Recruiting Bullets (5-5-10)

2008620349[1] 933370[1]
Colton Christian (2010) and Demarquise Johnson (2012) are two new targets on Michigan’s radar

  • Billiam

I might have missed it, but could you post some videos on Colton? The only video I've got is this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTvjv7KXdrM (he's the #4 dunk.) Anyone got actual game tape?

  • Billiam

wait, when did Christian decommit from Tulane? espn still has him going there, as does rivals?

  • http://www.umhoops.com/ Dylan

    That's all I've seen as well…

  • http://www.umhoops.com/ Dylan

They changed coaches and he's been let out of his LOI as far as I know.

  • fresh

from the articles i have read about him, the former coach from tulane raved about his athleticism and that he was an outstanding rebounder, i believe i also read that his offense was a work in progress but i love athletic kids………….some game footage would definitely be great to see or anything besides a 3 second dunk

Christian seems to be the last piece of this class.

  • GrandChamp

From Twitter. Seems like they both like MSU.

    @RJHunter22 i thought u was a michigan state dude????

@kevinferrell11 lol I am man but I still got love for Mich. Beline is super down to earth

  • BLueFan

Tulane, Sacred Heart, & Montana….I'm not excited about this kid.

  • Steve

This whole Sykes saga is extremely strange to me. So does he hold a committable offer and is just slowplaying us or are Beilein and Co. waiting on someone like Christian? The more time passes, the more and more I'd like someone who's excited to be a wolverine, although getting sykes from the PSL would be great for future in-state recruiting.

  • JB01

    cal offered him

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shane-Locke/1838745739 Shane Locke

tulane has a basketball team? I hope someday we will be stealing recruits from ohio state and kentucky level teams not tulane and iupui

  • YpsiTuckyBoy

I just don't get why Beilein seems so intent on getting an extra guy for 2010. Just doesn't seem to make sense to me. But, then again, he's the coach. I trust him.

  • JB01

i'm not the coach either, but i take it as a sign of how bare our roster is. he wants to get started building the team post manny and deshawn asap. he'll still have one spot for plumlee, williams, zeller, katenda, etc. and the other blue chip recruits…and the chances of us landing more than one of them are slim (i.e. don't pass up on a decent player who can play this season to hold open a second spot). we'll see. i know i will be very happy if beilein offers and colton picks maize and blue. add brundidge and another great recruit in 2011 and our program is well on its way…

  • waldo78

I trust JB and will be happy with whoever he brings in but I sure would like to have 2 ships next year. If we can get a de-commit from Tulane this year, why not try to get two supers to go with Carlton next year instead. If we only get one super next year, then we use the other ship on a de-commit from Central Florida or wherever. Sometimes a bird in the hand just makes it too crowded for a potential eagle next year. Does that make sense?

  • Wayman Britt

Wish I knew more about Christian, but Tulane isn't exactly a basketball power. Is he going to be better than other potential recruits for 2011?

I feel the same about Sykes. We are competing against UCF?? If we want to compete against MSU, OSU and PU we need top recruits.

  • Jay

In other news, im sure Dylan is happy about this one but Brian Ellerbe has just been brought on as an assistant at Depaul.

  • JB01

i see both sides of it, but it's hard for me to form a strong opinion because i have seen colton play for about 30 seconds via youtube. if JB thinks he's a diamond in the rough and worthy of an offer then i trust him.
I lean toward getting one more player in this class, but i don't want to settle on a mediocre player.

Christian said he picked Tulane because he liked the coaching staff and the city of New Orleans…

Here's some info from a couple articles that mention Colton Christian.

    From Seattlepi.com:

After trying to do too much at times as a junior, Christian has blossomed into a player capable of dominating at any time. Bellevue coach Chris O'Connor said Christian has learned to stay engaged on every possession, worked to improve defensively and is realizing what a difference staying active without the ball makes for his game. “Colton is super-athletic,” O'Connor said. “He's extremely long and plays like he's 6-8. He can alter shots, is an effective offensive rebounder and does what is needed to make us a better team.”

“Colton is a 'pick-your-poison' type of player. He presents so many matchup problems, can run the floor and finish in traffic.” — Ben Eisenhardt, Bainbridge

    From Neworleans.com:

Christian, a 6-7 forward from Madina, Wash., helped lead Bellevue High School in Seattle to a 26-3 overall record and a third-place finish in the state by averaging 16.2 points and 10.4 rebounds per game for head coach Chris O’Connor. Christian earned first-team All-Kingco Conference honors and led his team to both the Kingco Conference regular season and tournament titles.

  • JB01

no he's not better than our potential recruits. two things though:
    1. they are “potential” recruits with several schools on their lists, most of which are bball powerhouses. trey zeigler and casey prather had michigan in their final two this year.
    2. in 2011 after one year at military school and one year at UM, it's possible he will be better than a freshman katenda, williams, etc. if it's even close i'd rather have colton for four years than williams who could leave after 2

  • Brian W

I probably should have put this post here instead with the new practice facility earlier, so I'll post the links to the Colton videos here. JB01 pointed out that the second game has Darius Morris playing in it.

    1. MP Holiday Classic Championship – He's number 3 in the navy jersey. Makes a nice skip pass around 1:47, nails a three a little later. Don't remember the time, but he hits a post-up shot at one point.

    2. Bellevue vs. Winward 2008 – Again, he's number 3 in navy. Has a sweet follow-up dunk at :20, the follows it up with a block on the other end. Has some other nice shots in the video.

neither link worked for me, but anyways i'll ALWAYS take a kid that is super athletic and has a constant motor because those are the kids that are going to win games ……..let the kid learn the game with good coaching and playing with and against good competition if you have athleticism then thats half the battle in my opinion……..the kid can do a little bit of everything from what i have read he just needs to refine things

  • Bluebufoon

If Michigan signs Colton Chrisitian. Then U-M needs a scoring forward either Marcus Thornton, Erik Katenda or Tommy McCune to go along with a true Big Man preferably Marshall Plumlee or Amir Williams.

PS Plumlee it would seenm would benefit greatly from spending the upcoming summer in the Gym working exclusively on his moves in the low post and scoring the basketball. Fundamentals would be more advantageous for Mr Plumlee than travelling the country playing in meaningless games where 9 times out of ten the guards won't throw him the ball. Plus he could be pumping iron, morning, noon and night.

I used the Share feature at MaxPreps and got the addresses that way instead of copying the link in the address bar. Maybe these will work better with your browser.

I think what we should remember is that it is still unknown if LLP will get a 5th year in 2011. With the aggressiveness Beilein is recruiting with right now for 2010, 2011, and 2012, I actually doubt LLP will get a 5th year, unless he shows DRAMATIC improvement in 2010. That will open up another scholarship in 2011. If we do land Christian, I see it being more doubtful that we land a Katenda (scoring forward) because we will have Smotrycz, Christian, Horford, Morgan, McLimans, Novak taking the 3-5 spots. If Christian comes and LLP does not get a 5th year, I see us going after a center (Plumlee or Williams) and a true PG (I like Pangos) to fill that class. 2012 should see a top-notch wing player. Personally, if Christian does not fit the bill, though I trust Beilein, I would save the scholarship for 2011 and hope for a class of Plumlee/Williams, Katenda, and Pangos. Time will tell and obviously this is wishful thinking, but still realistic.

  • Billiam

Interesting thoughts about LLP and his 5th year. I'm assuming this is mostly due to the decent anthony wright development? Two things about Christian:
1.) espn seems to say that he might be a sleeper (long link but here it is http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recruiting/baske…)
2.) he does have an indise-out game that would be exactly what we're looking for.
3.) he plays in one of the best leagues in high school bball.(http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recruiting/basketball/mens/news/story?id=4670167) This might be why he's such a sleeper. Correct me if I'm wrong but Plumlee and Zeller don't get many points playing in the better leagues (no, I'm not going to post a link here, but there are scouting links in this site that show they're getting about 10 points a game in AAU) so its feasible that Christian is a sleeper.

I doubt that he'll be the next Hayward (two star recruit) but this might just get your hopes up. I'd stll rather have Thornton though, if only because he's being offered by Calipari.

  • Billiam

wow, when I said “two things about christian” I meant “three things”.

  • http://www.umhoops.com/ Dylan

I think the sleeper playing for a good team thing goes both ways.

#1. If you play for a great team, a lot of people are going to see you play. Ant Wright played for Oak Hill but didn't play very much and that didn't make him a great player.

#2. Maybe you are a good player and just don't get the shots.

At this time of year, people take chances on kids. IU is looking at a kid from North Idaho College (http://www.insidethehall.com/2010/05/03/video-n…). I think Beilein's relationship with the Hargrave coach could be a big factor here though.

  • fresh

anthony wright not athletic at all, worse than novak even so thats hard to be good on a D1 level if your to slow and not agile enough to move

the thing that is sticking out to me when reading about christian is that at least 3 coaches have said he is really athletic…..dickerson (former tulane coach) and both high school and prep coaches said the same……….thats great stuff…….the hargrave school featured at least 4 kids in the rivals 150 so chances are it was a competition to even get to shoot out there…………..from the recent videos the kid can shoot a bit and from what i have read is a excellent rebounder……..i like the combination………its hard to say what his actually game is like now after a year at prep school…….the videos were from probably 2 years ago, im sure the kid is bigger, stronger, a bit more refined at this point so i suppose i agree with the idea of taking a chance with kids nothing to lose

If he played against Morris it was a year ago, his Junior season. I can't remember where I read it, but I know that somewhere someone said that he has grown a lot better since his Junior season. Also, at 215, he's 5 pounds heavier than Smot, so he might be strong enough to swtich between the 3 and 4. I'm just not sold on his quickness yet.

  • BigBlue

apparently christian has been on official visits to cal and penn state. He has been offered by both of those schools. The offers from sacred heart and montana date back to when he was in high school. Here is a link about him after he commited to tulane.
