CBS: McGary’s Parents Favor Duke, AAU Coach Michigan

Dylan Burkhardt

bilde[1]CBS Sports’ Jeff Goodman stopped by Brewster Academy’s open gym on Wednesday and had the opportunity to talk with many of Brewster’s highly rated recruits, including Michigan target Mitch McGary. Goodman relays that McGary “didn’t deny” that his parents favor Duke while his AAU coach, Wayne Brumm, favors Michigan. John Beilein and Roy Williams were at Brewster yesterday while Coach K will stop by today. McGary continues to keep things close to the vest:

McGary didn’t deny the fact that his parents favor Duke while his summer coach with the SYF team, Wayne Brumm, likes Michigan.

“I’m keeping quiet,” he said. “I’m putting it down on paper and seeing what school fits me. I’m not sure when I’ll commit.”

Could today be the day? It’s when Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski will travel to Brewster and meet with McGary.

McGary discusses his process, potential future official visits and more in the full article.

Dylan, what percentage would you give the Wolverines of landing him?  Obviously this would be huge for Beilein and the program.

  • I think there is a big difference between “Didn’t deny” and “confirmed”. But that may be optimistic.

    • kennyYe

His AAU coach’s liking of Michigan is pretty much public information and does not need any confirmation. What is new to me is his parent’s opinion. Let’s hope that it is all speculation at this point and even it is true, the gap is narrow.

      • Umkevin

Yep, that was a disappointing tidbit considering that one of our advantages is that we’re the only school his parents can drive to to see him play. Like you said, hopefully the gap is narrow and there’s some recency bias at play.

  • maxwell’s demon

So Sam Webb was completely off base? It never seemed particularly plausible that his final three of the 6 were Mich, MD, and Fla.

  • kevin

    zeigler all over?

    • Don’t really see any similarities to Zeigler’s recruitment. Trey really liked Michigan but ended up playing for his dad at Central, a dynamic that isn’t at play in this recruitment.

      • MHoops1

Dylan, I know we discussed this briefly on another Board, but how do you get from “did not deny” to “admitted”, especially without knowing either the question posed or the answer given?

        • Didn’t mean much by it — changed it to be “didn’t deny” for accuracy.

        • sane1

You don’t. It could be true, but dad was pretty effusive re: Beilein and Michigan after their visit.

          • Tom, Too…

            1. Expressing feelings of gratitude, pleasure, or approval in an unrestrained or heartfelt manner: “an effusive welcome”.

      • kevin

i didn’t mean literally, just big recruit, likes michigan a ton, down to final two and then miss out.  hope that isn’t the case. and i get what you’re saying, makes sense.

Since Day 1 I really thought that McGary was a good fit here and would eventually commit to us. I had this hunch that he was going to choose us. But now that we are entering the final stage of speculation and rumors, I am starting to get pessimistic. I don’t even know what to think anymore about this recruitment…

    • Bluebufoon

Has anyone seen or heard any info on how Jon Horford is looking in work-outs or open gyms since returning to campus ? I love McGary and his game but until he commits to U-M, I am focused on the development and progression of Horford, Jordan Morgan and Evan Smotrycz. Living here in the south, I just remember the jump Al Horford made between his freshman to sophomore year at Florida– if Jon can duplicate his brother’s success U-M basketball is fat and happy.

      • DingoBlue

I agree.  I’m hoping we can snag McGary as a sign of what Beilein can do at Michigan with recruiting.  But I too am more interested in seeing Horford in play this season.  A buff, athletic Horford would give us a new look this season as an option.

  • gpsimms

is the “I’m not sure when i will commit” maybe a sign he’s going to draw this out to the end? Earlier he had said he would definitely commit before his hs season…

    • No. I believe he still plans to make a commitment before/during the November signing period rather than sign late in the spring.

    • Mattski

In a Free Press piece a while back he maintained that he wanted to decide before his own fall practices began.

  • A2JD

If he HAD to pick another school, the last place out of his Final 6 I’d want him to go is dooook.  By and large, Coach K doesn’t really develop bigs into NBA talent.  Brand and Boozer are the exceptions over the last 15 years.  That’s not too impressive when you think about how many McDonald’s All-Americans he’s had.

    • Learntospellyouidiot

It’s spelled DUKE you uneducated moron.

    • Stupidpeoplehater

Duke has more active NBA players than any other school idiot.

  • A2JD

By NBA talent, I mean they were good players in the NBA, not busts like Sheldon Williams or Shavlik Randolph.
