Coming off a closely-contested loss to No. 8 Maryland, the Michigan basketball team now has its back against the wall if it wants to make it into the NCAA Tournament. The next opportunity to pick up a much-needed win comes Wednesday, when Northwestern comes to Crisler Center.

Citing defense and two injured captains as obstacles that need to be overcome, Michigan coach John Beilein and juniors Zak Irvin, Derrick Walton Jr. and Mark Donnal discussed preparing for the Wildcats, Kam Chatman’s growth, shoring up on defense and more.

Beilein seems pretty frustrated about the defense. I think he realizes that some of the personnel just don’t have the talent to stay in front of players and his bench is not good enough to have them come off the bench to play defense. But, he has to be guarded about what he says publically.

Doesn’t bode well for the future.
