Big Ten Tournament: Michigan vs. Purdue Open Thread

Dylan Burkhardt
on

Michigan’s season has new life after yesterday’s win over Indiana and the Wolverines will be looking to parlay that momentum into a trip to the Big Ten Tournament Championship Game.

A win over Purdue would almost assuredly send Michigan to the NCAA tournament — maybe even avoiding a First Four game in Dayton — while a loss would leave it waiting patiently until the brackets are unveiled on Sunday night.

Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. on CBS from Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

If Robinson can’t shoot, can’t drive and can’t play D keep Dawkins in there

  • Tony DeMaria

    Huge miss by Donna

  • Will

    why dont they double hammons

  • Tony DeMaria

    Gonna be tough now.

  • MLaw

That’s probably it. We had our chances and played hard despite tired legs.

  • moenice

    Donnal has no chance

  • mpbear14

    Still in striking distance

  • three_goggles

Credit to Purdue for refusing to stray from the post entries. Hammons taking 17 shots is tough

  • Tony DeMaria

I hope the committee sees the heart and fight we showed this weekend. Purdue is tough for anyone but they are a nightmare matchup for us in particular and we played them competitive in all 3 games and won 1

    • MLaw

No they will claim the eye test if we lose by 11, but if we only lose by 9 we have a chance. BS.

      • mpbear14

Michigan passed the eye test today. No question about it

        • MLaw

Trust me if we play hard and Purdue hits a couple of late game 3’s you will hear that Michigan got blown out regardless of the reality.

          • mpbear14

As long as the committee thinks otherwise it doesn’t matter.

Just compete until the end and we should be safe from the play-in game

          • MLaw

I like our metrics, I honestly think we have better resume’s than Syracuse, Vandy, St. Mary’s who are all in. We are much closer in resume to Butler than to the bubble teams. I’m sick of this narrative that we haven’t beaten enough “good” teams as defined by top 100.

  • Joel_C

Wow. Can’t make 3s or free throws so …

  • jemblue

MAAR is as good a finisher as we’ve had in ages.

  • Joel_C

    Damn. I see you Rank.

  • malcolm bolt

MAAR can get buckets all day. Let him have the ball!

    • mpbear14

And we don’t go back to him

  • Mattski

Big play has just not been sufficient.

    • will

      Been like that all season

  • Joel_C

Alright so time for 3-point barrage

    • MLaw

4 in a row should do it.

      • Tony DeMaria

4 threes and 4 stops and we’re tied! That easy boys

    • Tony DeMaria

I don’t care how poorly Duncan has shot, have him launch 3s every possession from here on out haha

  • Ross

gonna be sweating it out tomorrow

    • mpbear14

      No way. We are in.

      • Ross

        50/50….we will have 12 losses

        • MLaw

Syracuse and Vandy have 13 and they are ahead of us to some/most

        • jemblue

All bubble teams have about that many.

      • Jacob

I disagree. Yes we couldnt be more on the bubble, but 22-12 coming out of the big ten 4 top 26 wins, a crazy amount of injuries, I feel we should be in

      • MGoTweeter

Definitely should be in. Just a question of how much weight the committee puts on the blowout losses

    • Tony DeMaria

I think we are 50/50 at this point

      • mpbear14

        90/10

        • MLaw

          Like the way you think.

        • Tony DeMaria

Based on… We really have no idea the only thing we can go off of is bracketologists and we are out in more brackets than we are in and that was before today

      • Joel_C

Frankly it will be an absolute outrage if we aren’t in. Which is why I’m worried we won’t be.

    • MEL

Irony is if we had won one of the last 4 we wouldn’t have had a chance b’s Indiana on the tourney. And no way do we beat the other 3 top 4 seeds.

  • Chezaroo

    What is Irvin from 3?

    • Tony DeMaria

      Not good

    • MGoTweeter

      1 for 7 I think

      • Chezaroo

        More Rahk please

  • mpbear14

    Don’t stop competing!

  • three_goggles

Good fight. Sure hope Lunardi is wrong

  • Joel_C

    Wow

  • MLaw

Down 15 you need threes to win. two is better for the “eye test” though.

  • Tony DeMaria

Now here comes the “Michigan lost another by double digits” barrage

    • jemblue

It seems like we’ve lost a ton of games by exactly 10 or 11 points.

  • jemblue

Walton’s left it all on the court. Just a little empty in the tank.

  • Will

A team like Monmouth should not be ahead of us. More than half of their games were played against 200+

  • Tony DeMaria

Got to within 6 points with 7 mins left. Scored 3 points over the next 6 mins+

    • jemblue

Pretty much a carbon copy of the game in West Lafayette.

  • malcolm bolt

JB needs to diagram more plays for MAAR in the future.

  • Will

we wont be in because of blowout losses thats my call

    • Mattski

Alright, anonymous internet glass half empty guy, you have registered your vote.

      • Will

Trust me im praying we get it

    • Joel_C

Which would be absurd. Guess we should play Monmouth’s schedule to avoid that problem.

      • Jacob

would be a minimum 2-loss season

  • MGoTweeter

Battled hard but just didn’t have enough to overcome the poor shooting. Tremendous effort throughout the tournament. Hopefully it is enough

  • scipiodreams80

Is St. Joe’s about to pop our bubble?

    • Alex

St. Joe’s has been in the Tourney. We’re fine there I think.

      • scipiodreams80

Ah, ok, that’s good if you’re right. Thanks.

    • Joel_C

Also, that’s only the semi-final. Basically we just can’t have Davidson winning that tournament.

  • bobohle

We’ve been saying it all year. We just don’t have the bigs to compete consistently in the B1G at this time.

  • Chezaroo

We will see if the Michigan “name” is as vaunted as Chris Collins believes

    • bobohle

Good point! Grant Hill and Dickie V think M belongs.

  • Corperryale

A lot of heart but objectively this was still a blowout. Committee won’t be impressed.

  • malcolm bolt

    Tracy Wolfson is hot!

  • Tony DeMaria

Hopefully enough but at least we gave it a good fight. If we had beaten Maryland Wisconsin or Iowa down the stretch we wouldn’t be having this discussion. For some reason everyone immediately soured on Michigan after losing to Iowa. Before that the consensus was that beating one of those 3 punched our ticket. After that we beat a team better than all 3 of those teams on neutral floor and now it’s mixed whether we get in

  • scipiodreams80

I wish people wouldn’t say “4 top 50 rpi wins.” That’s bogus. It’s essentially 4 top *25* rpi wins. Texas is #27, it’s close enough.

  • mstein23

Kids gave it their all. Proud of the effort. From what they showed this weekend, that’s a tournament team.

  • Corperryale

Michigan is likely in but only because this is the weakest bubble in recorded history… The other options are either damaged goods (Syracuse) or mid-major flash in the pans with the committee has tended to exclude. In a 64-team field, this team is out. Thank goodness SMU and Louisville ineligible.

    • jemblue

Fortunately, it hasn’t been a 64-team field for a few years, so that’s not a concern. Also, people say “it’s a weak bubble” every year.

      • Corperryale

Fair enough but Amaker’s best team gets in unanimously over this one. Just saying there is huge room for improvement — this isn’t what “success” looks like.

        • scipiodreams80

Oh, FFS. Shouldn’t there be a moratorium on mentioning Amaker teams??? Enough. Thank God that era is over. Why do people ever want to look back to it. Amaker’s teams always found a way to not only not get off the bubble but to choke their way into not doing so. An Amaker team would have rolled over into a fetal position against IU and taken their kicking and gone home.

          • jemblue

An Amaker team probably would have lost to Northwestern.

    • Joel_C

Is the bubble ever “strong”? It’s the bubble….
