Looking to see Irvin have an impact game today. If health was the real reason his play was so erratic and spotty last year, than he needs to string together some consistently solid efforts if not still hurting this year. As a senior he needs to be more reliable and trustworthy for us to have any realistic chance at an upper echelon finish in the Big Ten going forward. That would have to include realistic shot selection amid the flow of the game.

    • Definitely can see the same inconsistencies from Irvin.. but just a couple games, should be interesting.

  • polisci

Looking forward to seeing D.J. continuing to demonstrate his improvement. If he can be an average Big Ten 4 this year, I think this team’s prospects improve dramatically.

  • MGoTweeter

Late night for the students…wonder why

    • Pretty brutal starting schedule for fans with a crazy early Sunday game and a 9pm Friday guarantee game. This week in New York could be a chance to jumpstart at least a bit of enthusiasm around this team (along with taking care of business today).

  • MGoTweeter

Solid start. Iupui is the inverse of Howard. Terrible defense so far but some offensive talent

  • Bo Boroski officiated Michigan State-Arizona in Hawaii on Friday, now back in action in Ann Arbor today.

  • IUPUI seems to be just driving on Duncan Robinson every possession once they get a switch.

    • Chezaroo

He has no chance in that scenario.

  • Chezaroo

    Straight line drives, ugghh

  • Alex

    Nice offensive rebounding.

  • MGoTweeter

Defense so far looks a lot like last year. Not containing the dribble at all and not being physical enough inside.

    • Chezaroo

It”s the Jimmy”s and the Joe”s, nothing else. Our lack of perimeter quickness and inside toughness is not gonna change with Donlon.

  • Simpson for Walton… First chance for X to come in and try to settle down the team in the tight spot.

  • Chezaroo

    Combs can play

  • Great D by Simpson there off the bounce. Still love the things that DJ is giving Michigan — still rough around the edges, but they need his athleticism.

  • MGoTweeter

A little better defense the last few possessions. Irvin did a great job denying the ball unfortunately Michigan got beat anyway

  • Chezaroo

Walton needs 15 shots a game, minimum

  • Chezaroo

    yuck

  • Chezaroo

    straight line matador D

  • Lot’s of discussion this summer about defensive improvement, Michigan still struggling to contain dribble penetration and that’s putting it nicely.

    • Chezaroo

We just have no impact athletes that desire to compete every possession on that end

    • Steve2081

we have some real lead-footed kids on this team. I think this years freshmen and next years will improve that situation a bit though.

      • Chezaroo

Poole and Brooks aint helping that need. Minimal quicks there

        • Matthews certainly will. Simpson will as he continues to improve, think he’s already shown he can get after it on D.

          • Chezaroo

Remains to be seen about Simpson. Concerned size deficiences will promote being bullied by stronger attackers. Who knows how Matthews comes back? He does have physical abilities that we need on that end though.

  • Alex

That’s the way to finish a half.

  • MGoTweeter

Defense definitely needs to improve but I like the way the offense was running. Feel like they really wore iupui down towards the end of the half.

    • 13-0 run to close the half and held IUPUI scoreless for the last 4:18. That’s a great close to the half, but the fact that IUPUI still almost scored 1 PPP that half shows how bad the U-M defense was early on.

Donnal, Wilson critical off the bench again. Irvin seems to be more consistent with the 18 foot jumper than any thing else on the floor. Walton with a couple of big threes again to turn the balance. Loved X’s first half defense in his stint.

      • Chezaroo

Irvin can be so effective coming off screens and getting solid looks. His false belief that he is a 3 point sniper needs to be put to bed.

        • Ideally, he’d be able to come off of those curls a couple feet deeper and hit. Thought it was a good half by Irvin overall though.

          • Chezaroo

Seems much better balanced and formful from the midrange though. His 3 point numbers dont lie, unfortunately.

  • You would never guess that there were 65 fouls called in IUPUI’s first game. Only 11 called in the first half today.

  • gobluemd16

Said it as soon as the Walton, Ibi, Duncan, Moe (with one other) was in that theyd go on a run. Duncan is clearly being targeted on D and Moe is too frequently late to help or out of position. I already prefer DJ, he looks great, as does Mark on the boards and on defense. Offense looked pretty smooth; great close to the half. Zak actually looked very confident in the midrange. Get walton as many catch and shoot 3s as possible!!

    • Second game in a row that Mark has outplayed Moe, will be interesting to track that dynamic. And probably that Wilson has outplayed Duncan as well. Caveat being that it is only half time.

  • DJ Wilson starts the second half for Duncan Robinson. He’s been a bright spot for U-M through a game and a half.

  • MGoTweeter

    What happened to Irvin?

    • Chezaroo

Can”t argue with the results with him sitting though.

      • MGoTweeter

Just wondering. He is still not out of the lockerroom

        • Chezaroo

          yeah you”re right

  • MGoTweeter

Love to see Michigan feeding Wagner inside early this half. Be really nice if they can add some post offense to the arsenal this year.

  • I didn’t see anything specific happen to Irvin. Seemed to be walking a bit gingerly on first two poss then went to bench and subbed out.

  • Irvin checking back into the game now.

  • Chezaroo

Combs is a B1G guard all day

  • MAAR getting more involved off the bounce this game. Good to see, he was pretty passive on Friday.

    • MGoTweeter

Been really passive today too until recently. Seems like he had been settling for a lot of jumpers so far this year instead of driving. Not that the jumpers weren’t open though

      • Chezaroo

I would love to see a more cohesive offensive synergy between Irvin,Walton, and MAAR. Seems fractured to often for some reason. No real consistent flow.

        • MGoTweeter

Yea that’s tough cause they re all so ball dominant on offense. Walton can catch and shoot a bit but mostly all of them need several dribbles to get into a shot

          • Chezaroo

            yep

  • gobluemd16

The defense is SO much better with DJ and Mark in there

  • gobluemd16

Two missed easy layups by Zak and DJ there couldve really salted the game away

    • Steve2081

Zak is the only player in the nation who shoots a much higher % from 18 feet than 0 feet.

    • Pretty bad job finishing around the hoop in this game almost across the board. Getting pretty good looks too.

At least two airballed follow ups…

  • bobohle

If we could ever stop missing all these 2ft shots, just think how much better it would be all the way around.

  • Chezaroo

That had to feel good DJ

  • DJ Wilson is playing some great ball. Love what he’s giving U-M and wouldn’t be surprised at all to see him start vs Marquette. Still plenty of room to grow, but gives U-M something they’ve been lacking the last two years.

    • gobluemd16

He is fitting in, rather than trying to stand out. His improvement is very evident.

  • MGoTweeter

Just can’t get over how much more energy dj Wilson is playing with. Completely different player so far this year

  • gobluemd16

13 rebounds and 5 blocks for DJ.. I mean, dang.

  • Chezaroo

Be very interesting to see how successful we are at limiting dribble drive penetration against Marquette. Whole key to the game.

  • MAZS

eating the clock like its a 5 point lead in a B10 game—play

  • gobluemd16

Potentially the worst last minute of the game from scrubs that I’ve seen. I think 2 TO and 3 fouls all by Lonergan in the last minute (one looked like X’s fault though).

  • bobohle

We can’t afford a slow start against Marquette. DJ Wilson should be the starter over Robinson. Great FT% which should be every game.
