- THOUGHTS FROM MICHIGAN; HEADING TO NYC FOR BIG EAST MEDIA DAY
Jeff Goodman got a chance to stop by Michigan’s practice and posted some thoughts. He loves Michigan’s shooters and thinks Darius Morris is the key going forward. - GUEST BLOGGER: THE CHANEY REPORT
More from Goodman’s blog, this time from guest blogger Chris Chaney. The theme in Michigan’s locker room: “Play hard. Play smart. Play together.” - Izzo plans to play more zone this year but Ohio State plans to run “all man-to-man“. What is the world coming to?

That seems to make 2 for 2 on visiting journalists who think the development of Darius Morris is the key for a great season. Since we had a great season without DMo last year and lost only 2 senior walk-ons, I don’t think I’m alone in my excitement for this season.
I really don’t think he is the Key to a great season, although I haven’t sat through a practice, either. LLP and Stu can run the point and have experience in the system. I think D-Mo can sit back and give 15-20 minutes a game and we will still be sweet. I hope he blows up, though…..
That Jeff Goodman article was next to useless. Not a single bit of incite. Just a whole bunch of stock information that everyone in the nation already knows.
agree with sven, the key of the season would be Cronin, McLimans and Gibson, aka, the interior defense.
Plenty of incite. Not enough insight.
I think its good national pub so no complaints.
I think the key will be depth. We have 10 to 11 guys who can contribute. Strength in numbers should be the battle cry.
A healthy Cronin can help since he has what can’t be taught. If he can also shoot outside and pass it could keep the back door open for guys like Novak and free up Sims inside where he can use his quickness. He looks like he has these skills and the special skill of being real freaken tall.
It will also help if Manny decides to be a star. He has the potential to be a great all around player he just need a little more swagger.
IMO, the keys to this team are 1) improving 3pt shooting percentage (and thus eFG %) and 2) a big man stepping up alongside Sims (Gibson, Cronin, McLimans or Morgan). The development of Morris could help 1) if he’s able to penetrate and get our shooters open looks. He could also help out of the 1-3-1, with his additional athleticism and length. An additional big man would also help on the defensive end out of the 1-3-1. McLimans looks like he could be really effective there.
i agree with KJay. I think it is more important for Morris to pick up on Beilein’s DEFENSIVE schemes first. With his length he could be huge at the top of the 131, and if he is quick enough, he could be huge in stopping other point guards in man defense. this team has enough offense from the other spots on the floor (it’s not like we got a ton of offense from Lee and Merritt last year), but if we can get solid D from the point position, we’ll pick up right where we left off.
lets not forget that morris is a highly touted and was highly sought after he isnt a walk on………….he is goign to score and hes going to do way more than just defend and running a team
