Laval Lucas-PerryLaval Lucas-Perry’s debut has finally arrived. Frankly, coming into this year I didn’t expect much from this team before December 20th and now I don’t know what to think. I figured that Michigan would struggle with teams like UCLA, Southern Illinois, Duke, and Maryland and be sitting a lot closer to 500 than 7-2. Now if they can pull off wins over Oakland, Florida Gulf Coast, and NC Central they are looking at a potential record of 10-2 headed into the conference season. Most impressive is the fact that they have achieved all this without the help of LLP.

Michigan will ease Laval into the rotation, I would expect around 20 minutes or so today. There is no need to force the issue when you have a team that’s playing good basketball. A bit of a checklist on what to watch for with Laval:

  • Where does he play on offense and defense? Is he playing the one or the two? Does he play at the top or bottom of the 1-3-1?
  • Does he look comfortable distributing it? How does he shoot the three?
  • What lineup combinations are out there? Does Beilein play Grady with LLP? LLP with Novak?

Oakland is a solid program in the state of Michigan who really put themselves on the map when Rawle Marshall (the fighter) led them to an NCAA berth in 2005. I would expect they will be near the top of the Summit conference again this year. It’s also important to look at their non-conference schedule and understand some of the reasoning behind it. Oakland plays a lot of games in short time periods to try and help prepare them for the Summit tournament because that’s the only way in for a team in their conference. This scheduling makes the Michigan game Oakland’s third in less than a week (Rochester on Sunday and Wisc-GB Thursday).

Oakland is still without Derick Nelson, the 6-5 wing averaged 17 ppg last year but is out with a broken foot. Their go to guys on offense are Erik Kangas and Jonathan Jones. Kangas is a 6-3 guard averaging 16.6 ppg who is the Grizzlies main deep threat with a career three point percentage just under 40 percent. Jonathan Jones is a point guard from Okemos who plays 38.4 mpg and averages 14.5 ppg along with 5.4 apg. Jones can change a game with his speed and seeing him and Grady go head to head should be fun.

As a team Oakland tends to play a little faster than Michigan, they average 69 possessions per game to Michigan’s 66. Michigan shoots the ball better with an eFG% of 53% compared to OU’s 50.4%. Oakland gets more offensive rebounds as they rebound 34.5% of their missed shots compared to Michigan’s 30.7. However Oakland turns the ball over 21.5% of their possessions compared to Michigan’s 18.2%.

Last year Michigan broke the century mark against Oakland but also gave up 87 points. Michigan fans should worry if Kangas gets hot and Michigan comes out flat. The Palace will probably be about a third full (TICKETS ARE STILL ON SALE) so energy might be a little down. Hopefully the addition of LLP to the lineup will have Michigan fired up and ready to go on Saturday and Michigan can get by with a solid win.

Let’s hear your thoughts and predictions in the comments.

  • Ken in Vegas

Well, this is the one amongst the cupcakes that I’ve been a little worried about for a few reasons:

    1. Neutral court. Low energy like Dylan mentioned.
    2. LLP infusion. Adjustment issues?
    3. Teams will get 3 pt shots against us. Kangas on fire?
    4. Oakland warmed up, while we havn’t played in a week.
    5. Michigan hype too good to be true? Where’s the mental lapse?

Number 1 doesn’t seem like it would really help or hurt us. LLP adjustment does seem legit, but it’s just as likely that he immediately makes us tougher to beat too. Number 3 is probably the most noteworthy, as really any team could beat us if they were on fire from downtown all game. (See first half of SSU) Number 4….well they could just as easily be more worn down, while we have fresh legs. And lastly, number 5 is just the lingering effects in my mind of the Amaker era. Beilein should keep mental lapses from happening. You’re going to have to bring your A+ game to beat us.

Prediction 81-68 Michigan. LLP scores only 7 while playing 17 minutes. Novak hits 2+ threes and Gibson has an uplifting game. Cronin starts at point guard and has 11 assists.

  • Mike

I’m going, is anyone else going to be there? Is there going to be a “Maize Rage” section? And should I bother going to the game right before it?

  • dabadeeblue

and if anyone know an online feed to the game, please share.. i’d appreciate it. bored to death here in sydney. thanks.

  • Justin C

Dylan – is Kangas confirmed for the game tomorrow? I thought he was doubtful.

  • Ken in Vegas

Something that’s obsessed me lately is the choice of uniform color. I love how we have a rotating white, blue, maize combo, but what is the deal with 90% of our games sporting the whites? That’s the least appealing to fans, recruits, players, and it’s also the least Michigan. Anyway, lets get some predictions on the color for the Oakland game. I’m going with Blue.

  • Ken in Vegas

There’s no way I would have FSN Detroit somewhere on Direct TV here in Las Vegas is there? I need to see this game!!

  • http://www.umhoops.com Dylan

@Ken: The game is going to be tape delayed on one of the FoxSports channels I believe…. The Atlantic one I think if you have the sports pack.

@Justin C: Kangas played 42 minutes in Oakland’s OT win over Wisc-GB last night so I think he’s a go.

  • Ryan

Ken – I’m pretty sure if you have the Sports Pack on DirecTV that FSN Detroit is part of that package and thus you should be able to see it live…at least that is what I’m banking on as a DirecTV customer out here in California. I’ll have to make sure when I get home tonight. I seem to recall being able to watch some of the Michigan hockey games on FSN Detroit with the Sports Pack when I lived in Florida last year.

  • Ken in Vegas

Crap, I don’t know if I’ve got the Sports Pack. I don’t remember asking for it or anything. I was too focused on making sure I could see the Lions go 0-16 with Sunday Ticket. What an awesome investment!! I get to see history!!

  • Drew

Yea, as mentioned above, Kangas played 42 minutes in an overtime win last night, so I have a hard time believing he has any sort of injury that will affect his status for tomorrow, especially considering he hit the game winning three.

I went to high school with this kid, and he is one the better shooters I’ve ever seen. He was 6-12 from range last night and had 27 points, and I think he’s finally starting to heat up this year. Oakland was his best option out of high school, and I think a lot of that is because his high school coach did not market him well at all. If he plays his usual game tomorrow, your going to wish he would have gotten some more looks from in state. He easily could contribute on this Michigan team, and would fit in really well with the system.

Hopefully he doesn’t see too many open looks tomorrow. As long as we get off to a good start we should be able to take care of Oakland, but it wont be as easy of a victory as most would expect.

  • http://www.umhoops.com Dylan

Another note on the game tomorrow guys. CMU plays before so I wouldn’t be surprised if Trey Zeigler was in attendance.

  • redwings8831

As for the jersey’s, I assume we will be in blue as we are the road team. We usually wear maize for the big games (Duke) and we have worn white for all the other games because we were at home. I don’t understand why we wore white at MSG vs UCLA and Duke as I thought those were big games.

  • Sheryl

It looks like the game will be online here…
    http://www.channelsurfing.net/
Scroll down a little more than half way down the page (games listed in order of the time they are on).

  • JimC

If you’re going and you don’t have tickets yet, check at a Flagstar bank branch first. They were giving out free passes for general seating last week.

    Michigan 85, OU 74

  • http://www.wolverineliberationarmy.blogspot.com Musket Rebellion

I think we end up winning by around 20, but the score won’t be indicative of the game, I think it’ll be hard fought but we wear them down in the last ten minutes. I’ll say 81 – 63.

  • UMDC

I agree with Musket Rebellion. A tough game where we are up 5-10 most of the time and then in the last 10 minutes or so we stretch it out to 15-20.

    91-75

  • Manny Fresh

I don’t think I ever have been or ever will be more excited for a Michigan vs. Oakland sporting event.

    Michigan wins 75-63

  • Mith

Yeah, me too. It’s amazing how a few big wins has got me pumped up just like the good old days! GO BLUE!

  • Ken in Las Vegas

Oh hells yeah, I called up Direct TV to see if I could somehow purchase FSN Detroit and they were like “You should have it. Here, how about now. Do you see it?” And there it was. And to know that my dumbass paid $100 for the MLB TV package last year to watch the Tigers. Doh.

  • bball

If you have Comcast in Chicago, it looks like it will be on channel 413 at 6pm (central), which is FCSA (Fox Atlantic like Dylan said). I think you have to have the sports package though to watch, which is like $7 a month or something and you can cancel whenever. It’s the package with the NFL network.

  • bball

oh – and Michigan wins by 10+ but may only stretch it out in the last 10 mins like people said above. Depends on if we are hitting our threes or not. If a couple guys get hot, we blow them out, but with the nba line on the court and tight nba rims…probably a pretty cold shooting night in store.
Anxious to see how good the man-to-man is with LLP and if we have worked on finishing the fast break. Hope Shep keeps up the good play and Stu and Gibson are due for a good game.

    Go Blue!

  • Avery Queen

    Ken in LV -

All of the big pro-sports games are blacked out on the DirecTV sportspack. You will still need to dole out the extra cash if you want to watch the Tigers, Wings, or Pistons…..

The good news, though – college sports are never blacked out.

  • Dylan

trey zeigler is in the house. Not many fans though.

  • Manny Fresh

Hey guys – the white line is for NBA threes.

  • UMDC

    Wow, this is very impressive!!

  • Dylan

Let the llp era begin. Two triples already.

  • GregGoBlue

    LLP ON FIRE!!

  • Forty

Why did we have this lucas-perry kid on the bench? He can play!

    (I kid, I kid)

  • Jimmy

Is anyone else getting irritated with “man-to-man coverage?” In basketball it’s usually called defense.

We look good though. I’m not too concerned with Oakland staying close because they are a solid team. I’m confident we hold on comfortably.

  • ryan

I was very nervous that either:
    1. LLP would be way over hyped
    or
2 that he would be very nervous and have an off game.
But he looks great 4-5 from three already!

  • Dylan

Frustrating end to the half there. Michigan only up 8 at the half.

  • Drew

I’m disappointed to see that Kangas is not hitting, but good start for U of M. It’s nice to see an offense that has multiple 3 point weapons for a change. LLP is the missing piece to the puzzle. I truly believe we can contend in the Big Ten this year.

Seeing the offense in sync without Manny scoring is everything we can ask for. He is clearly ok with being the reason every one is open, and having little trouble distributing the basketball.

  • Sid

Yes, but crap call on Manny out of bounds. He was clearly nudged/shoved out.

Obviously, a great shooting half and impressive performances from LLP and Grady. Slight concern about our bigs – getting outmuscled/hustled down low and not providing any offense once Oakland extended their D to take away the 3.

  • Forty

Yeah that was definitely a force out. I’ll take the 8 point lead though.

  • Dylan

Ou cuts it to 6. 8:27 to go.

  • Forty

    Go blue! Back to 10.

  • Kevin in GR

Where’s Anthony Wright today? Injury or benched?

  • Dylan

Ant is dressed on the bench…

  • GBMDC02

The good news about this game, and this team in general, is that when things aren’t going their way, they don’t panic..they keep fighting. They could have EASILY panicked when OU dropped it to 4, but not with this team. That’s all coaching.

  • UMDC

Real nice win. LLP looks like the real deal :)

Thanks, Sheryl, for pointing out that live feed. It worked great for me here in DC.

  • Forty

I thought manny had a really impressive game. Shot didn’t fall, but he kept creating the entire game. What a playmaker.

  • Forty

Yawn, msu _finally_ beats a top 5 team.

  • dabadeeblue

..yeah the feed was flawless, all the way to sydney.

great win for michigan and i like how LLP is inserting himself into the team by not over pushing it. it’s going to be a heck of a year for michigan basketball. go blue!

  • Dylan

Stuck in traffic at the palace. Manny had 13 dimes and 0 to. As a team we only had 5 again.

  • Jimmy

Not on the topic of our game specifically, but is it too early to say that the Big Ten is UP this year??

Minnesota (10-0) upsets #9 Louisville today
    #17 Ohio State (8-0)
#13 Purdue (9-2) handles Davidson easily.
#19 Michigan State (8-2) upsets #5 Texas todat
I don’t think I need to talk about Michigan (8-2) here.
Illinois (9-1). Penn State (9-2), Wisconsin (8-2), and even Northwestern (7-1) are playing well.

All said, the league looks very strong this year but I think it’ll shake out something like this:
    1. Michigan State
    2. Purdue
3-6 Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ohio State
    7. Illinois
    8. Penn State
    9. Northwestern
    10. Iowa
    11. Indiana

Top SIX teams get in this year. 3-6 will be a battle, but Lighty’s injury hurts OSU. Go Blue.

  • Bluebufoon

Zach Gibson had a big game as a complimentary player. I believe his numbers were 6 pts 4 rebounds and three assists and three blocks. I know I’ve been tough on Gibson but he’s been productive the last couple of games.

Question becomes what does Anthony Wright decided to do now and in the future ? Obviously he didn’t play today with LLP in the line-up and next year its only going to get worse with Darius Morris and Matt Vogrich coming on board– does Wright stick it out on the bench or does he transfer to a smaller school to get some playing time ?

  • UMDC

Jimmy, I agree, the Big Ten looks to be really strong this year. The TV talking heads had no clue once again preseason. I’d say the Big Ten is the second toughest conference top to bottom, after the Big East.

Bluebufoon, good question regarding Wright. It’s amazing how far he has fallen, from starting to no PT at all. I think one thing is clear, he will not be back next year.

  • ohmigods

    BRING ON THE BIG TEN

    i can’t wait

  • Steele

The Big Ten definitely looks good. I’m sitting here watching Syracuse/Memphis and Dick Vitale just admitted that most analysts (himself included) had no idea pre-seasons just how strong the Big Ten would be this season. He ran through a list of impressive B10 teams and basically listed the whole conference. Awesome…

  • jmblue

UMDC – Wright’s a redshirt sophomore, so I imagine he’ll still be around next year.

  • Ken in Las Vegas

We’re talking about him transferring. He could be a freshman, junior, whatever. The point is that he probably won’t see meaningful minutes ever again, as we continue to get deeper. He will either have to fade into Michigan obscurity or transfer. He seems like the type that values his minutes, especially after starting the season as a starter. I don’t want to see him go, but it would open up another valuable scholarship.

As for the game, how awesome was it to see Stu and LLP go off in those spurts. We are becoming quite the talented team from behind the arc. There isn’t really one player that gets minutes who I’m not confident in hitting an open three. How about Merritt. That boy is always good for a couple. I bet is percentage is one of the highest on the team.

  • jmblue

Would a guy who has already redshirted really want to lose another year with a transfer? I don’t know. I agree that he probably won’t see much playing time from here on out, though.
