Video: JaVontae Hawkins at Great Lakes Summer Championships

Dylan Burkhardt

JaVontae Hawkins is one of several prospects with a Michigan offer in the class of 2012. Joe made it out to see the 6-foot-4 guard at the Great Lakes Summer Championship in Flint. The quality of play in the two games that this video was cut from wasn’t the best. The tournament was at the end of the first evaluation and I think there is definitely a bit of tired legs. Regardless, it’s a chance to at least get a glimpse of Hawkins’ game.

  • “The quality of play wasn’t the best, as the tournament was at the end of the evaluation period and there were plenty of tired legs.”

I think that’s a convenient excuse for kids who didn’t play well. That doesn’t explain the performances of kids who were also coming off travel from other tournaments, but did play well — many of whom earned scholarship offers at this tournament, they just don’t happen to be media darlings. They just earn it.

  • Fair point. But the two games I cut the film from were just extremely sloppy, even by AAU standards. I edited the blurb a little bit, not trying to make an excuse or rip the other kids playing. The games were just sloppy.

He has a verry sloppy game. Big difference between his game and Denzel Valentine who is a much smoother thrill to watch on the court.Very Overhyped in my opinion.

My order would be 1. Stauskas, 2. Valentine, 3. Hawkins… but that’s just me right now.. and if we actually have a chance at Gary Harris he is #1 on that list for wings in 2012

I very prefer Hawkins over Valentine. He has athleticism and can break down defenders unlike Valentine.
