Michigan can’t have only 3 players play offense- Zak, Rahk and Robinson are the only ones making positive contribution.

    • mpbear14

Michigan can’t have zero guys playing defense. Zero guys rebounding.

It’s time to move the focus from offense to defense. We need to develop some type of defensive foundation.

      • MLaw

Don’t have to be elite defense or rebounding. Just better than this- even average defense and elite offense can be a viable championship team.

      • AAtoLA

Beilein doesn’t care about D…not his coaching core principle

        • MLaw

So sick of Beilein haters- He resurrected this program and took it to the championship game 4 years ago and elite 8 3 years ago. Give me a break.

          • AAtoLA

Yup. I was there for all those games cheering the team on…not hating bro…it’s just a fact. Coach is entirely an offensive minded coach…he places little emphasis on D…just a fact

          • MLaw

You don’t have a top 100 or even 75 D which they had those years without playing some defense. J-Mo was leaps and bounds better than anyone we have now. I agree the Bigs have big issues. That’s insulting to a man who has dedicated his life to the game and there are 3 other coaches who I’m sure know something about defense as well.

          • AAtoLA

Coach B’s system is lopsidedly offensively minded…compare the emphasis he places on offense vs defense and it’s 5:1. It’s just the truth man. Coach B will go down as a Michigan legend…He brought our program back to relevance…but doesn’t change how he prioritizes his system, recruiting, etc. You can’t deny that.

          • mpbear14

Michigan is a major university with an incredible amount of resources. Expectations don’t disappear once a final four is reached.

What has happened since the elite 8 appearance is unacceptable at Michigan.

          • Chezaroo

What have you done for me lately business. If you like the direction of this program, I’d respectfully have to disagree. We are not your average D1 institution. To many resources and facilities to recruit this bad.

          • MLaw

lately is not 1 year. I still think this year has a chance to squeek into the tournament. That is probably where we have to live for some time. You don’t get to be Duke or even MSU overnight…

  • AAtoLA

I hope J Poole isn’t watching this game…he’s the one recruit I’m super excited about.

    • bobohle

      Xavier Simpson also

    • Chezaroo

His recruitment is far from over.

      • AAtoLA

Yup…He is a difference maker with amazing upside…hope we can keep him.

  • Chezaroo

My goodness, how can a high major D1 team have a set of Bigs that are this limited?

    • mpbear14

      Recruiting. It’s been abysmal

  • Mike Bee

How many times has SMU thrown a lob or off a rebound and had multiple guys tip dunk it?

  • Vince

Don’t understand the knock on Irvin who is the only guy playing with any composure on offence and generating assists. Definitely not healthy and strength and shots not there.

Missing Walton and Spike not anywhere close to playing health is huge.

As much as I love the team and Coach I’m not able to pass the fact a D3 player is the best player we have tonight. And this is with us coming off a recent championship appearance and back to back big10 champs years. Definitely trending in a very bad way.

    • MLaw

To be fair- Robinson might be one of the better shooters in the country. Just a shooter, but I bet almost any team would find a spot for him now.

  • jblair52

How can Beilein be THAT bad of a defensive/rebounding coach? He looks totally clueless.

    • MLaw

Well he does have assistants… so I’m sure all 4 coaches are totally clueless about your brilliant idea of rebounding and defense. You better write them a letter…

      • jblair52

lol says the guy who claims Levert’s NBA hopes are shot after one game.

        • MLaw

Hey we are both overreacting. I know. We may both be frustrated with tonight’s performance I’m guessing. and I didn’t say over, just cost him some $$. which I do think it may have done so.

          • jblair52

I don’t mind losing but it’s HOW we lose. We play soft, weak, scared…get outrebounded. Let their backup throw down 10 dunks. I mean 5 would have been enough. If he insists on playing 4 guards then either get a better defensive center on your roster or make sure your 4 guards are scoring buckets.

  • andrew

I don’t know if people noticed, bu this was bad. That recent play where an SMu missed shote lead to two SMU guys trying to dunk while Zak and Duncan and basically Caris watched was not great. I realize that this game sucks, but my coaches would have been screaming at me for that kind of effort. I don’t know.

  • MGoTweeter

We’ll definitely regroup time and need to start thinking about other ways to play especially on d. Don’t have the personnel to go out and guard people on the perimeter. The 1-3-1 showed some promise late but who knows if that was for real. Rather see them take a Wisconsin approach to defense.

Offensively, don’t want to overreact to one game but definitely would like to see Irvin get more looks as the primary play maker. Besides Walton, he has the best vision and decision making with the ball. Like to see chatman and Wilson get some more minutes. I think they have potential to help on d. Probably means Dawkins sees his minutes go down as you can’t take Robinson off the floor.

Plenty of time for this team to figure it out before the big ten starts. Coaches have their hands full figuring this out.

  • bobohle

I’m afraid the 2 bigs coming next year are the same as what we have now.

    • moenice

Is there someone in Juco. Just an athlete who is tough and can jump. He doesn’t even have to score

      • bobohle

More like a 5th year transfer would be nice.

    • mpbear14

With the possibility they may be worse. I’ve seen Davis play multiple times and he has trouble getting up and down the court. He would have been a fish out of water against this level of competition.

    • MLaw

I Thought Teske was a top 100 player known for defense and shot blocking. That wrong?

      • bobohle

He don’t have the bulk yet for the BIG. He will get pushed around like Donnal and Wagner.

  • Mike Bee

Feels like years since the toughness of Novak or the dog of Burke

  • Burke_Does_Work

Never thought I’d say this, but we could really use Max Bielfeldt right now

  • andrew

I think the team looks like last year’s around this time…not very good. Coach B has to find some way to light a fire under these guys. Defense is as much about effort as schematics and speed. Wisconsin played okay D with some limted guys the past couple of years. He’s got to figure something out because he gets paid enough money to do it. I’m not jumping ship or anything, but it’d be two straight years of very poor performance. He’s got to find a way to get more out of these guys defensively. Shots will fall, but these guys looked like Fab 5 era Michigan dunking everything in sight.

  • andrew

I’m also hoping to see mor eWilson and Wagner. I think effort is there from Wagner and athleticism is there from Wilson. Michigan needs to ride those things hard. I’m not as sold on Irvin as the play maker, but I see what people are saying. Levert won’t have many nights like tonight. Again, shots will fall, but they have a long way to go on defense, and I don’t think hard hedging into a dunk-a-thon is the way to go. I like more of those two and then you have to get some guys to just play harder on defense. It may seem too simplistic, and in some ways it is, but you can’t be okay with your guy dunking and hitting threes on you. You have to not like that. I don’t think anyone on Michigan minds right now. That mindset has to change.

  • bobohle

Not closing the deal on our targeted elite recruits has a lot to do with this.

  • Vince

This is bad. No sugar coating it. But let’s face it we won’t win (m)any game shooting below 30% for 3s. We would have won tonight had it been 40% despite all the horrible defend end rebounding and toughness and recruiting and whatnot.

Live with the 3s, die with the 3s.
