Selection Sunday Morning Bracketology Updates

Dylan Burkhardt

Just over 6 hours until Selection Sunday and it looks like it is going to be a good day. Hopefully a lot of people can make it to Crisler for the viewing party. I’ll be posting updates throughout the day.

  • Dylan,

Would you dance, if I asked you to dance?

    Put on your comfortable shoes

I know everyone has us in, and I can see that we have a better resume than the teams that are truly on the bubble. But I honestly can’t get it though my head that we are going to be picked tonight. I just feel like we are destined to screw up and/or be screwed by the committee every year. I’m not sure I can comprehend being happy with Michigan basketball at the end of the season.

I can’t wait to hopefully be very relieved in a few hours.

  • Ian Cameron

We can dance if we want to; we can leave all cares behind.

Question: If Purdue goes on to win the BTT, and Duke wins the ACC, is that expected to significantly impact our RPI in advance of the seeding? I know it impacts the resume, but does it impact the statistical measurements?

Teams seeded 8-11 seem fairly evenly matched. So at this point, I’ve convinced myself that I would prefer a 10-11 rather than an 8-9 based solely upon the second round matchups. The gap between the elite teams in the top of 1 and the top half of 2 (Pitt, Memphis, Louisville, Carolina, UConn, Oklahoma) and the really good teams (Duke, State, Wake Forest, Florida State, Villanova, Missouri) seems significant to me.

Appropriate caveats apply (i.e., I’m an idiot, etc.).

    Happy Selection Sunday Wolverines

At this point, I’m guessing that it’s too late in the process for the conference title games to affect our seeding. If we were playing in the BTT title game it might have made a difference, but I don’t think having our regular-season opponents in it matters.

  • What a refreshing season under Coach Beilein. He sure has UM moving in the right direction. I hate to bring up the past, but under TA we were disappointed every year he was here. It was always wait til this recruit gets here or wait til these players become upperclassmen. He never developed players. Thanks Coach Beilein.

  • Avery Queen

Wow FSU’s Nigerian center is gigantic.

  • Avery Queen

I could really go for an 11 seed with a 2nd round match up vs. Kansas or Missouri.

  • Nice — looks like CBS will be on hand at Crisler for a “live look in.”

  • Other Matt

    Avery Queen,

We don’t want to play Kansas or Missouri. Those are bad matchups. They’re not gigantic inside, but Aldrich is a bad matchup and we lack the size to create problems for Sherron Collins driving to the hoop. I swear, he gets more shots blocked than anybody I’ve ever seen. Missouri plays that full court pressure defense that Mike Anderson had success with at UAB. We don’t want any part of that.

  • Tom Too

I live in KC, so I’d love to stick it to the locals here with a KU loss on Saturday…

  • IX

Yea, I agree. Any matchup w/ a Big 12 team doesn’t seem like a good one.

I wouldn’t mind a matchup with teams like Marquette, Butler, Tennessee (though they look like the best SEC team, in my opinion), Cal. Those are some of the likely matchups we may get in round 1.

I wanna see them put the muppets on the bug screen at Crisler….now that would be funny

  • Ken in Las Vegas

I hope we get seeded against Cal, Marquette, or Utah. Hopefully Clemson, Texas, and Tennessee will all be seeded too high. I really think we will end up a 10, and it would be more likely that they make us a 9 seed than an 11 seed.

  • Avery Queen

I’m not really scared of any team in the Big 12 other than OU. I think it’s clear our biggest weakness is two physical big men. It seems we have gotten much better at handling full court pressure and if we are forced to play Grady that sounds just fine to me. Villanova also looks like a nice match up, Wake Forest does not.

If we do get the 10 seed it seems like we probably will play Memphis or OU if the committee is trying to avoid rematches (UCONN, MSU, Duke). Both those sound lousy as does any 1 seed besides maybe Louisville.

  • Ken in Las Vegas

Forget what I said about Texas. I didn’t realize they were projected to be an 8 or 9 seed. What do we think about a possible matchup with Xavier?

  • Acedeuce

latest bracketology has us as a 10 seed. Here’s my thinking though, we’ve played 3 of the 4 projected 2 seeds(MSU, Duke, UConn) so if they don’t want rematches, we would likely be posted up against Oklahoma if we are a 10 seed. Not sure how much of an advantage it is to get Oklahoma over any 1 seed… so at least with the 8/9 game we have an easier first round game right?

  • Other Matt

Being in the same pod with Villanova in Philly is the best possible scenario in my mind.

I was a huge KU fan before I went to Michigan and I still watch as many of their games as I can. Obviously we’d need to win that first game, but playing them in KC would be a bad situation.

  • Tom Too

Can you imagine what Blake Griffin would do to us? The police would have to tape off the court after the game…

  • Gavin Groninger

I can’t wait to ruin a bracket sheet by putting Michigan in the final four! We can’t lose!

  • AG2

If CBS Sports is coming to Crisler, then you’d think CBS already knows we’re in. After all today the committee is probably working on seeding rather than whose in or out.

  • Avery Queen

    this game is ABSURD!

  • Giddings

AG2, there have been several instances in the past where CBS is at a school for the Selection Show and that school does not get in… it’s pretty sad but believe me there’s at least one or two each year.

  • BL11

This is why the SEC isn’t getting any bubble love…their conference is really bad in general and has no top level teams. I can see why “athletes” want to play at Tenn but they realistically have a bad shot at ever amounting to a championship contender.

  • blueinflorida

I would love a first round matchup with BYU or Utah but BYU might be seeded higher than a 7. I really don’t want any part of Marquette, but I guess there are worse matchups out there. It’s fun just to have this conversation.

  • AG2

I’d love to get one of those overseeded mid majors in the first round.

An 11 seed means a first round game vs. a 6 and avoiding the 1s and 2s before the sweet sixteen.

  • gobluehtown

@blueinFLA, Marquette is 0-4 in there past four games and they lost Dominic James, they are a shell of there former selves plus they no longer have a great coach. I would takr Marquette over some of these hotter teams, i.e. Utah and Arizona St.

  • Avery Queen

So in literally 5 seconds there was a travel called foul, a rebound recovered by free throw shooting team (Tenn.), a 5 second call on the in-bounds pass, and then back to back in-bounds pass turnovers.

  • ZRL

If we can win in the 1st round, we’ll be a preseason top 25 team next year assuming everyone stays. I really believe we’ll win in the first round no matter who we play. We play great after long rest and in big games. Even with we do lay an egg, I’ll be smiling the whole 2 hours.

  • Avery Queen

I second any mid-major. Butler’s best and only impressive win of the year was Xavier… Nice and small too. Possible 7 seed.

  • Ken in Las Vegas

Well, Bracketology on ESPN just had a little Big Ten debate, and Michigan wasn’t mentioned once. They argued the merits of Penn State and Wisconsin instead. After looking at the resumes more closely, I actually believe that Penn State is more deserved than Wisconsin. They are only 4-10 against the top 50, while Penn State is 6-9. We talk about how Penn State beat nobody out of conference, but Wisconsin only beat Va Tech, and they’re an NIT team.

  • Regardless of who we end up with in the draw, one thing is clear: I’m going to be rooting my ass off for the Big Ten throughout. The media take down has been intense thus far.

  • blueinflorida

Yeah I understand Marquette is in a slump and lost a good player but I’ve seen them play alot this year and they are very athletic. THat McNeal kid is a stud and I just think they would give us alot of trouble. I echo the Cal matchup tho—wouldn’t mind playing them. Most every bracket I’ve looked at has us at a 10 and getting Oklahoma in a possible second round game. I actually hope we get bumped to an 11.
