VIDEO: Cody Zeller vs. Southridge

Dylan Burkhardt

Of course our guest contributor just had to one up us with the recruiting video. Josh’s film of Cody Zeller is brought to you in crystal clear high definition. Because we posted a lot of recruiting content this weekend, here’s an “in-case-you-missed-it” listing of the rest of it:

  • Pingback: Scouting Cody Zeller vs. Southridge | UM

  • The full game will be posted to mgovideo eventually. Josh is also working on finishing a dedicated capture machine in order to capture Michigan basketball and football games in HD for mgovideo. The problem, he’s a little bit short on funds and is looking for donations. Find out more information over here in this mgoblog thread.

I’m sure he can give you details here as well.

You can also visit the MGoVideo thread, if you have an account. The donation address is in there.

Thanks again for the mention, Dylan.

I just flipped to the local news in time to watch Jon Horford stuff Ladontae Henton. Beilein was in attendence.

  • ZRL

If the reason that Beilein has yet to offer Horford is because he is waiting to scout some European bigs during the off-season, when will we know what Euros he is scouting? Do you remember when the name Robin Benzing first came up?

  • Bluebufoon

Beilein goes to Europe every year right after the NCAA Tournament. So the rumors U-M was in on a European didn’t start to leak until sometime in late April or early May if I remember correctly but it was a couple weeks after that before we found out that Benzing was the guy.

Posted this on the other thread but Beilein was in Grand Ledge Monday scouting Horford again.

This is why I have to trust the coaches when it comes to recruiting. I really couldn’t see much of a difference between Zeller and Horford.

  • Sees the court well. Good patience. Little wasted motion. Maybe more immediate contribution than from Horford, who I was impressed by.

  • Beilein (and has now been out to see Horford (a couple times?0, Amir Williams, and Cody Zeller in the last month or so.

Remember, Zeller and Williams are a year younger than Horford.

The fact that Beilein went out to see Horford today obviously means he’s still interested, we’ll see how it plays out.

  • Bluebufoon

Zeller looks stronger than Horford in the upper body and more fluid from the perimeter JH but of course its not where these guys are now, its where they project down the road, plus we don’t really know how interested Zeller is do we ?

What I like about Horford is his passing and ball-handling ability. Supposedly prior to the season Horford was up to 225-pounds but has had trouble maintaining the weight during the season and of course his brother and father filled out nicely. Agree with those that say if Horford wants to be a Wolverine– take him. That gives you one more next year for another front-court player which hopefully is either Amir, Plumlee, Zeller or Gant (I’m not giving up on him– yet).

  • Drew

Dylan, what did you think about the mention at the end of the GL-Eastern article that mentioned Michigan is also interested in Henton? Any truth or substance behind this? I’m from that area and have been hearing about Henton since he was in like 8th grade, but I don’t see him fitting Beilein’s system at all.

  • I agree with you, I don’t really see Henton fitting in. I think I wrote something about him after the last Lansing Eastern/Grand Ledge game (

I still can’t believe Grand Ledge smoked Eastern like that. Showing interest is a pretty vague term, they are probably watching him at least.

  • Drew

Yea I was also baffled by that final score. Tucker is apparently pretty good though and he didn’t play, along with another one of their shooters. Probably had a lot to do with it. 37 for Henton is insane. I imagine he took an ungodly amount of shots though.

  • Cha Cha Tucker is definitely a baller. He’s young and doesn’t have a shot yet but he’ll be a good one.

  • Drew

Good Christ Dylan, why’d you have to tweet that link to the NCAA Vault thing? This thing is HEAVEN. Whole games? I have an exam this afternoon and two more tomorrow…. how am I supposed to study?

  • Andy

I would say that Southridge (whoever they might be) plays the laziest zone I’ve ever seen in my life.

  • MaizeNBlue2

If anyone wants to donate, I would really appreciate it. I’m starting to run out of room to store the games. I have two games sitting from the last week (@ Iowa and vs. Penn State). I’ll be recording the game tonight vs. Illinois, plus I still have the full game of Zeller vs. Southridge that I’m going to upload.

None of it can be done until I get the software purchased. I’m only $70 short of being able to purchase it. If you don’t want to follow the links to get the info, you can send your donation via PayPal to jwhouchin at gmail dot com.

    Thanks guys.

IMO we don’t need these types of players.
Yeh he’s tall but he’s slow-footed, he’s not very physical, there’s little intimidation created, he can’t jump much, and in a big physical league (like the Big 10) you’ve just got to be a HORSE to compete in the paint. He would be eaten alive much like Gibson was for much of his career. We need players with some dynamics to their game. This kid can shoot it and looks to be a good passer (I know Beilein loves these things) but as long as we keep taking kids in this same mold (Gibson, Cronin, and I know we haven’t seen Mclimans yet but I’m throwing him in here) I don’t think we’re ever gonna be anything more then a .500 team.

  • MaizeNBlue2

Yes, Gibson has been abused for much of his career (he also wasn’t a Beilein recruit, he was here before JB was even hired), but we haven’t even seen any of the other guys. Cronin was never healthy and McLimans hasn’t stepped foot on the floor yet.

Also, let’s not forget that Zeller’s a junior in high school. There’s plenty of time for him to improve in the areas that you seem to think are weaknesses. I agree, he needs a bit more of a mean streak like Tyler has, but to make all of these judgments from seeing 3.5 minutes of video from one game is a little absurd if you ask me.

Now, with all this said, I think it’s a moot point, because I doubt we’re going to end up getting him. Also, after watching Zeller in person, and seeing video of Amir Williams, I’d definitely rather have Amir at this point. But, to decline a 4-star who has offers from pretty much everyone in the Midwest would be a dumb decision.

  • I was definitely impressed with Zeller. I thought he seemed very active and aware for a guy his size as only a junior in high school. Not sure how you came away with Zack Gibson…

  • MaizeNBlue2

Kind of what I was thinking, Dylan.
