Game 1: Northern Michigan at Michigan Post Game

While the game was never close, there were plenty of notable storylines. The most obvious was Manny Harris’ triple double.  Harris notched 18 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists in only 29 minutes. The triple double was only the second in Michigan history (although it’s important to remember that assists were not counted until 1974), the other belonging to Gary Grant in an NCAA tournament game.

Eye popping statistical performances have been common place throughout the first week of the season. Evan Turner notched a triple double and Rotnei Clarke’s hit 13 three pointers for 51 points. Still, a triple double is very hard to achieve and is an honor no matter the competition. I guess the next question is who records more triple doubles this year, Manny Harris or Evan Turner?vogrich

The second notable performance of the night was freshman Matt Vogrich putting on a shooting clinic; the lanky guard hit all five of his three point attempts en route to 15 points. There are still plenty of questions about Vogrich’s defense but he can definitely stroke it.

The quote of the night comes from Northern Michigan coach Dean Ellis:

“Their pace was more extreme than we could handle,” Ellis said. “We played Michigan State about four years ago, and even they didn’t attack us with that kind of speed. If they keep playing like that, and keep getting the ball into Manny’s hands, they are going to be very good.”

Taking too much from a game against a mediocre GLIAC team is obviously a mistake but Michigan dominated Northern in every facet of the game.

Michigan rolled offensively, scoring 1.4 points per possession in a 69 possession game. Michigan shot it well (65% eFG), got to the free throw line (36% FTR), and rebounded the ball (43% offensive rebounding, 75% defensive rebounding). It’s tough to play much better on offense.

If you are really looking for a negative from Michigan’s offensive performance, you could point to the fact that Michigan was only 4-20 from long range without Vogrich’s 5-5. It would be nice to see a little better shooting from the rest of the team but that’s why you have depth.

The defense was just as good. Northern scored .72 points per possession while shooting a miserable 35% eFG% from the field. The Wildcats barely sniffed the free throw line and didn’t get anything going on the glass. The one thing Michigan didn’t do was force turnovers.

Next up: Houston Baptist made one of fifteen three pointers in a home loss to Sacramento State. The Huskies travel to Crisler Arena next Friday. However, the Thanksgiving clash against Creighton looms large, the Blue Jays looked solid in a close loss at #22 Dayton.

Michigan's Zack Novak, right, dives to try and steel the ball from Northern Michigan University's Raymont McElroy during first half action of Saturday night, November 14th's season opener for the Wolverines at UM's Crisler Arena. Lon Horwedel | AnnArbor.comPhoto courtesy of Ann Arbor.com

Player Bullets:

  • Manny Harris: He’s pretty good. Manny recorded a triple double but at one point I was thinking that he wasn’t even playing his best game. That’s obviously a little harsh but the fact that Manny could record a triple double without playing his best game says everything about how good he is and can become.
  • DeShawn Sims: Sims got his touches inside and out and managed a double double for himself with 22 points on 13 shots to go along with 10 rebounds. Sims was extremely efficient and assertive, if he can bring this effort consistently he is poised for a huge season.
  • Matt Vogrich: As noted above, the kid can stroke it. His shot is extremely pure and most of his shots didn’t even hit rim. The question is how he will react against more athletic teams.
  • Darius Morris: Morris got a little more involved in the offense this time out, scoring 11 points (5-7 shooting) with 5 assists to 3 turnovers. Morris has a little too much flare in his game at times but, as advertised, he provides a new element to the Michigan offense.
  • Zack Gibson: Maybe it’s due to a boost of confidence from his strong play down the stretch last year but Zack Gibson looks good. Gibson made all five of his field goal attempts for 11 points and was active. He’s not going to be a rebounder but I think he’s giving Michigan productive minutes.
  • Zack Novak: Zack didn’t really look for his game offensively but he posted a typical Novak performance: 4 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal. Novak was diving for loose balls an crashing the glass. The most impressive thing to me is how much more athletic Novak looks on the court.
  • Stu Douglass: A relatively quiet night for Douglass who hit one three point shot in his 17 minutes. Stu appears to be searching for his role a bit. Beilein also continues to emphasize that he really likes Stu coming off the bench.
  • Laval Lucas-Perry: Laval hit his first three point shot but didn’t do much else from the field. Despite the lack of scoring I thought Laval was impressive finding the open guy and also pushing the ball in transition.
  • Anthony Wright: Definitely not his best night. Anthony couldn’t find his three point range but did manage to get to the line a couple times. The issue with Ant is that when his three point shot isn’t falling, he doesn’t provide much else.
  • Ben Cronin: Simply put, he’s not ready to be a meaningful contributor at this point. He will definitely continue to develop down the road but the fact that he didn’t get into the game until the final four minutes of a game like this says enough in my opinion.
  • Blake McLimans: DNP, a redshirt seems obvious here.
  • Sombrero

    So a couple things.

Manny is “pretty good”? No, Manny is excellent. I understand that this was Northern Michigan, but the kid can flat out ball. And he’s going to be much improved over last season.

In regards to your point being that this was Northern so don’t read too much into it. Don’t only have that caveat to the positive things. The negative stuff needs to be taken with just as small a grain of salt as the positive.

I don’t think its a bad thing that Novak wasn’t an offensive force, he didn’t need to be assertive in this game. The key is that he take the reigns when Peedi and Manny struggle, and I think he’ll do just fine in that role. And wow holy cow that put back he had tonight was 10 times as athletic as anything he did last year.

In the post game interview, Fresh sounds like Tyson, but isn’t he just one of your favorite Michigan Men of all time? Dude is just a rock for this program. All-Big Ten and All Academic-Big Ten. Friendly and humble. Oh, and did I mention he can ball? I don’t hate him being the face of the program, it is just gonna be a real downer if he leaves after this year.

  • Mitchigan

Great comments and points as always Dylan and so quick to the trigger on getting your info up. One thing on Cronin was that he hurt his hand in practice and couldn’t shoot the ball, and because of this Beilein said didnt want to give him spot minutes throughout which he’ll probably do some during the season. Great victory – it was nice to see everyones game. I thought Novak was terrific although his stats were not overwhelming. I thought Manny wasn’t even at his best as well and still what a game! Simms was very solid. Morris brings a whole new dimension on offense, is a solid defender and gave great effort.

  • Dylan

The “pretty good” thing was meant to be tounge in cheek. He is obviously a tremendous player and probably one of the best in the country.

  • Tweeter

A couple of other thoughts while the game is still fresh in my mind and before I pass out early from the afternoon drink fest that Michigan football has become.

Speaking to Novak’s improved athleticism. There were several plays throughout the game that I dont think he could have made last year, but the one that stands out the most was his tip in. He came crashing in from the wing and tipped in a miss right at the rim with his left hand. Kid is just an absolutely gamer.

I agree completely with your assessment of Douglass looking for his role. Right now I am not sure what it is or what it will be. I like LLP in the starting five because he meshes well with Morris in terms of pushing the ball and creating shots off the dribble. So I think that starting five is gonna stick. When Douglass came in the game he played some two and some one, but you never really noticed him out there. I think at some point (assuming he remains the sixth man), he needs to think shot first all the time. I would be fine with him being a guy who came in and just jacked it up from anywhere off the bench.

As the Northern coach said, Michigan really established a tempo in this game with their starting unit, but it was also nice to see them take their time on certain possessions. The ball movement was terrific and Michigan did a great job of probing the zone inside-out. The thing we have to wait and see on, is whether or not this team can continue to establish that kind of tempo against teams that have an ounce of patience in the half court offensively. Northern pretty much just took the first open shot they could get most of the night.

  • Jon

What a great start to the season. Manny, Simms, and Novak all looked great. Morris and Vogrich looked as advertised. I do disagree with your view of Wright’s game tonight. He seemed to be a vocal leader out there. And that’s something we all were hoping for out of someone this year after the loss of Meritt and Lee. I’m starting out this year as a big Wright (and Gibson) fan.

  • http://www.umhoops.com Dylan

Forgot to touch on the zone. I saw a bit of the Creighton game today and it looked like they ran a decent amount of zone so this is probably a bit of prep.

  • http://lifeondumars.com/ Ryan

Eso Akunne looked like he could be a rotational type player down the road in a few years. Jimmy King couldn’t stop saying enough positive things about him.

  • Erik

I have to agree with most of the comments so far. I liked the starting five. I felt like they all made good decisions about when to push and when to lay off. Similarly, Vogrich made good decisions on when to shoot and when to pass. When you are in the progress of going 5/5 it’s very easy to start doing “heat checks”…but Vogrich never did that…he played within the system (sorry for the cliche) and he passed when he didn’t have a wide open look. Very mature in my opinion, regardless of the competition. He easily could have jacked up 10 shots tonight if he wanted…he maximized his time on the floor.

    Other thoughts:
-Morris at the top of the 1-3-1 is what was missing last year. Should lead to a lot of fast breaks. I liked DMo..flashy is good..people don’t rail on Novak for stuff like his behind the head pass tonight…I thought DMo played well. I like how good he finishes around the rim. You just feel that if he gets it near the basket, it’s going in.

-DeShawn: I would have liked to see more post moves out of the big guy. Seems like most of his points were outside or scrapping it inside. I don’t remember any post moves or that sweet hook.

-Gibson surprised me. He was extremely effective, like Vogrich he maximized his minutes. That’s what we need.

-Novak & Douglas: I feel like they are a three headed monster with Vogrich. Whichever one is feeling it, will launch away. Tonight was Vogrich’s night. Other nights it may be theirs. I felt like their stats really could almost be lumped together.

-LLP did what was needed. Nothing really stood out, but he didn’t make as many mistakes as I’d seen in the past. Hopefully he doesn’t hit that wall in January again.

-Wright: Sorry I’ve just never been too big on this guy. I just don’t think he has “it”. I appreciate his hard work, and the fact that he’ll have 1-2 big games…but I’m not expecting him to contribute much.

-Cronin…yeah…good thing I tempered my expectations. He couldn’t hold onto the ball and looked downright clumsy at times. I hope it was just the hand injury.

-Eso: looked servicable, but with LLP and Douglas I doubt he’d see much time. Still, he looked good.

Overall, good game. Seemed like they started out jittery. Had some defensive break downs. Early free throws were not the best. The crowd was disappointing to me (too many empty seats, regardless of the opponent…you don’t see empty seats like that at Breslin. I’m disappointed more fans didn’t come out). I never really felt like UofM got in a flow…the game just seemed choppy.

Great way to start the season though.

  • Nick

Great game! That being said, is anyone else concerned with our continued lack of size heading into the Big Ten? Morris gives a great boost at the point, but I was hoping that one of Morgan, McClimans, or Cronin would help up front this year. It’s not looking like that will happen after watching tonight’s game…

  • http://www.umhoops.com Dylan

Nick: When Michigan is extremely overmatched in the size column, they have the option of Cronin. However for most games, I think they will continue to go small and I’m fine with that.

  • Kenny

    Not ready to judge Cronin,
    1. his hand hurts
    2. he was playing with mostly bench player
    3. game was already put away when he was in

  • http://www.umhoops.com Dylan

OK, Creighton was playing zone because they were shorthanded. Sounds like they might be for a while though.

  • ZRL

Considering that we play small ball and even our center can run the court well, now that we have a pg who can run the fast break I think we’re gonna end up being one of the best fast-break teams in the country. Would have loved to see the team today play against OSU last year and watch Lauderdale and Mullens run up and down the court.

  • Tweeter

Erik two big reasons we didnt see a lot of post moves out of Sims. 1. it was a high tempo game with limited true half court possessions. Mich got a lot of shots in transition. 2. Northern played a ton of zone. Its hard to get one-on-one opportunities in the post against a zone. You just dont have the spacing and time to execute them.

That said he did make one great move in the first half out of the post, but he missed the shot. He had another one where he attempted the little half-hook but he was off-balance and missed as well.

In a more half court game, we will see much more of Sims in the post. Probably Manny as well depending on the matchup.

As for the size thing. Small ball is what this team is best at and what they should employ most of the time. The hope is that the mismatches that we create with our “small” lineup on offense will outweigh the size deficiencies on the defensive end. As long as they can defensive rebound and make it difficult for teams to find post mismatches, they will be just fine. It worked pretty well last year and if they can continue to play with the tenacity they played with tonight, they will be just fine in the Big Ten.

  • Nick

I’m optimistic that we can win a bunch of games at the foul line. Is there any reason to doubt this?

  • erock

Morris brings so much to the table. We had a lot of pep out there when he was in, a lot of fastbreak looks that we weren’t getting last year. i think hes gonna take us to the next level

  • JB

    agree with the majority,
reasons i’m so encouraged by tonight’s game (i’ll try not to ramble)
    1. attitude – vs. nmu we played nearly as hard as any game last year.
    2. Morris’s athleticism, size, defense, ballhandling, and speed/ability to push the ball up the court to create a transition game all add so much to our offense. This puts less pressure on Manny(which tweeter already pointed out) and LLP will be more effective with less defensive pressure.
    3. Just about every player showed significant improvement, skill wise and physically.
    4. having vogrich in the mix makes us a way better shooting team. Defenses CANNOT leave him open, and he’s only the third or fourth option when he’s out there. He makes Novak/Douglass our second best shooters on the court. tough to cover, especially with manny and darius creating and simms down low.
    5. i’m not counting out cronin. Awkward for sure, but if he gets it together then he could be a force by the end of his career.
    6. we’re gonna have a great season, and it’s gonna be frightening what Beilein does as top talent recruits start flocking to UM.
    7. jimmy king

that being said, our biggest weakness is our lack of size and northern was a team where this was not even an issue, we were actually bigger than them. however, i couldn’t have hoped for us to look any better than we did. should be a great season.

  • Erik

Nick, I don’t think we can rely on winning games at the line in conference season. Home teams always get the calls in the Big Ten. To win on the road in conference you have to not turn the ball over, and nail your shots.

  • Paul F.

Game was fun to watch. As for the crowd yeah, I was a little shocked the season ticket holders that
Sit next to, didn’t show up. Oh well, More elbow room for me. Nice to see the students make a good showing. Vogrich was hot tonight. Nice dunks by Gibson and Sims. Manny being Manny.
Funny the students wanted the Team to score 100. I kind of wanted to see it too.

  • Tom, Too.

I was pretty disappointed in Cronin’s hip. I was thinking the hip thing was pretty much healed up, but he appeared to be limping noticeably. I hope he keeps his head up, but it has got to be tough, & frustrating, hauling around all that body on a bum hip. I think he is a ways away from contributing. Tough because I grew up in Upstate NY and love the guy’s heart.

  • eddie

While it was encouraging to run a D2 team out of the building, let’s keep things in perspective. Morris and the team will not be able to push the ball at the same rate against better opponents, and forget about running an up-tempo style in the Big 10. Has anyone ever done that?

That said, great start to the season. At the very least this victory provided a nice confidence boost for the freshman and let them play next to and see first hand how the real pros (Manny and Peedi) take care of business in a matter of fact, punishing sort of way.

  • http://umhoops.com Wayman Britt

Great start, but don’t want to read too much into this game against D2 school, however,

    - Manny looked great rebounding
    - Gibson took the ball to the hoop with authority
    - liked Morris on D, in fact whole team looked good on D

    Concerns
    - even though LLP pushed the ball can he maintain thru season
    - The college game seems to fast for Cronin. Looks like his hip will effect his stride, maybe for his whole career.

  • JB

    Eddie -
I know it’s gonna be a lot harder to push the ball against D1 teams, especially decent ones. I’m not trying to say we’ll be a fast break team, just that Morris makes pushing the ball an option that last year’s guards didn’t. when we get a quick rebound, he’ll be able to push it sometimes (with shooters all around and manny running the wing, this will improve our offensive production). I agree though, let’s keep the win in perspective.

  • maxwell’s demon

I think Stu coming off the bench is less him getting beat out for the starting spot with LLP and more that Beilein wants Stu to run the show when Morris is out.

    Also pretty encouraged by Gibby.

  • trueblueintexas

Nice to see the team perform the way the should against this type of opponent. Remember Savanah St. last year? Shows the real progress this team has made in just three years.
Regarding the ability to play big, there was a stretch of the game when Beilein ran with Sims and Gibson. This is what Beilien has to work with as Cronin’s hip is no where near ready (it may never be based on how I saw him moving in limited action). Hopefully Morgan can heal quickly and help during the second half of the Big Ten season as it would be great to have a three man rotation in the post. Obviously guard play will not be a problem.

  • maxwell’s demon

oh and with turner running the point you gotta think he’s more likely to rack up triple doubles with assists probably being the most common limiting factor

  • Steve

I was hoping Wright could build off of his great game against OU in the tournament last year…..obviously things remain to be seen but looks more like a flash in the pan performance than anything.

  • Tom, Too.

Sometimes Wright shoots it up there because he thinks it is his turn to shoot and if he doesn’t chuck it up there, he will lose his chance. That corner shot in the first half had no chance to go in. He is much better, as is everybody, when he lets it all come to him. He needs to realize sometimes the shot won’t be there and maybe he’ll play five minutes without shooting….

  • AG2

Looks like Baylor is in trouble. Losing at home to Hartford.

  • Josh

Ekpe Udoh had the game winner for Baylor in that game at the buzzer.

  • JimC

Wow Vogrich shows Stu, Zach, LLP, etc what a real sniper does. Probably he’ll hit 2 or 3 every game then someone will be glued to his jersey.

  • Tyler

Impressive performance by Vogrich and Darius started shooting the ball which was good to see. Starting lineup looked solid and we have so much depth it’s great!

How’s everybody liking our odds for the Old Spice Classic after seeing Creighton, Baylor, etc? I didn’t get to catch the game(s).

  • JimC

Guess they could win the Old Spice. You can tell the team is a notch better than last year, but how much better is hard to tell against a crappy GLIAC team (no offense to crappy GLIAC teams).

  • JB

    coble out for season

  • http://www.umhoops.com Dylan

Wow, that’s terrible news for Northwestern. Gotta feel bad for them, this could have been the year.

  • JB

    http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/ncb/news/story?id=4658281

yeah, terrible news for them. jeff ryan is out for the season too. looking at the big ten/acc challenge, i’m no longer confident the big ten will win it. we still have a good chance, but it’s not going to be easy.

  • Bball

I have a hunch that Stu coming off the bench is a test of sorts (remember Peedi coming off the bench at the beginning of last year?). Plus Stu plays really well with Gibson and gives us a really different look/skill set of offense than LLP. He can bring some extra snipe-age off the bench, followed by even more bomb dropping from Vogrich. Like having our own Microwave. We haven’t had this much scoring ability on the floor and bench since the fab-five days I don’t think. Bullock/Taylor/Traylor could fill it up, but I don’t think those teams had this much depth. The pace on offense and the ball movement by everyone that was in there was awesome. I’m pumped! Can’t wait for Old Spice!

We are the best team in the Old Spice Classic, so my expectations are very high. In fact, I would be very disappointed if we didn’t win the tournament. Maybe it’s because I’m heading to Orlando, but I’m extremely worried about the possibility of an upset against Creighton. That would be a major bummer to begin the vacation. If we can play with the kind of confidence and tempo that I saw in this first game, then we should be ok. It’s going to be hard for any team to match up with us in this tourney. I love DMo by the way. He’s going to be a 4 year stud at the top of the 1-3-1. I like the flailing arm movements when he plays D.

  • Giddings

Iowa loses at home by 12 to Texas-San Antonio… ouch, they could definitely be on the level of last year’s Indiana team.

  • Tweeter

well all of a sudden our schedule gets a little easier. Iowa, NW, Indy and PSU all twice. Iowa proved just how terrible they are and NW is going to have problems scoring without Coble. I am thinking that an 11 win minimum in the Big Ten should be expected now.

  • Bardo

A few thoughts from the weekend in sports:
    1. Creighton looked pretty solid against the Flyers. Watched the game with a UD alumn and he was definitely nervous. Should be a shootout on Thanksgiving.
    2. Bill Belichick and Charlie Weiss are a lot alike.
    3. I will forever hate Jim Tressel. Go Blue!

  • Sam

I maintain that we would be a much better team had Ekpe Udoh stayed. He is definitely one of Baylor’s two best players. Today he posted 21 points, including 1-1 from downtown and 4-6 from the free throw line to go along with 7 boards and 5 blocks. To have two big guys again.

  • http://www.umhoops.com Dylan

Ekp is a good player but everything probably worked out best for everyone. Does last year’s team beat Oklahoma with Ekpe?

Ekpe should have a good year this year and it seems like he’s got off to a great start. Michigan will be damn good too. Best of luck to him though.

Oh yeah… Thanks for nothing Bill Belichick lost me my fantasy game with that stupid call. Blah.

  • KJay

Really excited about this team and how much they look to be playing for each other. Gotta like the chances that one of Vogrich, Douglass, LLP or Novak will be hot during any given game. With Darius, Manny and LLP being able to penetrate and open up things for these guys while DeShawn draws attention down low, this is going to be a fun year. Hopefully no more long scoring droughts that plagued us even last year at times.

Watching the footage of both Wayne State and the Northern games, it is clear that Morris is a huge upgrade from Lee/Merritt/Grady because of his contribution on both ends. He looks confident bringing the ball up against quick guards (Wayne State) and doesn’t seem to force things. He seems to really relish being a floor general instead of simply looking to set things up and get the ball out of his hands like Lee and especially Merritt used to do last year (Grady was better at this). Morris’s defensive length is also invaluable, especially at the top of the 1-3-1.

LLP looks really quick this year. Reminds more of how he looked in the Arizona open gym video. If he can regain that tenacity he will add a lot to the team, it seems like he went from getting a lot of hype to becoming more of an afterthought. But he’s in the starting lineup and it makes a lot of sense with him alongside Darius. This team is a lot more athletic than last year’s.

In addition to Manny’s improved shooting, he’s also seemed to learn how to control his body when he gets into the lane and pass the ball without taking a charge. He no longer goes straight to the rack with reckless abandon. If he can continue to show this type of maturity he will be even better than advertised.

And Zack Gibson has been a pleasant surprise as well.

  • JimC

Overconfident and not worried about anybody until BC, and even that looks OK.
But #$@$ I wish the B10 would win the ACC challenge ONCE!

  • Greenspan3000

Is it me or does it seem like for how good of a three point threat LLP can be, he is not that good of a free throw shooter. Also, since Morris and LLP can both drive the lane, I think that Morris should start with Douglass, and LLP should pair with Vogrich. Maybe I am just reading too much into the lineups.

Maybe a push for MSU because it is at Chapel Hill, but I am not sold on NC this year, they are really young.

UNC looks VERY shaky at both guard spots. You mean to tell me Marcus Ginyard and Larry Drew II are the best they can come up with? Turnovers are going to be a serious issue for them this year, MSU might even be able to flip the script from last year!

  • mitch

Loved the way Darius played. He is going to be the key to our success this year. As much i liked our PG’s last season, they were not even close to what Darius can bring to the table. It’s fun to watch all of those shooters as well.

  • MGoDoubleMs

Cronin’s hand was injured to the point where it couldn’t bend. He had no ability to dribble or shoot with it, he was kind of just in there to be big and to pace. I don’t even know what the point of putting him in was, but coach probably just wanted to get him some reps running up and down the floor, maybe to prove he’s got a heartbeat? Give him a week or two to heal up and he’ll be good to go.

  • JimC

Thank you Jason. I hope you’re right.
It will make my stomach turn to pull for MSU over UNC.

  • Sam

I don’t care how much everyone wants to win the Big 10/ACC Challenge, I don’t think any Michigan fan should root for Michigan State or Ohio State. I know it would show that the Big 10 is “good”, but we should really all know that the Big Ten is going to be a great conference this year, easily top two. I’m sure that there won’t be any MSU or OSU fans cheering for us either. I’m just not big into this “conference supremacy” idea.

Creighton will take down Michigan by eight or more. They almost handled Dayton with 4 major players ill or injured. Should be full steam ahead in Orlando.
