_Matt

They’ve never peaked in November. I have hope. But this loss was brutal.

        • malcolm bolt

I feel the team is living in the shadow of the games in NY. This squad needs a shrink.

    • gobluemd16

With that being said, we were up 10 with under 8 min left going to the FT line, at home, with VT coming off a long trip to (and from) California. That’s really, really bad.

  • AAtoLA

The way UCLA is playing right now, things could really look embarrassing for us in Westwood next week. Is it just me? I thought Walton was supposed to hunt for shots this season? He was sleepwalking all game.

    • Kevin Dale

I was very disappointed as well for what I saw from DW. The offense was offensive all game.

      • AAtoLA

DW totally confuses me. He’s a senior. He’s not attacking. He’s not hunting shots. And he’s not finishing at the hoop. He blew an open left handed layup early. DW needs to be a threat for our offense to play well. It can’t be the Irvin show. ZI is good but he’s not good enough to take over a game.

    • Chris De Sana

Sorry he’s just not as good as advertised is all

  • bobohle

Amp up the recruiting on your elite targets. Trying to develop lesser talent the last three years is to big of a gamble year after year. M can’t afford three to four years to develop in today’s college game. Exp: Donnal and Wilson. Development should also breed consistency. Exp: Walton and Irvin. Otherwise you get middle of the pack and on the bubble again.

    • Jake

Agreed, why do we keep gambling on projects when we should be getting more “sure” things?

  • Jake

Every year it’s the same storyline: false optimism, followed by crushing reality then finally rationalizing mediocrity.
