The strength of the 1-3-1 in my opinion is that it takes opposing offenses out of their element. They have to deal with something they don't see all the time and makes them at least work a lot harder to score. When it really starts working well and the traps lead to more turnovers then it is really effective. You are right though, it certainly isn't the ONLY factor in improvement. I think last year the 1-3-1 really hurt us because we couldn't run it well, basically didn't run it anymore half way through the Big Ten. But it looks much improved this year.
