Michigan and Duke tip-off in primetime tonight at 9:15 p.m. (ESPN) from Cameron Indoor Stadium. A win over the Blue Devils would be the Wolverines’ first since a 2008 victory at Crisler Arena.

Dick Vitale and Dan Shulman will be on the call for ESPN with Jeff Goodman handling sideline reporting duties. The latest word on Nik Stauskas is that he should play.

maybe the ankle is bothering Nik Stauskas, Dickie V?? maybe??

  • Joel_C

We should just always play like we’re down 15 with a minute left

    • Scott Kremkow

our opponents should defend us always like they are up 15 with a minute to go.

      • Joel_C

        Right….just wanna see a little more energy/urgency I guess

I take back what I said earlier. The Levert, Stauskaus, Robinson, Irvin McGary lineup is the one to go with. Give Levert more looks. He needs to pass the ball better, and I think putting him in more pick and roll with chances may help him start seeing the court. You mix and match from there. As it is, all of JB’s recent good teams have had a good lead guard who creates open looks. Levert, I guess, is that guy.

  • Joel_C

Quinn Cook seems like a good guy….gave us a shoutout for making the championship game last year ha

  • Chris De Sana

This game exposed our obvious short comings, lack of experience and production from the point no matter if it is Walton or Spike as well as the continued lackluster effort of GR3. Our success going forward will be determined on our ability to change them all.

Does it start by changing the starting line up? GR3 comes off the bench? Caris starts at the point?

    Should be interesting to follow.

  • guestavo

Minnesota, Iowa and Indiana might be better than us, as well. We need to grow up and adjust quickly. Not sure why people think that Arizona game will be closer. They’re FSU on steroids.

  • Duberstein

I bet Robinson and Mitch are regretting not going pro.

  • Ben

GR3 needs to refocus. I think he has got so focused on the NBA he forgot he has to play college right now.

    • Duberstein

If he doesn’t wake up soon, those thoughts will merely be idle dreams.

      • Indiana_Matt

We should remember that he’s 8 games into his sophomore year. While he may need more development, I don’t think we should throw in the towel yet on his pro dreams.

    • Indiana_Matt

I think he has put too much pressure on himself due to the projections. I hope he gets his head right. Obviously good kid, hard worker.

    • Dr_ZC

      NBA? Can you spell “DARIUS”?

  • Burke_Does_Work

To all the people saying Mitch is not playing well, you gotta realize how hard it is for him to be productive when no one passes him the ball. He did take some poor shots earlier in the game, but if Caris looks for him more on the PnR (similar to what Trey did in the tourney last season), he can score 15-20 on any given night.

    • guestavo

With Walton/Spike on the floor, Caris doesn’t get enough reps. We have to commit to him at the lead guard and Spike might have to get his minutes cut…

    • Joel_C

That possession where Stauskas jacked up that 3 especially, McGary should’ve got the ball (among others)

    • Duberstein

He really doesn’t impress me. He gives it his all and he shows some dribbling ability, but he’s also 21 year old. I think this is often forgotten. He at least 2 years older than the rest of his competition.

      • Burke_Does_Work

What does his age have to do with anything but his draft stock? If you’re in college, you are expected to play against other college players regardless of how old they are.. Same way in the pros.

        • Kam

Look I’m a caris fan and i agree he has to look for him more, BUT mitch has no post game so his only offense is gonna be pick and roll and rebounds

          • Burke_Does_Work

Agreed…but they need to target him on the PnR more. Caris just tries to lay it in (it started to work at the end, but in the beginning of the game, he missed a lot of layups), rather than pass to Mitch for an easier shot.

          • Kam

very true, he needs to find a good in between amount. Find mitch and attack for himself!

          • Ben

            And faceup

        • Duberstein

If he were a senior, which he should be, he would not have been given All American consideration. Much of our perception of players’ ability is a reflection of potential rather than past accomplishments. Relative to his age, he is not very impressive.

          • Burke_Does_Work

Compare him to Morgan (who is probably 22 maybe 23), and you will see a big improvement. Plus he doesn’t have the same college experience as a senior, so it’s not fair to judge him on his age when he’s barely into his sophomore season.

  • Ben

Mitch is fine. He has had 6 practices and 5 games he was out of shape for. Anyone who has played basketball knows how difficult it can be to do what you want when you are out of shape.

    • Kam

Yes but being in shape has nothing to do with a post game. I think its more tem chemistry.. U can be out of shape and work in the post. He just doesnt have a post game. We heard all summer the improved jumper and he has tried it this year and made a few. I think thats his major improvement. Not post game

      • Ben

True about the post game which he clearly doesn’t have, but being tired definitely affects jumps shots (at least for me). I think its a team chemistry thing for sure though.

  • MLaw

Can’t believe people think Mitch was the problem when he was 6-10 shooting 14 Rebs and made 3-4 FTs. He had a great game and looks like he is ready to go this season. Not perfect but still pretty good.

    • Kam

Glenn is the problem. Nik couldn’t do anything.. people just expected Mitch to be AMAZINGGGG when hes just a good player

    • Duberstein

I wasn’t making this commentary with this game specifically in mind. It’s just what I’ve observed over the course of his career. As has been mentioned, his post game is pretty weak and he has yet to show he can dominant a game or carry a team. I just think he has been overpraised, not that he can’t improve.

      • MLaw

I don’t disagree with you. He isn’t a true post player despite what every single announcer says about him. That is fine. We are not a smash mouth team. I just feel like people have an expectation that Mitch is the second coming of Derrick Nix. Which he just isn’t. He is more Kevin Love lite.

        • Duberstein

How lite is lite? Love is one of the better players in the NBA, and has the ability to knock down tres with the best of ’em. Mitch has boarding ability sure, but his shooting ability cannot even be compared to Love’s, which is what makes Love such an imposing foe on offense. In my opinion, McGary would be lucky to last 5 years in the league, unless he shows dramatic improvement on offense and in a hurry.

          • MLaw

Love Jr? uhhh much less. Like 50%. He isn’t really a pro player long term and should have gone pro probably especially being old.

          • Duberstein

I have confidence in Stauskas though. I can truly see him making an impact at the next level. His ability to shoot, drive, and he’s tall enough to be a 2. Out of this era’s bunch I could see him having the most success. I do typically speak from my hind parts, but I have confidence in this toot.

  • pgrom

this could be a 9-9 Big Ten team this year. I hope not, but there are early signs that it could be.

    • countourzealous

It’s early. These are tough losses, but did you really expect a win at Duke when they haven’t lost a non-conference game there since 2000?

Tough start, but as long as this team learns from these games we’ll be okay. Don’t forget, the real season starts in March.
