on

Michigan and Michigan State resume their rivalry this afternoon in East Lansing. The Wolverines have won six of the last nine, but will have a shorthanded roster. Caris LeVert is still sidelined while Derrick Walton continues to battle foot and toe injuries and is questionable after missing Michigan’s game on Tuesday.

Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. on CBS and you can join the open thread below before, during and after the game.

    Terrible decision….just very terrible

  • Dustin Stone

Cause thats the shot we wanted…

  • MGoTweeter

makethese max and get a stop

  • Tony DeMaria

Love these improbable late game comebacks, but the crushing OT periods hurt just as much as the ends of regulations are awesome.

  • Tony DeMaria

    Of course he misses

  • jblair52

WTF?! You can’t kick at players…T him up

  • Dustin Stone

Lets make sure we never go to overtime for the rest of the season…

  • MLaw

Does this mean we get to win all OT next year?

  • Tony DeMaria

We’re going to be shut out in OT aren’t we?

  • pete

i like Max’s effort but he needs to know his limitations.

  • Tony DeMaria

That’s just about game. 5 points in a minute possible. 7-8 points down with a minute left = nearly impossible

  • MGoTweeter

jees getting some decent shots just missing

  • Chris De Sana

Costello has been huge for MSU with 3 blocks at the rim and solid from the FT line

  • Tony DeMaria

MSU has scored on 4 of their 5 OT possessions, UM 0-4 I believe

  • Burke_Does_Work

I can’t wait till Dawson is gone.

  • jblair52

Irvin got blocked 4 times this game alone. unbelievable.

    • Tony DeMaria

Irvin is just not that good. He doesn’t shoot well like he’s supposed to, he doesn’t create plays, he has a slow release that allows for his shots to get blocked, unmemorable on defense. Just a disappointing player overall IMO.

He reminds me of Courtney Sims…not in terms of style (at all) but in terms of being soft and not doing the things you’d expect him to do. He will get decent numbers but not look good getting them.

      • Mattski

Get out there and replace him; we’re down a few guys.

        • Tony DeMaria

Hah, I didn’t say we necessarily had better options, just that I expected more from him coming into UM. Really since the great recruiting class 3 years ago the highly regarded recruits that Beilein has brought in have been disappointing besides Walton. I think Irvin, Donnel and Chatman were the other top 100 guys.

          • Mattski

            Don’t write him off yet.

        • MAZS

Agree. The bashing of players here is making the site unreadable at times. I know I stay away sometimes after games because of the harshness of the criticisms from people who are….well you all know the internet. Briefly on Irvin. He can shoot. We know that because we saw it all last year. But getting his shot has become much harder. You can’t believe Beilein is a great coach and then constantly disparage the players he recruits and chooses to give 35 minutes a game to. We just went into overtime with yet another team far more experienced (if not talented) than ours–playing Andrew Dakich for 15 minutes. Irvin will be spectacularly better than Courtney Sims before he leaves Ann Arbor.

      • psickert1

He isn’t a bad player at all… he just has to work on his game more. I think the added weight kind of affected his jumper

    • psickert1

      Yes, very unbelievable.

  • Tony DeMaria

Are you kidding me Irvin? You thought that was a great idea?

Geez, I am just not a big fan of Irvin at all…..

  • Chris De Sana

Tough to win in OT when you go 0 for……

  • MLaw

Wow. Well it’s been real. I hate everything. We can’t sustain this level the rest of the season.

    • MGoTweeter

      why not?

  • pete

wth? we had a fast break there stopped by the refs?

    • jblair52

They had to add those important 0.3 seconds on the clock…sheesh

  • MLaw

Taunting us for taking them to overtime…. rivalries are something alright.

  • JayBilas

MSU shouldn’t celebrate anything. They should be embarrassed they were taken to OT. They’re beating a UM team made up mostly of freshman, 3-star guys, missing two starters because of injury. This is a win by one NIT-caliber team over another.

    • Joel_C

i think MSU will squeak in as like an 11-seed or something

      • JohnNavarreIsMyHero

They have a rough schedule towards the end. I think they miss the tournament entirely like they should have in 2011.

  • Burke_Does_Work

I just want to score in OT

  • jblair52

    Chatman. Why?

  • pete

irvin showed a little bit more this game. some steals, good passes and a few takes to the rim. unfortunately, he needs to go up stronger and avoid getting blocked. MAAR already has that ability! a great game by that freshman!

  • jemblue

Ugh, looks like we had nothing left in the tank for OT. Still incredibly proud of this effort.

  • Chris De Sana

Don’t agree with the Irvin transfer or bashng, he may not ever have the trajectory of improvement as some
others but he is a solid BIG10 player with obvious limitations.

    • Indiana_Matt

Irving bashing is unnecessary. And I agree he is a solid B1G player. And I agree that a lot of sophomores in America have obvious limitations.

      • Tony DeMaria

The guy who is billed as being a plus shooter is shooting 39% from the field overall. It’s not like he’s particularly solid in other areas either…4 rebounds, 1 assist per game, unremarkable defense.

I will bite my tongue if the difference from last year ends up being wrist injury, but I’m willing to bet its because he doesn’t have guys like Stauskas or GR3 to take the attention off of him, and he’s just not a great primary option.

        • Chris De Sana

Probably fair comments, not every recruit is able to transition from a bit player to a head liner so maybe that is the case with Irvin. On the other hand it appears MAAR and Dawkins have that desire and potential talent. If nothing else they sure appear to be fearless which is half the battle.

  • MLaw

I just hope these kids can keep there heads up the rest of the season. If we make the NIT I will still feel like next season has a lot of potential.

  • Burke_Does_Work

I knew we should’ve gone for the win at the end of regulation…I’d live with a missed 3 tbh…we don’t have the depth to beat teams away from home in OT

  • psickert1

Good game guys tough loss. WE showed some heart.

  • MGoTweeter

great effort today just couldnt finish a couple plays. this team is really improving at a fast rate. still time to make something big of thos season

  • Tony DeMaria

Gottleb was right? Blowout (double digit) loss :(

    • MLaw

      Screw Gottlieb.

    • Indiana_Matt

Losing by 10 is not a blowout.

      • Tony DeMaria

I’m just making light of his prediction.

  • Burke_Does_Work

Not scoring in OT is embarassing

    • MLaw

Making OT is not at all. A loss is a loss.

    • Mattski

You go ahead and be embarrassed, then. I’ll choose to be pretty proud of this team.

  • jblair52

    I hate Izzo

  • Indiana_Matt

It has taken everything for MSU to beat us at their place in OT and we are playing 2 star recruits, walk-ons and banged up sick guys. I know we aren’t into moral victories, but the Spartans should be ashamed of themselves and that makes me happy.

And we have an amazing coaching staff and I don’t know how anyone could say different.

    • JohnNavarreIsMyHero

I personally guarantee we will win in Ann Arbor.

  • Tony DeMaria

OK I’ll take another moral loss but the next time I’m going to complain!

  • Tony DeMaria

Outscored 22-7 in the last 2 OT periods

    • jemblue

Not that surprising – we don’t have the depth to go another 5 minutes in a competitive game.

    • Indiana_Matt

Astounding to me that we got to those two overtime periods.

  • JimC

That was disappointing, but entertaining. OK, back to the blizzard.

  • Chris De Sana

We seemed to really struggle when we went away form running the offense through MAAR, as mentioned b 4 he is the only true dual threat that can hit the jumper or drive it to the basket and finish. I think Dawkins will get there eventually as well eventually. But multiple trips with no MAAR touches was a huge reason for 5 straight trips late the game without a point scored.

    • MGoTweeter

I was also confused by this, really went away from Rahk late. I think some of that was Spike made a couple plays and they liked that matchup, but would have rather they get the ball into Rahk’s hands more in Ot.

  • MAZS

I know this is entirely self-serving and I’m sure it appears to be after-the-fact, but we should have gone for the 3 at the end of regulation. On the road, with a decimated team–you go for the win. That said, I on bended knee to Beilein’s genius and this team’s heart.

    • MGoTweeter

less time left, I agree with you. But with thirty seconds, I think you try to score two quick and give yourself multiple opportunities if you miss by fouling again. If It had been like 15 seconds or less, I would have said go for the win.

      • Tony DeMaria

yeah i think that is the difference. Michigan could go for the more challenging 3, but if they make it MSU still has a shot to win it with plenty of time. If you run down the clock and shoot a 3, you are limiting your ability to have a potential second chance at tying the game because there’s no time left to foul.

      • MAZS

Oh I agree 99% of the time–when the skill sets and our scoring options are better. Both here and Wisconsin confirm that we are at a disadvantage the longer the game goes. I trust Beilein to script a 3 point play. It needn’t be at the very end of the clock–leaving time to foul if its missed. As it was, MSU got the last shot in regulation–and overtime wasn’t likely to be friendly on the road with an inexperienced team.

  • jr_ewing93

Everyone that’s bashing Irvin probably can’t even play

    • Tony DeMaria

I didn’t realize you had to be a great basketball player to have an opinion.

      • jr_ewing93

No you all don’t if you have to call players soft

  • jr_ewing93

I see my true fake Michigan fans

    • rlcBlue

What a season this has turned into.

  • Joel_C

well I tried to post a comment but it looks like it didn’t take, so I’ll paraphrase:

This was basically the Wisconsin game again, but I’m seriously proud of this team with the way they battled, their ranks depleted & in a hostile environment. Even if it’s an NIT year, we’re giving everything we’ve got.

    • jemblue

I thought Wisconsin was flukier than this. We were down almost all of that game, including by 11 points. This one was back-and-forth all second half. We gave them all they could handle – and without Walton this time.
