Pregame Reading:

  • Cory

Have we seen DJ or Kam in the 2nd half?

    • Cory

      Nevermind…..

    • Kruser

      I don’t think so

    • MGoBlueAdam

I don’t really understand why Kam hasn’t played more. I didn’t think he played bad in the first half and certainly better than half the rest of these guys

  • Tony DeMaria

Nice little 21-9 Xavier run after Michigan got to within 2. Total domination on our home court

    • Chezaroo

All with Reynolds on the bench too

  • Burke_Does_Work

Stop recruiting “skilled” big men….we need an athletic beast to help us out on the boards and to protect the rim.

    • MGoTweeter

Would rather an athletic guard/wing that can guard the ball

    • Rich74

like Reynolds? who we never looked at.

      • They certainly looked at Reynolds, but there were reasons a look never turned into anything more.

        • Mattski

We saw some of them on display tonight.

          • mpbear14

LOL. I loved the way Reynold’s played. I loved when he flexed. He wasn’t scared of anyone. He played like he wanted to punish whoever was guarding him. Would love to have that on this team.

  • MGoTweeter

    Nice pass caris

  • Mattski

When you’re not hitting free throws, not hitting from outside, and not getting ANY rebounds, the Beilein philosophy looks a little bit tenuous.

    • jemblue

I think every philosophy looks bad when that happens.

  • A2inLA

    UConn game could get embarrassing….

    • Kruser

      WILL not could

  • Cory

We have been thoroughly embarrassed on our home court. I hope these kids are ready to work next week or we’re going to get beat up at Atlantis.

  • Welp, certainly a wakeup call. Xavier is a good team, but Michigan just has to play better defense. Brutal defensive performance.

    • Wayman Britt

Its okay for Beilein to recruit a couple of shooters, but he needs to get at least one tough physical player in each class

  • MGoTweeter

This game was all about the Xavier guard/wings dominating the Michigan guard/wings.

    • MAZS

with our centers getting 2 total boards?

      • MGoTweeter

No chance to get boards when they are throwing their bodies constantly at drivers who beat our wings guards clean off the bounce

        • MAZS

Yea sure that was the reason. Not defending the wing either, but they will be better. The 5 hole–far bigger question mark. Doyle is literally the slowest jumper in America–even then, he is markedly better than Donnal.

  • MGoTweeter

    Nice box out walton

  • bobohle

We can’t guard the three, the sea parts when Xavier drives the basket, and don’t have a power six center. Bluiett embarrases us also.

  • A2inLA

Back to being an unranked team this week…got thoroughly out beasted…

  • Mattski

Got to admire this Xavier team.

  • Chezaroo

    20 offensive rebounds for Xavier?

  • MGoTweeter

My gosh this was worse than the njit game. At least that game Michigan lost thanks to some ridiculous shooting from the other team. The Michigan team that showed up tonight won’t win more than four games in the big ten. Ofcourse the big ten scores tonight look pretty bad across the board

    • bobohle

Except Sparty won by over 25pts

      • MGoTweeter

        Against?

  • mpbear14

This is why missing on plan A and B recruits hurts. We do not have the athletes to match a team like Xavier.

    • A2inLA

      because Sparty took them all…

      • mpbear14

        Sparty will wax this team.

  • jemblue

Blaming it all on recruiting is a cop out. You do not have to be full of 5-star guys to be able to box out and hustle on the defensive glass. We simply didn’t compete tonight.

    • A2inLA

Agreed. We didn’t want to win as badly as X…and this was at home for us…they wanted it more…

      • Mattski

Maybe, but Doyle–our best big–was utterly ineffectual. And I don’t think Davis and Teske are likely to provide the answers to a team like Xavier.

      • mpbear14

“They wanted it more” is a cop out. Face reality, they are a better team right now. They are more athletic, physical and play much better on the ball defense than we are capable of.

        • A2inLA

Not really. Boxing out is want-to…they wanted it more than us.

          • mpbear14

If it were only that simple…

          • A2inLA

            In this case, it is.

    • mpbear14

We don’t have the athletes, plain and simple. It’s not that Donnal didn’t want to rebound or he wasn’t trying to box out, it’s that he couldn’t. Xavier was too strong and athletic for him.

Same can be said about Wilson, Doyle and Wagner.

      • jemblue

The entire team was bad at boxing out and winning 50-50 balls, not just the bigs. It was simply a poor teamwide effort.

  • Mattski

Fascinating how a game that was close until midway through the second half still feels like a royal whipping, but it definitely does.

  • Spike

Mbarrising. Very bad defensive team. 2 rebounds between doyle and donnal. Same old same old.

    • gobluemd16

TWO total DEFENSIVE rebounds by all of the four centers combined. Donnal, Doyle, Wagner, DJ. That is embarrassing. Walton is our best rebounder. Completely outhusted and outworked, that shouldn’t happen no matter the number of stars next to your name.

      • gobluemd16

They are also outmatched physically, but the effort on 50/50 balls at home is just a bad, bad sign.

  • Cory

    BEAT PENN STATE!!!!

  • Alex

This was certainly not a great performance but as we’ve seen with football and our past few basketball teams it’s not how you start. It’s how you finish. It’s a long season and as long as they get better every day this team can make some noise. Also remember State embarrassed us that one time by 30 points or so at the Breslin Center. I believe that team was a lot better than that performance.

    Go Blue.

  • MAZS

Oh boy, we get Seth Davis next game as well. He was beyond awful. Did he do any prep? Then again it wasn’t a ACC game.

  • A2inLA

We can gain 20 lbs of muscle at camp Sanderson but can we have that translate into more toughness and grit as well?

    • Indiana_Matt

I think it will with time. I hope so anyway.

  • MGoTweeter

Haha. I like all these state fans showing up after the game to post pretending to be Michigan fans. They will be the same ones whining tomorrow about being called little brother. Strange

  • jemblue

I remember the game before that epic Breslin win in 2011, against Minnesota, we were absolutely thrashed on the glass, like 36-12. That was rock bottom and we never again had an effort that terrible the rest of the way. Let’s hope this is the same.

    • MGoTweeter

Yea jem. Wish we could look at the Umhoops archive because I went crazy after that game. Was a definite low point in terms of effort

  • Burke_Does_Work

I think you have to realize that out of all of our bigs (Doyle, Wagner, Wilson, Donnal), only Doyle is a true center, and a below average one at that. The others are stretch fours that are being forced into the 5 spot. How can we expect to compete against other team’s traditional fives? It’s simply bad recruiting on Beilein’s part and a one of my biggest gripes with his offensive philosophy.

    • MGoTweeter

I agree that the fives are not great right now but they had no chance at success tonight. Michigander guards/wings got beat so cleanly off the dribble that the bigs were stuck over helping like crazy. Then Michigan went zone and the wings decided they didn’t need to help on the boards.

    • gobluemd16

this is a very good point

  • John miller

It’s a damn shame donnal still owns a Michigan jersey. From the first play of the game, a damn shame.

    • MGoTweeter

Cmon now he did earn that scholly and has given it his all. So he deserves his spot on the team. Whether he deserves his minutes is another story

      • John miller

Nothing Is worse than beilein still running him out there. Xavier clearly knew he would get blown away and 10 seconds in they got an and 1. It’s such s shame. If they all suck, play the ones that at least have potential. I haven’t seen in 3 games one reason donnal is ever on the floor.

        • stopsayingartofpitching

John, that’s verbatim what I was thinking. While I’m sure he’s giving his all, it makes little sense for him to only see the court for making fouls to get the opposing team into the bonus in late-game situations. I don’t know how it’s possible, but his game has actually regressed from last year. Scares me if Doyle and Wilson get into early foul trouble.

  • DetroitDan

We hung with Xavier for most of the game, before it all fell apart down the stretch. Great game by the Musketeers.

For starters, I think we learned a bit about the rotation. Chatman and Donnal are out. MAAR should be in. Wings and bigs have to box out. Coaches have some work to do.

Walton, Irvin, Doyle, and Dawkins were much worse than anticipated. Problem is with team chemistry. Need some players who do the dirty work. Who are the candidates for the this? Wilson, MAAR, Albrecht, Walton, Wagner come to mind. We can afford to be more chippy on defense.

Our shooters will do better on average. That is our strength, and occasionally they won’t connect.

    • MGoTweeter

Some good points in there. Definitely need some dirty work players

    • John miller

Shot great as a team. Playing 12 players is a mistake and playing donnal even a minute is a bigger mistake.

  • Indiana_Matt

Xavier’s top big men were a junior and a senior. I think age and experience makes a big difference with inside play in college basketball. Our experienced players happen to be on the perimeter rather than down low. We got manhandled and even our better players made mental errors that hurt us. Don’t understand the lack of boxouts. I think (and hope) this was a painful game that will work to the advantage of bringing some focus and desire to the ball club. They are good, smart kids. Let’s get better every game. I can handle a good beating in November… if it prevents one in January. Hopefully we don’t experience both!
