State of the Blog Address

Now that my first full season of blogging is history I wanted to take a step back and look at the last year and a half. Behold, the state of the blog address (I’m not very creative when it comes to headlines).

15 months ago I grew to be frustrated at the lack of a quality Michigan basketball blog. I was a big fan of the Big Ten Wonk but Gasaway had gone on to greener pastures beyond just the Big Ten. I had also become an avid reader of the Detroit Tigers Weblog and could barely make it through a Tigers game without constantly refreshing the comments page. Somehow I wanted to attempt to bring the quality analysis of the Big Ten Wonk and mix it with the community of the Detroit Tigers Weblog.

I have been making webpages for ages so the first step was easy. I jumped in head first and started blogging. The writing still has a ways to go but I feel like my biggest success has been in creating a community. I have been simply dumbfounded at how many people read and comment on my posts. Since I started the blog there have been 1,123,114 page views and 9,865 comments on 559 published posts. I make a point to try to read every comment that comes through (they get forwarded to my e-mail) and I enjoy every one of them.

My main reason for writing this post is to thank each and every one of you that have ever posted a comment, sent an encouraging e-mail, donated money, or visited the site at all over the last fifteen months.

My second reason was to talk about what comes next and make sure this isn’t your last visit between now and November. The site actually grew over the course of last summer so I’m confident you all will stick around.

For the next week or so I’m going to take a bit of a break — there will probably be mostly links posts while I recover from the grueling stretch of blogging over the last couple weeks. Starting next week I’ll be doing a “report card” review of the entire roster, something that I started last year but never finished. It’s safe to say I have a little bit more positive momentum to carry me through that process this year.

I’ll also be focusing on recruiting all summer. First I’ll recap how Michigan targets finished their high school seasons and where their recruitments seem to be right now. After that it is on to AAU season when recruiting really picks up and we can only hope that this summer is as entertaining as the last.

I started a notes page for next year’s schedule, this was a popular page last year and basically it is just a running list of any scheduling information that has leaked out. So far it is a bit bare but you have to start somewhere I suppose. I’ll also be here to cover any other breaking news surrounding the basketball team and I’m sure we can find a couple other topics to debate this summer.

I also moved the site to a new server, there shouldn’t be any problems but DNS updates can be a bit finicky. The new server is faster and should also be more reliable which should help alleviate some of the issues over the last couple months.

Thanks for sticking with me for the first fifteen months, hopefully the next year is even better.

Good stuff. Keep up the good work.

Dylan, just wanted to drop you a note of appreciation for what you are doing. I moved to DC after graduation in ’02 and suffered through the basketball program with everyone else. When in school I spent my time playing with the walk-ons and players at the CCRB and the IM building. Had a memorable Saturday morning run with Mike Gotfredson and almost won a league championship with Rotolu Adebiyi when we both moved to DC.

The biggest thing I missed in DC was any kind of coverage concerning the basketball team. I understand that it hasn’t been the brightest spot in the Michigan Athletic program and probably didn’t merit the limelight, but for a hoops fan it was tough to try to rely on ESPN local and a few friends still in AA to provide a glimpse of what was going on.

So thanks. I stop by to visit frequently and I don’t comment as much as I should, keep up the good work. I look forward to the recruiting updates this spring/summer.

  • Mike

Thanks again, Dylan. With the collapse of the Ann Arbor News, we’re left with you, Mgoblog and the Michigan Daily to provide good coverage of Michigan basketball. Keep up the good work.

I have one minor suggestion. When you’re covering recruiting, could you clarify more which targets are likely to come to Michigan? I like the updates on potential targets, but it would be nice to have more context on their chances of accepting a Michigan offer.

  • http://Detroitsportsrag.com GBMDC02

Dylan, awesome site. At the M Bar in DC on saturday, I spoke to a bunch of people who you could tell were die-hard Michigan Basketball fans (like me). They all were regular readers of your site. You’ve really made a mark. Keep up the good work!

  • adamsez411

    Dylan,

You created a great blog, nah a great place for fans of Michigan Basketball to come to daily. I thanked you earlier in the year and sang your praises but just a quick “Thanks Again” for all your hardwork and keeping us in the locker room and on the court with the team.

    Thanks Bro.

  • SWolv

Great site! We read you here in New York City. Keep up the good work!

  • Erik

Good job again Dylan. I have your site on RSS feed and I always check the latest news.

My offer to help with the data analysis still stands. If you need any numbers crunched, let me know. Maybe it would free up your time to blog more.

  • sal

Dylan, I love the site. As a die-hard U-M fan living in Madison, it is nearly impossible to get anything but Badger news here. The time you put in and the quality of work is amazing. I have passed the site on to many other U-M fans and they love it. Keep up the good work!

  • YpsiTuckyBoy

    Mike,

Please tell me you did not just say the words “good coverage” and “Michigan Daily” in the same sentence. That is an insult to Dylan’s work.

  • South Florida Maize Rage

Keep up the great work and I will keep up the great bracket in your pool!

  • Adam

Thanks Dylan! I have always been disappointed with the lack of quality basketball coverage around here. I’ve been a diehard basketball fan through the good years and bad (mostly bad as of late) and it’s so good to have a place to get my Michigan basketball fix. UMHoops has been a phenomenal way to keep me up to date with the happenings around the program. Thanks so much for all you do!

  • blueblood

Props to all that you do! Made following a great season that much easier and enjoyable.

    GO BLUE!

I would like to make a complaint. This blog has ruined my life. My productivity at work is down 30% and my boss is starting to notice. My girlfriend thinks I blog too much and associates “blogging” with “nerdiness”. She just doesn’t understand. I often find myself daydreaming and obsessing about whether I’ve missed any links or overlooked any comments. I have night sweats when I think about less coverage over the offseason. Why did you have to make such an awesome blog? Whyyyyyyyy????

  • Giddings

Proud to say I was here from Day One after getting the link from a little “promo post” from Dylan on Scout/Rivals. I remember being impressed by the coverage of the Legion and LLP transfers and the defections of K’Len/Kendric/Jerret. Within the first week, UMHoops was at the top of my favorites list and the first site I visited every day.

The visits and comments numbers are impressive, I’m glad to see that there are so many others out there who are as passionate about Michigan Basketball as I am.

Can’t believe I haven’t donated up to this point but that’s the first thing I’m doing when I get home today.

  • Alyzen

Another DC reader here – just wanted to say great job with the blog, Dylan, and thanks for all your work on it – I really appreciate what you’re doing. I haven’t commented much, but I’ve checked the site every day throughout the season, and will continue to visit in the off season. It’s been a great way to keep up on the team and I love the community that’s developed in the comments. Keep it up, everybody.

  • Andy

Agree with all of the above, this has been a great resource for me this season. I’m just sorry I came across this kind of halfway through the season. I’m 30 years old, which means I was 12 in 1991 when the Fab Five showed up on campus. I’m sure everyone remembers that age, and impressions that are made then are pretty much set in stone for life. I know some people complain about them and what they did for the long term status of the program, but I wouldn’t trade in those two years for anything.

Anyway, a huge upside for me is the lack of garbage and stupid comments in the comments section. I used to try to follow the discussion on mlive, but it’s just the same UM vs. MSU garbage over and over and over again. Fortunately someone there pointed me in this direction.

One suggestion would be a links section to some historic clips or anything people can find out there. Every once in a while when I’m bored I’ll hit youtube and look up Michigan Basketball highlights and it’s fun to watch random stuff (for example, a highlight package of Jalen Rose from a random Indiana game). I think something like that would help pass the summer.

All in all, great work, looking forward to what’s to come.

  • JRose5

Dylan, great work the entire year. UMHoops is a daily read! I often check back throughout the day, as I am afraid that you may have posted another great link or piece. It is also a joy to discuss UM hoops with such a great “community” of knowledgable fans. I will continue to check in year round and look forward to another great year of UM basketball. Great work Dylan!
    Go Blue!

  • Brian

Longtime (well, this season anyway) reader, first time commenter…but wanted to say great work on your site! Glad to find a place with such good coverage and discussion right as we have such an exciting season. Thanks for all your hard work!

Go Blue and here’s to another exciting season. (I’ll be coming back, for sure.)

  • EchoWhiskey

Wow, it always amazes me how many Michigan folks make it down to D.C. Count me in as one of the people at Buffalo Billiards screaming at Griffin all night.

Keep up the good work, Dylan.

  • Rob

    Dylan,

Keep up the great work. For this D.C. resident and long-time Michigan basketball fan, it’s a joy to follow my favorite team through your writing. I look forward to this summer’s recruiting coverage, and hopefully, continued success for the program.

  • Dave

Thanks so much for your hard work. Great site, you do a great job. I think your writing is excellent and getting better. Keep it up.

  • MasterPosts

I also am a recent graduate who attended nearly every home game during my four years at UofM. I think the coverage from this blog is unmatched by any site I’ve come across. I discovered your blog late in the season via another Michigan fan. I stop in quite a bit, but rarely leave comments. I will be sure to stop in during the off season read any news I may have missed. Keep up the good work. I look forward to reading all about Michigan’s dominance during next year’s season.

  • Dave

Outstanding blog! Thanks for the great insight. I really appreciate your passion for the wolverines while keeping a realistic and unbiased viewpoint. It would be great if you could keep us posted on the career decisions of C.J., David, and Jevohn as well.

Its great, to be, a Michigan Wolverine!

  • Rice41

Great work, please keep it up. A daily read for many of us self-proclaimed members of the Michigan b-ball mafia. I can only imagine the growth this blog will see with each year of continued hoops resurgence. Go Blue buddy, keep making us proud.

  • ohmigods

    here’s an idea…
how about a umhoops community party?
we could meet at a local restarant/watering hole

    also Great Job!

  • AG2

There’s nothing like the feeling of watching a team you love lose for so long before finally learning how to win. Watching Michigan v. Clemson reminded me of how I felt during the 2006 ALDS and ALCS with the Tigers. Granted, the Michigan v. Oklahoma game reminded me of how I felt during the 2006 World Series, haha.

One day, we will feel that joy when the Lions reach the Super Bowl!

  • http://www.umhoops.com Dylan

AG2: I actually had thrown that in my something to cheer about article at first but took it out. Being at the Clemson game and being at Game 6 of the ALCS are both wayyy up there for me.

  • Drew

I check everyday, and I love the job you’re doing here. Keep it up.

Also, just curious, is there any chance that Seth Curry, who announced he’s transferring from Liberty, could be heading to Michigan? Seems like he would be a perfect fit in the Belein system.

  • Harry

Thanks for the great season. I looked all over for a decent Michigan Basketball sight and I’ve finally been able to stop looking. Keep up the great work!

  • jamie mac

    Dylan,

What can I say that has not already been mentioned above.

Great stuff….keep writing and blogging….your future is bright.

One idea for summer writing…..do an in depth break down of the Old Spice Field…..i already cant wait to see how UM does in that tourney….may even head down to Orlando to catch the action.

  • the dude

you forgot your shoutout to mgoblog, dylan.

  • Tom, Also

Dylan, if I may make a suggestion:

Since getting pretty deep into MGoBlog and personally following all M athletics (I really mean all), and being a writer at heart and a computer nerd by career choice (and unchoice as I decide to stay in school after getting my Comp Sci degree to become a teacher, but I digress…), I’ve kinda developed a taste (IMO) for the difference between good blogs and blogs that go by the way side.

I think you’ve got the hard part done: you’ve got a great fan base that loves reading your posts, me included! Congrats on that!

However, sometimes I’ll read a post and feel like “there could have been so much more.” And 99.9999% of the time this happens, is when you put up a Links Post.

Links Posts are helpful because they combine a bunch of info that may otherwise hard to wholly locate. However, you don’t really provide any analysis on any of those links.

Take a look at what Brian does at MGo: If there’s a note-worthy item in a news article or other blog, Brian links to it and then provides his spin or opinion or analysis of it. I think that is what makes MGo really popular (along w/ Brian’s writing). He finds something, disects it, and readers can chime in with their own disection/opinion.

I think if you look at your Links Posts there are very few comments because there is just so much info that, as a reader I’m like “well, I have 10 minutes to read, but there’s 8 articles here. How do I know what to read?”

This is my opinion of course, but I think a better way (and admittedly, more work on your part) to do links is to find and analyze something in an article. If you have other links that may be of interest, link to them at the bottom of the post. Save links to game previews to your Game Preview. I think that spreads out the information and at the same time allows readers a better conception of what info is vital to read and what info can be looked at if time allows.

  • Nate the Newt

This site is on my RSS. I read it everyday but never really comment. It’s fantastic, keep it up! I like some of the suggestions people made but I’ll take whatever this site offers or has offered because it’s still better than the crap that was out there. Been watching games since Rumeal hit the free-throws and Super Glen shot 47% during the whole tournament, plus Loy went to a high school right by mine.

  • UMDC

Another thank you to Dylan. You’ve done a great job with the site.

    DC UM fans rock!

  • Sam

Thanks a lot Dylan. I am currently a freshman Rager, hopefully soon to assume a position in the Rage (pres, VP, secretary, etc.). I enjoy keeping up with the site daily and I spread the word to any of my basketball-enjoying buddies, including a State fan who will hopefully be commenting soon. When you attract even opponents’ fans, you must be doing something right. Keep it up!

  • Blazerine

The site is brilliant Dylan. You’re doing a great job. You should be getting paid for this quality of stuff!

We love it and we’ll be here all summer. I’m looking forward to all the recruits coverage and stuff.

    GO BLUE

  • Tommy

I suppose now I feel I have to say something. Regardless of being that “state fan”, this is almost always an informative read. Just like spartanweblog this is really well polished and I am glad this has an intelligent fan base unlike a lot of people on mlive. Keep it up man and I plan to keep track of this site in the future.

  • alien

Class of UM ’92, seen some great historic games at UM, glad to find your blog’s coverage and the resurrection of the program. Keep it up.

  • Brandon

Keep it up man. This has become a place I stop through daily.

  • Justin C

    Dylan,

You’ve done a terrific job with this. I became a UM basketball fan long before I ever followed the football program, and it’s nice to have a site solely dedicated to the hoops program.

Here’s hoping you can start gaining greater access with athletic department, coaches, players and recruits. Do you currently have press credentials? If not, then I would really like to see you get them. It would be awesome to read an interview with Beilein (one of the few stat geeks in the college coaching profession), hear you ask questions at pressers and hear what you’re hearing from recruits.

    Good luck!

  • Kenny

I too want to echo what everyone has said and say good job and thank you. And since everyone also appears to be from DC I truly have nothing to add, aside from ditto…

  • http://umhoops.com Wayman Britt

Great site – Dylan. Fantastic information. How refreshing to have UM basketball back. It has been very frustrating under former head coaches TA and BE. You have to have good players, no doubt, but good coaching sure makes a difference.

  • TrueBlueinTexas

Thanks for all your work. I really appreciate having a dedicated home to get my UM b-ball fix year-round. I know I contributed 300+ of those page views. Thanks.

  • Gary

Great site Dylan! Classy, informative, well-written – you are doing a great job. I have been a season ticket holder for 20 years and have never enjoyed a season as much as this one. UMHoops added a lot to that. I made a small donation to the cause – I hope others will too.

  • Gary

Your mention of Big Ten Wonk reminds me of how much I miss that site. I think Basketball Prospectus is so disorganized that it isn’t worth the time. Who thought it was a great idea to randomly mix college and NBA coverage with no easy way to tell them apart?

  • http://www.umhoops.com Dylan

Yeah, I just look for Gasaway’s name mostly over there. I try to link to their stuff as much as possible though because they definitely know what they are talking about.

  • bf1118

great site man keep up the good work…looking forward to reading more in the coming months and on into next season. Go Blue!

  • http://umhoops.com Go Blue

I have been following UM basketball since Eric Turner(Flint Central) and Antoine Joubert were blue chip recruits, early 80′s for you young bucks. This site has really given us fans a sense of community almost like a “brotherhood”, and this in turn has made being a fan all the more enjoyable. For this I would like to say thanks Dylan!

  • http://n/a Scott

    Dylan,

Thanks for all the time and effort, heart and soul you put into umhoops.com. I’m a UM grad (’01) and currently living in (wait for it …) Turkey. I swear I had nothing to do with whatever problems arose with the site mid-season. I know nothing about computer programming.

But I do know some things about Michigan basketball and quality reporting/analysis. You’re doing a great job. I don’t get to watch too many of the games (they often start at like 2am), but I do get to read your recap every time and I’m loving it.

I’m new to reading blogs, actually. Just started this fall when a friend tipped me off to Brian and MGoBlog. He wasn’t really covering basketball and I was dying to read about the team. He had a link for something called “UMHoops” and it’s been scratching where I was itching. Thanks!

I’ve been a M Basketball fan since watching the 1989 team shock the world. I loved the fab five. I’ve hated Digger Phelps ever 1993, when he said that second place for two years was good enough. And I’ve been a faithful and hopeful fan through the dark years. This year has been so inspiring, so refreshing, for all the reasons you’ve mentioned.

One last thing. Thanks for being one of the few hopeful, optimistic, non-cynical M fans and commentators. I think we Wolverines often ruin our own fun with too much cynicism. Your commentary is anything but. Keep it up!

    Go BLUE!

  • http://www.bamapachyderm.com Chris in NC

Thank you Dylan for the level headed writing on the hoops. It’s easy to be a homer and write “go team go” stuff, but at the risk of sounding like an American Idol judge, you keep it real. Thank you again for all you did for us. Looking forward to the summer and next year. Get some rest, you deserve it

  • jmblue

I discovered this blog pretty early on in its existence and I’ve been hooked ever since. You’ve done a FANTASTIC job. Enjoy your little hiatus – you’ve earned it!
