Game 21: Iowa at Michigan Open Thread

manny-peedi

I set this up so that the in-game comments can live at the top of the page. Preview is here. Jon Horford scouting report is here. Tip off is 4:35 PM EST on the Big Ten Network.

  • Gavin Groninger

all our tournament hopes rest on this game’s outcome!!!!!!!!11111bbq

  • Andy

I think our tourney hopes right on every game from this point out. I agree Thunder, it’s pretty bleak, but a 20-10 team on a 10 game winning streak that included wins at OSU, MSU, NW, and Minnesota would look pretty good to the committee, no? There’s a difference between ridiculously small hopes and none at all.

  • JimC

M bounces back today to break the 3-game losing streak!

(I have to get my in-game comment in early, b/c i’m going to TC Gators sport bar, Canton, MI)

  • Nick

We are not making the tourney this year unless we somehow win the BTT.

  • JRose

Great start! good to see Stu hit his first 3!

  • beileinomics

    Showing Iowa no mercy now.

  • JRose

    Lets not let up…ie. Northwestern!

  • beileinomics

Man, almost 10 min w/o a fg for Iowa. Let’s pour it on.

  • JB

we’re showing a ton of improvement. i know it’s iowa, but we’re playing our best ball of the season.

  • maxwell’s demon

Let’s get this back to 15 by half. Manny looking pretty mediocre.

  • AG2

We’re getting careless. Its only a matter of time before Iowa starts lighting it up from 3. They are a much better shooting team than we are so no lead is safe if we don’t keep at it.

  • other steve

im sorry… where has this effort been all year? now that we are fighting for our tournament lives we decided to step it up… if we had played this year earlier we are in the NCAA’s for sure. we beat alabama, boston college, utah, indiana, and northwestern. thats five wins which makes our record 15-5 and 6-3 in the big ten. seriously this is the team i expected all year… good effort and defense.

  • maxwell’s demon

Weak finish. I’m starting to hope Manny does leave for the NBA.

  • Ryan

Maxwell I agree, as good as he can be, I think he brings the team down some of the time.

  • AG2

Last 6 mins of the half were a disgrace. You don’t think Iowa can outscore us by 12 in the 2nd half? Keep committing stupid turnovers like that and watch Iowa hit 4 3′s in a row.

Stay hungry guys, please finish this.

  • http://www.umhoops.com Dylan

Michigan playing great defense. Iowa only scoring .5 points per trip. But michigan’s offense sputtered into neutral for the last 10 minutes. Offensive execution needs to be better. Manny was great for the first bit then started forcing things, trying to male the fancy play, and missing layups.

Hope these guys remember Northwestern. The three keeps anyone in the game.

  • http://www.umhoops.com Dylan

Also the last two possessions were pathetic.

  • http://umhoops.com Wayman Britt

I’m glad to be up, but we got very careless and sloppy. We just don’t finish. We should be up by more.

  • AG2

Absolutely brutal game for Udoh today. 0-8 so far as Baylor’s letting their lead slip away.

  • http://www.umhoops.com Dylan

Trey Zeigler in the house for this one.

  • Ken in Vegas

    How’s the crowd?

  • http://www.wolverineliberationarmy.com Musket Rebellion

Remember when we were worried about where all the minutes were going to come from for all of our players? That was nice.

Good to see the guys come out and play hard so far.

  • JRose

Good to hear TZ is in the house! Commit today!

  • maxwell’s demon

Hell of a team effort. I want to punish them until the clock reads 0.

  • eddie

Hate to say it, but for those who lust for the Amaker days, they need to look no further than the Iowa offense. Their lack of scoring, lack of offensive organization, and their failure to get anything going reminds me exactly of UM during the Amaker days.

  • JRose

Eddie is exactly right! I was thinking the same thing.

  • Giddings

Sizeable crowd on hand but it’s been quiet all game, even during our runs. We could be showing Trey much better…

  • http://www.umhoops.com Dylan

Yeah forgot to mention. Trey is wearing a blue hat with a yellow M. Michigan? Or Mt Pleasant?

  • http://wolverineliberationarmy.com Musket Rebellion

If only you had brought your binoculars. I’m guessing Mt. Pleasant would have an M and a P, but high school teams often steal the color and template schemes of local universities.

  • maxwell’s demon

So I’ll admit that I’ve paid closer attention to Michigan basketball games before, but has Vogrich not played?

  • Nick

Our defense has really improved as this year has gone along…it’s too bad our shooting never did or we could be 15-6.

  • Giddings

I’m surprised Vogrich hasn’t seen more time. He was in there for the last few seconds if the first half.

  • other steve

and this is the team that beat indiana at indiana… goodness gracious how did we lose some of the games we lost…

  • Jeff

We actually have been playing a lot better lately, just doesn’t feel that way because of the two heart-breaking losses. The team defense is night and day better than it was a month ago.

Not to be mean, but Iowa has some really goofy looking guys on its team. Some of those guys just do not look like basketball players.

    Boring game, but encouraging.

  • AG2

Nice win but it left me wanting more. On to Evanston where we owe NW nothing less than a blowout.

  • Giddings

All those “fans” who predicted a double digit win for Iowa look pretty stupid right now…

  • JimC

Maxwell & Giddings, i kept waiting for Vogrich Time too, but it didn’t happen until the garbage mins. Kinda weird. Maybe he’s sick or something.

  • http://umhoops.com Wayman Britt

For those at the game, did the student section chant anything to Trey Ziegler? Hopefully they had some nice chants to welcome him to Crisler.

  • Tweeter

just got back from game. Crowd was completely listless today. Didnt know Ziegler was there, noticed some football recruits but not Ziegler. Also Jonas Jerebko was back in the house (maybe we can sneak him in a game here at some point).

Defense was good again today. Offense looked really passive and careless at times. Harris looked like he couldnt walk and talk at the same time. He really struggled with his handle all day. Morris made some nice passes, but darnit, he has to shoot some of those layups. Gibson made two really good hustle plays on the same possession. Wright looked like good ole Wright today. One terrible mistake at the end of the half where he went for a steal on the inbounds instead of just letting the guy catch it and fouling him.

Was Vogrich sick? doghouse? He got in at the end of the half to foul, but nothing beyond that.

7-2 the rest of the way guys! Go Blue!

  • Austin

I don’t know if I am just being inexplicably optimistic, but I feel like we can win 7 more games, if we continue to bring a top notch effort every game. I know it’s a long shot, but as a Bulls fan, I didn’t expect them to win 5 road games along the West Coast either. They had a 486-1 chance, and they did. So, if the boys bring the thunder for every game, why not? Let’s get to 18-12 and bring some noise to the BTT.

    Go Blue!

  • http://umhoops.com Wayman Britt

Tweeter: I assume if you didn’t know Ziegler was there, the students probably didn’t do the “We want Ziegler” chant. If they didn’t do the chant, that is terrible and weak. I guarantee the MSU students would have been cheering for him the whole game.

  • Tweeter

Yea Wayman I dont know. I certianly did not notice any chant for Ziegler coming from the student section, but sometimes I am oblivious to such things. So it is possible I just missed it. But it definitely was not happenning all game like you say would happen at State.

I also did not see Grady on the bench. I have no idea where that situation is at, and if Grady will be do anything more than just practicing.

  • http://www.umhoops.com Dylan

Grady is a practice player at this point. If he sits on the bench he loses 3 hours (the count goes for football+hoops) so he has to go as a fan. He can’t be told to come to games.

  • Loving the Blue

Solid win today. It was nice to see us come out with some excitement. But it was Iowa at home.

1-6 in games decided by 6 points or fewer. For me that stat sums up the year. You’ve got to be able to finish close games.

  • AG2

NW is strong (only down 2 @ MSU at the half) but beatable.

  • Giddings

No chants for Zeigler unfortunately. I don’t think many people realized he was there, plus 3/4 of the students were basically asleep for the whole game. I know it was a boring game but I was pretty disapponted.

  • http://umhoops.com Wayman Britt

Thanks for the updates on Zeigler. That’s extremely disappointing that the students did not chant for him. I thought each student section was suppose to have a leader. These leaders dropped the ball on this one. We need to do everything we can legally to get this kid to UM or it’s really really going to be a long season next year.

  • AG2

In other news, Brandon Graham was the MVP of the Senior Bowl. Not surprising he carried our D this year.

  • maxwell’s demon

8-0 in conference = average? How unclutch was Kansas down the stretch here. Home loss to Baylor is also further evidence that Rick Barnes has no idea what to do with the talent he’s brought in.

  • maxwell’s demon

Well Collins made up for it there. But that has to be one of the worst coaching decisions I have ever seen not to foul by KSU.

  • AG2

Collins is far and away better than John Wall. Frankly, I’d take Kalin Lucas over John Wall, too.

And Maxwell you hit the nail right on the head. Rick Barnes epitomizes the label “recruiting coordinator masquerading as a head coach.”
