2009 Old Spice Classic Bracket

Dylan Burkhardt

The 2009 Old Spice Classic bracket has been released. Michigan will play Creighton in the first round and then the winner/loser of Xavier/Marquette.

It looks like Michigan is the #1 or #2 seed in the tournament to me and I would expect them to be one of the favorites to win the whole thing. It will not be a cakewalk but I think the odds will be on Michigan or Florida State.  A 2nd round battle against Xavier or Marquette looks difficult, however Xavier will be breaking in a first year coach and Marquette lost some very good players.

For a team that relished in the underdog role last year, it will be interesting to see how they react to the favorite role early in the season.  The pre-season hype continues to build, Dick Vitale put Michigan at #11 in his pre-season top 40.

In terms of the first round match-up, Creighton fell on the wrong side of the bubble but won 27 games last year before being knocked out of the NIT by Kentucky. The Jays lose Booker Woodfox, last year’s returning scorer and reigning MVC player of the year, to graduation. They also lose Josh Dotzler (21 mpg) and Dustin Sitzmann (2 mpg).

The leading returnees for the Jays include P’Allen Stinnet, Justin Carter, and Kenny Lawson Jr however there are a number of guys who played 10-25 minutes last year that will be back. Former Michigan point guard target 4-star Andrew Bock headlines the Jays’ incoming class.

This is just a quick rundown from looking at the Creighton roster and I’m sure it’s too early to judge. The Jays have proven that they are a quality mid-major program and they definitely shouldn’t be underestimated in round 1.

I wouldn’t under estimate the Jays in this match up. It should be a fun match up to watch, as the Jays rarely get a match up with a BCS opponent during the regular season, and no, I don’t count Nebraska.

  • Not trying to underestimate the Jays. Iona clearly would have been the best first round draw. I still think Michigan has the chance to make some noise in this tournament.

Man, could you imagine Deshawn Sims and Ekpe Udoh facing off in the championship game!?

I wish we would have gotten iona, but I think we will be able to pull it through…

some TZ video…. Dont know if thats already been on here, been away a while… but its pretty sweet

Should be fun. Beilein and crew will be tested from the get go. Creighton is a quality foe, no cream puff!

  • This will be an exciting re-match between Altman and Beilein from the NCAA tourney a couple of years ago that was a first round classic. I am glad we have you guys in our first round game because if we win, it’s a good win, and if we lose, it’s a good loss(even though Digger Phelps will probably find a way to see it as a bad loss for Creighton). We will probably be in the 30-40 preseason collegehoopsnet ranking range to give you an idea of how good we will be this upcoming year. There should be a good one to two thousand bluejay faithful at the tournament.

I am so hyped up for the upcoming season and I’m actually glad that we have a good first round game in Creighton who year in year out is a quality team. The more quality opponents we play the better.

    Forever Go Blue!

Definitely looks like a promising tournament no matter the outcome. I’d love to see us win of course and if we can get past Marquette it might be looking good.

While I don’t claim to have in-depth knowledge of the 2009-10 outlooks for all 8 teams, it certainly appears as though the top half of the bracket is the more challenging. Come selection Sunday, the games played in this tournament could turn out to make or break Michigan’s selection.

I’ll agree with D Nows here, the upper half of the bracket sure does look tougher when compared to the bottom half, but it should be a difficult and challenging classic
