BTT Game 2: Michigan vs. Ohio State Post Game

turner-shot Box score.

Michigan battled with Ohio State and continuously fought back despite being  behind by double digits for long stretches of the second half but in the end it wasn’t enough. Manny Harris single handily carried Michigan back into the game but it was all for not after Turner’s 40 foot running jumper as time expired.

Turner’s shot was tremendous and there’s a reason that he’s the best college basketball player in the country. Still, it was a running 40 footer from a 28% three point shooter. That’s not a high percentage shot from anyone.

First off, I don’t have a major problem with not defending the inbounder. If you are going to take a running shot like that, the inbounds pass isn’t all that critical. Guarding the inbounder comes into play if they are able to make a very long pass downcourt, Turner caught the ball at free throw line extended. It was a pass that could have been made even with Zack Gibson guarding Lighty.

What you do have to do is impede his progress at some point before half court. This didn’t happen because Buford set a great screen on Douglass. Once Turner is across half court, you simply can’t foul him so actually contesting the shot is tough to do. If you watch the replay, Douglass did have a bit of a hand in his face but not fouling has to be the #1 priority in that situation.

Still, Michigan needed to slow Turner down. I would have put one more player in the backcourt, especially with Buford back there as well, in an attempt to slow Turner down but I also realize that Beilein didn’t want to give up the long pass and a potential good two point look. 2.2 seconds is a time frame where you really have to think about throwing the ball further down the court. 4 or 5 seconds and you are more likely to see the kind of play that Ohio State ran because you can run the length of the court easier.

If Turner misses that shot, are people questioning whether Ohio State should have thrown the ball further down the court in attempt to a get a better look? It’s a thin line. At the end of the day, Turner made a hell of a shot and made it look ridiculously easy but not forcing Turner to work in the backcourt falls on Michigan’s defensive plan.

Back to the other 39 minutes and 57.8 seconds. There were a bunch of “here we go again” moments starting with Michigan’s collapse at the end of the first half which allowed Ohio State to close the half on a 25-6 run. Michigan consistently cut the lead to 5 or 6 points ago but Ohio State typically answered, pushing the lead back to ten. But for one of the first time this year, Michigan managed to play through their mistakes.

Then Manny Harris took over. Harris had 22 of his 26 points in the second half and scored in just about every way possible. He got to the free throw line, he took the ball to the rack, scored in transition, hit three point shots, and even scored in the midrange. Harris had some definitely low points this year but this was one of the high notes.  It was a firm reminder of just what Manny can be if he returns for his senior year. Harris provided no update on his future after the game, saying it would be “wrong and selfish” to discuss his future after the loss which is certainly reasonable.

Looking at the four factors… The game was pretty much a dead heat. Michigan outrebounded the Buckeyes and got to the free throw line more often. Ohio State outshot Michigan by the slimmest of margins (Turner’s last shot was the difference) and also won the turnover battle. Michigan turned the ball over 9 times in the first half but did a much better job in the second.

It was a valiant effort from Michigan but in the end it just wasn’t enough. The adage about “big time players making big time plays” is a cliche but in today’s case it was just the truth. Manny Harris was phenomenal but Evan Turner had the ball last, even if it was only for the last 2.2 seconds.

It’s fitting for this season to end with one more punch in the gut but now it’s time to move toward the future with signing day only a month away. You can bet that the players returning on this roster will be hungry. Any sort of complacency that developed during last off-season won’t be tolerable. In terms of what happens on the blog… We’ll have a series of posts examining what went wrong this year followed by a series of posts hypothesizing how to fix things. We’ll also continue to cover recruiting and everything else that we’ve done before.

Player Bullets:

  • Manny Harris: As I said in the post, Manny was just phenomenal. Some of the shots that he hit down the stretch are ones that we just haven’t seen from him. If Harris is able to supplement the rest of his game with the pull up jumper and a little runner, he will be far more dangerous. I don’t think he’s an NBA prospect right now but I wouldn’t fault him for putting his name in the draft without hiring an agent, leaving the door open to return.
  • Stu Douglass: Stu hit some huge three pointers in the second half and kept Michigan in the game. It was a long year for Stu, playing a lot more point guard than might have been expected but this was a great performance from Douglass.
  • DeShawn Sims: Peedi shot the ball very well but he had a couple of frustrating turnovers, mostly in the first half. It was still an all around solid performance from Sims in the last game of his career. I’m going to miss Peedi shooting those baseline fadeaway jumpshots, that’s for sure.
  • Zack Novak: 8 points (3-6 shooting) with three boards for Novak. I was shocked to see his two drives, including the pretty scoop layup under the rim. It’s something we expected more of this year but never really saw.
  • Zack Gibson: Gibson provided a few quality minutes and it was great to see him play hard down the stretch. Gibson was woefully inconsistent throughout his career but he did have his moments of glory.
  • Laval Lucas-Perry: Three rebounds, 2 steals, and two assists is nice but Laval’s shooting was just painful down the stretch this year. It’s the cross roads for Laval, he needs to make major strides this offseason.

agree completely on the crossroads for LLP. He is already clearly behind Douglass at the 2 and Morris will in all liklihood be the 1 next year. You cant play those three together, so now he is certain to have to come off the bench. However, Vogrich should improve a lot just by adding some strength over the year and Hardaway, jr. is coming in. Either of those guys could easily pass him on the depth chart. Not to mention that if Manny stays and Zeigler commits, there is going to be a logjam at the 3 also, so a guy like Novak might get some run at the 2 like he did late this year.

Bottom line is that there are going to be more options next year and if LLP doesnt step it up, he might not see the floor at all.

Can’t wait for this next month to be over so that we know for sure who we got coming in and who we got coming back.

  • Colin

This is the Michigan team I had hoped to see the entire year. Peedi was hot with his turn-around baseline jumpers in the first half and Manny was flat out tremendous in the second half (both slashing and shooting). And for one of the few times we had a 3rd scorer in Douglass.

Still, Michigan could not put a complete game together. Just like against Iowa and many other games this year (vs. MSU, @ Wisc., etc.), Michigan started off hot and let their opponent go on a huge run. At least here, Michigan showed heart and was able to come back.

As for the last 2.2 seconds… the only thing I have to say is there should have been another guy on the other side of half court for Michigan to force Turner to change direction. Regardless, Turner hit a running 40 footer. Blame Beilein if you want, but it is what it is.

BTW, Michigan actually rebounded really well considering OSU is a much bigger team.

  • Evan

Still only loosing by one on a last second shot from half court is pretty impressive ohio state is easily the most talented team in the big ten

  • michigan hoops 4eva

Dylan, just wanted to say thank you for the great analysis you’ve provided this year. I know it’s been tough, and there have been many lows and disappointments, but you continued to provide resources for true Michigan basketball fans.

    Goals for this off-season:
    1) Get Trey Zeigler and Jon Horford!
    2) Laval Lucas-Perry needs to improve. I don’t know how exactly, but he needs to work his ass off to stand a chance of starting next year.
    3) Convince Manny to come back, and if he does, Manny needs to get stronger and work on his mid-range game.
    4) Douglass, LLP, Hardaway, and Novak need to become proficient shooters. Douglass showed his potential today, but to make that routine, all 4 of these guys need to shoot, shoot, and shoot again.
    5) Hope that we can establish big men…Morgan and McLimans need to get healthy, and Smotrycz (and Horford if he commits) need to toughen up and get ready for big ten basketball.

  • DaveR

Great game – uh, except for the ending of course.

    Hat’s off to Harris.

He showed what he can do when he’s inspired.

Hope Manny stays and plays with the same fire consistently next year.

With a couple more pieces and a motivated Manny returning, Michigan might be able to field a decent team next year.

  • Chris

Not only does Manny need to get stronger and improve his mid-range game, but he needs to become that Senior leader that people look to like we had with Merritt and Lee. Manny should take a note from Grevis Vasquez at Maryland. The kid was not a leader and got in trouble and even suspended for a few games just like Manny. Vasquez came back for his senior year after testing the NBA waters and was the Player of the year in the ACC.

  • RMS

It never stops being funny when UM loses in anything!

  • cy

Manny was tremendous in the second half down the stretch, however that has been is MO all year. He has yet to put a complete game together. Watching him at times he looks out of touch or frustrated and almost half asses it during parts of the game which results in stupid turnovers. I think Mich lost that game early in the first half when they didnt score for almost 4 minutes. Still, the coach is at fault for not putting a guy on Evan to slow him down. You put your best athlete on their best athlete, Manny on Evan. It worked towards the end of the second half when Evan tried to drive the lane and Manny d him up as good as anyone could of and Evan turned it over in the lane. From the time Ohio State took the lead in the first half until Manny lit a fire under his butt, the team looked like they had all year, going through the motions and turning the ball over. that is coaching… coach B is better than that and I think he knows it. Going to miss Sims, man was he unstoppable in the first half, where did he go?? Manny needs to come back, if he leaves, he will get drafted in the second round and become the next Daniel Horton….

  • Evan

I think the whole thing for LLP and Novak is confidence. You could tell against iowa when LLP made a 3 then he had a jump in his step and made a drive for 2 the next play

  • Brian W

Had to record the game ’cause of work and managed to not hear the score before watching it. Wow. Manny definitely came to play today. I hope that’s not the last time we see him in the maize and blue. He should come back, but we’ll see.

Great players make plays, so Evan Turner did what a national player of the year can do. That’s his Christian Laettner moment.

Good luck to Peedi. Hope he finds success wherever he ends up playing.

Sounds like U-M will be hosting some basketball visitors at the spring football game. Sam Webb mentioned it during his recruiting round-up this morning. U-M coaches have been keeping tabs on Eric Katenda, a 6-9 PF/SF from Cheshire Academy in Connecticut. He’s a 2011 recruit.

Would love to see michigan hoops 4eva’s number one goal happening in the next few weeks. I’d add “develop a productive bench” as a goal for next year.

  • Tweeter

The funny thing about Manny this game, is that I was about to blow up on him during the game with like ten minutes left or something. He had done very little to that point, looked disinterested, and committed a couple just awful turnovers in a row. Then he made a three, then got a basket in transition, then scored going to the basket in the half court, then hit another three and we finally saw some emotion out of him.

You could tell that this team looks to him for guidance and to set and example, and when he gets fired up this whole team does. He also made two great defensive plays on Turner in the final four minutes.

I think at times he believes he has to be passive and let his teammates get touches so that everyone feels involved. That is fine, but I really wish he would get aggressive off the ball during those times. Cut extra hard, set some screens and attack the offensive glass.

He played a great game when looking at it as a whole and he has done a lot for this program. I just hope he looks at his options and realizes that another year of just working on his game could really pay off. Especially if he can develope a left hand.

  • http://www.umhoops.com Dylan

These… are painful. (from a Rivals post)

  • Brian W

Manny tried going left a couple of times from the top of the key, and OSU clogged the lane and forced a pass. His ball handling can be inconsistent. He’ll look great for stretches and then fumble it out of bounds or dribble it off his knee for a turnover. It’s mostly when he tries to do TOO much by himself and not work his teammates into the flow and pass it a little. Having Stu make shots today helped make OSU play honest defense instead of keying on Manny.

Would be nice to have Novak show Vogrich how to move without the ball. He would sometimes just stand at the three point line and stagnate things. Vogrich and and LLP will need to put in the work over the summer since they’ll have some competition for P.T.

  • SJWolv

Anyone know how Horford and CB did in the playoffs tonight? I think JH was squaring off against Cole Darling and was wondering how he did.

  • Brian W

Painful screenshots Dylan. Not only can Evan Turner shoot, but he can move 10 feet in zero seconds. If the clock would have started when he caught the ball, he’d have been a little farther from the rim. Spartan Bob would be proud of that clock operator.

Looks like Grand Ledge and Holt started at 7 p.m. tonight, and Mlive doesn’t have a score for that game yet.

  • JB

southfield beat ferndale 97-65, brundidge scored 21

  • other steve

i feel really awful for deshawn sims. that must be a horrible way to lost in your last game…
we are only one game below .500 and i kind of feel like the NIT should allow us to get in… we showed that we are deserving today i think. just so that this wouldnt be the last game of the year. is there any chance we get in?

  • http://www.umhoops.com RS

The ending was tough to swallow. By checking the site just now, I decided to watch the final play numerous times. I am questioning the clock operator, which I did not question when watching it live this afternoon. By watching the replay, I decided to use a stopwatch after having some suspicion. By starting it immediately when Turner touched the ball, and stopping it right when he released the ball, I repeatedly kept getting a time over 2.2 seconds. I now just tried it watching it on TV at halftime of the MSU Minn game, and I got the same number, 2.37 seconds. Ridiculous that I spent the time to do this, but I think the clock operator was a touch slow and effected the final outcome.

  • Tom

The last play was super painful. Does anyone know what the rule is regarding the clock not starting on time? Can the officials rule that if the clock started on time that the actual shot would have been after time ran out and not count? I remember watching Butler-Xavier game in December and there was a bizarre sequence at the end of the game where the clock stopped in the middle of the play and the officials did not notice it. Butler went down the court and hit the winning shot with 1.2 seconds left (Shot was released with 1.5 seconds) The officials ruled that the clock inadvertently stopped for 1.3 seconds and that the shot was good but there was no time on the clock for Xavier to get the ball back. It seems like the officials could have done the same thing in this situation that Turner had possession of the ball for a few tenths of a second before the clock started.

  • Giddings

Just a quick note – how ironic is it that during the regular season, we go 0-11 when scoring less than 60 points and 12-0 when scoring more than 66 points, yet sure enough once it gets to the BTT we beat Iowa scoring only 59 and lose to OSU scoring 68, bucking both of those trends…

  • Evan

Grand Ledge lost 38-49 to holt dont have stats up yet

  • Giddings

BTW I really wish that the clock issue would have gotten more play in the media, not only to question the validity of OSU’s victory but also to distract the fans wanting Beilein kicked to the curb…

  • Brian W

Have to wonder if the Big Ten having its own TV network would stop the Big Ten Network analysts from being critical of a clock operator at its tournament. Maybe it doesn’t have an effect, though. I’ve been watching the MSU-Minnesota game and haven’t been watching ESPN to see if they mention anything about the clock starting late.

On my comments on Manny earlier, I agree with Tweeter that Manny sometimes defers too much, like the Illinois game at home. There are other times try to do too much, which leads to turnovers sometimes. It’s like trying to find the happy medium; where you can have contributions by other scorers (like Gibson and Stu today) and still have Manny get enough touches. Today he played a great game.

    Go Gophers. Beat Sparty.

  • other steve

god and now michigan state is going to lose. this would have been the perfect draw for us if we could have won the godforsaken game. Illinois tomorrow and if we win that either Minnesota (who we always beat) or Purdue (without Hummel). I just would like to know what couldve happened tomorrow had we been playing…

  • Evan

Sparty looses maybe this isn’t the worst day ever. All of a sudden I just got A lot happier

  • Evan

  • AG2

Sigh, couldn’t take advantage of a favorable BTT draw.

  • gpsimms

    jesus:

a final four of OSU (who we were 3 inches in any direction away from beating), ILL, MINNY (who we own), and a beat-up Purdue.

We coulda won this stinkin thing. Like really, we woulda had a chance.

I was there. It’s amazing how much everyone hates michigan. Not many OSU fans there, but everyone was cheering against Michigan anyway. I understand years of domination make people hate us, but like, OSU has dominated the big ten, too, and aren’t they like, way more eveil about their domination? I like to think of our reign like one of a benevolent master. ha

anyway. rough, rough rough day. So sad to see peedi go. I saw him walking down the street in indy with the team. I yelled from the car “Peedi I love you!”

He laughed, they seemed to be less crushed than we all are actually.

Anyway, at least it’s over. I am going to begin concocting reasons we can be back in the dance as soon as next year now.

  • http://www.umhoops.com RS

I’m pretty sure officials could review it, I feel that it must have been extremely difficult for the refs to notice it live. With what I found it was a few hundredths of a second late. Which does make a game changing difference, but tough to notice.

I just remembered ESPN replaying a possesion by OSU, when I think it was Turner, who’s heel stepped on the baseline, and then drew a foul. He made 1 for 2 on a shooting foul, but with the correct call there, it would have been a 3 point game on the final play, not 2. Pretty sure this was a play in the 2nd half.

What I would have done on the final play was to put our fastest player where Douglass was. That way, we could have had some token pressure in front of Turner and made it a bigger challenge. Douglass did everything he could, but he definitely is not U-M fastest player.

  • AG2

Wow, after looking at those Rivals postings it looks more like what happened in the Butler/Xavier game.

But Dylan you are right. I cannot imagine anything could make this team hungrier next season than what happened vs. OSU and MSU. I also hope that hunger extends to Horford/Smotrycz/Hardaway.

Still holding out hope for Zeigler but can’t shake the feeling that him and McCollum are a package deal.

  • ks

Caught the last two minutes on ESPN360 at work – cheering the comeback and cursing the loss was not a good career move.

Sad to see Sims go out like that. Best of luck to him. Any thoughts on his chances for the NBA? I think he was very consistant after the start of Big Ten play and UM’s best player as a result. Late 2nd rounder maybe?

This sentence almost made my day worse, but then I read the rest of the sentence:
In terms of what happens on the blog…
Great job the blog Dylan, looking forward to your analysis and posts in the offseason.

Glad to put the 09/10 season behind me. Here’s to 2010/11 and the resurrection of football and basketball…

  • Deacon Blues

I get 2.31 seconds, catch to release.

As for Beilein, though, he doesn’t get off the hook just because Turner hit a shot that had maybe a 20% chance of going in. It’s Beilein’s job to reduce those odds as much as possible, which he clearly could’ve done a better job of.

Think of it this way: If Ozzie Guillen leaves Linebrink in to face Curtis Granderson, instead of bringing in Thornton, is it unlikely if Granderson hits a game-winning homer? Sure. He hits .275 against righties, homering 6% of the time. But that hardly absolves Guillen of making a logical move that would’ve reduced those odds.

Thanks to Dylan for the great forum. Look forward to it next season.

  • Deacon Blues

That should read ” … hardly absolves Guillen of FAILING to make …”. My bad.

  • Joel

Lol that’s great gpsimms, you yelling @ Peedi. I was going out to Ann Arbor for the night so I wanted to know when the team bus was getting back so I could applaud them, but I couldn’t get any info (or maybe they’re still in Indy?).

@Giddings – yes, to me that’s extremely fitting and another cruel, bizarre twist to end our season on – to win with 59 and lose with 68. I feel like God is punishing us for something :P

As for the post-season, I guess I’d like to see us in the NIT, but if we don’t make that, let’s just let this season die already.

Also Dylan I too would like to join in thanking you for all the work you put into the website!

  • http://ufl.edu Mattski

    Lessons:

    1) It was all there for the taking, in every single game this year.

    2) We definitely didn’t take it.

    3) For some reason–in part because of this site–I found myself following and caring about this team more than I have any other, including our ill-fated footballs squads of the last few years.

    4) Iverson for Minnesota is gonna be a load the next few years. So is Draymond Green–a truck with dribbling skills. MSU plays well in spurts, but I don’t see them going far. Hope Minny squeezes in, if just to remind us we coulda been there.

    5) Manny please come back and do that sh*t over and over and over for one more year. This is your team if you want it.

    6) Next year Novak and Douglass are gonna shine once more. That was a tough loss, but a good one to carry into the off-season.

    7) A little bummed about the nastiness twd UM gpsimms writes about, above. Watching on TV, I thought the crowd was on our side. OSU is so obviously the villain in the piece–why doesn’t everyone else get that?

    8) Thanks, Dylan. This is a class joint.

  • http://umhoops.com Wayman Britt

In away I’m glad the season is over. Let’s put this season behind us and look to the future. Hopefully Beilein learned more about what it takes to win in the Big Ten.

    Beilein’s To Do List

    1. Drive to Mt Pleasant
    2. Stop in at Flint Powers on the way home
    3. Drive to DCD High School
    4. Visit every PSL coach

  • JimC

I wish Beilein would’ve taken at least a little of the blame yesterday.
But i guess that’s why we have Drew Sharp.

  • Heartbreak

Just FYI- heard that Beilein went to see Ziegler play again last night after the game then back to Indy with his team. They are putting in the time with this kid for sure!
I am so sick of Drew Sharp making an appearance in a column just to point fingers and be negative. I should be used to it by now…such poor journalism.

  • ToBlav

I don’t think blame has a role here. Coach Beilein gave his team a chance to win, that is the job. There is nothing to apoligize for, becasue the effort was great. Coach Matta should’ve said something about it being a great game and them getting lucky or at least fortunate. In stead he says, “we didn’t play well”, and comes of like a dweeb.

  • Paul

    Jon Horford update:
“Grand Ledge struggled to get 6-foot-9 center Jon Horford going offensively. He finished the final game of his standout prep career with 12 points and eight rebounds….. as Holt defeated Grand Ledge 49-38 [last] night”

  • Evan

Well sad ending to jon horfords career but now he has time to make a visit to um and get his offer and verbally commit.

  • http://umhoops.com Wayman Britt

Horford seems like an okay player and has good upside, but if we want to compete against MSU, OSU, Purdue and other top twenty teams in the nation we are going to need better talent.

  • Paul

    Wayman Britt – I agree 100%

  • trublu78

Please guys dont hate on Horford, I live 10 min from Grand Ledge, and he has game. I have watched him play.I would dare say hes in about the same shape his big bro was in leaving high school(a lil lighter), let him hit the weights and work hard and he could be just like Al. Great game guys, hope to see you back Manny.

  • http://ufl.edu Mattski

In retrospect, I have even less problem with Beilein’s end-of-game call (although if Drew Sharp becomes any more toxic toward Michigan, I think he’s gonna run the risk that some fan hornswoggles him). Given that Turner is a low pct. three-point shooter, I don’t think you necessarily even assume he takes the shot. . .

Twelve games decided by 8 or fewer points and we lost 8 of them.

I thought Manny’s statement that it wouldn’t be respectful to even discuss there in the aftermath was classy.

  • http://ufl.edu Mattski

discuss whether he (Manny) was staying or going, that is. . .

  • Brian W

Mattski good point on Turner’s normal 3-point percentage. If you leave Diebler open, Diebler can be deadly from long range, so you couldn’t leave him to double Turner. Hindsight is always perfect, though.

Someone mentioned Trey’s game last night. No one can deny that Beilein is willing to put the effort in on the recruiting and going out to see so many high school games. Here’s some of the article from Mlive about Trey’s game:

“After a buzzer-beating, one-point loss to Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament on Friday in Indianapolis, University of Michigan coach John Beilein traveled to Midland Dow and witnessed the latest in a long line of impressive performances by Mount Pleasant’s Trey Zeigler in the Class A boys basketball district final against Bay City Western.

Zeigler finished with 28 points and lifted Mount Pleasant to its fifth consecutive district championship with a 58-39 win over the Warriors.

Zeigler and Matthew Strickland combined for five 3-pointers in the third quarter to take control of the game. The Oilers ripped off a 22-2 run – highlighted by Zeigler’s two-handed dunk and 28-foot 3-pointer – to lead 42-23 entering the final stanza.

Mount Pleasant (20-3) heads to the regional at Bay City Central to face Flint Northwestern on Monday.”

  • http://ufl.edu Mattski

Two things we might deduce from Beilein’s assiduous courtship of Zeigler: a) we’re still in the hunt; and b) he hasn’t sealed the deal.

Do other people think these things seem to follow?

Doing my taxes, and taking breaks here–obsessively. I’ll shut up for a few days now!

  • fresh

great to see that every analyst i have seen is ruining beilein

Rough way to end the season. Freakin OSU. Just want to say great work Dylan and the crew. Enjoy your site more than any other on the Internet. I will have basketball season tickets Again next season. Maybe we all can get together sometime in Ann Arbor for a pep rally next season. As always Go Blue!

  • other steve

kind of confused at all the negativity towards beilein. i agree that it was a pretty bad decision to not guard the inbounder or at least make evan turner change directions… but seriously after seeing the replay i honestly believe turner took longer than 2.2 secs to get that shot off so maybe Beilein was hoping for something like that to happen. i dont know. but seriosly from everyone on ESPN to drew sharp bashing him and saying he should be fired over one play is ridiculous. if this is the type of season we have next year then yes maybe it is time to wonder… but seriously three years and he’s on the hot seat?

  • Brian W

Not sure if anyone saw this on Tim Hardaway Jr. in the freep. I don’t read them as much as I used to after they started their U-M witch-hunts, but I found this in a search. Rather than post the really long link, I’ll put some of Mark Snyder’s interview with Tim Hardaway Sr. here:

“He expanded his game a little bit and we want him to expand his game a little bit more and play with a lot more force, a lot more aggressiveness and play a lot harder.”

The plan is for Hardaway Jr., who will be joined in the class by big man Evan Smotrycz and probably another player or two from the late signing period, to arrive for summer school in June. His father said he’s currently 6-foot-5, but hasn’t gained much weight, staying at 175-185 pounds, a number they’re hoping to increase with a weight program.

As for his role in Beilein’s offense, that’s still to be determined.

“They are going to figure out once he gets on campus,” Hardaway Sr. said. “I like Beilein’s style. Just like Georgetown, everybody’s interchangeable. If you’re 6-5, you’re supposed to be able to do what a point guard can do or be able to distribute. You gotta be under control. That’s the way the game is supposed to be played. He can play 1, 2 or 3. But that’s not his great attribute. His attribute is coming down off screens, shooting the ball, getting into the lane. making shots in the lane, making threes. He’s a great shooter but he’s got to get a little bit stronger.”

  • other steve

i cant watch this anymore. illinois is playing horribly. goddang evan turner. but seriously i think ohio state is playing better so far than they did against us. still doesn’t make it hurt any less

  • Jake

its terrible sitting here and watching Illinois and OSU. You realize Michigan could have won this tournament even though it would have been tough to win 4 days in a row

  • Evan

    unbelievable game osu and illinois

  • Evan

dont give him 2.2 seconds illinois

  • michigan fan

I like Beilein and think in the long run he will be good for Michigan. I seriously doubt that had we beaten Ohio State yesterday, that we would have gone on to win the Big Ten Tournament. We probably would still have a losing record being on the outs for the NIT. Nevertheless, I think it’s obvious that he did a poor job coaching at the end of the game yesterday. He gave Ohio State a “most difficult” shot to make versus what we should have given them was a “prayer”. A win would have just felt good.

  • other steve

agree michigan fan. thinking about it a day later and watching illinois we might not have won this game today. it would have been nice to have a chance but im looking ahead to next year.

  • Evan

i hate ohio state even more now

  • Adam

Watching Minnesota lead Purdue 26-4 just makes you think what could have been…

  • other steve

seriously. how the heck did we beat this minnesota team down? i know purdue is just playing horrendously but wow… i dont know if we would have beaten illinois but i sure would have liked a shot… then we would get to play minnesota (most likely). just like last year. a play in game against minnesota. that wouldve been fun. oh well

  • http://wolverineliberationarmy.com Musket Rebellion

other steve – You criticize Beilein for not forcing Ohio State into a prayer situation (forgetting that a running 38 footer is pretty much a prayer) and yet you can’t give him credit for destroying what is clearly a pretty good Minnesota team. This isn’t a one way street. I know this has been said before, but it was Beilein’s coaching that put us within 2.2 seconds of beating the #6 team in the country. Is it sad that we lost? Yes. Do knee jerk reactions of “FIRE BEILEIN RABBLE RABBLE!” fix anything? No.

  • ZRL

Bruce Webber made 2 coaching decisions that were a lot worse then any decision Beilein made yesterday when he failed to call timeout when Illinois had the ball at the end of regulation and the end of overtime. In both situations the Illini weren’t even able to get a shot off. However, I don’t hear anyone screaming “FIRE BRUCE WEBBER!!!”.

  • Evan

o man now that purdue is done minnesotas in the championship game. imagine us vs minnesota in the championship game.

  • http://www.umhoops.com RS

All the bashing on Beilein is wayyy overboard. Of course, Sharp, analysts, the 97.1 afternoon hosts, have not mentioned a word about the progress we made last season, even though we did regress this season.

If you look at big games coached by Beilein outside of the Big ten teams that are not too familiar with his style, he has done very well. For example, UConn this year, and UConn last year. We were overmatched big time last year when we travled to uconn, and gave them one heck of a fight. We were mixing 3 defenses- man to man, 2-3 zone, and the 1-3-1 zone. Same with Oklahoma last year in round 2 of March Madness when they had Griffin, who could not be stopped by anyone. He had a great scheme against him and if I remember correctly, we didn’t stop him, but we definitely contained him. I have faith in Beilein big time.

  • Brian W

After reading what Deshawn and Darius said in an article by Rothstein this afternoon, it provides some insight on why the off-season is so important.

    http://www.annarbor.com/sports/um-basketball/its-season-over-michigan-basketball-players-dissect-what-went-wrong

Last summer, Manny participated in the Lebron James Camp, Peedi played in a big man camp, and most of the other guys, like Novak, went home to work on their games. Judging by Deshawn’s comments (that the team had no chemistry at the start of the season because they hadn’t played a lot with each other before the season), I’d hope that most or all of the guys stick around Ann Arbor this summer and play together more.

The individual camps didn’t appear to help the chemistry. They’re going to be incorporating more freshmen and red-shirt freshmen into the lineup next year, so it will be beneficial for them to get an idea as to where someone likes to get the ball in the post or where someone likes shoot on the floor. It sounds like Darius plans to exert some leadership in the offseason and wants the upperclassmen to do the same. Novak and Douglass are going into their junior years, so they can provide more influence on the direction of the offseason workouts when the coaches can’t be around. Lifting weights and conditioning are important; teaching the defenses and offensive plays to the freshmen would be a good thing to do too. Just my two cents.

  • jmblue

I’ve got no problem with not guarding the inbounder. Since it was after a made basket, Lighty was allowed to run the baseline and negate whatever pressure we’d have offered. If it had been a regular inbounds play, THEN I’d have put a guy on him.

As far as denying Turner the ball and/or forcing him to pass, I don’t know. He had the lowest 3-point shooting percentage of any OSU player on the floor. We forced a poor 3-point shooter to take a prayer of a shot. Can’t really gripe about that.

  • other steve

Musket Rebellion– i am giving credit to Beilein. He has always had Minnesota’s number and has always had us ready to play well against them. I am definitely giving him credit for those games. All I said was that Belein should have probably played a man defense. And pressured Turner on the way up the court. His shot was lucky but it wasn’t a prayer. He was able to shoot it like a normal shot. It was definitely a lucky shot but it was inside half court. I definitely have faith in Beilein and the guys to turn it around. I think Manny stays to help wash away this bad season next year.

  • SteinerBlue

Thanks to Brian W for posting that article. It was a very insightful look, from the players perspective, of what the heck happened this year. I bet they won’t let it happen again.

  • http://ufl.edu Mattski

The rationale behind NOT guarding the man coming up the floor is that you have more guys down in shooting range to prevent–it puzzles me that the critics don’t at least not that this is one oft-used and perfectly plausible approach. Respectfully, Other Steve, that is not a ‘normal shot.’ He gets extremely good extension and follow-through on it, just as you would want. But watch him as he extends through it, and stop the video when he’s fully extended. That’s nothing like a normal shot for a simple reason–he had to push very hard to get sufficient force as he let go.

With all of Turner’s recent theatrics, everyone seems to have forgotten that OSU has a bunch of NBA prospects on that team. I was expecting Buford to get the shot. Anyway, criticism is cool–like I said before, the strategy didn’t work so criticism follow. The meanness is a little shocking, though (viz Drew Sharp). America’s favorite sport, I sometimes think, is piling on.

  • cy

Go San Diego State! Bring back Steve Fish and the FAB FIVE!

  • The Yooper

My high school is playing Ogemaw Heights in our first regional game on Monday. They have a University of Michigan football recruit, Anthony Zettel. 6’4, 250 lb 4 star linemen. Should be interesting considering we have a 6’5, 260lb linemen who has a scholarship to Central Michigan.

  • RB

Well said Mattski. Agree with it or not, there is logic behind how Beilein defended that. The strategy pretty much did what it was intended to do, give up a loosely contested 40 footer in exchange for a vastly decreased chance of fouling and taking away OSU’s opportunity to run a Laetner/Bryce Drew type of play to get a better shot.

I would have played man in that situation (without guarding the inbounder). But you can definately make an argument that Beilein made a sound decision.

I had a much bigger problem with Beilein going 1-3-1 at the end of the MSU game at Chrisler.

I think Beilein is a good coach, but honestly I wish he would just scrap the 1-3-1 for good. I really like the man D they played since the Kansas game. If we play with an adequate sized PF, I think man D could be a strength next year.

Also, please no more small ball!

  • Giddings

    ESPN “update” on Trey: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recruiting/basketball/mens/news/story?id=4988882

(not really an update but more of a breakdown of his 5 most probable destinations – U-M, UCLA, MSU, CMU, Duke)

  • rlc

After sleeping on it (and waking up thinking about it) the one thing I wish UofM had done differently was to have a defender pick up Buford in the back court; then he and Douglass could have switched on the screen and kept more pressure on Turner. It might have helped.

  • Jake

right now i see Trey’s top two as UCLA and Michigan. I think it is a real big factor that his dad worked under howlnd for three years and thats why i see him and ray mccallum meeting up on the west coast… Hopefully im wrong!

  • other steve

Mattski you’re right that isn’t a normal shot. i guess i should have said it looked like a normal shot. in no way was that a prayer. it was a very lucky and tough shot but it did have somewhat of a normal look to it. either way it was lucky. oh well.

  • Brian W

U-M’s game against Indiana in 1976 NCAA Finals on Big Ten Network now. Short shorts and big fros. Thank God, there aren’t shorts like that any more.

  • cy

slept on it and still think Belien made a huge mistake. I would rather take a chance on a full court toss to the other end of the court, which has a much lower percentage of even being caught than a pass to the opposing free throw/three pt line, taking a couple dribbles and getting a perfect look at a basket… horrible coaching!!!!!!

  • Giddings

Could UCLA take both Zeigler and McCallum? Could they even take one of them?

They have three seniors leaving (Roll, Keefe, and Dragovic), but they have three 2010 commits already (Josh Smith, Tyler Lamb, and Lazeric Jones). Apparently Mustafa Abdul-Hamid, a RS Junior, will be leaving a la Ant Wright, so that opens up one more schollie. Thus the only way that UCLA has room for both Zeigler and McCallum is if a current Bruin goes to the NBA (Honeycutt, Nelson, Lee? – all unlikely) or transfers.

  • AG2

Seeing SDSU tournament bound once more, I wonder how many of you guys miss Steve Fisher?

  • http://wolverineliberationarmy.com Musket Rebellion

Steve Fisher was a hell of a coach, if he had been as clean as Beilein is who knows where the program would be right now. Unfortunately, it was probably some of that lack of cleanliness that brought in the great recruits he was able to get.

other steve – I’m sorry a 38 foot jumper isn’t enough of a prayer for you. My mistake.

  • Evan

I hear some may transfer from ucla

  • Joel

OMG Minnesota in the title game….no fair.

@ToBlav I actually found Matta’s postgame comments mostly humble and appropriate. They didn’t play that well and didn’t really deserve to win, before that shot.

    @cv A “perfect” look at the basket….from 37 feet…

1 – Douglas did get his hand in his a face a bit.
2 – It’s from 37 FEET. I’d take them shooting a “perfect” look from 37 feet over a bad look @ 10/12/14 ft. It wasn’t THAT bad of coaching. From what I heard Webber’s job for Illinois @ the end against OSU was worse. Like rlc said it may have been better to have a 2nd man in the back court to help out on the screen but still, Turner just got lucky.

Man if Minnesota beats Ohio St in the championship game it will be even more painful, but I’d still rather see them win it then the Luckeyes. Also – it’s going to suck next year when we play Ohio St again, or maybe even in our first televised game, cause you KNOW they’re gunna show that shot like 8 times. Ugh.

  • Brian W

Steve Fisher seemed like a nice guy and was a good coach, but he was also the definition of “Lack of Institutional Control.” There were things going on around the program that he turned a blind eye to; kids who supposedly couldn’t afford a $4 pizza were driving expensive vehicles. He wasn’t the Tim Floyd-style offender, where Floyd “allegedly” authorized cash to a player. Fisher, in my opinion, just didn’t pay attention to what was going on around the program and question things that should have raised some red flags. Fisher did have some really good assistants, like Perry Watson and Jay Smith, when he was at U-M.

Moving on to the present day… Looks like Evan Smotrycz was nominated for the McDonald’s All-American Team. There were a lot of others nominated, but still it’s nice when experts around the country think you’re worthy.

    http://www.newenglandrecruitingreport.com/news/article/1224/McDonalds-Nominees-Announced.php

  • mike

Musket Rebellion–I have to respectfully disagree with you about Steve Fisher being a great coach. In fact, I think he was terrible with x’s and o’s. Clearly he recruited well, and his easy going persona allowed free spirits on the team to do their thing. But the main reason why he won so much was because he had exceptionally talented players. I attended every Michigan home game under Fisher and I was astounded by what little his did as a coach during the games and how his decisions were ill informed. In all honesty anyone could have coached the Fab Five and looked smart. Fisher never had much success after he left the (tainted) talent pool of Michigan. His Michigan players were very undisciplined, did not learn fundamentals, and I think suffered for it at the professional level. Fisher in my mind–Nice guy, corrupt system, nothing to offer as a coach. Try to imagine John Calipari as a nice guy. That’s Fischer. Riding on the talent

  • Brian W

It sounds like UCLA hasn’t had a happy bunch of players all year. Doesn’t sound like Howland has been connecting with his players.

    http://www.bruinsnation.com/2010/3/11/1367741/poor-communication-unhappy-players

The Wolverine has something about Trey in an update today.

  • AG2

For all that happened with Fisher in charge, I don’t think its disputable that what really killed this program was hiring Brian Ellerbe. You can’t blame Ellerbe for being who he was, but someone had to realize giving the keys to a guy who was 5-6 months removed from being fired by a D2 school wasn’t good for business.

  • Brian W

Yup. Tom Goss made some bad decisions as athletic director, including Ellerbe. Fortunately, those times are over, and we’ll have a new practice facility and remodeled Crisler Arena in a few years. Things didn’t go well this year, but I think the players are motivated to get better.

  • http://wolverineliberationarmy.com Musket Rebellion

Mike – Steve Fisher has taken SDSU to the tourney the last two years. SDSU. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you what their athletic programs are like.

I will agree that “great” coach was not the correct word usage, but pretty good will suffice. We only missed the tourney once while he was here. Violations aside, we achieved a lot while he was here, if you take a non-traditional basketball school to the tourney all but one year of your tenure, I think that speaks volumes.

  • Joel

Wow is anyone watching the SEC championship game?? I can’t cause there’s no online stream and I’m not by a TV but from the GameChannel the end of regulation was all kinds of crazy: UK down 3 with 7 sec, Miss St (wisely) fouls. UK makes a free throw, intentionally misses the 2nd, Wall gets an offensive board and shoots a 3 to win, misses, but it’s tipped in as time expires to force OT. Sucks big time for Miss St if they lose, they might still get in the tourney with a close lose but it’s dicey. Still down to the wire in the 1st OT now…

  • maxwell’s demon

Is anyone else baffled by why Calipari set up that last in bounds for Cousins?

  • Giddings

Too bad for Mississippi State, I really hope they get in as an at-large now. I do think they could have waited just a little longer to foul, but other than that, quite a tough loss. Wall’s ridiculously lucky off-balance 3 in OT really sealed the deal. I hate Calipari…

  • Joel

Yeah I’m sick of these “top teams” getting lucky. But I guess that’s part of why they’re a top team if they can somehow find a way to win.

  • JRose

Anyone else notice that Bledsoe crossed the foul line before the ball hit the rim…should’ve been State ball!

  • jk

who do you think plays center next year? I’ve made a starting 5: C- Jordan Morgan? PF- Evan Smotrycz SF- Manny Harris (if he doesn’t go pro) SG- Trey Zeigler or Stu Douglass if Zeigler doesn’t come PG- Darius Morris Novak starts once in a while and gets hustle points as a 6th man. Vogrich is more confident and can come in for a three pointer or two and Horford and Hardaway could potentially do some damage as well. I like where 2010-2011 is going. ***also, is kelvin grady coming back as a walk on or something? I remember when he was going to return back to basketball, but I wasn’t sure.

  • AG2

Someone must have taught OSU how to start the layup line on Minnesota.

  • rlc

“Anyone else notice that Bledsoe crossed the foul line before the ball hit the rim…should’ve been State ball!”

They need to get some Pac-10 refs in there – they were all over that yesterday at the end of the Cal-Washington game.

  • JeremyC

Don’t forget about Mclimans he can be a contributer off the bench!!! If Ziegler doesn’t come what about Rotnei Clarke from Arkansas I seen he is considering transferring and is a John Beilein type player who can shoot the 3 well!!

  • Dylan

Hadn’t heard about Clarke. Seems like his transfer situation isn’t final yet either. He’s one of the best three point shooters but he’s only 6-foot. Not sure how that would effect roster composition. Definitely a lights out shooter but who knows where he would want to go.

  • http://ufl.edu Mattski

Two pieces of encouraging news: Smotrycz nominated for McDonald’s All-American is great. I thought he had faded a little this year. . . And if UCLA is having problems, my hopes for Ziegler rise. The more I learn about him the more impressed I am. If Beilein is going to his games, we’re still in the hunt. Plus, I’ll bet his dad wants to get to see some of his games. Girlfriend AND best friend here? C’mon! And I know he likes Manny, too.

Don’t give up on the 1-3-1 just yet. Let’s get a quick, tall team in and see how it works.

  • JayRich

I know it hurt this year but I am really excited that McLimans and Morgan red-shirted. I reallt think McLimans will play a nice backup role next year. Still needs some meat on the frame but will play some. I think if Horford comes, he is a redshirt and we rotate Mclimans, Morgan, and Smotrycz with Novak getting a little run at 4 when we go small. Horford is a little bit of a project and I think a redshirt year would be great for him to adjust ala McLimans.

Mattski, I totally agree with you on the 1-3-1. If we can get Manny to really want to play D…he could do some damage running the baseline. Who do you put in the middle when McLimans and Morgan are in together or do you just not run it then?

  • http://umhoops.com Wayman Britt

After watching the Selection Show, it’s a disgrace that the University of Michigan can’t build a basketball program to be in that tournament at least every other year; if not, every year.

Especially with the basketball talent we have in this state. I hope this is a major priority of Mr. Brandon’s.

  • Mith

Who says they haven’t, WB? All the breaks went against us this year and this team never really got it together. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if 2010-11 was a similar season to last year.

  • fresh

the 1-3-1 is going to be a great defensive scheme when you get the right guys to play it…………thats going to win michigan games eventually………….really cant wait to see what happen when players with height have consistent solid mins

  • fresh

you want as much height and length on the court as possible especially for the 1-3-1 thats how ground is covered and you take up space and create difficulties for the other team to score, plus i also think mclimans is going to be a much bigger factor than people think……….hes tall and can shoot and i suspect by next season weight is not going to be an issue……..post moves i would hope are his main concern at this point

  • AG2

I know OSU ran 1-3-1 zone and they’re really big all over the court.

Won’t save them from a 2nd round loss to Oklahoma State though…
