Video: Michigan’s first basketball practice of 2013-14

Cameras and camcorders were allowed inside the Crisler Center on Friday afternoon as Michigan held its first basketball practice of the 2013-14 season. Mitch McGary sat out with a back injury but footage includes shots of freshmen Mark Donnal, Zak Irvin, Derrick Walton and the rest of the 2013-14 Wolverines.

What do you guys think of having so many freshman walk-ons? Dakich, Cole McConnell, and the new guy Sean I believe.

    • Fresh

it is just one of those things that it happens to work out that way…….in a couple years if they all stay with the team it is going to be a great thing

    • Northern Blue

Coach B loves his walk ons. Levert got a whole lot bigger. Looks like more of a 3 than a 2 now. Donnal can shoot, and while he may not get a ton of playing time this year, I could see him playing a Smotrycz role at a higher level at the 4 and 5 down the road. Year of training room will do him wonders. If he does play this year then look for GR3 to be beasting at the 3.

Walton can shoot. Looks like a bigger, stronger team than last year going off first impression.

    • Pretty much had to add them with only 11 players on scholarship. Would like to have some more experienced walk-ons though definitely. Beilein praised last year’s group so often.

It’s too bad Sai Tummala didn’t stick around. He would’ve been useful.

        • He’s actually on scholarship at Arizona State after a year of JuCo I believe.

  • Wayman Britt

Love to see Beilein’ team working on fundamentals. If you join UM, Beilein will improve your game and help you develop for the next level. But, it takes a special player who wants to develop their fundamentals, not for every recruit.

  • Champswest

Donnal looks bigger (thicker and stronger) than what I saw in his videos. Looks like he has the body to compete this year. Bielfeldt looks slimmed down, quicker.

  • geoffclarke

    Love the defensive transition drills.

  • Scott Johnson

Makes me even more excited for the upcoming season.

  • Retiredat23

    Great stuff guys

  • Giebz

Does anyone know what is the goal of the defensive drill they were doing at the end? I get that they are closing out on the shooter as fast as possible, but then the assistants were rolling the ball on the floor slowly and the player was shuffling in front of it. I can’t figure out what that second part is for.

    • kam

Basically its just being about to follow the ball while shuffling.. nothing complicated.. I did it back in high school! It works on being quicker on defense. If u watch it again pay attention to who shuffles the fastest and looks the smoothest, normally it means they are good at moving their feet!
