  • Nice Jalen anecdote about all of South Quad staring out the windows at the Fab V the first time they all played together. Was there even an image of C Webb in the whole piece?

  • Dylan Burkhardt

U-M shooting 32% from 3pt range. Rebounding 42% of their missed shots. Rebounding 74% of Cuse’s missed shots might be more impressive.

Morgan with 8, 4-7 shooting. Smotrycz with 6 (2-7 shooting), Douglass with 8 (3-4 shooting)

You know Cuse is going to give Michigan their best shot coming out of the break, curious how this young team reacts.

  • MaizeNBlueJ

Jordan Morgan with a defensive board, bucket, and then takes his second charge of the half!

  • ks

and a tip for steal for morgan. need to go a little stronger on the lay-ups – draw some fouls or something. too many blocked lay-ups..

  • MaizeNBlueJ

Syracuse makes their run. 38-33 Syracuse with 16:53 left in the game.

  • Beilein one steal too late w. the time out?

  • Dylan Burkhardt

Syracuse puts together a 9-0 run, Michigan trails 38-33 and calls a time out.

  • MaizeNBlueJ

Beautiful set play out of the time out. Hardaway for 3 from the corner. Down 2.

  • MaizeNBlueJ

Michigan down 2, 40-38 at the under 16 time out.

  • Dylan Burkhardt

Michigan responds with a run of their own including a Hardaway three and a Morris pull up. Michigan trails by 2 at the under 16 minute timeout.

  • YpsiTuckyBoy

Defense does look a lot better. I’m assuming it’s the height, but still can’t quite put my finger on it. It’s weird to say, but this team looks almost as good as last years but more cohesive. I was a huge doubter, but I agree with Dylan – this team could make noise in the Big 10 if they can play at this level.

  • YpsiTuckyBoy

And if this is the second to worst team in the B10 as the analysts say, the B10 is without a doubt the best conference in the country.

  • MaizeNBlueJ

Morris with a floater. Still down 2, 42-40 now.

  • MaizeNBlueJ

Jordan Morgan takes his 3rd charge of the game. To say I love this kid’s game is an understatement.

  • Dylan Burkhardt

Jordan Morgan takes his third charge of the game and Michigan trails by 2.

  • Dr. S

Staying close in spite of poor shooting.

  • MaizeNBlueJ

Wolverines go small with with Novak at the 4. Syracuse turns it over.

  • Dylan Burkhardt

44-42 Syracuse with 8 minutes left. Stu with a great lead pass to Hardaway for the dunk in transition.

  • MaizeNBlueJ

Nice look ahead by Douglass, finds Hardaway for a dunk. Timeout Syracuse. Wolverines down 2.

  • MaizeNBlueJ

That’s right there, exemplifies why in a perfect world, Horford would redshirt this year.

  • kevin

gotta grab those d boards, the common ground for the game seems to be the number of team fouls each team has given up each half (2 for michigan in first half until 10 seconds left and led/ vice versa this half with syracuse).

  • There’s more talent on this team than I recognized. And maybe just enough veteran assurance in Novak, Douglass, and Morris to keep them from folding in tough situations.

  • Tim

I’m disappointed that this game has been officiated completely different in both halves. The only thing I ever ask out of officials are to be consistent and so far they haven’t been. They are all over our backs and we can’t get a call. Then they call that third foul on Morgan on a 50-50 ball.

  • WTHef?

Good thing Syracuse shoots free throws like, well, Syracuse

  • MaizeNBlueJ

    Douglass for 3, up 45-44.

  • Dylan Burkhardt

47-45 Syracuse. Michigan continues to hang tough but Scoop Jardine just hit a big open three. Michigan needs a good strong offensive play here coming out of the timeout.

  • I thought that third foul on Morgan was legit. Wish we could hit a few more, but we’re playing great.

  • Dylan Burkhardt

49-45 Cuse. Michigan will inbound with just 5 seconds left on the shot clock. 3:09 left in the game.

  • MaizeNBlueJ

49-45 Syracse with just over 3 to play. Wolverine ball with 5 seconds left on the shot clock when they come back.

  • Andy

Offense is looking very confused against the 2-3. Need to be quicker and more decisive.

  • Tim

Yup can’t be disappointed with the effort at all. It’s not over yet, but we need to make some shots. Defense has done a good job. We just haven’t been able to defend Kris Joseph. Kid is making ridiculous shots.

  • Inbounds plays look good–that’s an improvement over last year!

  • Tim

Gotta call a timeout there. Morris with a terrible decision

  • Morris trying to do too much. Hardaway showing why he’s gonna be a star. Wish we could have integrated him a little more in the second half.

  • Other Matt

Nice effort, I think there’s a lot to like about this team. I’m excited to watch them grow up over the course of the year. That possession that Morris gave away at the end really hurt, but oh well.

  • AG2

Tough loss, but I am really starting to like this team. The important thing is not to get too down because we can still beat UTEP tomorrow.

  • Mason

Tough loss, but so proud of the effort. Can’t help but feel that we’ve got something here. Now let’s get a win tomorrow night!

  • Andy

The last five minutes showed why we need a Burke or Brundidge guy to break down a defense.

Pretty solid all in all though. I’m encouraged.

  • Dylan Burkhardt

We’ll be chatting live with David Merritt, join in the fun.

  • Drew

Hey, that’s alright with me. Three point loss to the #9 team in the country. Kris Joseph hit some big-time shots. Loved the effort…Seems like Novak’s hustle is rubbing off on some of the others. Notice how Smot and Morgan pursue the ball with a lot of heart…Gotta love that. Overall pretty good game, I was slightly disappointed with DMo’s decision making at times, but hey, let’s remember this kid is only a sophomore. Tomorrow against UTEP, let’s get it!!

    Couple Notes on this game:

-I’ve never heard such biased announcing. It obviously didn’t affect the game but wow that was annoying to listen to.
-I don’t want to see Horford on the floor anymore. Rebounding is supposed to be one of his strengths. His one possession of PT where he missed two easy rebounds because he couldn’t hold the basketball was just painful to watch
-The officiating changed drastically from the 1st half to 2nd half. They let them play in the first half and then called everything in the 2nd. Perhaps if we had attacked the basket more, we also would have gotten the benefit of some terrible foul calls. Oh well.

Takeaway – Michigan didn’t play well (offensively) and still looked like the better team (and it wasn’t that close). Sometimes the better team doesn’t win the game.

    • Lordfoul

Pretty sure that Horford was out there because of foul trouble for the other bigs. He is skinny and outmatched physically, but “I don’t want to see Horford on the floor anymore” is a little strong IMO. It isn’t as if McLimans was doing anything better.

Michigan couldn’t figure out the zone defense in the second half, but played good enough defense to stay in it. John B. coached a great game. But blaming the refs is sour grapes, just as many sketchy calls went for Michigan as against.

This was encouraging over-all. Let’s see if these boys can get it done against the Miners.

      • UMQuasi

I rarely blame refs so I take a lot offense to the sour grapes remark. There is sour grapes and there are phantom calls. There were literally some foul calls on Michigan where our man was FEET away from the Syracuse player. It most likely didn’t cost us the game (because they were terrible from the line), but that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t mention it.

I agree, Beilein out-coached Boeheim, and we outplayed them, that’s why I was so frustrated.

I was making observations in my first comment, but after reading your response, I’m actually angry. Not everyone who questions calls is a whiner–some calls are bad. I think players should never question/blame refs, but I’m not a player, I’m a fan. Don’t insult me by implying I don’t what I’m talking about.

Good game I guess from the boys. I was at the bar so I couldnt exactly here everything that was going on and I was distracted from time to time in watching. But I agree from what I could hear, it sounded like the announcers were all over Syracuse’s nuts. But whatever on that. This UM team showed that they are a lot better than just bottom feeders in the big Ten. Still do not think they are tourney ready but the they can make a push for the NIT.

I thought we playd really hard, but still gave up way too many open looks. It still seems like we over-rotate at times. Maybe it was just the drinking, but I felt like we had far too many possessions where three and sometimes four help defenders rotated to stop the ball instead of just one guy. Maybe we had to do this because of the Cuse length, but I hope its just something we can work out.

Morgan continues to impress and that bodes really well for the future. He looks like he is going to be a solid 5 man for a long time.

Offensively we still need a lot of work. The Cuse 2-3 is always tough to handle for a perimeter team when shots are not falling, so I give the team a pass somewhat. But I thought shot selection in the second half was questionable.
