Game 13: Central Michigan at Michigan Open Thread

Dylan Burkhardt

Michigan 79, NC State 72 - #7
Dustin Johnston

After over a week off during the holidays, Michigan takes the court again this evening to wrap up its non-conference schedule against visiting Central Michigan. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m. eastern with Greg Kelser and Justin Kutcher handling broadcasting duties for the Big Ten Network.

The big news tonight is that Tim Hardaway Jr. is not dressed tonight due to an ankle injury. Per Matt Shepard, Caris LeVert will start in Hardaway’s place.

    Lets Go Blue!

  • Tim Hardaway Jr. is out with an ankle injury tonight.

  • Chris

Do you know how serious the ankle injury is?

  • Caris LeVert is expected to start in Hardaway’s place.

  • Steve2081

43 points 9 rebounds and 3 assists in a loss
for Kennard today. I didn’t get to see it though. Forgot to account for the
    stupid Eastern time zone!

  • Steve2081

    Anyone got a stream?

  • Trey Burke with 7 early points and three assists. He’s essentially unguardable.

  • Cory R

What the hell is Eso doing in there this early?

    • No Hardaway at the two. LeVert starting, Akunne backing him up.

  • DB

I would like to see them give the two PG lineup a bit of a run this game.

  • DB

Lineup is now Burke, Eso, Vogrich, McGary, and Morgan. Ooookay

  • Hops

Why does Akunne shoot off every touch? Why is he even in? So many questions.

  • Caris LeVert can play a bit. Three assists in his first shift and a three.. now he checks back in and takes it coast to coast with a nifty spin and finish.

  • Steve2081

That was a pretty take by Caris!

  • eddieben

Caris Levert=Jamal Crawford in his brief stint at UM. Baby face, decent long limb handle, and ability to get off his own shot.

    • A2JD

Poor man’s Jamal. Crawford was electric here in a few games.

  • DB

Stauskas hasn’t put up a 3 yet, but he has 6 rebounds.

  • Stauskas with five defensive rebounds already. Picking up some of the slack with Hardaway out.

  • Mattski

Levert looking good! Loved how aggressive Spike was there, too. We need Hardaway, but this is a great chance to see what some other players and player combos can do.

  • Steve2081

Nick has to clean up the showtime crap just a little bit.

  • Michigan leads 46-29 at the break.

    U-M 1.39 PPP, CMU .86 PPP
    Michigan: 63% eFG%, 6% TO Rate, 31% OR Rate, 9% FTA/FGA
    CMU: 42% eFG%, 24% TO Rate, 35% OR Rate, 6% FTA/FGA

  • A2JD

Trey is just playing at another level right now. Caris looks great. GR III is playing smart.

Sidenote: Has Nikki Buckets even shot the ball?

  • Love the Blue

Levert is showing that we do have the bench needed to fill in on off night for the starters (or injury in this case). Will the growing role for Levert take away the few remaining minutes that Vogrich is getting? Could Levert spell Hardaway and Stauskas?

    • Vogrich hasn’t really played in recent games and LeVert has been backing up both positions already. Don’t see that changing. Vogrich has just gotten some run tonight with Hardaway out (same w/ Akunne).

  • Stauskas goes without a three in the first half and already has three triples in the second.

  • Bigrange4

Glenn has had a couple highlight dunks. Love it that we can play like this even with Hardaway sidelined.

  • It should be a shock to watch a guy hit five straight threes. Not even that surprised as Stauskas does it tonight.

  • Mattski

WTH happened to McGary there? Was like his GPS malfunctioned. . .

  • MGoTweeter

Looks like both teams forgot how to play defense over Christmas. This is glorified pick up ball tonight.

It is great to see levert keep up the strong play

  • mfan

good offensive but Central Michigan seems to be getting a lot of points close to the basket

  • DeepBlue83

Interior defense is still a big concern. Central is getting easy chances inside over and over and over. And this team seems to relax and be content to trade baskets when they get up by about 20. It would be nice to see a little more intensity for 40 minutes.

  • Mattski

Nice piece about Darius someone just posted at mgoblog:,0,6684149.story

Anyone who still thinks he made a mistake is crackers.

  • Mattski

Our interior D and susceptibility to dribble penetration are going to haunt us a little.

    • DeepBlue83

Quite a bit in the Big Ten, that’s for sure. One area where our freshmen really have not come around is defense.

  • Michigan wins 88-73 and completes the undefeated non-conference slate. Stay tuned for post-game coverage to follow.

  • DeepBlue83

Kind of a meh game against a team with no real talent. That level of play won’t get us far in the Big Ten. That kind of defense will get shredded against a decent team.
