Michigan went blow for blow with Purdue in the first half and had a one point first half lead. Michigan certainly didn’t play perfect but they made enough plays even without Zack Novak. I questioned the ability of the role players to make plays on the road but for the first 20 minutes they came through. Jim Burr managed to single handily flip the script early in the second half.
Jim Burr ejected Manny Harris at the 18:28 mark after a pretty routine play left Chris Kramer sprawled on the court. Manny was attempting to create some space by swinging the ball across his body and he let his elbow get a little high. A foul was a reasonable call, the flagrant foul ejection was absurd. There was no malicious intent and the mere fact that Chris Kramer started bleeding does not warrant an ejection. The ejection call was not made until Kramer lifted his head off the ground and the officials saw the blood. Kramer waved his arms around as he left the floor to get the crowd into the game and returned shortly.
For reference:
Art. 7. When during the course of play, an individual strikes an opponent with the hand, elbow, arm, foot, knee or leg in a non-confrontational manner but the act is excessive or severe, it shall be ruled as a flagrant foul and not a fighting action. When a defined body part is used to strike an opponent but the contact is not severe or excessive, a judgment shall be made by the official as to whether the contact is intentional.
There was clearly no intentional contact or fighting action. The rule asks whether the act was “excessive or severe” and says nothing about the result. 9 times out 10 on a play like that Kramer doesn’t start gushing blood. It was a routine basketball motion and Manny’s elbow happened to catch him. The fact that the flagrant wasn’t called until the officials saw Kramer’s face makes it all the more egregious.
If you were wondering, Jim Burr also was an official for the Michigan/Illinois game that left Zack Novak’s face looking like this. No foul was called on the play.
The score was 29-27 Michigan when Harris was forced off the floor at the 18:28 mark and Purdue finished the game on a 39-21 run. Beilein’s wrath apparently uspet the officials as well, Purdue found themselves in the bonus about 5 minutes into the half. It is hard to fault Michigan for coming unglued when they were already playing a man down before having their best player kicked off the floor on the road. The momentum shifted, the crowd got involved, and like any good team should the Boilermakers put away the shorthanded Michigan team.
Bob Knight hit the nail on the head this morning when he said that today’s game changing performance would come from the officials. This one stings because Michigan was scrapping and playing hard, they were actually winning on the road against one of the top teams in the conference. The bottom line is that Michigan has to rebound. They have every reason to be hungry from here on out and they need to figure out a way to turn that hunger into some positive energy.
Michigan has a huge game against Penn State this Thursday. Michigan needs to win it because they have two games against top 10 teams on deck. A loss to Penn State would probably be a dagger in Michigan’s tournament hopes barring a run in the Big Ten tournament.
Player Bullets:
- Manny Harris: Manny was really struggling in the first half and didn’t get much going. The turnovers are turning into a consistent problem and Purdue really took him out of his game with the pressure defense.
- DeShawn Sims: Peedi had Michigan’s six first points and finally got them going but he was contained by JaJuan Johnson and couldn’t get much going, especially after the Harris ejection.
- Jevohn Shepherd: Shep did a good job in Zack Novak’s place: 4-7 shooting (1-2 3pt) for 10 points with 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 turnover and a steal. Shep still has a couple plays that leave you slapping your head but I think he will see some minutes going forward.
- Zack Gibson: I thought Zack played with great hustle today. He had a tip slam and a follow at the buzzer of the first half. For the game he scored 6 points on 3 of 4 shooting with 3 boards and a steal in 10 minutes.
- Eric Puls: E-Pulla was tied for the fourth leading scorer in this one. That tells you enough about how this game deteriorated. Eric can shoot the ball but he just isn’t strong enough to bang with anyone on defense.
- Laval Lucas-Perry: Still searching. Laval is really struggling right now and I don’t know what it is going to take to get him out of his funk.
- CJ Lee: CJ played 29 minutes and contributed 2 points, 3 boards, and 2 steals. CJ got the start and helped hold Purdue’s offense down in the first half. I think CJ does a very good job of helping to deny the post when he is an on the ball defender.
- Stu Douglass: His little streak seems to be a thing of the past, another 0-fer for Stu but he did have 4 assists and no turnovers.
- David Merritt: 1 assist and 3 turnovers is not ideal. Merritt had some good hustle plays but just doesn’t give Michigan enough on offense.
- Kelvin Grady: Kelvin only played 17 minutes and had 2 points, 4 assists, 3 turnovers, and two boards. Kelvin tried to force things a bit by penetrating after Manny was booted and that resulted in a few turnovers.
- Anthony Wright: Nice to see Ant hit a three pointer in the first half but he still doesn’t provide much else besides the occasional make.
- Announcing: Awful. The fact that there was an “incomplete” call rather than a missed shot probably says enough but I was not impressed by Clark and Verne.
I think that game was outrageous. The refereeing was piss poor, and the fact that Manny Harris was ejected was appalling and speaks to the referees abilities to make the appropriate calls.
I do have one question though, in the last two games we have seen the referees go to the monitor to review a foul/non-foul call? What is it with this newfound propensity to go to the monitor to review these fouls? Is it even allowed? If it is, it shouldn’t be. Just like football, fouls and penalties are game speed judgment calls and should not be subject to review.
All in all, a lost opportunity for Blue, that was mostly caused by poor officiating, not game play.
So I missed the second half so I can’t really comment on the Harris ejection but the general consensus seems to be that it was a ridiculous call. All I can say is: If the ref makes call A, then lets the result of the play change his call, then he should probably not ref another game. That’s just absurd, as some have already said.
The call is that much more frustrating when we consider the fact that we were playing well in a tough environment.
I don’t think the Harris ejection lost us the game, but I will say it made it next to impossible for us to win the game. Still, I saw some things I really liked, things I haven’t seen since the beginning of the year.
I’ve been a big advocate of Jevohn Shephard on here for awhile, and after today’s performance I’m still firm in his corner. Sure he made a couple boneheaded plays but what else can you expect from a guy whos sat on the bench for basically a month. 10 points and a couple rebounds, plus his length in the 1-3-1 led to a couple turnovers and altered shots. I really don’t see the difference between JS and Zack Novak right now, other than Zack will be around another 4 years.
I really liked CJ Lee starting. I like his intensity on defense and his motion on offense.
Bottom line—-the Harris ejection killed us today, but we probably weren’t going to win the game anyway. Its not like Harris was having a great day. We’re a better team when we got 10 deep and I sincerely hope JB continues to play guys like SHephard and Wright just to keep the key guys fresh.
Shep should be starting at the four and splitting minutes with Novak there, maybe about 23/17 or so, with Zack getting 8-10 more at the three. Ideally.
And i wouldn’t have a problem with seeing Puls getting maybe 5-8 minutes a game. He’s got a nice shot, and i really don’t think it could hurt to throw him at the four as well.
Verne was just brutal, but he’s been like that for years (I distinctly recall our game at UCLA two years ago in which he kept talking about someone called Lester Abraham). Time for him to be put into some sort of Retired Broadcasters Home with Messers Packer and Jackson.
The offense looks dreadful right now, just a bunch of passing around the perimeter with certain guys not even looking to shoot. Offense seems to get further and further away from the basket as the game goes on. Beilein can NOT put Lee and Merritt out there at the same time, that’s just foolish.
Gibson should be getting more PT, that’s the only way he’s going to improve and gain confidence.
oh, the pain, the pain…
I agree with you all. Fouls and ejections shouldn’t be based on the perceived severity of an injury. How the hell does a player get thrown out of a game for an unintentional foul!??!!? There is no way someone should be tossed from a game for a foul, unless it was clear that the guy was intentionally trying to hit someone! The key here is intention!!! Damn this is ridiculous!! If a guy lands on your foot and rolls his ankle, do you get tossed? What if you foul him while he is driving to the basket and he falls awkwardly and breaks his leg, do you get suspended for the year?
Their guy has a bloody nose, so it seems bad and they throw out Manny. The guy comes back quickly with a stupid mask and seems fine indicating that the blow wasn’t as bad as it first seemed. But we don’t get Manny back! If ejections are based on the degree of injury, then we should be able to get Manny back when after just a few damn minutes the guy who was supposedly so damaged that we had to toss our player comes back to play, no worse for ware.
It turned what would have been a close game into a blowout.
I’m not even sure Manny hit him at all. If you watch the replay, it looks like his elbow either missed him entirely or just barely clipped him, and that Kramer took an awkward dive (in which he hit the floor with the side of his face) – which is probably what actually caused his bloody nose.
At any rate, there’s absolutely no way that was intentional, so how can it be grounds for ejection?
Agreed on on the offense looking bad, it has for a while now. In this particular game, however, that was significantly caused by Purdue’s “pressure” defense. And by pressure, I mean mugging the ball-handlers every time down the court.
Setting aside Manny’s ejection, as we unanimously agree it was total BS, the refs just blow. I mean we picked up some crap calls as well, c’mon. Someone on an MgoBoard thread compared Purdue’s defense to that of the mid-90s Knicks, and I think the analogy is apt. They really do push, body, hack the offensive players constantly. The referees cannot simply allow that to happen. Some might argue, that the refs can’t call something on every possession, but they must set a tone that disallows that sort of defensive strategy; eventually, Purdue would have to adjust to avoid fouling out, getting in the bonus, etc.
Finally, I know that it’s usually lame to complain about officiating in the wake of a loss, but there is a limit. This game was abominably called. It was beyond the pale.
NIT……
I watched a Purdue game not long ago (can’t remember who it was against) but Kramer had a bloody nose in that game too. I think it’s been hit enough that it doesn’t take much to bleed. In your face players are likely to get banged more and bleed more.
I really thought this was a game we would take (before it started and actually up to halftime). Who knew that everything would fall apart the way it did.
And another vote that the ejection was pure bs.
I agree that the call was total BS, but now for a little analysis of how the rest of the season may play out…
I said after the home loss to Ohio State that we are going to begin our tailspin into the NIT, and I think that’s still the case, but I think Jim Burr just secured our invite. This team doesn’t seem to respond well to adversity (say what you will about those two 20-point comebacks, but they were against two of the worst teams the NCAA has ever seen), and I honestly think we may have lost all momentum that we had at any point during this season. Throughout the entire first half, I thought we had that swagger back, but in one swift moment Burr took it all away.
From here on out, I think we will have big problems beating everybody. There is no confidence, we are in a HUGE shooting slump, and Jim Burr is still officiating Big Ten games. Those three together equal certain doom for us.
Two more victories this season. I still think we will take out MSU, and we could squeak out one other W, but the journey to the NIT is a slippery slope.
“We don’t retaliate, we just get ‘Ws’,” Kramer said.
What a tool. I’m already fired up for February 26th.
My sense is that Mr. Burr acted on a false availability heuristic when making his decision. By having the Novak ejection fresh in mind he went with the conclusion to eject on instinct. Although the two incidents should have nothing to do with each other, it’s ultimately impossible to take out the impact of the first foul on such a subjective call as the one the referee made. He thought “what happens with an elbow to the face”, first thing that popped into his mind was Novak’s foul (due to its recent occurrence). Bang, decision made, and once it’s made it’s over.
That said, to me that Michigan has more positives than negatives to take from this game. The turnovers were a bit concerning but I think that holding onto the ball is something you can fix in practice and I’m sure Coach B will address it. I was happy to see some success in the man to man defense against a team that was not able to completely dominate the paint, at least at the beginning. I think that the 1-3-1 was something Purdue excelled against with good ball movement. Besides the first half defense I think it was nice to see us in the lead when Manny was contained. That shows that role players are beginning to make strides towards making significant contributions in road games. But the ejections shows how much of their success depends on the presence of Manny on the floor.
I think going forward we prove to be a team that can matchup well against some teams and seem to be lacking in critical components (post presence) against others. Today M showed me they can play with Purdue, even while playing with mediocrity (11 first half turnovers?). Assuming Hummel is healthy next time we play them, I think home court would counter that about equally. That game should be close. I also think that we matchup better against the boilermakers, Minnesota and MSU (assuming Lucas doesn’t penetrate into the lane at will) than previous teams. Our success really depends on whether these guys can get their confidence going, begin to limit their mistakes and really learn how to grind it out on defense. Some lineup shakeups should also be in turn, I’m confused why Merrit even plays sometimes. Whatever the outcome this season, our young team should be a top 5 big ten team next year and into the years thereafter. And who knows what could happen this season if we find the groove and started to play good basketball.
After making his judgment, Burr used a the blood to explain to himself that his judgment was correct. Think about if you ever make an unsure decision and how you search for something to reinforce the judgment, whether or not it has any correlation with the correct judgment.
That wasn’t even close to being intentional! Not even CLOSE! Now, what Gerald Henderson did to Hansborough was intentional, Manny just moved his arms and Kramer was guarding him too agressively. From what I remember, Kramer’s always been kindof a punk, too.
This was probably the kindest recap you could possibly have made considering the circumstances.
The flagrant foul on Manny…nothing short of ridiculous. Jim Burr has called a bunch of our games, and it seems like he’s got a personal problem with Beilein (That’s 2 games in a row where Beilein pissed off the wrong ref).
Although Kramer is a bit of a punk, I wish we had a couple of guys like him on our team. His nose was in the wrong place at the wrong time. It was just a flesh wound!
Taking a step back, not much has changed since the beginning of the week. We were expected to lose both of these games and we did.
The fact is, going 9-9 in the Big Ten will almost certainly get us in, barring a loss in the BTT to Indiana. It’s looking like our SOS at the end of the season will be in the Top 10, if not Top 5. Where do the remaining five wins come from?
PSU – has to be a W, I’ll say 75-25 chance
MSU – can’t underestimate emotion here… I think it’s a 50-50 shot
@ NW – we match up well and won’t take them lightly, 65-35 shot
Minny – still not convinced they are top-tier, at home I say 60-40
@ Iowa – if Tate is back we could struggle but they’ve been bad, 55-45
Purdue – emotion will run high, we saw today that we match up well, I say 55-45
@ Wisc – this will be must-win for UW, never know though, 30-70
@ Minny – Barn is tough place to play, we’ll say 30-70 here also
So what I’m thinking is PSU, @ NW, Minny, @ Iowa, then either PU or MSU at home. All those people saying “kiss the NCAA hopes goodbye” need to realize that it is still very, very possible, we are right on the edge.
AG2 – An intentional foul is the not the same as a flagrant. A foul does not have to be deemed intentional to be called a flagrant, either.
And what did Kramer do to be called a ‘punk’ by everyone here? He was defending Manny legally and took an elbow to his face. I guess it is a pretty punk move to start bleeding from the nose after it has been broken. Trying to rile up the home fans after being injured is pretty punkish, too.
Change those PSU odds to 65-35, I just had visions of Cornley getting an offensive rebound and and-one over Novak.
Its not fair for Manny to have received “Novak” treatment, when it was simply an offensive foul and nothing more
Giddings you are so optimistic. I can only wish I was that positive.
Ha it might look that way, but think about it – I probably have given @ Illinois a 35-65 shot, home against OSU a 60-40 shot, @ PSU a 45-55 shot, @ OSU a 35-65 shot, and @ Purdue a 30-70 shot.
I guess the key is that it’s not unthinkable to still go 9-9.
You cant throw an elbow that high, connection or not. I got ejected because I simply threw an elbow that height, i didnt even land it. We all need to stop sipping the homer-ade and look at the facts… Harris nearly took his head off.
I said Kramer is a punk based on the previous season or two of watching him, not just this one game. Besides, that post-game comment was almost a confirmation of it.
If Manny is out for the next game, Penn State is going to mop the floor with us, even at home. My only hope is that Beilein refuses to suspend him if the Big Ten doesn’t force his hand. I am going to make it a mission to go to the game at home vs. Purdue now.
Jim Burr has officiated 5 out of 15 Purdue home games. The Big 10 can’t find any different referee to do the game. Last week he did a game at Madison, followed the next night at Philadelphia, followed the next night in Minneapolis. This old f_rt needs to work a minimum schedule in the B10, not what is going on now.
Watch the film again. Did the kid flop and then hit his nose on the ground, causing all the blood to flow? The kid gets “elbowed” then moves away from contact? Try this at home, lol, if you get hit with the lead elbow, you will fall in that direction, not away from it. I honestly think the kid got nicked by the elbow, decided to flop, then hit his nose on the ground, causing the “blackout.”
If this was not our best player, on a team already playing without a starter, on the road, in the Big Ten, I wouldn’t make such a big deal about this. But, this is a garbage call. Momentum was killed, no matter how badly Harris was playing, when this call was made.
Just hard to watch this team of young, scrappy players get funked over by the refs.
How is saying “We don’t retaliate, we just get Ws” ‘punk’? Frankly, it’s the right attitude, and he’s right. They do get Ws, and they didn’t retaliate. I don’t get it.
Kramer doesn’t look “knocked out” in this picture…
http://img91.imageshack.us/my......rkoex8.jpg
He looks like he is bracing himself for the landing while flailing his other arm.
Kramer and Painter were both quoted as saying that it was not intentional. But JB said that Burr explained to him that Manny threw his elbow into Kramer’s nose. BS
http://www.detnews.com/apps/pb.....10417/1004
hey rich, didn’t u no that manny’s been in the weight room about 30 minutes a week and can now bench 85lbs. with the power he generates if he had hit kramer full force it would have sent him to the third row and probably put his nose on his shoulder.lucky “we just get W’s” kramer.
Sheryl: So that article is saying that everyone besides Jim Burr knew the right call?
Im not throwing in the towel just yet, but Coach has to make some roster moves. I think us winning 4-5 isnt unlikely..just as bad as we are playing you would have to think the shots may start to fall one day. I would clear the bench, nobody in uniform deserves to not get a chance to be a spark plug for this team. I agree tho Merrit and Lee cannot be on the floor at the same time! Bring the youg fellas off the bench with Lee or Merrit who are leaders who arent gonna shoot, and since Stu believes he has the green light on anything within 30 feet. Start Lee or Grady, with Manny,Simms,Shep, and Novak or Gibson. Then u can come off the bench with alot more energy.
I think we should try to sign Robbie Hummel, make a block buster deal at the trade deadline.
Also RE: Jim Burr I think it is remarkable that he has officiated 6 Purdue games this year (ref profile: http://statsheet.com/mcb/refer...../schedule) That seems like a lot.
He also let the Krabbenhoft elbow on Lewis Jackson go… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bM816fpnPmw
As well as the Novak incident when he left the floor bleeding.
The Krabbenhoft incident was far worse. I can’t believe the B10 hasn’t suspended him for that.
Jay Bilas was just on ESPN saying that Michigan was out of control. 2 ejections in 2 games, while during his whol 4 year career no one on his team ever got ejected. He really came off like a jackass. To encourage JB to discipline Novak for his cheap shot is fine. To say the program is out of control because Harris unintentionally elbowed a girl is ridiculous.
Sorry for the “whol” typo. And I swear to God, I didn’t intentionally write “girl” there. I just noticed it and am actually LOLing on that one. Subconscious and all that.
jevohn should have been starting since the duke game doesnt matter if he does anything when hes out there or not……he may be the most athletic person on the team and can do things that practically every other person cannot…..his shooting may be suspect, but at least he can create opportunities and drive and is a beast on the glass at times…….this kid is probably really pissed he came to michigan…..he could have became a fantastic player somewhere else…….you could have seen these days coming when we were not blowing the cupcake teams away like we shoudl have been……..their struggles right now are disturbing though because they should be getting better and manny being ejected probably screwed them up a bit, but its unfortunate to say the least how things are shaping up……and this team is way off the bubble at this point they are no where near capable of being in the tourney…..people should stop talking about that asap
Anyone that thinks that was a flop is kidding themselves. It was a stupid and dangerous foul although I agree not intentional, so I’m not sure where that falls in the rule book.
And btw if anyone was just watching College Gameday, Bilas and Digger absolutely just tore us apart and said Beilein had to get things under control in order to protect our integrity. Digger even suggested that Manny’s was on the same level as Novak’s and another incident be a season suspension. Knight remained somewhat neutral although said the refs handled it well.
Let’s watch the f-bombs. I didn’t see what Digger and Bilas were saying but it sounds absurd.
If anyone knows any other flagrant fouls that have been called this year let me know in here on on e-mail. Big Ten teams or not..
Sounds like it to me Dylan. Shoot, even some of the Purdue fans admit it.
I wonder if we paid the price for Burr missing the Krub whatever call and he was making it right with Purdue at our expense?
And do you really think that JB and Manny think the Novak thing had nothing to with the call or are they just saying what they feel they have to?
Does this automatically get reviewed by the B10? I don’t see any way they could make Manny pay beyond what he already did. It was already too much.
Full of questions, ain’t I?
I think the IL Novak stitches thing was handled right. He’s an agressive player and that’s part of having such a hustle style. Seemed that Novak ran into him just as much as Legion did him–and I think it was a head bump. But this is exactly why Manny shouldn’t have been ejected–because Kramer plays in a similar way. In that link to the picture you had above, seemed like half of his body was behind Manny cuz he was so close in the first place. And Manny was turning from catching the ball–not looking at Kramer’s exact position.
But I honestly don’t know the rules on the foul stuff, so just saying how it seems to me.
Dylan ,I don’t know if it was called flagrant, but the Houston- Arizona game where a player got his face stepped on and in Purdue- Northwestern game they had an intentional foul called.
And while I’m on a roll with the ?’s, I can’t for the life of me understand how pretty much the whole group of shooters lose their ability to make a basket.
I never in my life thought I’d see Novak lose his shot like this (not picking on him alone but he’s the one I saw on fire game after game after…. in high school). He would have an occaisional night in hs where he may not hit as many but nothing like this.
So my question is how can not only he but so many others be hitting so bad for so long? Not just making a comment but really want to know what could be causing it.
Sorry I should have added that an incident occurred in the North Carolina- north Carolina State game today that got two players ejected for like 2 seconds cause it happened at the end of the game
Can’t have Merritt and Lee on the court at the same time. That’s crazy. Also, I don’t understand why Gibson isn’t getting more time. We just have to start shooting better to win some of these games.
If I read too much more on here, I’m gonna blow up. Seriously, I’m about to go on a rampage.
It boggles my mind how so much of the media jumps dumps on Michigan. Jay Bilas–obviously still pissed about the whoel Amaker thing.
Digger Phels a.k.a. Notre Dame homer.
Absolutely absurd. JB needs to get control of his team? Really? We’re up 1 point on the road in a game we’re not suppose to be in squarely on the bubble—yeah like Manny Harris tried to knock Kramer out. Do people not think before they speak.
I wish I was Eric Puls. I wish I was on the team. Because I would do everything in my power to fire everyone up. This is absolutely ridiculous—we are a bulleye and its BS. I would turn this into fire and desire in that locker room.
Sheryl’s article really bothers me too—obviously Manny is saying all the right things. No doubt Novak’s call influenced what happened today. “We had two things go against us.”—I mean, I guess Manny. But shouldn’t that piss him off? Shouldn’t that light a fire in him? Shouldn’t this fire up the team.
Let’s go boys! Enough of this shit. Boy I’m fired up tonight. I realize this post didn’t make alot of sense but I’m fired up now.
And another thing—-
I live in Cleveland so I can’t go to many of the games. Those of you that can go—make sure you do everything you can to help create a home court advantage. Like Giddings said—-the dance is still very do-able but we have to win at home. So jump around, scream, yell and get loud. This team deserves it and they need our help. Everyone should take it personal. Everyone should take what happened today personally. This is our team. Enough is enough.
Good to at least see both Painter and Kramer tell it like it is… I just hope that the Big Ten listens to the people directly involved with the situation rather than national media “pundits” like Bilas, Phelps, and Kellogg who love to blow up stories like this.
I think it’s pretty safe to say that Beilein won’t suspend Manny on his own, which leaves it up to the Big Ten. And if they were to issue a suspension – after COMPLETELY IGNORING the Krabbenhoft clothesline on Tuesday – I would sincerely hope that Beilein formally protests or at least rats out this BS in the media for what it is. If he gets fined, I’ll gladly contribute a check to help pay.
Wisconsin loses at NW and Thabeet posts a triple double against Providence.
UConn will presumably be #1 when we play them, so much for hoping they are #4
. I really don’t know how we will deal with Thabeet, I wouldn’t be surprised if 70% of our shots were three pointers and the other thirty percent were all blocked.
Check the Tenn and Florida game tonight and you will see the same exact play happen where an elbow was thrown with the same intent as Manny’s and this one may have even been more blatant. Walter Hodge for UF received a Technical foul on the play. However, unlike the Manny play, Hodge was not ejected. There needs to be some consistancy from the referee’s across the nation if the same type of play is going to happen on the same day in College Basketball and a different call will be made because of it. The referee’s really blew any chance for theo Wolves to win that game by making that outrageous call. It was merely an offensive foul when it first happened then, once they saw him bleeding, they threw him out of the game for no reason. A player on offense has every right to clear his own space for himself. If Kramer wants to get in somebodies grill then your going to pay the price. Kudos to Johnny Belein for going at it with Burr after that horendous call. The referee’s shouldn’t decide the game and unfortunately by making that call and taking the best player from both sides out of the game, they did.
While watching this game, I was completely appalled by the call against Manny. It clearly appeared to be unintentional and Kramer clearly appeared to be flopping as well. As somebody else pointed out, he might have suffered the wound by hitting the floor. In any case, no way no how is this a flagrant foul and ejection. I was thinking Manny must have let an f bomb fly at the official or something. I’m still mystified by the call. It’s refreshing to see I’m not alone. It’s a shame since this idiotic call cost Michigan a decent chance at winning this game – they were outscored 30-8 in the few minutes after the call, turning at 2 point lead into a 20 point deficit!!
The Big Ten should review the call and issue an apology to Harris and Michigan. They should also suspend the officials for at least one game.
FWIW, I also saw the Novak incident which was clearly different. In that case, there was clearly enough to suggest an intentional elbow and warrant a flagrant foul. On the other hand, it may not have been intentional and a one game suspension seemed a bit extreme.
So you have one questionably intentional elbow and one completely accidental elbow. And the announcers are calling for Beilien to get things under control!? Give me a break.
Again, don’t mind being wrong. But can someone explain to me how a hit going in that direction (towards the left side of his body-from manny’s position) caused him to flop…oops…i mean fall to his left (from manny’s position)? Watch it frame by frame if you want, it seems like he barely touched the guy, if at all.
He should not have been kicked out. Heck, it was a good flop, call the foul or the tech if you want. But, this stupidity and over reaction has already costed us a game, no need to compound it by anything more. Behlein should review this and then blast Big Ten officiating.
correction, caused him to fall to his right (from manny’s position)
Doug Gottleib hits the nail on the head on ESPN “Midnight Madness”… Didn’t even know that it was a foul.
I was at this game and the Harris call was just ridiculous. I think we were up 4 when the play happened. THe fans next to me were going absolutely nuts. I tried to explain to them that Harris does that move every game. I can tell you right now, that the only reason harris was ejected was because of the crowd. the crowd had already gone nuts over the gibson tip at the buzzer and the refs didn’t want to here it again. As soon as the fans started cheering “throw him out” i had no doubt in my mind harris was getting ejected. The refereeing was so bad all game. Even the Purdue fans next to me were talking about how all the calls were going their way. The harris ejection though couldn’t have happened any worse either. We lose our best player and Purdue’s fan favorite, work-horse player is the one who gets hurt. I think we were up 4 when the play happened. I turned to my wife and said “i bet we lose by 15 now”, and low and behold we lost by 20. If harris is suspended it will be absolutely ridiculous. What a frustrating game!!!!
Yea if you get a chance to watch Midnight Madness, they broke down the rule and absolutely disagreed with the refs call. Said Manny was in the right to clear space
Kramer is one of those in-your-face defenders. I imagine he gets involved in contact on a regular basis.
Manny Harris never initiates contact.
The refs owe M one on that.
Some PU homer updated Chris Kramer’s Wikipedia page to say that Manny’s foul was intentional and that the Gameday crew agreed.
So looking at our chances. I really think they are still pretty good. If Wisco loses to Ill in their next game I think they are officially done. Penn State is not going to have a .500 record after their next stretch of 6 games (and if they do then they are way better than anyone thought and will be handing key losses to other teams). And lastly if we can beat NW again they won’t be an issue. So as long as we can still win at least 4 more games I think we get that 6th spot. Hopefully we still send six…
Anyone have a video of the Midnight Madness crew breaking down the play?
Should have been a foul, but not a flagrant. Turning with your elbows out while trying to protect the ball is pretty common. It’s only when you start swinging the arm away from the body (as Novak did) that you start getting into flagrant foul territory. (For that matter, Novak probably shouldn’t have been suspended – it was reckless but not malicious, so unless he’s shown a history of such acts an ejection is sufficient penalty.)
In the last two days I have seen 2 moves exactly like the one Manny made resulting in elbows to the nose/face. One was a no-call, one was a regular foul until it was determined that it was after the whistle, then it became a technical. Manny’s resulted in an flagrant/ejection… hmm
Now with Penn State hot off a win in East Lansing, they’re in line to steal the Big Ten’s 6/7th bid. Make no mistake, Wednesday is a must win. We can only hope that Manny doesn’t get a suspension.
I find it interesting that Purdue is so protective over Hummel. If he is injured, he should not be playing instead of acting like other teams should come in and tiptoe around him.
The thing about Penn State is that everyone was saying there were probably in before the win today… and even after the win at MSU, their RPI is in the high 60s or low 70s (depending on where you look). It’s very rare for a team with an RPI above 60 to get an at-large bid, so I think Penn State still has lots of work left to do. They also have a gauntlet of games coming up, although they passed their first test. They faced only 2 non-conference teams in the RPI Top 100, and lost to both of them. The win at Ga Tech was impressive at the time but Ga Tech has been a huge disappointment (besides the win over Wake).
I really think that the gap between us and PSU is razor thin right now, and with a win on Thursday we might be dead-even (considering our impressive non-conference).
michigan has no chance of makng the tourney………….they have looked so bad…..just as bad as last year…….they might be the worst team in the big ten…….how many games can you struggle with the same problems……doesnt matter if your on the road or not, they used to be fun to watch now its just getting silly
Dave: Projecting the Big Ten season Michigan has lost probably 2 games at the most that we would have expected them to win. With 8 conference games left I think Michigan can still make some progress. Thursday is looking like a huge game.
Agree with AG2, this PSU game (Thurs) is a must win. Probably the first true must win.

Kramer has a broken nose. What a faking punk! I hate those guys that play hard all the time. PUNK! I’ll bet he went to class today. PUNK!
I was surprised that Harris got the boot. I thought a foul for sure….maybe a T, but I guess the refs were told to watch for these situations after Novak and KrabbenHOFF.
Did Michigan have a chance to win the game…..sure. Once Harris crushed Kramer who is the heart and soul of the PURDUE team you knew they were gonna turn it up.
Most people aren’t saying Kramer is faking it. That is not the issue. The issue is the ejection.
Junior guard Chris Kramer has a deviated nasal septum and a severely depressed nasal bone fracture as a result of being struck by Michigan’s Manny Harris during Purdue’s victory on Saturday.
Dr. Peter J. Hillsamer, a Lafayette-based otolaryngologist, will repair the nasal bone fracture during surgery Wednesday. A second procedure to repair the septum likely will be performed after the season.
Kramer will wear a protective mask for the next three weeks but will continue to play.
Coach Matt Painter said Monday that point guard Lewis Jackson had not yet been cleared to play against Ohio State after suffering a concussion in the Jan. 27 victory at Wisconsin.
Purdue7: No one is trying to say Kramer’s nose doesn’t hurt. People are saying it shouldn’t be a flagrant because it was a basketball play. There was nothing out of the ordinary besides the injury, and the injury doesn’t justify a flagrant foul.
The play makes a lot more sense if Manny hit Kramer in the forehead. That would explain how Kramer falls to his left after being hit from the left side. I think Manny hit Kramer in the forehead knocked him backwards and Kramer breaks his nose on the floor from the fall. I think this probably what happened based on the video and pictures of the incident. Rich this is the explanation that I think you should consider.
He got hit on the bridge of the nose causing 2 fractures. I am not sure how the tip of the elbow hitting the near the tip of his nose is supposed to drive him back and to the left…..to quote JFK.
Have you not seen the replays? Do you think he wears the mask as part of the scam to get Manny thrown out? Do you think he is having surgery just to keep it going?
Did I say the mask was a part of a scam? Did I not say that he broke his nose? I just think that he breaks it when he hits the floor, which is entirely possible based on the replay. He falls to his left and fractured it when he hit the floor. Manny hitting him in the forehead makes much more sense if you look at the video. It would be very unlikely that he falls to his left after being hit from that direction.
So you are saying an elbow will cause a 200 pound person to go flying?
Isn’t it obvious that he saw it coming and tried in vane to get out of the way?
Why did he have a gash on the side of his nose just below his eye?
It would be physically impossible to gash the side of your nose on the floor as you claim.
Where is the cut on his forehead?
Ok, I agree. Your point is valid. I did not see that he had a gash under his eye. It would be possible to break your nose on the floor, but I agree that he didn’t gash his nose on the floor. Based on the cut Manny must have hit him with the elbow. You are right.
Glad to see Manny was not suspended further by the BIG TEN!
Look forward to the return to Ann Arbor for Kramer and the BOILERS!
It should be fun to see the fans get all over him!
