Michigan point guard Derrick Walton Jr. was named to the Preseason All-Big Ten team this afternoon.

His inclusion marks the fifth straight year that a Wolverine was named to the Preseason All-Big Ten team. Caris LeVert earned those honors in 2014-15 and 2015-16, Mitch McGary and Glenn Robinson III were on the team in 2013-14 and Trey Burke in 2012-13.

Walton averaged 11.6 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game last season and recorded the fifth triple-double in Michigan program history.

Being healthy now,the expectations after his freshman season are about to come to pass. I’m glad others are seeing it that way also.

The funny thing is there are no SPARTYS included.

And no Bucknuts, either. I think they’re reluctant to pick incoming freshmen as all-conference in the preseason, what with them having never played in college. All of the optimistic predictions for MSU and OSU are based on their incoming players becoming stars right away.

        • What OSU players are we expecting to make an immediate impact? Seems like OSU returns the bulk of their starting lineup and projections there would be more based on incremental improvement. Similar in a lot of ways to UM.

Hmm – I thought the consensus in Columbus was that they didn’t need to fret about their whole freshman class transferring out, because it just freed up space for the incoming class. But now I see that ESPN ranked their incoming class 35th, 9 spots behind us. Is it my failing memory, or did I just encounter some extremely delusional OSU fans?

Looking for Walton to have a great season. I bet as the season goes on, we see Walton play more and more at 2 guard and X at point. I would love to see Walton improve his defense at the same rate as Morgan improved between his Junior and Senior year.

Is it always ten players on the all conference team?

Looking over the previous list of M players on the preseason list,I recall Tractor Traylor. Now that was a tough Dude. I’m hoping that this M team can get some of that toughness instilled in them.
