Game 18: Michigan at Indiana Open Thread

Dylan Burkhardt
on

Indiana natives Zack Novak and Stu Douglass will lead Michigan to the Hoosier state in search of Michigan’s first Big Ten road win of the season. The game tips off at 8:00 pm ET and is the last game of a quadruple header on the Big Ten Network. Hopefully you can pull yourself away from the NFL playoffs, change the channel, and join in our open thread.

Here’s your guide to all of our pregame coverage: Game Preview, Q&A with Inside the Hall, Pick to Click, and some pregame reading material.

  • Tweeter

Why set a up a play for our worst three point shooter?

    • CJD

      Ditto…….

  • bryemye

That’s the worst half of basketball I can remember.

    • steve

two years ago when we made the tournament we were down 41-20 at half… that was just as bad…

  • That Guy

    Vogrich is not good

    • wayman britt

The Big Ten is just to quick for him. Every team knows to over play him and dare him to drive. While, when he is on D, just blow by him.

  • grandchamp

Wow what an awful half. I know we will battle back but not sure if it will be enough.

  • wayman britt

Can’t get any worst than that.

  • Dylan Burkhardt

Smotrycz three fouls, Vogrich three fouls, and Hardaway two fouls. No offense and no defense.

  • Nate the Newt

    Fire up the bus.

  • CJD

The high school I attended (Trenton Michigan) maybe has the worst high school basketball program there is and those kids play a better brand of basketball than what UM showed in the first half.

  • Tweeter

wtf was that? I cant stand watching Morris play right now. All of his moves require him to get twenty dribbles before attacks. He is basically worthless off the ball and he is letting his offensive struggles effect his defense.

The entire team is just playing soft. Beaten to loose balls, pushed under the hoop on rebounds, not moving their feet on D, sloppy passing, lazy cutting, the list goes on and on.

If I am Beilein I am coming out of the lockerroom with Bartelstein, Person and company. No one else deserves to be out there right now.

    • CJD

I would have done it at the 10 minute mark; it may have had a better result.

  • um-nyc

We always play like crap in Bloomington, but this is painful. On a brighter note, Stu finally hit a 3

  • Dylan Burkhardt

    IU: 1.2ppp, 63 eFG%, 32 % TO Rate, 60% OR%, 53% FTA/FGA.
    U-M: .6 ppp, 31 eFG%, 20% TO Rate, 19% OR%, 19% FTA/FGA

Outplayed in almost every phase. Lucky to be down 15 honestly.

    • Tweeter

Not really luck, just that Indiana is a terrible team. Just about all Michigan needed to do was show up, but instead we got this.

  • wayman britt

Beilein and the Crisler crowd have to make it more intimating for the refs and opposing team at Crisler. We seem to always not get the calls at other arenas, but don’t get them at home either.

    • Tweeter

      Kansas may disagree with you

    • CJD

Hmmm……… I would be willing to bet that most every site like this that cheers for the home team has the same exact complaint.

      • wayman britt

You may be right, but if you were a ref. would you be intimated by Beilein.

You must admit coaches can affect the officiating. Just look at Crean, Izzo, Painter

        • CJD

Just my opinion but I think there are fewer coaches that work the ref well enough to get a call than most claim.

  • billiam

So, which links are working for you guys? I can’t get the p2p site working.

  • Tweeter

Ok, new half. Lets go men. One good half is all we need.

  • Dylan Burkhardt

Indiana shot 86% on twos in that half. Awful. 0 for 5 on threes.

  • maxwell’s demon

THJR our game leader with 4 pts, hahaha.

  • steve

if we make a run and are aggressive we can get back in it… indiana will turn the ball over and hopefully stop making every shot

  • CJD

Just wondering; it appears from the beginning of the game THJ has been taking a smaller defender down on the block asking for the ball in the post yet they never feed him. Could this have been part of the game plan that is not being put into action?

  • steve

and quinn buckner… when you are announcing you are supposed to be unbiased… “oh morris walked”… “nice move from indiana”…

    • Tweeter

he sounds like a retarded Jimmy Jackson tonight. Muting the tv was the highlight of my night so far.

      • grandchamp

Yeah it’s a joke that every BTN game has a homer announcing the game.

  • billiam

What’s the score, What’s the score, what’s the score?

    • CJD

      Down 21

    • steve

      44-32 IU 14 mins left

  • CJD

Hate to say it again but I would yank J Mo and let him watch from the bench; he has played out of control most of the game.

    • Tweeter

      do u mean D Mo?

  • Tweeter

Another classic example of the team over helping on D. What in the hell is Jordan Hulls going to do when he penetrates in to the lane? The guy is 4’2, stop helping!!! Or at the very least dont help when you are the fourth defender to arrive at the spot – Im talking to you Matt Vogrich.

  • wayman britt

Why not see if Eso can make a basket, nobody else can shoot tonight.

  • CJD

OK I have a question; ifffffffffffff Ray McCallum would have signed with UM would J Mo still be starting?

    • Tweeter

Ok Im assuming you mean D Mo even though you keep saying J Mo. The answer is yes. Although there would be a fair number of games where McCallum would outplay him and play more minutes.

      • Dylan Burkhardt

Yeah, I think Morris would still be the starter. McCallum hasn’t dominating as much as I expected at UofD but he’s been good. Zeigler has had a pretty rough season at CMU.

      • CJD

Sorry you are right D Mo. I have not seen a lot of McCallum but he was on TV here on the East Coast once and he has serious game.

        • grandchamp

Ray Mac was never even on our radar so it’s not like we had a chance of having him.

    • mgocanada

isn’t Ray McCallum a 6’1 PG? And JMo is a 6’8 C? Who is confused here?

PS Regardless of the answer I think we are all confused by how badly the Wolverines are sucking tonight.

      • CJD

My error; I have been using wrong initials all night. I meant D Mo

  • Tweeter

Oh how I miss the days where Douglass didnt miss.

  • Ferramamos

Stu Douglass???? Last few games the confidence is not there.

  • grandchamp

Douglass is a liability on both ends, I’d rather have Vogrich in there. JB seems to be realizing that tonight finally.

    • Dylan Burkhardt

I’m sure he’s not just realizing that he’s struggling. But on the other hand he knows he needs him and hopes that he can break out of his slump. Not happening…

      • grandchamp

I agree Dylan, he is lightning in a bottle when his game is on. I think Vogrich has played a decent all around game tonight.

    • CJD

      Vogrich better on D? Seriously?

      • grandchamp

Tonight his D has been as good if not better than Stu’s imo.

        • wayman britt

If we think Vogrich is good on D, we are in loads of trouble.

          • grandchamp

I’ve been the first to bash his lack of quickness/athleticism, he’s looked a step quicker tonight to me.

  • steve

    hulls is annoying

  • Tweeter

Ah at least we got the “girl from 4E” State Farm commercial. Now if we could just get some barbasol.

  • maxwell’s demon

Well our experienced indiana boys did not come to play today.

    • Tweeter

Dont think it was just them

      • wayman britt

Tweeter – I agree everybody played bad, but your upperclassman need to produce on the road.

      • maxwell’s demon

Agreed but I was hoping/expecting for good games from both of them.

  • Ferramamos

Dmorris is just standing there on Hall’s 3

  • Tweeter

Ok think I have seen enough. Dylan, feel free to skip the postgame on this one

  • um-nyc

i think beilien needs to open things up a bit in general. without another dribble drive guy this offense just doesn’t work. the only time we go on scoring runs is when we’re pushing the ball and we usually dont start doing that until we’re down big. THJ could be that other guy but he’s just not there yet

  • grandchamp

The lack of another pg has been killing us lately. Too bad Grady left the team a few years ago, I’m sure he would be improved by now.

    • wayman britt

Agree. Grady would have been nice to have.

  • wayman britt

Well unless we get red hot the rest of the season and can beat MSU, PU and UW, Michigan can kiss the NCAA tournament good bye this year.

    • Dylan Burkhardt

The real problem here is that you, and some other people, had severely overrated Michigan’s NCAA tournament chances.

      • Gary

Agreed – this has always been an NIT team at best. You don’t get a bid without some big non-conference wins.

  • steve

worst loss ive seen in a while… this indiana team is very very mediocre… they have like two good players and we got smoked… no effort in the first half cost us this game… only thing i can think of is maybe we were tired from playing OSU and kansas… but that is no excise for this performance… oh well…

    • Dylan Burkhardt

It was a poor performance no doubt. Always seems like games at Assembly Hall go like this for us though.

    • CJD

This is the first game that I have watched so far this year that our lack of experienced leadership has really shown. This whole game spun out of control shortly after the tip and it never got better.

Our lack of diversity on the offensive side of the ball (we have zippo in the paint) will only look worse as teams learn how to defend us. As for the defensive side this game showed we can not take off one play let alone a whole half or game and expect to win.

Our youth means that we will have ups and downs but there is zero room for lack of effort and that is what it looked like tonight.

  • grandchamp

Maybe Beilien should cry to the refs the whole game like Izzo does and we would get some calls for once.

  • grandchamp

They just stop the clock there when we are on a fast break??

  • grandchamp

Nobody deserves to be named player of the game tonight.

  • Nate the Newt

Agree with Dylan, we should expect a couple of games like this this year given our youth and lack of upperclassmen.

    • CJD

Agreed! That said we always seem to lay too many eggs regardless of our experience; and I think that is basically what college basketball is nowadays. There are just games where for some reason or another kids just do not show up to play.

  • grandchamp

Trey and CB cannot arrive soon enough.

  • Gary

    Glad that’s over!

  • CJD

I just looked at UM draft picks; not a single first rounder since Jamal Crawford or any pick at all since Bernard Robinson was drafted in the 2nd round. Fact is we are just not getting the talent we were used to for years and years.

    • grandchamp

Manny is playing big minutes for Cleveland this year.

      • Dylan Burkhardt

On an unrelated note, the Cavs gave up 80 points in the first half to the Nuggets tonight. Sheesh.

  • CJD

No doubt; where was he drafted?

    • grandchamp

He wasn’t, it’s better for guys like him not to be drafted than drafted in the 2nd round.

      • CJD

It appears you did not get my point; I could not be happier for Manny and all he has done thus far in Cleveland but the point was that we are just not attracting the type of quality player that we once expected.

I have not done the research but I would have to imagine that if I were I would find that Michigan has far fewer players in the NBA than any of the current upper tier of the Big Ten.

Without looking it up I think we have 3; Juwan Howard – Jamal Crawford – Manny Harris

        • grandchamp

Ok do your research then if you think the other big 10 teams will have a lot more. Bottom line is we have finally found the right coach and we are getting better and better recruits each season.

          • CJD

            2010 – Evan Turner / OSU
2009 – BJ Mullen / OSU: Goran Suttan / MSU
2008 – Eric Gordon / IU: Kosta Koufos / OSU: DJ White / IU:
2007 – Greg Oden / OSU: Mike Conley / OSU: Daequan Cook / OSU: Alando Tucker / Wisc.: Carl Landry / Perdue: Adam Hulaska / Iowa
2006 – Shannon Brown / MSU: Maurice Ager – MSU: Paul Davis – MSU: James Augustine – Ill.: Dee Brown – Ill.:
2005 – Deron Williams / Ill.: Bracey Wright / IU:
2004 – Devon Harris / Wisc.: Kris Humphies / Minn.:

Then finally Bernard Robinson from UM in 2004

          • Dylan Burkhardt

Is this a list of all Big Ten draft picks? If so, OSU has had 6 of the last 12 NBA draft picks.

          • CJD

I got it from nbadraft.net; yes all draft picks are listed and the above are those from the big ten.

          • Go Blue

            lol

        • grandchamp

It’s just a matter of time beside OSU gets busted for violations. Half of the ppl that you listed that got drafted aren’t even in the league anymore.

          • CJD

I will simply defer back to my original point; it is hard to debate that we are not getting the talent that we had become accustomed to getting back in the day when they were often picked to be the class of the big ten.

  • drae

Damn that was ugly… Not what I thought would happen after 2 close loses to 2 top 3 teams in the nation… Not just a lose but a beatin by Indiana!! Not good at all, need to regroup quick and get ready for NW… Go Blue…

  • AG2

I really did see a game like this coming, I’m afraid. I didn’t believe we’d be able to take advantage of Indiana’s propensity to foul, I thought IU’s energetic style of play would overwhelm us like the UTEP game. The difference is I thought it would be Christian Watford who would be the unstoppable one, but for some reason it always seems to be Verdell Jones.

I want to be able to put this game behind us, but right about now only a win in Evanston would allow for that. I respect Beilein but its times like these that remind me of Bob Huggins statement that the first thing he had to do when he got to West Virginia was teach John Beilein’s guys how to play defense.

To be fair though, Amaker had two instances of going into Mackey Arena to face a 9-win Purdue team and lost by 25+ so I still maintain Beilein’s got the edge on him.

    • j-turn14

In a couple games (really only the second halves of a couple games), the D was not good. However, D has most definitely not been the problem in general for this team.

  • Alex

I couldn’t watch the game on TV night due to a family dinner but I looked at updates on ESPN. Like many others I wasn’t happy but inconsistency can be expected of a young team. If they can learn from this game there will have been some worth. Beat NU.
