Game 31: Iowa at Michigan Open Thread

on

Michigan hosts Iowa tonight on Senior Night with a chance to keep its NCAA tournament dreams alive. The Wolverines are currently projected as the last team in the NCAA tournament and a win over the Hawkeyes could put them on more stable ground heading into the Big Ten Tournament next week.

Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. with Spike Albrecht and Caris LeVert’s Senior Day festivities scheduled for 7:40 p.m.

Frustrating to think where we’d be if we just wouldn’t have thrown away so many possessions with dumb fundamental mistakes.

  • Chezaroo

    YOU kidding me

  • mpbear14

What a squad. Looking forward to next year.

    • Chezaroo

“My teams on the floor.” ………Norman Dale

  • Joel_C

    We suck

  • MGoTweeter

Well that does it. Gotta win at least two in the big ten tournament, maybe three. Too bad because this game was very winnable if Michigan hadn’t thrown away so many possessions

    • Tony DeMaria

I honestly think we will need to make it to Sunday to get in. Yes Indiana on neutral floor is better win than Iowa at home but I think that this loss will give the committee the perception that UM has been given numerous chances to clinch a spot and fail. Plus Michigan won’t have the luxury of winning to stay in the field, they will have to win themselves back into the field

      • Joel_C

No way. Beat Indiana and we’re in. That said – no chance.

        • Tony DeMaria

I disagree. We have a poor RPI and poor SOS. Our 4th top 100 win is not going to do it IMO.

  • Tony DeMaria

Beilein is obviously a good coach…if he has players to fit his system. The problem is that these players aren’t good enough fits. Can’t we find him a “GM” so he can just be good at coaching

  • mpbear14

So many immediate impact players coming in. Don’t worry about the future. It’s bright.

  • Cory

The only thing that deteriorated worse than the team this season is the quality of comments on these open threads.

    • MGoTweeter

      Hahaha. Comment of the year

    • mpbear14

Clap clap clap – Brady Hoke

    • Tony DeMaria

This team has a way of antagonizing many good commenters

  • AAtoLA

The only recruit I hope is NOT watching is Jordan Poole. I hope NIT doesn’t change his commitment.

    • mpbear14

Not a chance we hang on to him.

      • MGoTweeter

Dude you suck as a fan

        • mpbear14

          So do you.

          Clap clap clap

          • MGoTweeter

            Typical mpbear response

          • mpbear14

Clap clap clap. Everything is fine. Clap clap clap.

      • AAtoLA

Keeping fingers crossed. He’s a game changer.

    • Chezaroo

long way to go in his recruitment

  • Joel_C

Thinking back to that Maryland road game that was stolen from us makes me really angry

  • three_goggles

If we get Northwestern in round one I am very very scared

  • scipiodreams80

This was disgusting. I am a huge Coach B fan, and I am sorry, but that looked like a badly coached team out there tonight and that sucks. Not good enough.

    • jemblue

Agree completely. It just doesn’t feel like we’ve played Beilein basketball over the past month. I don’t know what happened.

      • three_goggles

He didn’t recruit for two years is what happened.

        • jemblue

That doesn’t explain why we’re so fundamentally bad this year. Dribbling, passing, spacing properly, setting good screens, – you don’t have to be a McDonald’s All-American to do those things. One of our calling cards under Beilein has been a very low turnover rate. This year it’s reminded me of Amaker’s tenure.

          • three_goggles

Agreed there. This team reminded me of the Horton/Harris team. But it’s still a roster made up of 4 guys who are best in spot-shooting roles and 4 bigs, none of whom are B1G starter caliber. Obviously losing Levert hurt bad but the best addition from the past 2 years (now half of our team) is a D2 transfer and that says a lot.

      • scipiodreams80

I’ve had it with the bunch of silent partners on the bench. Nobody brings the passion on that bench besides Beilein, and he’s still not the most demonstrative guy. It’s no longer okay.

  • malcolm bolt

This program isn’t in the doldrums, but it is stuck at a crossroads where it has a lot of figuring out to do.

  • GTFOmycourt

Am I total wacko if I confess I am more worried about the quality of our guards than the quality of our bigs at this point and in the near future. Donnal and Doyle were not the reason we lost tonight.

    • Jacob

Idk I mean if our bigs could actually play in the post and go up strong we wouldn’t have to rely so heavy on the three

  • scipiodreams80

Three possessions and they get nary a good look, all down 5, culminating in Irvin dribbling near his head and giving up a TO and a fast break layup. Then after a made bucket, they are lost on defense and they give up a wide open 3. Something really terrible happened after that but I’m so angry I can’t even remember. It was something that involved a team not knowing what the heck they’re doing. Which is inexcusable in the final game of the regular season.

    • MGoTweeter

Not sure exactly what you’re trying to reference. The kill shot three came after a Walton short jumper in the lane and Michigan tried to get back and run 1-3-1 in transition. Walton never had a chance to get back (they had been man the previous couple possessions), and Iowa got a wide open three in the corner. No idea why Michigan tried to fall back in a 1-3-1 there

      • scipiodreams80

No, there was another 3 that came after even that from something terrible that we did.

        • MGoTweeter

Oh ok. Yea I was checking out by that point so not sure

  • AAtoLA

This team looks like a squad built around Caris. And we looked like it all season. Caris and Spike were just two huge losses we could never overcome on a consistent basis this season, unfortunately.

    • Chezaroo

Unfortunately, we were blown out twice with Caris. Its simple, recruiting has got to pick up fast.

      • Tony DeMaria

Again this team has a 5 star and three or four 4 stars on the roster. Recruiting hasn’t been the problem as much as recruiting the wrong fits and/or failing to develop them

  • ToledoUMfan

This game is a perfect example of how it kills this team not having a 4! They could not guard Utoff at all and having a wing like Irvin playing the 4 gives them no advantage at the offensive end. I think I could guard Irvin though!!

    • Dave Pratt

      Someone gets it!!

    • scipiodreams80

Irvin has had the most basic problem all year. He can’t take anyone off the dribble. He can’t even take a 5 off the dribble. That limits you pretty significantly.

      • Dave Pratt

To his defense guy had back surgery. I have a hard time getting on him after going through that and still playing.

I have a bad back so I empathize with the kid

        • scipiodreams80

So do I, and I agree. Just stating the facts. Really hope we see different from him next year. It was very hard to watch this year.

  • ToledoUMfan

Certainly would have been interesting to see what would of happened to this team with a healthy Lavert all year. They simply DON’T have one playmaker on the team besides him! He would of had to carry this team on his back! Probably couldn’t have, but they may have a couple more wins.

    • mpbear14

We saw what this team was like with a healthy levert. It wasn’t pretty.

  • Ross

pathetic….belein should be on the hot seat, no excuses. this team should have made the tournament even without levert and spike. player development has regressed, we have looked slow and unathletic all season long. questionable coaching too – chatman should’ve gotten more time than robinson second half of the season. awful, 2 straight years now missing the tournament shouldn’t be acceptable to anyone.

    • mpbear14

It’s going to be 3 straight years

      • MGoTweeter

So we can expect a year off from you posting on here?

        • Ross

I like Belein as a person and had high hopes for this program after the back to back successful tournament runs, but the wheels have fallen off. I think that ultimately the problem lies in recruiting. The overall talent level just isn’t up to snuff. We look way too slow, even amongst our so-called best players – Zak Irvin, for example, cannot consistently beat anyone off the dribble. Same with Dawkins. Where is the top-level talent? I know we have missed out on some guys and had some bad luck with kids like Battle, etc., but why can’t we land the Robinsons and McGary’s again? No easy fix here, but if next season is anything like this one, it’s time to start over with a new coach.

          • malcolm bolt

Some of Beilein’s recruiting principles are him trying to be a MacGyver. He thinks he can take any clumsy dude and create a B1G champion. He had a great run but seems to be regressing to a mid major operation.

        • mpbear14

Clap clap clap. Everything is all good. Clap clap clap

    • malcolm bolt

I agree with some of your points, but the fan base is polarized between excuses and expectations.

    • MGoTweeter

Agree on the hot seat to a point. Whatever that means. My biggest issue is the defensive regression we are seeing over the last four or five years. They’ve never been great under beilein but they are getting worse and that isn’t related to just talent.

      • malcolm bolt

The defense is horrendous and it is pretty much known MI will struggle against physical and athletic squads (see Arizona last year, Michigan State, Indiana, SMU, UConn, the list goes on). The softness seems to be accepted and there is no adjustment in correcting it at all.

      • Steve2081

Yeah I agree totally Tweeter. I think our offensive struggles are understandable considering we lost an elite scorer and the most efficient PG in the league last year.

But the complete lack of progress on the defensive end is very alarming.

  • ToledoUMfan

Irvin is so limited, whether it’s the injury or simple lack of athletic ability, that he was just what the doctor ordered for Utoff and this Iowa team. Either way, he should not be playing that many minutes. I would of rather seen Chatman, Wagner or I guess anyone with any length against Utoff. His shots were uncontested all night!
