Introducing Zach Shaw

Hi everyone,

I’m looking forward to a fantastic year with UM Hoops! I’ve enjoyed the coverage Dylan, Dustin, Joe and Alejandro have brought for years now, and it’s an honor to join the team and be a part of the site’s continued development.

My role will grow closer to the season, but with Big Ten Media Day on Thursday and the season just around the corner, I wanted to introduce myself and my goals for the year.

I’m currently a senior at Michigan in the business school set to graduate in May. I’ve tried my hand at various consulting and marketing jobs, but my heart has always been in sports journalism. On campus, I’ve been a writer for The Michigan Daily for the past three years, where I have served as baseball and hockey beat writers and am currently serving as a football beat writer and senior sports editor.

I hope to carry the skills I developed at the Daily with me to UM Hoops. In addition to day-to-day coverage of the team, I hope to produce regular longform content that dives deeper into the stories of the team.

In addition to the Daily, I have spent the last two years as an executive member of WCBN, Michigan’s student radio station. There, I broadcasted nearly 100 games (including dozens of basketball games) and host a weekly radio show. Due to this experience, I plan to bring back the UM Hoops podcasts started by Daily and UM Hoops alum Joe Stapleton.

Outside the press box, I have been a Michigan fan my whole life. I was born and raised in Ann Arbor (I even followed Joe’s footsteps at Community High School’s sports section), and have been going to football, basketball, hockey and baseball games for as long as I can remember. I still remember sprinting the halls of Crisler with my friends as a kid while we cleaned up after games to raise funds for our baseball team. More recently, my Michigan snuggie and I were Maize Rage regulars in the team’s Final Four run my freshman year at Michigan.

Through the years, my passion for Michigan basketball has never wavered, and I’m thrilled to join a community that feels the same way. If you ever want to discuss Michigan sports, Ann Arbor or anything else, contact me at zachshaw@umich.edu or on Twitter at @_ZachShaw.

Again, it’s an honor to join the UM Hoops team and be a part of this community. Alejandro and Joe left a lot to learn from, and I can’t wait to get started.
