Michigan ranked preseason No. 22 by Athlon Sports

Dylan Burkhardt

The Athlon Sports college basketball preview magazine hits newsstands this week and Michigan cracked the preseason top 25.  Athlon ranked Michigan 22nd in the country, writing that the Wolverines were set for a return from last season’s disappointing year.

“After last year’s debacle, Michigan ready for healthy seasons from Caris LeVert and Derrick Walton … and a return to form,” Athlon wrote.

Caris LeVert is featured on the Michigan regional cover along with Michigan State’s Denzel Valentine. Michigan is picked to finish sixth in the Big Ten behind Maryland, Michigan State, Purdue, Indiana and Wisconsin.

Maryland is ranked preseason No. 4, Michigan State checks in at No. 12, Purdue is No. 16, Indiana is No. 17 and Wisconsin is No. 18. You can find the full Athlon top 25 here.

Michigan was not ranked by Lindy’s Sports, the first preseason magazine to be unveiled this offseason, but was picked to finish fifth in the Big Ten.

Finally some preseason respect. I can’t see us finishing behind Wisconsin and Purdue though. Finishing ahead of Indiana a good possibility. If our bigs have improved and we stay healthy for the most part,we should be good no doubt about it.

I don’t really see Wisconsin finishing ahead of us, but with everything Bo has done for Wisconsin basketball he deserves the respect his team is getting.

Well with UM striking out on so many high level recruits, looks like we will turn into Wisconsin. Just have to rely on excellent coaching and keep getting non- all americans and turning them into team players. I think that 18 year olds just think that Beilien is going to make them go to class and be responsible men and won’t let outside influences into the program.

I feel your frustration along with everyone else. I still believe the day will come when we close the deal on a top recruit. I thought it happened with Battle. One of these guys will follow the McGary decision and choose Michigan and others will follow. That is a no brainer to us. I guess it’s a tougher choice for the McD all americans. Too many outside influences get in the way.
