John Beilein has reeled in two commitments in the class of 2010 with Evan Smotrycz and Tim Hardaway Jr. Michigan is now tight on scholarships (scholarship breakdown) with only one to give. At this point it appears that they will have to be selective with how to use the final scholarship, the top two candidates are Trey Zeigler and Casey Prather. If Michigan misses out on those two, it might be best to just bank the remaining scholarship for the loaded class of 2011.

Smotrycz is a 6-foot-9 forward who appears to be the perfect fit for the four position in John Beilein’s offense. He is skilled with the ball, even playing point forward at times, and also has a sweet jumper from the outside. Smotrycz was unranked when he committed to Michigan but has soared up the charts after playing very well during the spring and summer AAU circuit. Smotrycz performed well at the NBA Top 100 Camp and the Vince Carter Skills Academy and has turned himself into a consensus top 75 prospect.

Tim, the son of the former NBA star, is a strong shooting guard that will be a welcome addition in Ann Arbor. Hardaway is long and has above average athleticism but his handle is probably the weakest link at this point. With his height and length he could most likely play at either the two guard or on the wing at the three. Hardaway committed shortly after earning his offer at Michigan’s Elite and Team camp.

Trey Zeigler has been at the top of Michigan’s 2010 recruiting board for sometime. With his athleticism and offensive skills he appears to be the natural fit to be groomed to be “the next Manny Harris.” Zeigler is a smooth offensive player who can score the ball at will and potentially could play the one, two, or three.
Zeigler has been to Ann Arbor a number of times and appears to be very interested in Michigan. Other schools on his list include Michigan State, Central Michigan, LSU, Arizona State, UCLA, and Arizona. Zeigler plans to take several other visits before potentially making a decision this fall.

Prather is a bit raw offensively but he is in a league of his own athletically. If Zeigler is #1 on Michigan’s board, Prather is #1a. The Tennessee native has received offers from Memphis, Vanderbilt, and Michigan among others. UNC has also recruited Prather but they have not offered. The big step for Michigan is to get Prather up to Ann Arbor for a visit.

Ray McCallum
Point Guard, 6-foot-1, 179 lbs
Detroit Country Day HS
Scout: 4 star, #26
Rivals: 4 star, #46
ESPN: 95/100, #20
In an era of combo guards, McCallum is a pure point guard. No doubt learning from his father, head coach at the University of Detroit, McCallum is a great floor general.
McCallum has long been considered a Kansas lean but he has not made a commitment. There is always the chance that he could play for his dad at Detroit as well. Other suitors include Duke, Arizona, Oklahoma, USC, UCLA among many others.

Devin Oliver

Scout: 3 star
Rivals: NR
Oliver is a slender wing from Kalamazoo who played very well down the stretch in the high school state tournament. Oliver isn’t quite the level of prospect that Prather and Zeigler are but he has continued to improve. Michigan would take him in a heartbeat on the Kalamazoo Promise, however there may be more appealing offers out there for Mr. Oliver.

Allen Payne
Small Forward, 6-foot-7, 200lbs
Winton Woods, OH
Scout: 2 star
Rivals: 3 star
ESPN: 87/100
An athletic wing from Ohio, Payne has been on Michigan’s radar for sometime. At 6-foot-7 he is a little bigger than some of Michigan’s other wing targets but he appears to be a plan B guy at this time. Payne recently attended Michigan’s Elite Camp and has previously visited.

Richard Solomon
Power Forward/Center, 6-foot-9, 200 lbs
Frederick K C Price HS, Los Angeles CA
Scout: 4 star, #81
Rivals: 4 star, #81

One of the fastest risers this Spring on the west coast. Solomon is a versatile big man who oozes with potential. He is a bit raw at this time but his potential is high enough that many high majors are interested.

A shooting guard target that once appeared to be a little higher on Michigan’s radar. Ayers’ Michigan recruitment appears to have slowed down with both parties moving in other directions.

Moses Morgan

Palo Verde High School, Nevada

Scout: 3 star
Rivals: 3 star, #122
ESPN: 91/100
The Nevada native is a smooth scorer on the wing with great size that doesn’t always play up to his full potential. Michigan appeared to be in great shape with Moses’ recruitment when he visited last fall but he recently named Indiana his leader. Moses’ father played ball at Indiana so this isn’t necessarily that surprising. Texas Tech, Marquette, and Utah have also offered while Oklahoma, Texas, and USC are showing interest.
Adreian Payne
Center, 6-foot-10, 215 lbs
Dayton, OH
Scout: 5 star, #15
Rivals: 5 star, #20
ESPN: 95/100, #26
The other Payne on Michigan’s recruiting radar, Adreian is a 5 star prospect who has a Michigan offer but appears to be headed elsewhere. He occasionally mentions Michigan in recruiting articles but schools like Dayton, Ohio State, West Virginia, and others appear to be in control of this recruitment.
