ESPN: Mitch McGary Cancels Future Visits, Plans Decision

Dylan Burkhardt

mitch-mcgary-rivals[1]ESPN High School posted Mitch McGary’s latest blog update late Sunday evening. The blog details McGary’s life at Brewster, favorite music and also updates some very notable events in his recruitment. The notable developments:

  1. McGary hasn’t committed anywhere.
  2. He has cancelled all future visits, including Kentucky’s Midnight Madness.
  3. He plans to make his college decision within the next month.
  4. He reports that Duke has been up to see him the most, with Michigan next.

The full blog is definitely worth a read, as McGary discusses every school on his list, but here are the relevant Michigan quotes:

As far as more visits, I don’t think I’ll be making any. I’m not gonna go to Kentucky’s Midnight Madness, I feel like I have all the information that I need to start to think about a decision. Within the next month I hope to have a decision made.

Then you’ve got Michigan. I look at who they’ve got coming in and I know they’re in a rebuilding situation, but I know that’s a situation where I could really come in and make a strong footprint. I feel like I could really help them and have a strong season there as a freshman. I like the Big Ten because it’s known for having blue-collar type players, but the pace tends to be a little slower. I love to go to work in the paint, but I like to get out and run more so with Michigan that’s something that I’ll have to really look at.

Really tough to judge anything based off these blog posts. I thought he would narrow it down a little bit with this one, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Kentucky appears to be out of the running, and Duke, Michigan, and UNC appear to be the most likely options at this point, but he continues to keep it very close to chest. I wouldn’t say this one was exactly positive for Michigan, he points out that he feels the Big Ten doesn’t run as much and he really stresses that he would like to run. We’ll just have to wait and see.

It is blue or blue devils, but his blog sounds more positive on the latter.

  • It’s worth noting that there are a number of strong and relatively credible rumors out there about Michigan being in a great position. Evan Daniels posted a premium tidbit on the national site (if you subscribe: and Jody Demling shared a bit of that today.

    It’s time to buckle up.

Objectively if was a Duke fan and read that blog, I would feel UM was out of the running. He reiterated the fact he wants to run more than a Big Ten will.
I hope it was just a smokescreen!

I suspect that all these rumors come from a single source and I wonder what it is.

Insider information also had Trey Zeigler as a strong Michigan lean, so I’m not holding my breath. (Then again, McGary’s dad isn’t one of the people recruiting him)

If I’m McGary and know that I’m only playing one year in all likelihood, then I’m gonna go play ball with one of my best friends (GRIII) and have a blast. No doubt about it.

You just have to think it’s Duke at this point. Either way, I’m impressed we’ve put our self in the position to compete with Duke and UNC for talent.

That’s nice but that doesn’t really do much for me.  This is Michigan and we should be right there with those schools.  SIGNING an impact player of Mitch’s caliber shows that we are back on the map as a national power like we were (for the most part) in the mid-60’s to the mid-to-late 90’s.

You’re right… this is Michigan where we hadn’t made the NCAA tournament in a decade.  This is Michigan where NCAA sanctions and incompetent coaches doomed us for nearly two decades.  This is Michigan which is to say we’re not Michigan State in basketball.  Seriously, where have you been for the last 10 years?

This ain’t Michigan Football and having our basketball team mentioned in the same breath as Duke and UNC most certainly IS impressive.  We all want to land him and there is no 2nd place here, but let’s have realistic expectations.

Preach it, brother. You’re spot on.

        • A2JD

I’m not a kid so my memory goes back further than the last 10 years.  Trust me on my perspective.
I’m also not going to talk down this program and say we don’t have the School, the Coach, the Arena and the Team to deserve a top guy taking a very good look at coming here..  If this were 4 years ago, I might be more pumped that we are in the conversation but I’d say we are out of the shadows of ’99-’08.  I think we are beyond getting a Participation Trophy for the recruitment of Mitch McGary.  I am not sure why you don’t.We are heading back to where we are supposed to be- Mitch coming to A2 gets us there a little faster.

  • A2JD

Maybe my memory is fuzzy but I seem to recall us running a fair bit last year.  After all, we did have a PG who finished top 5 in the nation in assists (and 1.6 more per game than Duke’s PG), many of which came in transition.

  • Mark

Sam’s Recruiting Roundup said that he would double down on UM getting Mitch at this point. He doesn’t have the gut feeling we want him to have but he really likes UM’s chances right now.

  • A2JD

I could somewhat stomach Mitch choosing UNC over Michigan but doook?   Mitch needs to watch this!

    • Sven187

I’m the other way around. Coach K is the lesser of the two evils in my mind. Roy Williams is a crybaby and a complete POS. I want to see nothing but bad things happen to that man.

UNC got a commitment from a top 50 center in the past few days, fwiw
